The 18" bar actually works well on that CF-310! Not sure I'd personally put one on an out of the box CS-310 unless it was all I had😁 perfect learner saw size as you said👍🏻
Chainsaw Charlie at it again bahahaha. J/K Joe that was a great comparison and explanations. That ported saw rips. Great Gift for the channel. Id be curious how that stock 310 would compare to my stock ms 170 with both being 30cc saw's. I'm sure there both very comparable. Like you said basically every saw has a purpose and use what you have. The Ms 170 is what i taught my 12 year old how to use a chainsaw and i feel saw's that size are great for someone who has never ran a saw before. The slower speed helps beginners and keeps them from getting into trouble so fast. Thank you sir i appreciate everything your doing. You do an amazing job at explaining things.
Chainsaw Charlie is here to report! hahaha. I have run the 310 and an ms 180 at the same time. I have no video. If I remember correctly I feel as if the Stihl seemed to be faster because of the way it sounded and may have been a tad faster. I remember thinking it used a ton of fuel in comparison. It sure did breath a bit better, that is for sure! My dads saw runs pretty good but it has been some time since I have run it too. It is a 170. Thanks again sir!
Don't worry about trolls man. You're gonna get them. Just keep doing what you're doing. Keep it straight. Keep it honest and you'll be good. Bless you guys down there.
Any saw can run a long bar cutting 10 or 12 inch diameter of wood . But not any saw can run a long bar with the full length of the bar in wood . 13:33 Put the saw into a 30inch diameter bit of wood and see what happens then . A lot of people don't realise it's not the length of bar that matters it the size of the wood you are cutting that matters
you are correct. I actually have more footage of these saws cutting a cooking off of a dry oak stump @ 18" inches. I would say it is buried and the results are eye opening. I run a 28" often on my 60cc saws and they are fantastic. I would also agree that they are NOT fantastic buried though they "can" do it. Thank you again
For anyone running a small saw like this, I highly recommend a narrow kerf setup. It does add a little extra cost, but the performance is well worth it. No extra noise or fuel consumption.
Thank you for watching and commenting. Those setups seem to be pretty cool for sure and are popular on the 2511T for climbers if I remember correctly. Thank you again
@mattfleming86 The easiest solution is to keep your stock sprocket and run an .043 B&C in the stock pitch. I'm a fan of the Woodland Pro bars on the Echo for the value and color.
@oakiewoodsman Most people don't know about the narrow kerf 3/8 and .325 on the 2511t. The original oil drive gear works for 1/4 and 3/8 setups, but not .325. The newer N saws come with a 7 pin oil drive gear that works with the .325 sprocket. Sorry for nerding out.
@@TimberTrainer That seems to be the best option for the 3510. Supposedly there ARE alternate clutch drums that fit the 3510 but I have yet to get a PN from anyone who claims to have done it or seen it... Which really limits one to 3/8 or 3/8 lol.
Good stuff right here. Of course my take away is first, love the real time "empirical" data. Second, why put the time and money into a saw when a stock dealer supported saw will out perform it in so many ways. Over the years I've got the the realization the porting thing is over rated unless u are racing a displacement class or you are into the hot rod thing for esoteric reasons only an enthusiast can understand.
Thank you Walt for watching and taking the time to comment regarding this. If anyone in the comment section has not been to this channel but loves chainsaws and learning, this man is where it is at! Especially if you like the Swedish stuff old or new. Heck, if you run something else, there is still something to be gained @afleetcommand! Thank you again sir
Yep, I suffer from self diagnosed CAD, and I’d never go back to a stock pro grade saw. Beater saw to leave roll around in side box of truck sure. Saw I use all the time, nope.
Based on my personal experience with the Poulan 2150 (running at 18" bar) and knowing that I have a friend that has cut a lot of firewood with the Stihl MS170 I did NOT expect the CS310 Echo to be that much of a dog! The biggest issue with the MS170 is the sealed, nontunable carburetor and the 2150 has that. The best thing about the 2150 is that every single one I have owned was free! Now that I am older (wiser???) I can fully appreciate the little green monsters, although I currently only own one it is my most used saw these days.
Stock the saw if VERY chocked up! Thank you for watching and sharing. When I had a 180, the saw seemed a bit more open and used fuel at a VERY fast rate in comparison. My dad has a 170. I need to do a test with that saw.
