Hilton juggles two full-time jobs, and returns home at night to the one-car garage he calls home in the heart of Silicon Valley. Jose and Elizabeth try to qualify for a mortgage, Emilia reveals a troubling part of her past, and DJ and Takita try to start over in a new neighbourhood.
Hard Earned is a documentary series that puts aside economic debates and follows five families around the country to find out what it takes to get by on $8, $10 or $15 an hour. The series turns an intimate lens on this group of 21st century American dreamers as they fight against all odds to thrive when it takes everything they have to simply survive. Characters represent geographically and ethnically diverse multigenerational Americans.

I was born and raised in eastern Kentucky in Appalachia. It's one of the poorest regions in America. There are places you can move to and make a decent living in the United States. A lot of your success depends on personal choices.

@@rip_cayde6247 She's doing unpaid work now, cooking for and cleaning after the BF and her brother that are living in the shed. She'll be even more busy as a first time Mom with twins. She'll be seen as lazy because Mother/ housewife work isn't considered "real" work in the USA. Since she has no work experience, if he leaves her, she's screwed. She'd be a charity case and would have to go to court to prove paternity since he hasn't married her.
They look smarter then other people that I known but at end they are dummer, why having kids while you can’t even know how to survive without struggling. Get a trade or a skill if you can’t afford a degree

Hilton is a legend. 20 years old working 2 jobs/80 hours a week, twins on the way, coming straight from Mexico with only the clothes on his back. All to take care of his family. I hope to see this man win. all while sending the little money he has to his mom who abandoned him.

Honestly, things won't get better for him. I am seriously contemplating to move out next year because the cost of living got simply impossible to sustain. Jobs keep paying the same as 10 years ago in this state. People say to live within your means. Even living outside of the city is now expensive. My car is paid off. I don't eat out, go out, and my groceries are very cheap and I buy very small amounts. I don't go shopping. I get paid well and my kids are grown. I still struggle. I feel so bad for parents of little children.

everyone was against me going to college, they were telling me im too old because I was 24 and it was the graduation age, everyone told me just get a job any job with high school degree, I refused, I went to every college and applied, it was tough it was rough to get accepted without a job and then studying for 4 years and now im 28 graduating this semester and work part time hopefully ill get a better full time job after this semester and my GPA will allow me to pursue masters degree which is in my future plan...
am so thankful I was stubborn and didnt listen to anyone im so glad for once in my life I made the right choice and picked up on what I was missing and now I feel so proud

Unconstitutional laws and regulations as if Covid didn’t hurt the world enough. War and let’s make everyone suffer more. Not taking nothing for granted just wondering why cost of living keeps going up except people’s wages.
It makes me appreciate my career AND it makes me angry that this is SO common in the richest country in the world. Our ridiculously low minimum wage is a major problem. It has lagged behind cost of living for decades.

That's what I do at my house, we can afford cable but I would rather have savings and not have to constantly be stressed!
Most companies charge $110 for internet and an extra $20 for cable. Because they snakes.

When you're living in a garage (because you can't afford a house) and working TWO full-time jobs, it's absolutely LUDICROUS to start creating a family!

True. A major repair (roof, plumbing, heater) can set people back and even start them on a spiral they don't recover from. It's scary when you're living close to the bone financially.

As someone trying to survive as well, I will say, I have a 12yr old phone, I drive a 25 yr old car, I have no CC debt, my clothes, and shoes, at at least 10 years old, I have no retirement fund. I had to make major adjustments to my life style, I don't eat out, I don't entertain, or go out. I count my pennies, I eat 2xs a day, I drink only water. I use candles when necessary, there are hundreds of things I have to do. You have to change your priorities. I'm still considered wealthy in most countries.
So how come you are doing all that and still no retirement fund? Isn't the point of living below your means so that you can save excess for a rainy day? Most people will not be happy to live on bare bones and still not be able to save anything.
@@tessy28 Weeellll, the unexpected happened at age 54, I was injured at work, and I am now disabled, struggling to survive on Social Security. You never expect life changing events to occur, but they do, I can't work, nore will anyone hire me. Make hay while the sun shines, it's the truest statement in life. I wish I had.

