So I have felt extremely despondent after losing my only son in a violent motorcycle accident, and a succession of personal disasters all clustered within a short time frame. I had given up on religion and politics. I had no hope. I picked up Soul Boom, and it resonated with me deeply. Imagine, two incredibly gifted articulate and I believe kind, comedic actors saved my life. No hyperbole. Thank you so much. You really have no idea. I was days at most away from giving up.

    Wonderful interview.
I wish I was as articulate as you and Rainn but since I can't go there even after 70 years on the planet, I will say that I was lucky to have grown up in a family where I was taught that we were to leave the planet better than we found it. Many segments of America in the 60's and 70's were like this. My mother was not religious really but she wanted religion and discipline and believing in something outside ourselves, in lives, so we went to church on Sunday and then to the nursing home in our town to read newspapers to the residents. My mother wanted one of 3 professions for her kids, she thought being an artist, a teacher or healer were what was important.
So much today people are totally involved with finding their 19:15 own happiness. I can 't remember whose famous and so true words about how you can never find happiness by concentrating on your own happiness. If you concentrate on something or someone else's happiness, you will find happiness by the way, back to the paraphrase again. If you choose to believe in something good that is outside yourself I personally believe that God as is fundamental to the religions will put peace and purpose in your life.
Yeah, I know it will be hard to convince these young generations like millenials and gen zers that it is not all about them, but Russell this is where you and those likeminded with platforms that can reach come in.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I love hearing from people in your generation. There was naturally good morals even if you were involved in religion or not.
My mother was 63 when she died 6 years ago of dementia she was nearly the same age as you. I went to church as a child, we prayed every day, sang hyms every day in school as I went to a church of England school.
I was bought up to respect my elders, I had a healthy fear where I knew to be good. If I wasn't good I was disaplined.
I think today there is zero respect and if kids are disaplined they are talking online to other kids and accusing the parents of being narcissistic. It's so sad how they have no respect and messages are being taught to children to hate their parents.
Teachers are also being attacked in schools. It's absolutely insanity. They have no regards for there elders. They have been taught religion is bad. This is why it's so important to hear from your generation. Thank you so much again. ❤

there is a discourse that was read to the young people in Greece 2000 thousand ago in school it was about the new generations and their lack of values. It was read 2000 years later at a graduation. Later the truth about the discourse was disclosed, It seems just the thing older people do. I would say that idea that the older generations were better is just not true. Less than 200 years ago humans were burned for thinking differently or dancing under the moon. I can not agree on what you are saying. There is amazing people doing great work and they are young.

Love these two men and love this conversation. Like Rainn, I was born and raised in a Baha'i family and as I've gotten older I can see more and more the relevance and beauty of the Baha'i teachings. Spirituality can be both mystical and practical. It should transform individuals as well as society. Just to share an example: in the Baha'i community, members of its institutions are elected democratically, from the village to the global level. A few days ago, an international convention was held to elect the international governing body of the Baha'i Faith, which included thousands of delegates from hundreds of different countries and ethnic groups from all walks of life. It is a highly organised and efficient system but it is also dignified, beautiful and demonstrates the power of unity in diversity. A fascinating case study for the spiritual revolution that Russel talks about. It is possible.

Are "individualism", competition and aggression really so terrible as things in themselves? Is any aspect of the human character terrible as a thing in itself? This seems like a highly dubious claim in whatever context you try to test it. I find myself seriously questioning the wisdom of Rainn Wilson in many respects, everything he said which was substantive I'm quite certain someone like Emerson said very much more competently in the 1800s; people, I beg of all of you, if you're interested in these issues, there is much that has been said by 19th century philosophers which lacks the political parochialism of contemporary perspectives like Rainn's. Emerson, Dostoevsky, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche have already covered these subjects in a manner of fullness that scarcely a single person today, and certainly not Rainn Wilson, could ever hope to parallel; people like Rainn Wilson seem rather to misrepresent the depth of these fundamental subjects.

    • @GUMA34
      @GUMA34 ปีที่แล้ว

First of all when you icolate individualism, aggression and competition you get three words that have different meaning. The can have an effect on each other or by them self in contact with humans. If individualism and agression combine then that is a Combination that is suited with some aspects of life. But if a young adult with traumas from childhood has this combo when he interacts with other's in a society than that can have a negativ effect on one self and the one who meets his wratch or ego.
So icolated individualism is not bad because one should think about them self and take care of them self to walk through this game of life but the having a individualistic focus in contact with other people goes against human nature because we are social beings that effect each other. Consumerism and capitalism does not survive with individualism.
The perspectiv one has of what is wrong with individual or collective are based on one's moral belief. And that again is different for a beliving soul or an atheist.

