  • In this episode, we will evaluate law 16 of Robert Greenes 48 laws of power in the Sopranos by first taking a second to look at its impact on love as shown through the back and forth between Tony and Irina, before moving on to its impact from the viewers perspective as shown through Furio and the Russian from Pine Barrens, then ending with Tony, how he started down the right path, how the coma couldve been a big break for him and how his actual response shows what may be his biggest weakness as a gangster.

    I think the ultimate example of this is Livia Soprano played by Nancy Marchand. It's well documented that Marchand's unexpected and untimely death fundamentally changed the course of the series. If I could visit a parallel universe, it would be one where Nancy Marchand lived to play out her role in season 3. Or a universe where the dinosaurs didn't go extinct (real dinosaurs, not birds!).

      I believe David Chase intended for Livia to stand trial and testify against Tony, which would have opened up a whole RICO case against him. They had to switch things up also when the guy who played Feech started to display early symptoms of alzheimer's disease. Originally, he was going to be a rival for boss of NJ mafia, with Tony B having to choose sides between the old school Feech and his cousin.

    This was one of the shortest of the law videos but also one of the best. Great video. Tony never understood that as a boss, you can no longer shoot the shit and break balls with the crew everyday anymore. You never saw Carmine breaking balls with Joey Peeps about Carmella or discussing The Godfather with Coco. Not saying you have to be an asshole but you do have to establish rank as well. It's a fine line, sure, but the line is there. As a mob boss, you have to show that you won't be there for the bullshit and jokes but you will be there for the serious shit. Hell, we never even saw Carmine until the real estate scam shit started taking a nasty turn.

      Interesting take but not sure that’s what it is. That kind of cold-hearted calculating and the lack of an ability to empathize with the troops is almost what got Carmine whacked when Ginny got insulted. Tony was always closer to his crew, although never too close. His impulsiveness and inability to control his emotions is what cost him the most.

    • @Psychology
      @Psychology หลายเดือนก่อน

      @miloslukanovakovic4196 Empathizing is fine. Buy joking around and being friends is not. Doing so will result in the guys not taking you seriously when the time comes and talking to you in a disrespectful way in front of company. Think about it. We spend everyday breaking balls, talking about tits and ass, insulting each other's wives and girlfriends, etc but when you ask me to do something serious or you discipline me, suddenly I'm supposed to agree no questions asked and respect your decision?

    Great perspective on Furio and Valery as makers of impressions. The Russian is one of the most talked about characters who was so minor. I think he was only in one episode, "Pine Barrens"? Regardless, he wasn't up the tree. Chase made clear that it was written that his head wound didn't kill him. He went to the ER for lifesaving measures and then was sent back to Russia to further convalesce and retire. There were actually plans to have the character reappear in season six. The idea is that he would be at his boss' place sweeping the floor and, because of his brain surgery, he would not recognize Christopher because of his traumatic brain injury and the resulting surgery. How'd he make it out of the woods? Some Boy Scouts found him.
    There. That's what happened to the Russian. Anyway, good video. Just subscribed.

    Yeah, I actually gotta agree. He never really figured out the "in tune enough to keep a finger on the pulse but distant enough to stay more objective" thing that just came natural to the NY guys. Plus for a boss to be successful in that world they need to be totally respected by all and one big way that's accomplished is pullin back and keeping their exposure down so they're less available, seen, and interacted with, like a celebrity (nobody likes a stuck up goofball, but there's a happy middle), yet Tony is always far too concerned with acting like nothin has changed.
    The media often gets the whole role of mafia boss messed up, similarly to how Native American/Indigenous leaders, or "Chiefs", are always portrayed VERY inaccurately. Mafia management was set up in a hierarchical manner but it was done for efficiency and to keep that wing small and the rank and file huge to keep leadership accountable to the mass of the group, it was always more democratic than most media portrays for the most part - obviously exceptions apply. But it was necessary for a boss and even their appointed figures to have popular support (in many cases actually being voted in) or there are mechanisms they can use to remove em from position peacefully or by force. So boss is a very sensitive position that Tony only ever seemed to master for moments at a time before he fell back into his ways.
    Even when hostile takeovers are done it's still almost always cause the new boss has most of the men behind em otherwise it turns into a self-defeating project.

      "The media often gets the whole role of mafia boss messed up,"
      Not really. What you described is usually how movies and TV shows portray someone becoming boss. From The Sopranos to Scarface, the character that becomes boss is always shown gathering support from the rest of the organization before making their move.