My mom worked through all 4 pregnancies and she did whatever she could to save. I remember as a little girl cutting coupons for her. My dad was also working crazy hours and traveling far to commute to and from work. They even started a side gig that brought in extra income. That hard work was instilled in all of us and I'm thankful. My dad (he's retired now)got a new job and my mom was able to be a stay at home mom which many ppl don't have the luxury of. She eventually went back to work but honestly we're very blessed things went the way it did. My parents never lived above their means but always made sure we had what we needed.

Yup, I love this. Thank you for sharing. This show shows that people are often poor because of poor life choices. It doesn’t give me much empathy. My parents worked a ton and didn’t live above their means, literally. I just see people with lazy excuses that keep ‘em poor.

@@tigerking226 No, people are poor because we live in a system that needs the existence of poverty to survive. No one should be paid such low wages for such hard work. Wealthy board members and shareholders have their wealth because of the people working for next to nothing.
This one hits home. I know the struggle. Moving back in with my parents as an adult after my ex and I split up, working two jobs, not even having time to spend with my kids, not even time to do homework, having to drag my younger one around working door dash after work/school. It’s tough. I feel like I’ve aged 10 years in the past 2. It’s hard to feel like there is a way out. I really don’t understand how people do it these days. I am beyond blessed to have family to lean on, but it’s still hard.

They should never have taken the trades out of the schools, they should have increased them. With a poor education and no skills you are doomed to low wage work and incessant struggle.

@@quaithom3138 that's not true. There are plenty state and federal programs. People assume what they don't know. There are a lot of states that offer free tuition. My state offers two years of free tuition for adults for any state college or tech college.

I'm 35 and just found out that my entire life savings wont even buy a piece of land the size of a front garden anywhere within 80 miles in any direction of any standard. Apparently I need 30k more for my options to go from zero to maybe 1 if nobody else puts in another offer...and the costs are going up quicker than its possible to save.
I know people all over Europe and asia and every nations in the same boat. Existence itself is becoming unaffordable.

Yeah, I bought a fixer upper in decent (but dated) condition about 25 years ago. It cost less than $40K which is about what my annual salary was at the time. Now that same house in similar condition would cost $200k - 250K because the neighborhood has blown UP. But salaries have certainly not quintupled in that time, right?

As a Mexican American I’m incredibly grateful for my parents support and for them migrating here from Mexico at a young age. This video made me realize how hard some people have it and motivates me to work hard to achieve the American dream and be the first financially successful person in my bloodline. 🇺🇸🇲🇽

One day my friend was sitting in her car at a TAco Bell drive thru somewhere in Oregon and her window cracked and she looked down and there was blood everywhere. A stray bullet went through driver window then her left shoulder missing her spine and out her right shoulder. She drove her self to hospital and later started a go fund me to cover the medical expenses. She is suddenly in hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt for a unforseen event she had no control of.
People should not have to live like this while their Congress allows 2 trillion of tax payer money to be syphoned into a 20 yr war that was pointless and achieved nothing but arming the enemy and leaving them in a better position than if America hadnt of invaded Afghanistan. Americans unite against the corruption and come together.

When you look at the price of daycare for an infant and the price of daycare for toddlers you really need to have at least $20,000 in the bank just to cover the first two years of daycare in case you start working and get laid off and still need daycare to look for another job Etc

Emilia should be proud that she got sober. And she looks prettier now than she did when she was younger.
My parents came to the US not knowing a word of English, with much money and with two kids in tow. Yet, they worked hard, bought an apartment and always had food on the table. We never had much of material things like toys or "nice" stuff, but we were always loved and cared for. I had the best childhood. I didn't have toys but I got to be outside and be with friends. My parents never bought anything they couldn't pay in cash with. My dad didn't have a credit card until his 60s, and even then, he rarely used it. My mom died when I was 13 and my dad raised two girls on a very slim income. He never spend money on unnecessary things. We had the basics, food, shelter and love. That was more than enough to have a good life.

You can’t buy an apartment. Also, you’re talking about a time period when cost of living was reasonable. Even this documentary isn’t relevant to today because it’s 10 yrs old.
My parents were immigrants. Bought a home 6 years after moving to the US in the ‘80s. Totally different life and economy back then. College educated individuals today can’t even afford homes. There’s a combination of factors that are stacked up against people today so it’s much more complicated than we think.
I’m watching this documentary now. One thing that is obvious is that some of our life choices can influence how easy or difficult it will be to climb out of these situations.

