I would argue it was clear to Sac that he called specifically to tell about the joke, it was more like a formality from Paulie’s part. Hence I would disagree it applies here
I feel like paulie was good at that he knows he can’t just call someone out for whatever he did cause not only would that make him look like a rat but he’d also be starting a beef with whoever he’s throwing under the bus. He’d bring something up then act dumb like oh u didn’t already know that or oops was I not supposed to talk about that and then when someone asks him for the full story he’s always like “na forget I said anything, or don’t worry about it it’s nothing” knowing that they’re not gonna stop till he tells them about it.
This reminds me of the film Death of Stalin where Steve Buscemi's Khrushchev managed to survive through Stalin's regime by acting non threatening as well as having the ability to make Stalin laugh. In fact even after Stalin dies, and it looked like his rival Beria was going to succeed him. Khrushchev continued to play the role of the court jester and friendly bureaucrat so well that the power hungry and ruthless Beria didn't even perceive him as a threat. Even while he was actively plotting against him, Beria just assumed Khrushchev's clownish persona made him terrible at scheming, while in actuality Khrushchev was able to win the other ministers of the Politburo over to his side and orchestrated events to make Beria look far worse before springing his trap and taking him out.
kudos to you b whispers for keeping the quality so consistently great on such a specific topic, you breath new life into this show. i love this series.
Speaking of little Carmine, we can refer to Law 41. It is quite possible that little Carmine was perceived as stupid only because he was compared to his genius father since childhood, with the obvious result. This could also have been a potential reason for little Carmine to choose the strategy of pretending to be stupid. Not so much an elaborate plan, but rather a result of childhood trauma
Growing up in the mob he probably wasn't the sharpest tool in the toolbox. But after witnessing several people he had known since childhood being taken out under his father's orders for overstepping or being perceived as a threat. He decided it was his safest bet to play up his malapropism to avoid being a target.

It's interesting that Bobby was a genuinely likable character for the audience, but I wouldn't say he was liked by his fellow mobsters. They just liked having him around as the butt of their jokes, because he's such an easy target and most importantly can't verbally fight back (contrast him with Vito). As long as Bobby was in the room, everyone else was less likely to be made fun of or hassled.
Thank you for a great analysis. Lots to think about. Regardless of how stupid he was , I do admire Bobby for just ploughing on and ignoring the obvious distain his contemporaries held for him. On that basis, he's always welcome in my social club.
Another good one. I definitely use this rule to a degree. People value loyalty more than competency most of the time and I’ve learned you can get away with a lot as long as you’re punctual and polite.
If someone thinks you’re dumb they tend to let their guard down around u making it easier to analyze them and learn from them or about them. Also when someone thinks you’re dumb they tend to give u a little more leeway so when u come through for them they’ll be more grateful because u delivered more then they were expecting from u
@@anon_148 Just look at the bloated bureaucracies in all of the giant corporations. Yes it’s very ‘I Claudius’ (though in that admittedly it wasn’t so much to kill the tiger as to survive the reigns of several tigers). It’s another, good example of using an enemies weakness against them. In this case hubris.
He was a good earner and didn't have an ego. He also made sure he didn't step on anyone's toes by insulting them. And even when he was been treated like a punching bag, most of the time he was able to turn the other cheek and not hold a grudge, so everyone mostly left him alone.
The huge range of intelligence among the characters is something special about the Sopranos. I'd love to see a top 10 list of dumbest characters on the Sopranos, with an emphasis on the role their stupidity played in their interactions with other characters and their impact on the story.
I was actually thinking about adding one on to the end of this episode but it would have made it too long. It is a good idea for an episode though. Thanks for watching!
I don't think Little Carmine was a secret genius but I do believe he had as big if not bigger grudge for the killings of Lorraine, Angelo and most of all Rusty. Rusy was Carmine's de facto father figure. We know Tony and Phill had Rusty killed and Carmine has to know as well. So I think Carmine who was looking for revenge conspired with Butch who was tired of Phil's crap. And they both had no love for Tony.
Law 21 of the 48 Laws of Power, if you make other people feel smarter than you, by making yourself out to be naive or slow-witted by comparison, they'll let down their guard and fail to be suspicious of your motives.
I think Little Carmine has deficits that make him appear dumber than he actually is and causes people to underestimate him. I don't think he's playing dumb, he just has some ideosyncrasies that naturally disguise his actual intelligence.
Hey Bully, I know this doesn't count as playing dumb per se but what about being subservient or less intelligent? Real example: Joey Massino who was boss of the Bonnano's from 91 to 04, crawled his way to the tip by killing anyone who threatened his power (Cesare Bonventre and George from Canada) to name a few. And ones who survived and thrived either sucked up or pretended to be less intelligent what do you think?
I don't think Little Carmine was pretending to be dumb, but I think he was more astute than his terrible vocabulary and communication skills would suggest.
Hamilton showed why he's the G.O.A.T that was incredible pace while stretching those soft tyres and even backed off in the last stint....he had pace in hand!🏆
While i do love these videos i gotta ask. Why does every sopranos youtuber shoe horn in jokes and lines from the show? No offense but sometimes its very forceful, and doesnt work and its not really funny. Just gets old really fast
shouldn't Paulie calling Johnny Sack and pretend like he assumed that Johnny knew about the joke count as this?
Good call. Thanks for watching!

to be fair khrushchev didn't need to do a whole lot to make beria look bad.
I just discovered that movie. I'm going to watch it. Love Steve Buscemi ❤ Looks hilarious 😊😂

Love the South Park reference, also the whole series of rules of power is marvelous! Looking forward to the next episode!

Great videos keep it up
I never considered Bobby as "stupid" per say. He was street smart and loyal imo and these are the two qualities that took him as far as he went.
He was a good earner and didn't have an ego. He also made sure he didn't step on anyone's toes by insulting them. And even when he was been treated like a punching bag, most of the time he was able to turn the other cheek and not hold a grudge, so everyone mostly left him alone.

You've been working on this for 48 YEARS. I thought you would of been done with this.
I watch all your videos bro. They are made at a varsity level.
"Junior, if there's any flies on you they're paying rent"
Nice. Lil Carmine may have not been a super genius but he might have been aware everybody thought he was dumb and took advantage of it.
"Jesus mistuh, you okay in dere?!"
Little Carmine was very street smart & business savvy. There are several stopping points in between stupid, dumb & genius.

Aka the Columbo factor.
This law of power applies to Lt. Columbo.
Little Carmine says his malapropisms so confidently that it seems genuine. But you don't need to be that literate to read people.
