    New Year, Same Me! Come along with me in a day of ripped out infusion sets, my favorite protein bars, and of course eating - low carb edition!
    I get a ton of comments asking if I’m low carb, keto or any of the various other diets floating around out there. Though I don’t subscribe to any diet in particular, these comments have inspired me to make a video showing you what a low carb day in my life looks like, when I choose to eat that way. I hope you find it useful and helpful!

    Andrea I just want to tell you that I have gone through almost all of your videos and you are such a gift to this T1D community. I have been a diabetic through my teens, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and now I’m in my 50’s. Listening to you talk about everything I have been through over the years with such clarity is so touching because you are helping so many people. I feel reawakened that yes I’m a T1D, and it’s okay and I’m not alone. And yes, I would love to see you do a video about the good things about being a diabetic because there are lots of good things and I’m sure you will articulate it beautifully.❤️🌹

    Regarding low carb diet for DT1's I've had some experience that was really counterintuitive for me and quite an eye-opener. Maybe others have shared my experience, perhaps you haven't. Diabetes is an all encompassing, personal and tricky disease that is a different experience for everybody. So I don't want you to read my experience as the truth, only for you to put my two cents into consideration and reflect on whether it might helpful to you.
    I'm an overweight guy and was on low carb for 12 years, ever since the day of my diagnosis really. Not having a single potato or any pasta or any rice at all was good for me according to doctors, since I'd need less insulin and I could do with weight control that way. I love sushi so I saved that for an annual treat, but aside from that I have been pretty strict in my main meals. This was my entire reality, and I thought it was the same for everybody. It wasn't until many years later I had ever even heard of a T1D eating normal food. I remember thinking to myself "Well that's ridiculous, he's going to get fat with all that insulin!", while I was chewing my low-carb non-potato meal.
    But it turned sour. Last fall, on year 14 of diabetes I was made to realise that I had developed a really nasty problem with food. I loved food and I hated food. I over ate A LOT. Everything was right food/wrong food, and I just couldn't stop thinking about sugars and carbs even though it was forbidden. I was craving it every night to the point that I could hardly fall asleep. It actually got so bad I was having binges like every other day and it became a habit to still my growing anxiety with that kind of food. But I was TOTALLY oblivious to it! Before Christmas I grew conscious about the problem but I wasn't strong enough to do anything about it. So I got on a medication that calmed my nerves and this general feeling of anxiety, and another one to beat my depression. They helped me to get through the nightly drive home without stopping for unnecessary food. Or driving 60 miles in the middle of the night in order to get to the nearest open McDonald's because I was having some unrelinquishing fixation about a burger.
    Like just a few weeks ago I had a mental breakthrough, and I decided to start incorporating carbs into my breakfast and just insulin for it. The reasoning I came up with was that if I got some carbs during the day I might not crave them at night. It was a stab in the dark. I was worried sick about how much more insulin I was going to need but then decided things couldn't get any worse anyways. So i tried it.
    Life came along a week later when I got news that I was going of the pens onto a pump. This was an effort that I had incited earlier with the help of my psychiatric team in order to get away from my old habits with pens and force myself into new habits. A fresh start in order to create a better relationship with food. After this was announced I started to hunt down resources in order to prepare myself for the switch. So I started searching for MiniMed videos and "pump pros and cons"-videos. That is when I, among other things, found this channel. It is also when I, for the first time, heard about carb counting and insulin-to-carb ratios - a system that had totally slipped me by for 14 years. I found it was how you operated the pump. So I implemented it straight away. Basically I picked five regular meals off of the web and didn't skip anything, potatoes, rice, flour, tablespoons of sugar. (Although I did skip ketchup because I just cannot ketchup an Italian dish. ) Weighing every gram and counting it all up and applying a guestimated dosage. This wasn't ever something I planned on sticking to, it was just so that I could learn what my insulin to carb ratio was.
    And what do you know, at the start of the week I thought I had a carb to insulin ratio of about 3 g to 1u, but it turns out It's more like 9 or 10, maybe even more! And I'm over 200 pounds. I've had the lowest intake of insulin in YEARS and had to drop my basal by 15 units and counting just the past seven days and I'm still seeing a slow nightly decent on my curve. I only had a single high all week and that was like 190/10,5 which has never happened... and what's even crazier is that I'm not thinking CONSTANTLY about getting bread or candy or snacks anymore and I can finally just go to bed with a glass of water and feel like alright!! After so much frustration it was fu***g about time....!
    Getting my high sugars manageable got me wanting to be more active at work. My mental capacity has grown, and enjoying my workdays a lot more than I've in months, maybe years. I realised that when I am active and moving at work I didn't need nearly as much insulin as I thought..... So with the tips of these videos I made an attempt to control the rate my body absorbs food and insulin through movement after meals. It works like magic for me...
    What have I learned this week? My body really needs carbs. It responds amazingly well to physical activity. Carb counting is amazing. I don't need nearly as much insulin now as when I was binge eating to make up for the carbs my body and mind was screaming for.
    To conclude in all honesty, I absolutely think low carb is a great tool. It decreases your needed intake of insulin. Dropping carbs is such an easy equation. No carbs = no bolus. A few carbs = low bolus. Tons of carbs = all of the boluses. It can really save you a lot of energy when you just can't do it that day. It's knowledge that you can carry with you in your box of diabetic sledgehammers for tricky situations. Like travel or mishaps.
    My experience is totally linked to my own tricky psyche and my lack of knowledge at the time.
    I encourage you all to find your own beautiful way of dealing with the day-to-day. But I do want you all to be aware of the things that your mind and body is telling you. I needed psychiatric help in order to wake up. Hopefully someone out there will read this and not need to go through everything I did.
    One day I will probably be dropping carbs again, but now I have these new tools of carb-counting and awareness of my personal warning signs so that I know when it is time to pull the brakes. I have created a comfort zone on both ends of the spectrum, I now know how to drop carbs, but I also know how to eat regular food. It is such and empowering feeling.
    Stay healthy in body and mind and good luck to anyone of you who is trying to better their life, no matter how! And always question, question, question whether what your doctors told you 14 years ago is actually working out for you right now.

