Making Mushroom Spawn The Easy Way - Preparing Grain Spawn for the Autoclave

  • This is the method I use to make my own mushroom grain spawn. This results in less contamination and a clean easy to use spawn. It only covers up to the point where it goes into the pressure cooker.
    My pressure cooker only got to 7psi, so therefore I must sterilise for longer. I clean my grain and it results in less contamination which means I can autoclave for less time. At the moment I autoclave for 4 hours at 7psi. My pressure cooker also vents a lot of steam, so I need to use excess water for my grain. a lot of this water get steamed off the grain after the 4 hour process.
    Each bag has;
    1kg dry grain, which is then rinsed with water, and weights 1.15kg after.
    500ml water is then added with the grain in the bag, and it is autoclaved.
    You can vary the amount of water to suit the grain you are using. I find 500ml works well for me.
    If you are using a better pressure cooker that gets up to 15 psi, USE LESS WATER!

    You could add a little hydrated lime to bring up the ph and act as a buffer to contaminates. My method is to rinse my grain in a homemade stainer, hydrate for 24 hours, then drain it and then dump a pot of boiling water over the grain, toss it and let it sit for 24 hours to steam off. Then bag and pressure cook for 2 hours.

      That's good idea. I haven't used hydrated lime much as I don't sterilize with it, but might give it a go!

      Interesting method. 24 hours to steam off sounds a bit overkill time wise, no? Seems like you could bag it up after a few hours?

      @@gabgerrard2045 no the steam dissapates in a few hours. The 24 hrs is to let the grain dry to the touch but is still fully hydrated. And i switched to just hydrating for 24 hrs and let drain for two hours, then bag and pressure cook for 2-2 1/2 hours.

    Appreciate all the videos. Had a question about how much grain you use per 12 lb bag? I have seem some wildly low numbers and I am beginning to think I may be using way to much.

      Go 1kg - 500ml water, I find it's a better mix. I use unicorn 14a or 3t bags.

    The grains look very wet still. Grains get contaminated if too wet and fail to spawn. that's been my experience.

    Greetings from Morocco! I have the same pressure cooker and I'm wondering if 2h30min was a guarantee if giving you sterile grains? I've been Tyndallizing my jars for 1h30min every 24 hours and I'm dealing with a 50% contam rate. I would appreciate any advice you could spare.

    Amateurly speaking, I tried boiling wood pellets from Kingsford. It soaked up the water, puffed up and turned into a sort of mushy mulch like matter. Garbage.

    I'm sure there's something I'm missing, but why do most people use a pressure cooker or autoclave to sterilize grain but then use larger steam sterilizers to sterilize substrate? Can you not sterilize grain properly in a steam sterilizer like you have for your substrate?

    You can put your spawn in your steam sterilzer, you just have to preseal the bags.
