People might just view Agnes as a snob but I like her character because U find out why she is so jaded. She had to marry a man who was cruel to her because her brother left them penniless and she was thinking not just of herself but of her younger sister. People are forced to make hard decisions like marrying an unkind person if it means both they and their sister don't end up in the poorhouse.
I really liked Agnes. She was viewed as shrewd and as the because it was easy. But deep down she has emotions and deep thoughts on a lot of situations.
When a parent dies and there is a much older sibling, it seems to make the jealous and envious of what the people around them do - they are NEVER wrong. I see this same pattern in my own sister. She is a glass half empty, I am a glass half full. I don't that I can't change the past, so don't let it interfere with my future - she can't get over the past and used it to establish a Mental Health facility, so she can tell everyone the "proper" why to think - because she paid to learn it.
Christine Baranski referring to her character in the First Person is the kind of dedication that makes her an icon. And I really like that Nixon has gotten a character that allows her to show her warm smile a lot. But my favourites are Peggy and Oscar! Both actors are phenomenal and their characters are easily the most interesting.
She is an amazing actress but the writing is so one note. No depth to the character. A quick Americanized version of Lady Violet. I was hoping she would be like Mrs Levinson. Far better written role. Full disclosure, I’ve not seen episode 3. The 1st two were such letdowns that I’ve decided to wait until they’re available to binge. I also want more from the servant class.
@@chasenip2 her husband beat her & she’s lost at least one child. She was left destitute at a young age & was forced to marry an awful man for her & her sisters survival. She hired a woman of color shortly after the civil war when racial tension was incredibly high & what’s more is she treats her with respect. How is all of this one note?
Now that I understand Agnes, I see how truly wise she is, she was spot on about that rake Mr. Raikes and only had the best intentions in protecting her niece. She's a guardian of tradition and does so with fire and spirit!!
The Gilded Age is my new favorite period series. I love it it! From the opulent surroundings to the spectacular costuming not to mention the riveting story lines. I love it all!
I LOVE Baranski in this role. She is wonderful at showing the many rich layers and nuances of her character and manages to add her own brand of snark and humor at the same time. She does this the same way Maggie Smith does with Violet in Downton Abbey, though the actresses and characters are indeed very individual.
Yay! Character Agnes Van Rhijn (played by Christine Baranski) is wearing my Lady Detalle Antique Victorian button earrings at the start of this (:03 to :09) and then again many other times, how fun! So far I've spotted 4 of my LD earring designs worn by Agnes thru Season 1, a HUGE thank you to the costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone and her wardrobe team, so honored to have my jewelry designs included in this awesome series!!
After watching a review on this show, I thought I'd give it a shot and check out the first episode. I was pleasantly surprised how interesting and intriguing it was. Folks this is quite a good show. I'm glad to have found it. HBO never disappoints!!
Also, Julian Fellowes is the writer and creator, and his work is amazing! If you haven't seen Downton Abbey, I'd highly recommend that show too. Similar to The Gilded Age, it is a slow burn at first but wildly interesting once you get into it.
Even better is the film "Gosford Park", which Julian Fellowes wrote and was the inspiration for Downton Abbey. Amazing film with Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Clive Owen, Kristen Scott Thomas, Ryan Phillppe, Stephen Fry, Emily Watson...and so many more amazing actors.
After seeing Cynthia Nixon in that horrible reboot And Just Like That, you sure can tell what a difference good writing makes!! Thank you Julian Fellows!!
Christine Baransky is a wonderful actress, I just love her in this role. I always watch all movies she stars in. Cynthia Nixon is great as Ada, she and Cristine have great chemistry as sisters. I just love these two in these roles.
I only know Christine Baranski for comedy - even Diane Lockhart is funny - but I do like to see actors step out of the contemporary. However, I wish the make-up artists would pay attention to how women appeared. For instance, those plucked eyebrows would have been considered very low class.
I watched the first two episodes. I have to say I am a fan of the show. It's everything that you'd expect from a Julian Fellows show. Excellent story and characters. I'm just sorry that I have to wait a week to watch a new episode. It's a must watch for sure.
I am thoroughly enjoying this Series. I hope upon hope, that this show will gain the required popularity with it's viewers that it deserves, in order that the show may evolve into several seasons.
The costumes and hairstyles are a show in their own right. The intricate use of color and texture, the elaborate, flamboyant hats, and the heavy, jeweled, capes the ladies wear to go out for the evening…awe inspiring. 👌🏼💯
Solid first episode, second more involving and the third is a knockout. Fellowes’ writing period for television is expert - he begins with every literary cliche of the time, every relationship explained literally in dialogue, in character portrayal and by plot incident, every social convention set out, the staff hierarchy and their jobs shown, it seems it’s all just building blocks but suddenly you are living and breathing with them in that world and in those houses and you understand exactly why Agnes bristles and Bertha competes, Marion obeys and Oscar rule-breaks. It becomes just as important to you if someone is late for tea or wears the wrong dress as it is to them. Fellowes is a master of illustrating and dissecting class behaviour and etiquette that would flummox us today, yet we are so immersed in it we understand it. For us career is so critical, for them not having a career or any obvious employment is critical etc. And I don’t know who costumes this series but you could watch this with the sound turned off and just marvel at what everyone is wearing, the wardrobe is sensational, one breathtaking dress or suit and hat after another.
This is so eloquent! I love Downton Abbey and as a Brit I am interested in giving this a go as I know little about the states during this era. I think I’ll give it a try.
Honestly rooting for Marion and Larry....Peggy obviously comes from a wealthy family.. I think the only one who suspects is Agnes.. She is quick on the uptake