      Maybe you have come across the book called Mastering Diabetes? It’s fantastic (I live with T1D) they recommend you flip it to 80% carbs and only 10% fat (10% protein) they 2 men who wrote the book both have T1D too.
      They need about very little insulin for High carb meals. They recommend this most especially I someone is overweight (like me). Hope this helps you. They have a TH-cam & FB with the same name: Mastering Diabetes

    This cheered me up! Had a horrible night my pump battery went flat and I hadn't restocked my bedside table so I had to trudge out to my garden office at 3am in the freezing rain. So angry with myself. Decided to make a hot chocolate, over estimated and work up to a hypo at 8am. Went back to sleep and woke up to this video. Feeling better.

    I just watched your libre video from 2 years ago, I’m working in Germany for a year or so and my doctor over here suggested I try the libre to get a hand on my A1C. He gave me the libre 2 trial kit with one sensor and I am absolutely thrilled that I can now know what my sugar is at all times without pricking myself which I do not do as often as I should. yet again, I'm amazed and inspired by your energy and positivity, Andrea. And (in all the best ways) I'm reminded of how lucky I am to be Type 2 - you guys with Type 1 definitely have a far tougher time of things. Which brings me round-circle back to mad respect for how you handle YOUR life.
    I don't know about you but for me, sometimes it's easy to just let things go - whether that's because I've just tired of the discipline, or I think I"m on top of things so can afford to be complacent … or I'm just bored of the diet or just want to live a normal life and ignore that I might not live beyond mid 50's (which, to be honest, wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have a son).
    And I see that even you have "cycles" of energy and posting. That's ok - everyone's allowed to be human :) Maybe that's just the way it is with Diabetes. Either way - it's good to see you posting again. Please don't stop. Thanks for your note from an hour ago Andrea. You are very welcome. For what it is worth, and to make it easier to spot at the store, the Trader Joe's non-cheese pesto sauce I referred to six days ago is called "Vegan Kale, Cashew & Basil Pesto" and comes in a clear round plastic container that is about an inch and a half high and about about 4 and a half inches in diameter. I often sprinkle parmesan cheese into my pasta when I use this pesto product. Enjoy. Is Trader Joe's in London?