Grew up as a Roman Catholic. Religion was at the center of my family's life. So much was gained from teachers on values and aspirational role models. I can't say anything bad about that. As a child contemplating all of the virtues they espoused was just goodness personified.

One Day/// I agree. My life is dedicated to the practice of meditation and prayer. But I'm not perfect.
Some say the master comes when the student is ready. Also raised as Roman Catholic, I took refuge there
till "one day" a higher science of spirituality was introduced in New Delhi, India. I kept my religion as a
good foundation of my faith. It does make us brave, and at times eccentric.

Also raised as Roman Catholic. After 27 years of my life finally met Jesus personally. Yoga was on my path as well. I remember feelings of ‘awakening’, even as I have practiced yoga only as a type of exercise and wellbeing. All until God have decided it’s time to open my real eyes and heart to acknowledge that Jesus is the only way, truth and life. And that I have to die to myself to truly be happy. That is hard, but with Jesus on your side nothing is impossible! And Jesus is on each one of our side! He is love and love never fails ❤

I love when Rainn mentions how when we stop at just our own inner peace (he used positive quotes, crystals, yoga as examples, not saying they’re bad in themselves) it’s narcissism. That really spoke to me and it’s such truth. I truly believe we are all connected and things won’t get better unless we start caring for one another so much more then we currently do.
I highly recommend the TH-cam video “Everything is spiritual” by Rob Bell. He goes through the science of the creation of the world and through science shows how we are truly all connected on a molecular level. It’s fascinating and inspiring.

Appreciate you, russell. Happy to hear that Rainn is well. The spiritualism in which i find myself most often enganged is on that searches for and engages with the unique essence of the world around me and those that inhabit this world. It is a very immediate and accessible practice that serves not only as a tool to learn about myself and others, but also offers comfort and rejuvenation from the elements in life that pull me from myself and encourage me to judge and separate from the outside world. Essentially, life offers an endless stream of momnets and interactions that sit in a potential for joy, growth, connection. I understand deeply how easy it is to be pulled from this connection, and my practice is to bring myself back. Love

There is a B'Hai temple just north of Chicago (which is where I grew up). My aunt (my dad's sister) came to visit us often. I took her to see the B'Hai temple (there is only 1 temple per continent), and she said,, "This is a religion devoted to beauty." It was not meant to be a compliment to the B'Hai faith. Her, point was that it was superficially focused, had no depth and no true human foundation. Which I think is true, and frankly, Rainn Wilson has, in this interview, cemented that for me.

Enjoyed your discussion with Rainn Wilson. Our political systems, so closely enmeshed with the needs of the super rich, have lost any spiritual direction, lost the need to work for the good of mankind or for a whole country's well being and become vehicles of greed for the less than 1% who's only urge is 'give me more'. I admire both of your searches for meaning in your lives because by actively seeking and demanding meaning, which is what life is really about, when you finally depart, you'll have meant something. You'll have added something to humanity, not taken it away, which is the present cul-de-sac that most politicians and many of their hapless followers have got themselves into.

That actually use their influence to provide meaning into peoples lives through more than what their known for. Personally, I was starting to worry all actors besides Russell were like politicians, CIA, FBI, Mark Zuckerberg, and etc. That type of stuff I want to stop and the only way we do that is with more meaningful and productive conversations like Russell says but possibly with less political influence. I like what Rainn is saying. We do need a change in society and fast.

      >everyone starts to hate Hollywood because they represent everything fallen and corrupt
      >They "rebrand" themselves as "independent" and free thinkers
      >You idiots fall for the bullshit yet again
      They. Are. All. Glowies.

Both you guys and the majority are a cruel joke failing to address the lives you're all now harming and ruining. Avoidable atrocities are happening today and nobody is figuring out how to stop them!!! - WHY???!!! Because the majority refuses to do no harm!!! Not even a small group of people refuse to do no harm!!!
Do no harm because the majority doesn't want to be harmed!!! Nobody chooses to exist, so respect this equality because defenceless children are still being created!!!

All the illnesses, pandemics that he speaks about come from what is left, when we cannot find our Creator, and the love that we were created to manifest, by seeing the divine in each other. Without the connection to the Creator and knowledge of the purpose for creation, all we have left is to compete with each other for power. That competition is leading us away from bother life and love. In seeking God, and knowing that our creator wants us to love one another, be happy in service, and share the goodness of spirit, we will chose life. Otherwise, our egos will compete and kill and this is what some call evil or satanic. We all can chose, and in the light of love, there is a lot less confusion than in this dark world of the many "pandemics". Thank you Russell for always promoting spiritual growth and complete transformation!

throughout history we have had industrial revolutions, revolutions to overthrow oppression but never have we ever had a spiritual revolution in all of known history... I think we would all like to see more.
