There's only 2 people I was scared of as a kid. Mike Tyson and Gordon Tallis. He used to scare me through the TV screen when he fired up. Glad I never played against him.
Bulldogs supporter here..but tallis is the only player I have seen that looked like he was playing to hurt the opposition..great player from his days off the bench at St George till his retirement.
Always loved Gordy. I never thought he was gonna win the game for us. But whether he was playing for Brisbane, Queensland or Australia. I always knew no one would dare lay an illegal hit on Alfie langer or Kevin walters or Darren Lockyer or Andrew johns or Brad Fittler, and if they were safe to play the game I knew my team would win. Guarantee Richard vilicantie doesn’t try and take out Brad Fittler in the 02 grand final, if Tallis is a rooster.
Sportsmen/athletes yes….human beings not sold on that there are thousands that have and do serve in war zones that far outshine anything a sportsman could ever do on the human scale, I think we get carried away with the positioning of our sporting icons/hero’s imho.

Tallis and Fitler were instrumental in preventing England/GB having any success on a number of occasions. Seemed to dominate as I recall.

Really enjoyed that story! Gordon gave the game some great moments of the rough no nonsense approach to Rugby League. We need more of it
