Everyone should be required to work retail or service industry at least once in their life so they know what it feels to get yelled at and maybe think twice before doing the same to another person.
Totally agree. Husband and I required the same work of both our son and daughter: son worked one summer as car valet for fancy hotel, and lifeguard another summer. Daughter worked summers as food service waitress-and was so happy to get back to college. Both now adults with great respect for all working folks-regardless of job ( nurses, babysitters, road workers, anyone).
You'll get two outcmes, unfortunately. I would hope most will learn better, some will learn how to be a "jerk" even worse.
By the time I got to college I’d already had a few jobs but when in college I got a part time job with Aspen Airways. Dealing with people tired after a long day traveling could be challenging especially if luggage was lost. I still remember trying to track luggage down with someone screaming in my ear when their luggage had just gone through multiple transfers over multiple flights over quite a distance.
I agree. If people had worked a service job, they would be more considerate. Good manners aren't being taught they way they once were taught. I remember as a child there were serious repercussions if you were not polite.
Yes! I'll never forget when I worked as one of those car dealer service reps, with a lady screaming at me for five solid uninterrupted minutes after we told her the car's engine needed to be replaced after she drove it for 40,000 miles without ever changing the oil or doing any other service.
From 3 boats down to 1....I'd be pissed too.
Lady said it: when customers get abusive, retention becomes an issue
That’s why perfection legislation is so critical. When people channel their frustration in the wrong direction in the wrong ways, they need to pay stiff fines. There is no reason for misunderstanding and frustration if you’re willing to see the truth.
I love the ferries but avoid them, especially during the summer. I've watched people disrespect them.
It just took me two hours to go 48-miles. No accidents, no blockages - just Seattle traffic. Every day, day in, day out.
And yet they are still building empty office buildings downtown and the light rail is too little, too late.
And people wonder why the stress is making people insane.
Say thanks to liberal immigration
@@atatterson6992 Say thanks to Republicans blocking infrastructure investment to give tax cuts to the rich. The BC ferries aren't vastly better because Canada is full of right wing people, it's because they pay what they have to.
To late?
Yeah, too late. You watch, unless someone plays with the stats (who would ever do that??) travel time from Lynnwood to downtown won't change after the Lynnwood station becomes operational.
The whole model of centralized businesses fed from the suburbs is essentially flawed. Look at the history of freeways; they actually increased traffic congestion while devastating local economies.
When the Seattle region falls it is going to fall hard.
You voted in the idiots running Seattle and western Washington state. You got what you asked first.
Most of this mess can be laid at governor JAY ENSLEE who fired over a third of the ferry workers for refusing to get Covid shots. Most of those job openings have still not been filled. Then Enslee demanded the new ferries under construction be ALL ELECTRIC, which has never been done and has delayed building for years while costs skyrocketed. I lived on Vashon for 2022 and it was nearly impossible to get on or off the island with ferry service basically cut in half. Things have barely improved since then, while Enslee fiddles.
The employees in question chose to not follow a job requirement, so their employment was terminated. If you decide you don't like safety gear required by your employer, and then refuse to wear it, you lose your job.
@@xx5zi Well said!
@@xx5zi And we all know the jab does NOT prevent one from getting covid NOR passing it on - not to mention that people could have just stayed in their cars with the windows rolled up to avoid exposure. Very interesting take on this. The only abuse I've encountered thus far are from the workers themselves. Some of them are just miserable human beings and hate their jobs, so it's not just about the hateful people who use the ferries.
I have not at all seem that. They're busy, yes. They don't have time for slow people or silly shenanigans, yes. Bit, they're usually incredibly kind if you are kind to them. So, idk, maybe your attitude isn't as cherry as you think it is?
After working in retail for ten years I couldn't take it anymore. The verbal abuse and toxicity from customers, especially while working for Kroger, made my mental health falter and I felt traumatized. It doesn't help that you're not getting good pay and are understaffed.

The issue is in Olympia. With inflation and increased fee's, the state is taking in more tax revenue than ever, but providing the WORST essential logistical services of all time. Look up every state politicians donations and you will find construction companies on all of them. Then the state representatives tell us lies about cost of maintenance and repair of our logistical structure here. Meanwhile, there are abandoned WWII landing strips built in a matter of days that look in better shape than our roads and bridges. Unfortunately, the anger for this is being pointed at the people who do work hard and are doing their best with what the disingenuous politicians give them.
Spot on!
Incompetence on government
I dont live anywhere close to Washington, but I'll make some guesses, and you can tell me if I'm right. 1. The ferry is the only real option. 2. It's operated by the government or a ferry operator hired by the government. 3. The local news blames the customers for being mean (not cool) while ignoring the ferry operator, kinda acting like its PR firm. How close am I?
You pretty much nailed it. Democrat governor Jay Inslee has been in charge for 12 years. He's put the ferry service on the back burner because he is a radical GREENIE. This includes switching new ferry boat orders to EVs - something never done before and technology to this extent doesn't even exist yet, only ONE bidder to build the ferries. So there are no new ferries in service due to Inslee and none even on the horizon. Inslee laid off 1/3 of the ferry workers for refusing to take the shots, and has yet to replace them, so ferries are often cancelled for lack of crews. Most routes are running one ferry short most of the time, causing cancellations and huge delays. Inslee has been a disaster for Washington state and yet people keep voting Democrat, so I no longer have any sympathy for them.
@@Morrisfactorhey, don't blame the ones trying to change! Besides, the times are changing.

