    What's truly amazing is that in its history there has never been a structural failure of a DC-3. That plane was built like a tank.

      Bruh they apparently drove a steamroller over the wing of one of the prototypes, and the wing according to legend didn't even CRACK.

    That's saying something when an aircraft like the DC-3 is being revitalized for service more than 90 years after its introduction. A real testament to aircraft quality.

      @ True that. Think the best they can do is resurrect a type, but never the original.

      If cars required expensive certification and a ton of paperwork to build and cost $100,000 brand new... you’d see lots more old cars around.
      The biggest myth in the world is that depreciation is based on reliability or how well built a thing is. It’s based on how easy it is to get something new, which directly affects how many used units are on the market, which affects the price.
      This is why Dodge... which anyone can buy and are often leases and fleet vehicles.. have abysmal depreciation... while Subaru which doesn’t have any leasing options and has more expensive financing hold their value.

      Really it’s testament to the cost of creating a new aircraft and getting it type certified. Cheaper and easier to get mods to an existing aircraft approved.

    • @andrewalexander9492

      @@ronaldharris6569 Well, no, not really. the DC-3 is competitive in it's own niche, but once you get outside that very narrow niche, it's not terribly competitive. Just for example, it you were looking for a small regional airliner, there are quite a few airplanes whcih would be faster more comfortable and more economical than a DC-3, even a turbo conversion

    • @andrewalexander9492
      @andrewalexander9492 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@johnatkinson6759 Acquisition cost is a relatively minor consideration. Far more relevant is passenger seat mile cost and the BT-67 would have pretty high psm costs. Trust me, a regional airline with high utilization will pay significantly higher initial acquisition costs for something with lower operating costs. Thats ( one of the reasons) why you don’t see BT67s in scheduled airline service, and won’t. To claim, as he did that “It’s competitive with any similar sized modern aircraft “ is quite frankly, absurd.

    • @NigelHeads

    The only replacement for a DC3, is another DC3

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The Beech 1900, the Dash 8, and the 737 have all done a great job replacing it. There’s very few things a DC-3 can do that those three aircraft can’t. Skis, very rough gravel strips, and short strips... that’s about it.

      Can you see a 707 packing 4 turboprops?

    • @Bartonovich52
      @Bartonovich52 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Christopher Andersich
      None will reach 70 years old because their airframes are limited by pressurization cycles.
      However, the 737 will easily reach a total life span of 70 years because of its now 50+ year production run and the fact that airframes last 20 years on average.
      The 1900 is no longer in production, but the King Air has been in continuous production for over 55 years now so will also easily exceed 70 years.
      However, the Twin Otter airframes will reach 70 years old easily.
      Also... how much of this DC-3 is 70 years old? Not much. It’s a data plate rebuild.... because in our convoluted world of aviation you can replace every part but the data plate and it’s technically still just a repair. ;)

    • @ChicagoGringo
      @ChicagoGringo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @davem5333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      True, it is sad to lose the sound of a radial piston engine.
      But that's what it takes in this day and age to keep them flying. Engine parts are getting more expensive, mechanics who know how to keep them running are dieing off, the leaded gas to run them is getting scarce and expensive. And the insurance industry feels the turbine is a safer risk.

      Dave M 100LL is everywhere. Radials in these are being dumped because they aren’t as reliable or efficient as a turbine. And most of these aircraft are being used for commercial purposes. Zero reason to maintain a radial when a turbine does the job without blinking.

    • @hawkdsl
      @hawkdsl 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@davem5333 There are several companies that supply new parts for radials, and they have plenty of fuzzy faced young people to work on them. The radial is not dead on any level. PZL corp in Poland still makes the Curtis Wright 1820 (as the M-24) to this day... they even sell a AVGas version. Private Aircraft and collectors still keep the radials in the air, not to mention the giant fleet of Beavers in the northwest, Alaska, and just about anywhere in Canada.

      A Connie is a much more complex aircraft, with pressurized cabin. Doable, but at a much higher cost. The DC-3 has a practical use as a working aircraft, a restored Connie is pretty much a museum piece. Interesting article on Wikipedia. 5000 built in the USSR, hell. First turboprop conversions done in the 1950's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-3

    The DC-3/ C47 is the aircraft for the ages. I was wondering when someone was going to make a serious effort to reconfigure this aircraft. If there are any Curtiss C-46 aircraft around this would also be a good candidate.

    Just goes to show... The DC-3 might be an old warbird - but them bones are still ripe for the flyin' if ya just sling on some turboprops!!

      MR A EXACTLY! I wonder why this conversion hasn’t been done! It’s been done to the Grumman “Goose”, also a WWII aircraft and someone did a very Beautiful three-turbine conversion to a WWII German seaplane, I forget the name, but it travels all over Europe!

    • @marcliebhold9625
      @marcliebhold9625 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I forgot to add that a Lockheed Super Constellation could really use a turbine conversion, especially the way that bird eats engines!

      @@marcliebhold9625 I know what you mean, but there are only a few Constellations flying, and they are historic pieces, meaning the people that have them want o keep them historically correct.

      That might have made some sense circa 1965 when it would have been a rebuild of somewhat common 20 year old aircraft. Now that would be a refit for a handful of operating aircraft, or an extensive rebuild and repair to historic relics in the boneyard, with little more than the original serial number getting into the air again. Even much newer aircraft of demonstrated utility have trouble- a high hours C-130 with need of a wing box replacement will never fly again because just that work is a $7 million repair.

    Nice with a turbo prop conversion, but it would be so much better looking with the original round cowlings. The engines are such a vital part of the DC3 design. Nevertheless, these new engines will keep the planes flying for many more years to come which is awesome. Great work!