    My son just got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last month . It is nice to have people who encourage each other about this topic because the more you know about type 1 diabetes the less anxiety you will have about your beloved one .
    Any suggestions for low carb meals that help you to lower your blood sugar with less insulin ?

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm so sorry to hear of your son's recent diagnosis, I'm sure this is a very overwhelming time for you all 💙 This is a very encouraging and supportive community - I promise - so please know this and lean into it anytime, especially when you need those extra boosts of support! In terms of go to low carb meals, I swap out regular rice in favor of cauliflower rice for lower carb side options, or any rice-based dishes really. I pump up my fat when doing this to ensure I'm taking in enough calories (think avocados, nut butters, nuts & seeds). I also have a chia seed pudding recipe video on my channel that's a great low carb breakfast idea. I also love NuGo slim bars for low carb morning breakfast or mid afternoon snacks. I basically prioritize veggies and protein as much as possible. A good building block for me is protein, cauliflower rice + veg side, as a very basic start. Oh - and gluten free soy sauces tastes great on cauliflower rice I've found (I do GF because of being Celiac - but you could do regular if not!) And another great swap for me is unsweetened almond milk rather than regular milk as it has way less sugar (well, none, as long as it's unsweetened) and has virtually no impact on my blood sugar as a result! I hope this helps give you some inspiration for your precious son!!!! 💙

    Thank you for this video! As I've mentioned on another video of yours, I've had T1 Diabetes since I was 8 years old, so I've had it for 32 years at this point. Your situation with the pump site getting pulled out by the door really hit home for me, because it's happened more than once to me. However, what you do to address it is different than what I do. I do not start completely over. What I do is I take the Pump site applicator and just apply it to a new site. I then remove the long string and get rid of it. My pump will still have the original string that was pulled out (Don't know what else to call it), I would then just attach it to my new pump site. This way, I don't throw out Insulin that is still good, and I don't go through all of my supplies quicker. I do check my blood sugar to make sure nothing is off, and for the most part, I'm usually good. I then change the site when it's either been 3 days from the site switch, or when my insulin supply is low. Have you done this? Hope you're well and healthy!

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of the above Magnus - I really appreciate it! Actually I did do what you describe above another time when I pulled my site out, but with this one I was so low on insulin anyway my tslim system wouldn't let me 'restart' the session if that makes sense. It's a new pump to me and I'm trying to get to grips with how to 'game' the system of sorts, because as you've rightly said and identified, it's really so so so awful to lose perfectly good insulin! Thank you so much for sharing with me and everyone else here what you do - because this is great info!!!!! 💙🙏🏻

I have had a few good days but today I'm overwhelmed with what to eat, so thank you so much for posting fun things to eat, it helps me feel reassured that I won't eat salads everyday, although I do love salad. • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know what that's a great idea/question. I imagine pesto would have less carbs, but I don't tend to eat it because it's primarily made from cheese and I don't do dairy - but they have all sorts of vegan versions of things these days - so I'm thinking I should give this a go! Thank you for suggesting!