I saw myself going down the wrong financial road in 2008 after a divorce and a move to the West Coast. Struggled for about 4 years with low income, taxes owed and behind on child support. After the end of a rebound marriage in 2012, a friend called me to return back to the oilfield. From that point I got intentional. I got square on my debts, taxes and child support. I ended back in trucking after a year in 2013 and lived very frugally on the truck. I took a trip in 2014 to the Philippines and decided I would retire there eventually. In 10 years, I saved a decent amount of money, bought and paid off a home in the Philippines, bought my dream Harley and paid off my pickup in 1.5 years. All of this on a very average trucker pay. I retired at 62, spent a year in Texas with family and then moved to the Philippines. If I can do it, anyone can. I had to sacrifice the good times by being in trucking, missing out on a lot, but now I'm on my own time. This video reinforced it for me that there was no American dream for me, I had to move to find my dream...

Glad you found a home in the Philippines. Beware of gold diggers. In the US you will get divorced graped, in the Philippines the woman's entire extended family will bleed you dry if you let them. Just be extra careful and always be mindful.
Sadly, moving away puts you away from family & friends. It's sad that you had to move in order to survive.
I see a lot of people worried about how I wanted to make a family when I wasn't stable and how many bad decisions I was making then. That's what it was, just bad decisions, back then. After 10 years, now February 2023, my life made a tremendous change. I do have 5 kids, I have a great job with great benefits, I got my GED back in February 2022 and I was even able to learn the language. I am now going to college in San Diego, and I am able to provide to my family, by myself. Not that I am machista or anything, I just didn't have the opportunity to see my mom and/or dad pretty much all day, I had to go to school by myself and take care of my younger brother back in Mexico. So, I don't want the same for my kids, that's why I work so hard. I make more than 3 times the minimum wage in San Diego, and I don't have to work 80+ hours a week. I can prove a lot of people wrong, if you want to succeed, you can, you just have to WORK HARD.

@@marcelgowa I worked with some people from Germany and they are some of the most hardworking people that I have ever met. After working with them, I didn't want to work with anyone else and I agree -- many Americans are spoiled and entitled.

Whatever is going on with the outrageous rent hikes nationwide is very suspicious. How can so many people afford rent that is now $1600-2300 a month, nationwide? It just seems that something else is at play here and it's so damaging to people who work. No one should have to go homeless when they are willing and able to work.

The house down the street was sold at auction and they tripled the rent so the existing tenant had to move. I own my home on the same street and believe it is not worth what they are charging.
I am 38F and I am glad I opted out of marriage and children (not hard for me, I am childfree). Whatever life throws at me, at least I am only responsible for myself.
People need to adopt stray animals and stop having so many damn kids.

When I started graduated from university in 2017-2018 I have been working like mad man for the last 5 years. When I graduated from university I was 51k in debt. Fast forward 5 years and I have saved 60k. In another two years I will have 100k. I keep grinding and hustling because I don't ever want to be in situation like these hard working people. I have been working two jobs over the last 4 years. And I commute using transit to work. I don't have a car so I can save more money.

I'm in my late 30s and the best choice I made was not to have kids as I'm always working with only a high school education, no debt and no criminal record and i can tell you that if you work hard, invest a little often and don't spend money on things you don't need the dream is closer than can imagine

You said a mouthful and nothing but the truth. I like to look for solutions and I also look at what did I do to contribute to my situation in a negative way. I had 3 children outside of marriage and that is NOT OK, but I put everything in my life on hold (pretty much) to raise my sons, and it wasn't easy, but my precious children didn't ask to be here. I work hard, multiple jobs at times and have learned to live on less and try to save, save and save some more. Listen to people like Dave Ramsey who gives really good advice on how to get out of debt and to make your money work for you.