Also, a black man who owned a catering business in the early 1900s in Baltimore left his 3 daughters each an inheritance of 30K each so about 90K which is the equivalent of around 2.5 Million dollars. Madame CJ Walker was an actual millionaire and so was Jerimiah Hamilton and they both lived in New York area
I just re-watched "Da Vinci's Demons" again recently, so it's really wonderful to see Blake Ritson once more here in "The Gilded Age"! I hope the series will be able to continue for at least a few more seasons!
It's really sweet that British writers always give American fans their own version. Jk Rowling did it with Fantastic and Julian has now done it with this for Downton fans. I can't wait to watch it.
I really enjoyed this show. I loved Marian and had no idea that she was Meryl Streep’s daughter! I learned a lot about historical New York and even about myself so I consider this quite a successful show.
@Pokhraj Roy Did you see Cynthia Nixon play the lead, film role as American poet Emily Dickinson ? Released maybe a decade ago. It was a beautifully shot, limited release kind of film (because the subject wouldn't attract everyone). From memory, Cynthia was also involved as a producer - so I think that may have been a passion project for her. It was great to see Cynthia away from her iconic Miranda character.
I find it more rewarding to see the good in those who are often perceived as bad rather than simply celebrate the virtues of those already seen as good. Take Agnes, for example; despite being seen as snobbish and traditional, she treats Peggy with genuine dignity. She deeply understands Peggy’s struggles, both as a person of color and as a woman, as highlighted in their dialogue. Unlike Marian, who offers help with a sense of charity that ends up offending Peggy, Agnes recognizes Peggy as someone engaged in a struggle and in need of assistance-no strings attached. Agnes’s respect for individuals who strive to help themselves, especially in her reference to Peggy, resonates profoundly with me. This principle, so powerfully conveyed, explains why Peggy, a determined woman, opts to work for Agnes, preferring the humility of an exit through the back door over returning to her rich father’s house. Sometimes, especially for those of us with strong ambitions, what we need isn’t charity but rather someone who can look us in the eye and offer an equal deal-simple as that.
I love this series so far. Three episodes in , not only do they go in depth about true Historical New York society and it’s begginings, but they don’t need to act that staunchly British accent were all used to hearing when it comes to period dramas. No one is faking their accent , it’s all true the way they spoke back in the day. The opulence of the first Mega wealthy capitalists in this country and it shows how New York was still a place of opportunity for everyone including the blacks back in that era. The costumes are great and the feuds are real , I wanna see more . And we’re only three episodes in !
I find so much charm and nostalgia in the period movies/shows. Brits do it so well though. This looks interesting as well. Baranski is a legend. She can sing and act, both brilliantly.
I love Peggy. I hate when writers, write these protagonists who zone a lot and need time to do something/understand. Like Harry in Harry Potter, June in the handmaids tale (which was the worst one).

My favorite movie depicting this time and its fall is Orson Welles "The Magnificent Ambersons", really great story.
Don't worry, women and men still use the term sprinstdr freely nowadays. Given how women were treated sometimes not being in a marriage was a gift, especially if you were already rich
"We must have more money!". Well, if that was not just a random phrase but a quote from D. H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner", as it seems... Well, then things are going to get quite complicated for this family.

That actress DOES.NOT. AGE. OMG... She looks the same she did 20 years ago. never knew her name, But she looks amazing. She's been in so many films, very unique and a Nordic look to her.
@@nineteenfortyeight I saw her first on "The Cybill Shepherd Show" and Barsnski played her best friend, a real comedic alcoholic. She was hysterical. And Baranski? Not Nordic. VERY Polish.
I’m really enjoying this wonderful worldliness of that time and how the old and new money doesn’t change…even today’s high society is still very much still old and new money…such an enjoyable series.
I LOVE THIS SERIES!!! Tim McGraw is a fabulous actor and even rides like a cowboy. I like all of the characters and find it hard to wait for the next episode. That actress DOES.NOT. AGE. OMG... She looks the same she did 20 years ago. never knew her name, But she looks amazing. She's been in so many films, very unique and a Nordic look to her.
Baranski? She's 69 years old. Clean living, and dance.
@@nineteenfortyeight I saw her first on "The Cybill Shepherd Show" and Barsnski played her best friend, a real comedic alcoholic. She was hysterical.
And Baranski? Not Nordic. VERY Polish.
Love this series so much.... Well done, HBO.
Haven't watched yet, but sold now
I absolutely loved this universe and can't wait to see more in season 2 🙌🙌🙌💖💖💖
🖤 the show, the acting and the clothes 🖤
I don’t understand how anyone could look at Peggy and the way she dresses and think she was poor 🤔😂💃🏾💰
Gawd, I’m loving this show! 🥰👏🏼 While waiting for Downton Abbey: A New Era!
Simon Jones played the king in the first Downton Abbey film.
I know Doylestown, PA very well. Was great to see this in the show.
I was sad when Ennis died. 😞 The voiceovers from Elsa are SO poetic...a valuable part of the series. Whoever writes them is an amazing writer! I will be VERY sad when the series ends.
This is not 1883 though.
Great show! Love every single minute 💪🏼❤️
i love this movie , i wish to see an episode every day , amazing
I love that Louisa is Meryl Streep’s daughter! Talent galore!
I absolutely love Christine Baranski
I'm a big fan of period series like downtown, velvet, crown so I really hope this is good