      You're welcome Andrea. By the way, I have here Trader Joe's "Kale, Cashew & Basil Pesto. For what it is worth to you and your followers, the ingredients are "Kale, Olive Oil blend (olive oil, extra virgin olive oil) , water, basil, cashew butter (dry roasted cashews, safflower oil or sunflower oil) garlic, lemon juice, seas salt, black pepper." So I don't see any cheese here. One serving is 1/4 cup. Note that the total carb for one serving are 5g. I don't know if there are any Trader Joe's markets in the U.K. But there probably are in Michigan. By the way, my son graduated in June from the U. of St. Andrews in Scotland. He really enjoyed living in the U.K.

Luckily I'm in better control now, and noticeable eye issues came on quickly at least when it came to being noticeable. One day I was fine, the next eye was blurred. Diabetic pump supplies should be available over the counter at a much lower cost than they are in the US.
    I love your detailed analysis of your meal but do sometimes find maintaining a good blood sugar is more of an art than a science. I can eat the same thing, so the same exercise, take the same insulin one day to the next and my sugars can still be vastly different.
    While I do read labels, I find my lifetime of diabetes (45 years T1) has given me an ability to estimate carbs and bolus needs. I’ve been on a pump for less than a year and am now much more confident in its control IQ, basil, and bolus options but still haven’t mastered the pre-bolus timing just right...

    Is that an engagement ring on your finger? It looks like a beautiful ring . And yes to the positives in your life. My son (30 and type 1 since 11) gets depressed with all the swings and unexplained reasons for highs or lows. His plans are often messed up and he can't remember the last time he slept all night. If he gets 6 hours in a night it is a big deal. He isn't married and thinks it will likely stay that way because it is such a difficult life altering illness, who wants to join that team. He says the only thing consistent about t1d is that it isn't consistent. One day he is high during the night. The next day low during the night and maybe the third day he has ok bloodsugars. No clear pattern and no clear solution. I worry about him becoming depressed and alone . He isn't seeing too many positives.

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! It is indeed an engagement ring on my finger - and thank you! :) My fiancee and I just got engaged before Christmas 🥰. I'm so sorry to hear that your son battles all these highs and lows, both literally and figuratively. Diabetes is A LOT to deal with and it's constant and never ending. Some things have that definitely helped me are getting a CGM (helps sleep throughout the night) and getting a pump that works with the CGM (I have the Tslim/Dexcom G6 combo). I have no idea if this would be possible for your son, but I can tell you it's been an absolute game changer for me, and is worth looking into in my opinion. Also, he should not be afraid to talk to his doctor about all of these struggles. It's hard and they should be able to help support him through these difficulties. Diabetes is hard, but it doesn't have to ruin your life - I so so so believe this. And with regards to his finding a partner - it's 100000% possible!! Please tell him this! I have a wonderful, supportive partner who loves me, not in spite of my diabetes but because of it, because it's part of what makes me me - I promise you there are amazing people out there who want to love and support our fellow man - be them doctors, strangers on the street, or people we share a romantic life with. This world is FULL of these people and I have every confidence that your son will find someone. Please encourage him from me, let him no that he is in no way alone and there is brightness for him in this world, not only in spite of his diabetes but because of it! My best to you too - that you may know how best to support him and find your own way through the difficulty in seeing him in a somewhat darker place than I'm sure you would like. You are not alone, neither one of you are, and I thank you so much for being so honest and sharing these things with me. May the love, light and joy of this world shine it's way though the cracks of your life and may you and your son find a way to push that door open and let the light in! 💙💙💙