@@oakiewoodsman oddly enough I just ran across some (so far) unverifiable information that the Poulan 2150 actually may have had two different cylinder sizes, one about 35cc and one 40cc. My tag says 40cc but if it is supposed to be 2.1 cubic inches that would be about 35cc according to all the information I can find.
@@oakiewoodsman now the plot thickens. My serial number ends in -7 and the tag actually says 42cc. I have seen references to different marks of 2150 and I have seen tags that said 36cc and 38cc so now I have no idea what it is lol.
When I was 12 my dad started me off with a stihl 170. I bucked quite a few cord of firewood with one. Had an echo 670 AND an 029 that were both down and he let me borrow a 170 to finish my firewood with and it was painful. I’d rather limb all day with an 036 with a 25” light bar than use a 170. A 170 is the saw you keep to loan or teach with as well as this little echo. A stihl 250 is the smallest I’d ever go. 45cc for anyone that’s a husky fan. I agree that there is a place for these saws with homeowners. For me, I’ve got two boys that are gonna learn on a little unmodified 30cc 😊
Those are a tough long lasting little saw, if you only use it for limbs and tiny trees it's fine. The small echo saws only need a muffler mod and a retune IMO. I'm not bashing the guy who ported it but 75% of the power gains come from gutting the muffler, that's just how it is with most all clamshell saws that cant be machined for more compression. I mess around porting saws but only port ones that gain a noticeable amount when modded, some just get a muffler mod.
You are correct! i actually have a muffler for the Stock saw and the gains were tremendous. That is actually all shown in the other video I referenced. The muffler mod is the best bang for the buck. He did other things like it has a larger carb if I remember correctly and so forth. Anway, thank you for watching!
Thank you for watching and I appreciate the kind words. I generally wear ALL the PPE when I am working. When I cut a few cookies for a video, I have a tendency to "risk" it. I know that it may not be the best practice but when I am sure footed and not trying to crank through bucks, I feel good doing it like this. Disclaimer: Best Practice is to ALWAYS use PPE.
I run 100% stock (MS 171). The only wood I've encountered that caused trouble like what you experienced is elm that's 2-3 feet in diameter. As is the case with your stock CS 310, I think learning to let the saw do the work is important. There's nothing to be gained from digging the saw into the wood and trying to force it through faster. It can help you learn good technique. The bigger issue is that the air filter seems inadequate (I find sawdust behind the filter every time I clean it). I'm guessing that will eventually result in the saw burning up. Until then, I'll borrow and adapt an adage from craftsmen: "This is my cheap saw. There are many like it, but this one is mine."
Good deal! Very good and thankful for your comments. I like my dad’s ms170. I think they seem to have a little more power but are VERY thirsty little machines. I need to get his out sometime! You are correct about letting the saw do the work for sure.
@@oakiewoodsman I know a common complaint about the 171 is that it's underpowered. I've noticed mine has come alive more recently. I don't know if it just took that long to get through the roughly 10 tanks where it is supposed to develop its maximum power (I initially got it in May 2022 to cut up a downed Bradford Pear, which was the only tree on the property, health issues in my household made it necessary to move closer to my in-laws early last year, with that move came farming with my in-laws and more need for the saw) or if I've gotten accustomed to what the saw can handle. It might be both. Even when I first started using it, I compared it to taking a hot knife and letting it melt its way through butter rather than trying to push it through.
@@karlrovey I bet the saw is getting better and your technique is getting better. Also, often times, it can be difficult to get that new chain feeling back. Keep it up and glad you are getting to run the saw however I am sorry for the difficult situation. Be safe friend!
This is why an Echo CS-310 (30 cc) is $220 brand new. It is what it is. It beats using a handsaw is the best description. It's not a knock on Echo or the grade of saw. Bar length is irrelevant. Porting obviously helps, but nothing beats a little more size. Anyone new to cutting firewood should try to buy the best 50+ cc class chainsaw they can afford. Having said that - let's say you own a nice professional grade 50+ cc chainsaw, and it gets pinched/stuck in a log/tree. Having an extra small chainsaw around still beats a handsaw! 🙂