Their First big mistake was getting pregnant waaaayyyyyy toooooo early in life. The youth need to understand that they should not have children until they have a stable career and home to raise a family, not when you are living in a garage! This is a big reason why I want to get into education, so that I can mentor young people. I had my first child at 37 because I knew that I had to set myself up to be a good provider for my children. Bad moves early on will cost you for more than money.
Often the same people who have kids young are the ones without the education/family planning resources to make an educated decision unfortunately. I don't think we should judge them for that

I raised my kids in a cabin outside of town. Wood for heat, chickens for eggs, even goats. Their mom was from Mexico and said it was similar. We couldn't afford more with my wages and we had many kids to take care of. I was a police officer, worked 6 days a week and on call most nights as we didn't have a designated night shift. This was in small town USA but really was similar to homes we visited in Mexico. Looking back we all enjoyed that cabin and had fond memories there. We baked our own pizzas, cakes, pies from the neighbors apple trees. You don't need a fancy house to create fond memories.

We have housing first as policy, so homelessness isn't the big issue like it is the US.

I grew up poor with uneducated working class parents. We struggled. However I knew bringing a child into the world before I had a good job and a home was the worst possible idea. I did EVERYTHING to avoid it including abstinence. It worked for me so why are so many poor people getting pregnant? It’s not lack of education because we all know sex results in pregnancy. -edit- I should add that my husband and I agreed to have one child only because that’s what we could afford. Our son is now grown and has a good life. We paid for his education and we were able to help him move into his first home. We did all that on basic education but determination to succeed. It doesn’t take high education or wealth.

Of all my friends recently graduated with STEM degree, they are the most unemployed or recently laid off in the past weeks. Student debt is over 100k with Masters. Home cost is way higher than before, especially in California.

Hey, in Commieformia those kids will get free healthcare/dental, free food, free place to live, etc. We need to make it more reinforcing to make the right choice than the wrong choice. As a taxpayer, I'm sick of working and paying for others' financial irresponsibility! Heck I don't want to work either but I do work and scrimp. I eat cheapest food, own very little clothing/shoes, buy nothing disposable, wear no makeup, cut my own hair, etc. I save $250/year using a $40 water sprayer instead of toilet paper, washable rags cut from old tshirts to blow my nose, thrift store cloth napkins, etc. This is how I got enough money to buy a place. I also lived with roommates for years. Just saying if people are poor in the USA it is because of their behavior. Being a money saver is the only way to withstand life crisis like cancer, old age, etc. I didn't have children because on a teacher salary can't afford it. When I retire from teaching, I will have foster children. There is a way to have most things in life-- just have to be patient and find a way.

The veteran needs to look into his VA benefits. At a minimum he can get a VA loan for the house he wants which has much better terms and he would definitely qualify for. He’s probably also eligible for disability payments if he applies.

@@firecrystal13 VA mortgage loans are the toughest inspections to pass. Homes must be move in ready, no safety issues, no repairs needed. It has to be decent. I know I'm buying my 2nd VA home now. Selling the one I'm in. The VA also will not fund a person more than 30% of his income on the monthly mortgage payment with taxes. So the veteran is not overextended financially. He definitely needs to look into VA loan. No money down. 1 point lower in intrest and he can assume another vets home loan at the lower intrest rate.

Society only functions if everyone can live comfortably by doing what’s necessary. For instance there are a lot of low paying jobs involved in getting people fed- growing food, harvesting it, transporting it, stocking and selling it in grocery stores… if all of those people switched to coding, we’d starve. Don’t tell people to change jobs if they’re not interested in the field you suggest, tell them to unionize or tell the government to raise the minimum wage.

We bought a house before we had our son. And my husband had a really good job. He didn’t have a degree, but the training he got in the Air Force translated to good jobs in the private sector. I was able to work part time or, at times, not at all, while our son was growing up. And we had our son when we were both 30 yrs old. My son, dil, and 4 grandkids are currently living in a camper to save money for a house. His job allows him to work remote so he’s back there in the office/toy hauler space. They will probably start looking to buy something in the spring.

This was sad to watch. So many of their struggles are from poor choices, some of those choices started with their parents. I grew up thinking that my parents were strict because they wouldn't let me stay out late or go to house parties like other kids but I see now just how you become like the people you spend the most time with. I wish people understood that poverty is almost guaranteed if you #1. don't graduate high school, #2. have kids out of wedlock #3. don't read self help, biographies, goal setting or financial books and #4 hang out with people that aren't going anywhere in life and #5. eat out a lot when you already live paycheck to paycheck..

