  • Popping noise is coming through air intake manifold.
    Edited on the 13th Jan 2022
    On the 5th cylinder, one in the pair of exhaust valve's hydraulic lifter socket has been sheared off. Therefore one exhaust valve is stuck closed, so pressure is backfiring through intake valve, letting the noise through intake manifold. The solution is to replace the block head.
    Thank you

    Currently sorting this issue. Thought nothing of it at first. Did 6000 miles in 3 weeks for work. One day I went to other side of town and major mechanical noise started. After buying an injector puller I managed to get cam cover off. number 5 tappet casting failure. Wrecked exhaust cam too. Started fixing after finally got correct head. Spent £1800 on just parts. Head, new timing belt kit and waterpump. Headgasket set and head bolts. New swirl flaps. 2 injectors second hand but lower miles. Can code in myself if needed. Bought a proper timing tool set. Big job but worth doing.
    This noise gets called "tugboat noise". Some say timing issue cause it. Some say broken swirl flap debris cause it. Also seen some say the 0w/30 oil can be too thin for worn lifters and cause it to happen faster. Either way it's nasty. Check for this noise if buying any Volvo with a D5 engine

    While shooting this video- was the engine cold or warm/operating temperature? Sounds like it's already warm.
    But very interesting. I think I have heard similar, but not so severe, popping sound "backing up" through the intake to the air filter box. Fortunately, I have that lifter/rockers job on the list already.

  • @garagereports
    @garagereports ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, the 5th cylinder part is interesting. Could it be related to the fact that oil reaches there last through oil galleries- making it have the least oil pressure?

    I have the same on my 2007 XC70 P3 with 325000 km. Investigations have found that they are loosely/faulty swirl flaps with combination of faulty/loosely EGR valve. It means valve cover and injectors out..

      Hi. It wasn't the EGR valve. Its a broken hydraulic lifter. One of two exhaust valves is stuck closed so the pressure is escaping through inlet valve making the noise

      Aged D5s having this noise as a common problem. For me I have to replace the head block as lifter holder (hole) is sheared off

    My wifes xc70 d5 2.4diesel 2006, 320k km has same sound when cold. she tell me that this sound is only when car is cold and heating. when is heated little then sound is gone. So, if i understand, i need to investigate egr valve and intake manifold plastic flaps?

    • @MrZakmuh
      @MrZakmuh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Martin. Ive got to bottom of the issue. In mine its broken rocker arm which is not opening one of the exhaust valves. So half of exhaust pressure is backfiring through inlet valve giving this noise. So check all the lifters and rocker arms. I'll upload a new video with the solution soon. Cheers

    • @MrZakmuh
      @MrZakmuh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that. You need to open up the intake manifold on the top of the engine and check each rocker arm and lifters. I suspect one of them is broken

  • @Adam19832

    This video is wrong, the popping noise is just vacuum leak, because if it was internal part of engine the noise will rise up when accelerating

    • @MrZakmuh
      @MrZakmuh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      NO mate, in mine its the broken hydraulic lifter causing a failed rocker arm - one of the 2 exchaust valve is stuck closed hence b pressure is escaping through inlet valve