    Hi Andrea. I’m totally novice at this compared to you. Diagnosed 9-2020 with LADA. Anyway, have you tried the Simpatch? It is a pre-cut adhesive patch that fits perfectly over the auto soft 90 and xc. I started using it after the very first time I accidentally ripped out an infusion set on my thigh. I don’t doubt that you’ve heard of it but if you haven’t, you may want to try to get some. Since I’ve started using them, I haven’t yet accidentally ripped out a set. I hope this helps. Hi there! I came up on ur video looking for carb counting to insulin ratio. I’ve recently been diagnosed with type 1 at 25 y/o a few weeks ago and I’m having a hard time maintaining my blood sugar under 200 consistently. I’m eating low carb and I’m also having a hard time counting carbs to figure out how much insulin I can give myself based of how much carbs I eat. For breakfast I noticed my carb intake is usually around 50g total but the rest of the day it’s lower. Dinner usually has around 50g as well. It is such a frustrating thing. I have no family history of diabetes and this was such a shock diagnosis and I’m also battling really painful cystic acne that got worse when I started rapid and basal insulin. Can you help with carb counting to take insulin? I’m at such a loss because I feel scared to go out and do my regular things when my blood sugar is over 200 during the day and it is really making me feel depressed. I also lost weight before being diagnosed and am at 120 lbs now from 130lbs and have been trying to gain weight before this diagnosis now doing low carb makes it so much harder to gain weight. What app or machine was that you used to put in the carb and it tells you how much insulin you need?

      I rely heavily on frozen veg and canned items that are quite budget friendly. I know not everything I show here is that, and I am very aware that I'm in a very fortunate position to afford all of these foods. I would just very much recommend stocking up on frozen items, potatoes, canned beans/legumes and sauces to help keep costs down. I really really hope this helps you and I thank you so much for raising this concern as I'm sure others have this question too! 🙏🏻

    How do I loose weight with T1d all I do is keep gaining and I just turned 16 I’m 65 kgs and I wanna be 52kgs anything would help I developed a bad habit of not taking insulin until the point that I go into DKA which I don’t get treatment for and just wait it out but I’d rather be skinny then take insulin and this sucks cause I don’t don’t want that to be the reason I die (honestly looking forward to dying) should I go low carb ? Or count calories cause I want to keep my blood sugar levels in normal range but also loose excess body fat

      Oh my friend. I hear you. And I've been there. TRUST ME when I say that. Please know eliminating your insulin is not the answer. It may work in the short term but in the long term it will actually wreck your insides - and yes, your metabolism too. I would suggest you speak to a nutritionist asap to get yourself on some even footing when it comes to your goals and the food you can eat to achieve that. We're all different, so what works for me, may not work for you. Things that make me feel best are diets that increase my insulin sensitivity. I went plant based a few years ago and it really helped me heal my relationship with food. Just a thought. But you need to reach out to someone for help - in your way, in your time, but trust me, I know when you're at is a lonely place and actually if it gives you any peace of mind, I actually weigh less now than I do when I was omitting insulin. Because I'm now balanced with my blood sugars my hormones have leveled out and I'm able to eat intuitively and not be in a binge purge cycle. It's hard to break out of, but I think thats' really important to know because right now I feel like it's all about the weight for you (as it as for me when I was in that place) and to know that you can actually heal yourself and balance your weight better by not omitting I think is key and it makes me choose recovery every single day. I'm thinking about you my friend and sending you lots and lots of strength and love in this difficult time. Believe me when I say you are not alone.💙💙💙

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are just so so so not alone my friend. Please know this. I can just so relate to exactly where you’re at. It’s okay you can’t see a nutritionist. I completely understand. Take it all one step at a time. Be kind to yourself. Walking can be magical. Just moving your body to help get those happy feelings going. To gain the strength to make one good decision and then next and the next. Be kind to yourself. And please know you are not alone. It’s hard to turn the behavior around and I know it really doesn’t feel like it at first but over time if you stick with taking your insulin you’ll have more Energy and your metabolism will start to fire off normally and food will become your friend. I wish I could take this pain away from you. Just remember, you are not alone, and the road to recovery is just one decision after the next. One step at a time. You are worth it. You are loved and needed in this world. ❤️🪴

    Yea, I agree too, T1d bring a lot of positives too, for me at least, It taught me to be disciplined about myself, don't know if that makes sense.. You'll be more responsible towards the meal you take, your sleeping patterns and how can we forget the math it takes to calculate how many shots of insulin I need. You just gotta keep on learning and experimenting, you'll get the hang of it. It may sound a bit boring but I know the one who understand this, knows it's just a beautiful experience we get everyday.