Not really. Having children out of wedlock doesn’t have anything to do with wealth - it’s having children when you have no money that is the problem.
An upper middle class professional woman is far more suitable to have a child on her on than two people with poverty level wages. Marriage is a legally binding contract endowed by the government. That is literally it. A contract is not going to save you when you when you have mouths to feed on a 20k salary.
@@triggered577 the amount of money matters much less than having a single parent. Money opportunities are everywhere and a child brought up in a stable 2 parent household will always out do a child brought up in a single parent situation. It's not meant to be rude but it is true. Did you grow up in a single family situation?
@triggered577 But it is. Having children out of wedlock puts a burden on the single parent especially if the partner is not involved. A child is more stable if the care is divided by both parents.

I am in tears! I too was the working poor! I fell for the if you work hard you can have anything! I can literally feel their pain the bus ride s the cold! But my saving grace was my aunt ALWAYS there for me! Without her me and my son would not have made it! I miss her so much RIP

@@jeff200614 It's over $2k to send a child to daycare in CA while she works for less than minimum wage. With two kids, she'd have debt greater than twice her salary, if she could even get full time. Her combined income with her partner may push her out of a certain tax bracket and healthcare, but if she doesn't work, her healthcare is free and she gets EBT. It pays more to do "nothing."

@DayDreamer I've noticed a difference with my friends because some of them have inherited a lot of money and some of them married rich people and I stayed average and I don't tell them what my real day-to-day life is like they don't know and if they did know I would lose out on social opportunities I would not lose their friendship I would just miss out on social opportunities because I can't afford it

My parents neighbors are Mexican, they have had family and friends move in, they are from Mexico and have no immigration cards. It’s a 3 bedroom home and there are 14 people living in that home. They’ve turned the garage into an apartment. Twin special need boys sleep on the couch. They all work, but have put their money towards very nice brand new cars(6). Not sure why they don’t put in towards a bigger house or rent their own homes.

The problem is that they need to find a new job and learn a new skill. Staying in the same place for decades is not going to help any with a low skill job.
I agree especially the waitress shes done it for so long and that's a field where money is always a slippery slope she was paying dues or some thing still which were related to her construction Job yrs prior so I didn't understand why she didn't reach out to the trades organization etc...and see if they had work .Why continue to pay into a union that you're no longer working in as well as why not use their resources since you're paying monthly any way
I'm from a developing country & situation has always been bad here, people have to fight a lot for jobs & pay is very less. You can not buy a home in this economy for sure.
I have had the same sort of trouble when my family left California. We were the only Latino family in the whole town and people would look at us funny as we walked by. I lost a lot even more then I know at the time, even Spanish was all but gone for years. It has taken more than 20 years to get on my feet and I am thinking it maybe time to start that long road back home. I don't blame my mom and dad for wanting to give us a better life sometimes things just don't work out the way people plan.
I applaud the young man Hilton for not making excuses and working two jobs to make it. However, they’re living in one of the most expensive areas in the country. Should’ve moved to much cheaper areas in California like Sacramento or Riverside. Also, why is he sending money to his mom each month when she kicked him out of the house? Nonsense!
Because he sees himself as the good son/provider and he wants the girl to stay home and be a housewife! That shed's a STEAL for $300, in that part of the country, even without utilities.Assuming he makes 7.50 (minimum at the time) at his other job, and $11.00 at his main job, that's still around $2,000 a month take home, not even counting what the brother in law (that they said lives there) makes! They should stay there until they have a down payment for a little house.
Unfortunately In coming years I think people will have to look at if having kids is a viable option for their situation.
True, that’s happening in East Asia. Young professionals don’t want to get married and have kids because of the high cost. Living and education cost became so expensive, they have to give up raise a family.
It dropped the birth rate to 0.75 per woman which causes worries to these countries future.

I can totally relate to Jose. After I came home from OEF one of the first things I noticed were the signs "We Support Our Troops" .... pfft yeah until you tried to get a job with them. Once I started leaving "military experience" off my resume, that's when my luck changed

Hilton Kennedy is being sued for not paying child support for his twins. He's now married to someone else with 3 more kids who he only validates as being his only kids. I hope Diana & the courts push this man to step up!