The ferry system is so antiquated, people have a right to be frustrated with zero information from the WSDOT app. The workers typically laugh at customers who want information because they don’t know either.
The question not addressed in this video is why are they down to one boat when they had three?
One of the boats had a bad engine, another one ran aground a year or two ago and needed repairs.
They DID say staff shortages.
They just gave 2 of them away to be scrapped in Mexico or something. BEFORE they had replacements. The big plan is ELECTRIC ferries. That's gonna burn hot.
Send Inslee to Norway to learn how a ferry system should work. I just came back from there and it works flawlessly. Some routes they run nonstop, one is coming in as you leave. There are longer routes where they run 24 ferries each way in 24 hours.
So riddle me this.... why is it that we are back to pre-covid traffic and the state has not move forward to support that timely? So was it just not part of the plan?
They just a couple of weeks ago went back to working at work. They had half the crew. "WORKING FROM HOME" the plague has been over for 2 years. And nothing they did actually prevented anything. The virus just ran its course. The only people that were in danger were metabolically unhealthy individuals who are at risk from damn near anything.
Be anger at Inslee, he's responsible for alot of this mess.
And 40 years since a Republican has been in office!
Washington voters have no one but themselves to blame. They will continue to vote blue no matter how bad it gets…
Yet these yohos will keep voting democrat no matter what!
if people are hostile to ferry workers , ticket them and ban them.

Fares and taxes support public transportation. It's a mammoth operation to fund and maintain. The fleet is aging.
If you don't want to support public transportation but want to use it and demand that it's always convenient for you-.not how it works...perhaps you should move somewhere else.
One thing in life I'll make sure I never do is treat people poorly for something they have nothing to do with. So many people have failed this.
No excuse for bad behavior. If they close their mouths and watch, they will see how things are done. Want to know, be nice and ask if need be.
We do our part and show up on time we expect the same in return. It's taking me over 2 hours to get home every night from work. And at 70 time is my most valuable asset!

1)The worker pointed out that the ferry system is still on Covid Time. Why?
2) The supervisor pointed out that employees are not present - for whatever reason. Why?
Both of those are valid reasons for this mess, and are not in the realm of passenger responsibility, but in State Management.
Correlary reasons are:
A) The massive growth of population in the entire Puget Sound Region - without the commensurate spread of job opportunities in the suburbs. Taco Bells and strip malls won't do it.
B) Amercan cities continue to follow the increasingly poor practice of encouraging bedroom communities long distances from where the people actually work.
C) Mass transit is decades behind the need, and billions over-priced. When ever it is finished, light rail is projected to move only 3% of the expected increase in population. Theyaren't even here yuet, and it'll already be not enough to make a difference, but your taxes for such Public Jobs Programs will still go up - permamently.
D) Painting little Green lines for bicycles is a joke. Another tax funded initiative for less than 1.5% of commuters.
I could flesh out the entire alphabet with other correllary reasons that peole are going nuts, but I don't blame them.
Too bad for the ferry workers. If you cry babies want to complain about someone getting mad in a line, try going to the Ports and watching what happens to those truckers, who are there to bring you your crying towels. Three hours is very normal to what, often five hours - in a truck that likely has broken A/C.
The ferry system is a joke, need more ferries, better upkeep. The employees are doing their best but the management needs to be held to account.

Can someone tell me why the term “passenger seller” is used? Shouldn’t it be “ticket seller” or “cashier”? I’m from the West Coast but not that far north and have never heard that title used before.
Lived in PNW all my life, used to refer to them as ticket seller or similar. Like when I was a kid we called the garbage man the garbage man then they retitled them as a "sanitation engineer". My dad was a truck driver he was retitled "transportation engineer". None of these came with a wage increase, fluffy BS titles don't pay the bills.
Perhaps the state shouldn't have terminated anyone who didn't get vaccinated. While the anger directed toward the staff is not justified or excusable, it is a direct result of the mismanagement of the State and those the angry riders elected into office. Lack of boats and staff are nothing short of the consequences of the people in office.

I take the ferry all the time for work. One day I showed up to the ticket booth after work and noticed an unusually insane number of people waiting. Needless to say it took me a lot longer to get home than I thought. What did I say to the employees? I calmly stated that this is my first summer taking the ferry daily and then asked if it’s typically this busy this time of year. The person I asked said ‘yes unfortunately,’ and I adjusted my expectations and perception of the situation accordingly. I don’t understand why I see people twice my age acting a fraction of my age in public. Shit, the other day I saw a lady drive thru a bunch of cones and drag one under her car as she sped off bc she missed the ferry and yelled at the employees for it before making a bigger scene w/ the cones as she drove away. So uncivilized.
