I had this on vinyl in my high school days. Didn't listen to it frequently, but when I did, loved it so much. I learned waltz on guitar. Really great album!

Any idea where one might find a copy of this on CD or mp3 download? I'd like to at least find "Jenny Lynn", and also "Boston Boy". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Boston Boy was, to my knowledge, recorded only once by Monroe; it is (was?) only available on the MCA 4-CD retrospective set that came out in the mid-90s. The Bill Monroe's Uncle Pen album is not available on CD, although all of the tunes are on the Monroe box set from Bear Family records of Germany (I think on the box from the '60s). I don't know of any availability of Jenny Lind, except on this same box set. It is available, though, on the Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe CD from County Records; Bill plays the mandolin breaks on that entire record. Kenny said that Bill was the perfect sideman on the session.
@@joecline2228 @theMowjones There is also another Bear Family box called 'My Last Days On Earth', which includes that recording of 'Boston Boy', if the MCA set isn't available. I'm quite sure it is the one found on TH-cam (but under Kenny Baker's name). Bill Monroe plays 'Jenny Lynn' in a shorter version on his Homespun Tapes video (Vol. 1). (If of interest, the tablature is on Vol. 2)
I have this record and I say, that if you turn the stereo know to the left that you will hear GREAT guitar with leading bass runs. This to me as a fiddler , is just what I want in a guitarist. listen again to the Kiss Me Waltz and you will hear what I mean. Note, that J. Monroe wasn't the engineer that mixed this album so, he isn't the one that left it this way. As great as the music is on this record, much of it is a bit muddy in the mix. JMHO.
@@ashreeder9156 That was my thought, too. While listening to "Methodist Preacher," James Monroe's playing reminded me of the way Elvin Campbell and Kenny Applebee back up fiddlers in the Missouri Valley style -- and if that isn't dance music, I don't know what is.

Those days were the highest point in bluegrass --never to be equaled! It was so amazing to have lived through those days.

Guitar by James Monroe, while adequate, does not seem to come up with the driving rhythm, required for dance music. Just my opinion.

I totally agree. His rhythm is jerky and not fluid. Stereo just accents that.