I run a stock Husqvarna 450 rancher with the x-torque engine with a 20 inch .325 pitch full skip chain and it is a beast, looking forward to porting it
I sure appreciate you watching! Are you going to port it yourself? If so, that is more than I have ever done. The most gains on a saw like that typically come from a muffler mod and tuning alone. If you haven't check the other video I mentioned in this video, please make sure you do so. It shows the saw stock, the stock saw with a muffler mod and the ported saw all using the same bar and chain. Times and everything! here is the video: th-cam.com/video/7S-w9YlLCk0/w-d-xo.html
@oakiewoodsman I enjoyed the video that you attached I am going to send my saw to a shop to have it ported but for right now I am ordering a moded muffler for if you don't mind might suggest a full ship square ground chain for your Husqvarna saw you will be surprised at the speed it cuts

Great little machine! They have a purpose for sure. I love taking it when clearing fence row and cutting small trees off at ground level. Every tool has a purpose! Large powerful saws are not good at the two tasks I just mentioned. Thanks for watching!
I'm curious, on the modded saw we can hear sputtering and the begging of each cookie cut. What makes that sound, wich dissappears before ending the cookie? Thank you
take a look at a comment below by @twillis8601. He asked a question about this and someone that knows far more than I do replied. His comment is surely the best here regarding the performance! Thank you you for watching and commenting!
Always have loved the 50cc class of saw because it is the smallest "professional" grade that you can get for a decent price. I still love my 440/435's because that's what I started with but I use them more as a beater than anything else. I've always looked at the 3510 and wondered if there was any chance to get it to be a nice lightweight limbing saw but would need to be ported and just don't think it'd justify the cost especially because a lot of builders won't build the clamshell saws.
That is a very hard thing to say. What about a ported rear handle 2511? Hard Working Man has one of them? Ultimate limber and VERY light? Plenty of performance stuff out there for them too!
@@oakiewoodsman very true always forget they have the little top handles they converted lol but the price on them is still abysmal. I agree with what you said in the video though whatever you got will work, keeping a sharp chain is more important than anything!
that saw with just a simple muffler mod is pretty spicey if I remember correctly. Aaron A Lynch may have a Top handle for sale. I would be watching his channel. I think he just got it done today!

I have one of the little 310s here you can have been ported but so many hours on it it won't pull a 18 inch bar anymore. I have the short 12 inch bars on it when I need. I guarantee it's cut a million fence stays at least. I cut cedar for a living so don't want to lift a 50 cc saw all day. I use the 3510 now just a tiny bit heavier. That old 310 will still out cut a timber wolf 550 as long as you don't put the big bar on
Wow! thank you for interesting story and information! Are you taking about Easter Red Cedar/Juniper? I have always wanted to get into a stand and cut that stuff! I figured a long bar would be good to get reach because man o man are those needles sharp in them things! Also good you mentioned the 3510. Someone else mentioned small CC big power and I think a ported 2511 rear handle would be an excellent choice. So small, and so much aftermarket support and many ppl getting good gains from them for sure. Thank you again and enjoyed having you here!
@@oakiewoodsman ya I cut the eastern red. I have a market for every size as long as tall and straight from being grown in big timber. excellent! that is amazing. Whenever I have driven down south I am in Awe of how much of that stuff there is here in OK. The forestry dept says it takes over 5 acres of land per day in our state if I remember correctly! That is insane to think about. I bet it is a bit more tough to find it in the taller timber. The wood is so pretty when it is tall and straight. Love seeing it like that over near Roaring river in MO and up around Branson. Lots of it growing amongst the other trees and it is beautiful. Otherwise it grows like a lopsided bowling all on the ground. Interesting stuff for sure. Be safe and enjoy it out there!@@Andrew-sanders
I am in a position currently where literally every single $ counts. Because of that, I would have to say no. Not because I don’t want one. They brought the price up too close to the 572XP. I have never run either so that is not fair from my end. As a consumer, it would be hard to swallow. When I watch them online, they are ok kinda like a 501p is ok and a 620P is ok. Out of the 3 mentioned, I think the 620 performs the best from what I can tell from the dealer. What say you? do you only run ECHO or will you run anything good? Like I said, a 7310 would be interesting but it would be hard to spend the $ on one.
@oakiewoodsman that's understandable an I only have echos I have cs 400 cs 501p an cs620p I've been thinking about getting a 7310p to add to the collection but idk yet lol an I never ran any 70 cc saw yet but who knows lol