I understand that people can do what they want and I was in the camp of East what you want for too many years defending my right to “do what I WANT” not what is actually healthy!!! To be fair, this means that you got T1D when puberty started to kick in, and that time period is perhaps the toughest of all regarding BG control. Your insulin needs change constantly, you get huge bursts of growth hormones (which antagonize insulin), your hormones overall are in total chaos, discipline and compliance are very difficult to maintain etc. If puberty is a storm, then adulthood is a rather calm sea by comparison.

    @shesdiabetic - hey, I’ve been T1D for about 30 yrs now and have recently moved to the T-Slim X2. Can you tell me if you use the temporary basal function when working out?

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Welcome to the TSlim system!!! I hope you're loving it!!! When working out on the Tslim I use the activity function within the control iQ - so no need to switch to manual and then set your own temp basal, you can just flip on the activity mode, with control iQ and away you go! It targets your BG at 140 rather than what you have it set to usually. The one thing I will say is that I find I need to switch the activity mode on about 30 mins before actually working out, otherwise I'll dip, but if I have that lead up with the mode on prior I seem to be a ok. And a similar thing goes for when I turn it off, I'll turn it off about 30 mins before ending the working, and that seems to suit my body and keep me surfing in range quite nicely. But we're all different - so what works for me may not work for you - so play around and see how your body does with it, that would be my recommendation! I hope this helps!!!

      Dear Britney, the T2 diabetes is provoked by eating faaar to many concentrated carbohydrates (sugar, everything made of grains of all kinds, starchy veggies, fruits). Basically your pancreas will not be able to keep up with the huge insulin demand and, at some point , injectable insulin will be needed. THE GOOD NEWS is that by following a low carb diet or ketogenic diet, T2 diabetes might disappear. I understand that at 15 is difficult to commit to more strict diet rules but, unfortunately . if you do not take action NOW the further you go eating like you do now the worse it will get. T1 diabetes is totally different than T2 and it can only be kept in check by injectable insulin. T2 on the other hand, as long as you eat wright , and you start NOW eating wright, your pancreas will be able to cope with the insulin demand. Watch the videos of Dr Berg, Dr Jason Fung , th-cam.com/video/JUuHrBwsJ2s/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=VirtaHealth

    I'm surprised that when doing a bolus you count coffee as having carbohydrates. I checked my bag of coffee beans and also googled carbohydrates in coffee and both said there are no carbohydrates in coffee. I realize we are all different, so maybe that's the answer. Or do you add something sweet to your coffee? Otherwise, it seems like overkill.

      Coffee raises adrenaline levels and this affects blood sugar levels.High levels of adrenaline make the liver release more sugar in the blood because the body thinks it is in a stressful situation and it needs sugar to cope with that situation.

    Yet another great vlog Andrea. I'm interested that you deduct the fibre from the carbs in your meal before bolusing. I was originally taught to include the fibre, but often the fibre helps to lower the GI. In that case, I use a square wave bolus e.g. 70% now and 30% over 30 minutes. That is a very personal variable. Just deducting the carbs is a much more consistent method, so I would like to try it for a while. I need plenty of fibre to counteract the side effects of a medication I take. Have you found deducting fibre works better than the square wave option, please?

    • @ShesDiabetic
      @ShesDiabetic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Oh this is a great question! Firstly - you're a pro! Doing square wave boluses and all that - that's very intricate and advanced - wowza!! I probably should do more of this, but I don't tend to deduct fiber on a regular basis. I'm trying to get better about this, but as it stands, unless I'm being super duper diligent, I've found that this works alright for me - but that's not to say it's the correct thing to do - I'm just being honest about my laziness and I'm going to try to do better at this in the future! Sorry I can't be more helpful!! 😅