that is awesome that I have helped you out a bit in the your Chainsaw action and your 661 Stihl! You sure do cut quite a bit of wood over there in PA! Thanks again man!
Good job. Echo is good but shindawia is better ❤❤. I work at a BBQ in Pensacola FL & echo is what I use. My favorite saw is cs590 fully upgraded but no port job. I also have a cs7310 ported this one runs big bar for big wood, then my luv shindawia 492 stock just a nice saw to run.
I am not familiar with the Shindaiwa 492 saw. Sound pretty cool though. I have thought about adding some red to my group someday but there is this pesky thing called space and another called $. Both can be remedied with a little more $$$ hahaha.. Thank you for sharing and keep running those saws and doing it safely. Thanks again!
They are a great way to start for sure. No shame and nothing to be ashamed of. I am just thinking about when I cut up all the elm with the bow saw 😂 Did you get the piston into the 572XP?
Right on, bow saw is the worst for sure. Finally got everything for the 572xp, and will be back in business asap. Been bombarded with other work, buddies ts400 Stihl got crushed by loader and had to repair. The part time hobby chainsaw repair branched out to concrete saws and trimmers now by word of mouth. Ain’t complaining I like working on small engine 2 strokes, let’s me use and try out.
That's not what I came away with. I see a difference between a 30 cc stock saw (most likely 3/8 low pitch chain), ported small saw, and a 50 cc stock saw (.325 pitch chain). If I had to choose one to cut firewood for the day, I would pick a 50+ cc homeowner's saw over a pro grade 30 cc chainsaw. I wouldn't get that hung up on pro grade vs homeowner if one is short on funds.
I never said about getting a "pro-grade" 30cc! Such a thing doesn't exist. Even most top handles are over 30cc. I meant get the husqvarna (or stihl equivalent). The 545 being the bare minimum (quite why it exists when you could get the 550xp I'm not sure). @@driftlesshunter9200
Thanks @bobaverage559 for the comment. I think that if a person wants performance, cannot port themselves or at least do a muffler mod, these saws should not be messed with in terms of performance. There is not an actual reason besides fun and curiosity to do such a thing. It is very fun to run. The 2511T is a spicey little hopped up saw and that is where I would go specifically if I were going to spend money on a small powerhouse. If you wanted a rear handle version, they have that too! Hard Working Man has one of those that Dyno Joe did for him.
Thanks @driftlesshunter9200 for being a part of the discussion. @bobaverage559, I think it is strange that the 545 and 555 and 565 all exist myself. Kinda like GMC and Chevy. Why? Ok, there is however a case that possibly the 545 could be a more durable less rev happy saw and that is possibly a reason. Walt @afleetcommand really likes his 565 if I recall correctly. Anyway, interesting discussion for sure!

I am not sure it is “all of a sudden”. I think Testosterone unbridled along with Pride and Unwarranted Loyalty produce this sort of behavior. IMHO I believe the concept of Brand loyalty is foolish. Thank you for watching! if you are saying that the stock saw is out of tune drastically and therefore cutting that poorly, you are unfortunately mistaken. Seems maybe your (people) have no understanding of the Boost that can be gained by properly porting a chainsaw. By the way, they should also realize the length of the Bar has nothing to do with the size of the tree. a 8" trunk is an 8" trunk period and regardless of the length of the bar/chain, the Diameter of the trunk remains the same. I have a bad back(70yrs. old) and most of my saws have been converted to longer bars - mainly for Reach. *Note: nothing wrong with owning a 30cc saw, but for any cutting in that range I just grab my 80v electric 18" saws. for bigger wood I like my 49cc & 63cc saws.

AP, I a this thing on an Oak Stump fully buried and I was SHOCKED! Of course, that is on footage as well! See ya my friend and thank you once again!

The trolls bring some good entertainment to my soul! I get a laugh out of them for sure!
Keep practicing with the cookies and you'll be juggling running chainsaws in no time Oakie 😉😉
hahahaha.... just figured I would show what it "takes" to be a TH-camr! hahaha
Agreed!
I'd love to switch over my 3510 from 3/8lp to 325 narrow or even 1/4. or even 3/8 .043.
Excellent comment...

Interesting!
@@oakiewoodsman now the plot thickens. My serial number ends in -7 and the tag actually says 42cc. I have seen references to different marks of 2150 and I have seen tags that said 36cc and 38cc so now I have no idea what it is lol.
hahahaaha.... that is a VERY confusing thing!
Love this comment! Thank you for watching and I agree with you and appreciate the stories. Take care of them boys!
A little personal protection goes a long way .
Thank you for watching and I appreciate the kind words. I generally wear ALL the PPE when I am working. When I cut a few cookies for a video, I have a tendency to "risk" it. Great video, Man. 👊
I sure do appreciate that and thank you for stopping by and watching! You have a great channel yourself sir!

I love my little 310. Even with all the internet calling it a dog, I'd buy it all over again. It does what I need it to do very well.
Thank you
It had a limited coil and It’s bouncing off the rev limiter at times.
take a look at a comment below by @twillis8601.

The stock saw sounds very choked up with that muffler. I'd bet a muffler mod or even a pipe and a carb tune would do wonders for it.

I need to get my mill finished be way faster than the chainsaw mill I have. I am not far away just in Ada. I have run every make and about every middle of saw I will stay with the echo. The 3510 is 2 years old runs 40 plus hours a week repair bill for it's life has been 6 chain sprockets. The little 310 is the same nothing but sprockets never have even changed plug
excellent! that is amazing.
Wow buddy what a difference that's amazing an of course another awesome video an would you ever could consider getting a 7310p echo?

I think that's a fair enough test. Just reinforces my opinion though; buy pro grade, whenever you can. Everything else is a sunk cost fallacy.

Seems maybe your (people) have no understanding of the Boost that can be gained by properly porting a chainsaw.
