It's the questions of, "How can we take you seriously?" that irk me the most.
He's a human being. Every human being is capable of philosophical thought and insight. It doesn't require further explanation.
Bravo to Rainn for using his platform to share his wisdom. We could all learn something from every person's experience.

    • @michaelallen3195
      @michaelallen3195 ปีที่แล้ว

I understand when this question is asked, because when a person has a platform of fame, their words and actions have a broader impact.
There are lots of great reasons to listen to Rainn, but it's the same question as, "Why should there be ethical standards for what an athlete does off the field?" For better or for worse, people that have found success in certain fields are looked at as role models and influencers. While Rainn is a positive influence, if we shut down asking why anyone should listen to him, we lose the grounding to ask the same question of someone who may have a more questionable influence.

He didn't write it. The office is a Ricky Gervais concept and storyline. The British original version being infinitely better, and might I add Ricky is a confirmed staunch and passionate atheist .

    • @tmalloy9

@@happysufferer the UK office ran for a very limited run. It had a new angle, which was brought to the US. This iteration lasted a very long time. Mr. Gervais has done many many other things. Mr. Wilson has, too. His character, Dwight, is not Rainn Wilson. So this entire comment has neither connection nor context with what “The Office” became for its longtime fans.

    I love this episode.
I am a baby-boomer that sees the universe in the way that Rainn is speaking of in this episode.
In parallel to this, I have followed writings of Eckhart Tolle and Don Miguel Ruiz as a way of seeing a new spirituality, and I'll have to re-listen to this episode several time.
Thank you to Rainn for relating his life in the Baha’i Faith; very enlightening.

I appreciate Rainn Wilson's genuine effort on spirituality. I personally believe Jesus is the only way but Ive been saddened by the lack of life and creativity in some pockets of the Christian faith. I can't blame people who are turned off by the stuffy judgemental pockets of Christianity. However, there are amazing believers of Jesus who are full of life, creativity, and holy authenticity. I can't imagine living life without a relationship with Jesus. Ive experienced so many miracles and guidance to deny my need for Him. Ive been challenged to pick up my cross and forgive my enemies. Its a very wholistic experience that explores the depth of the soul as well as the life of the Spirit of Christ that dwells in all who confess Him as Lord and believe in their hearts that God raised Him from the dead.

Well that's certainly not the experience i've lived the past eight to nine years growing up in to an adult, since I was about 13 years old till now, and i'm almost 22. God doesn't even answer prayers for his own will to be done and for him to reveal his existence to the most passionate saints, like I once was. And i've seen it all, alright? Supposed signs and syncronicites, "miracles" even. My dad, my father, he currently is on a path where he believes the biblical god is speaking and communicating to him through mathematics, math, and he believes that since math is an objective reality and truth in our world- that gives these supposed messages proof and evidence of their validity. And he's been doing this for about 30 years now, a long time. However, numbers are abstract, no matter how beautiful and useful they are, and sadly none of it has convinced me at all growing up listening to what he has to say. And i've known the full lessage of the gospel and of salvation in jesus christ, I adopted fully the once saved always saved mentality, thinking that i'd always be loved and held in the hands of god eternally. So if there was a god and that was to be true, then I wouldn't be here saying this to you now, I would be with god as the bible promises. I'm sorry, to break it to you, but your god is either not real- or if he does exist- he's one of the most evil beings to ever have his name spoken of. I rebuke the spirit of god, I cut all ties and connections with this wicked eldritch horror god, in the name of eternal love and goodness! I blaspheme the "holy" spirit- not out of eternal hostility against a good loving creator- but in spite of an evil, wicked one- in the name of eternal love and goodness!! BEGONE!!! ♡

Love Rainn, and love the office so much.
The hunger or curiosity of us as humans for spiritual depth is so beautifully innate. It's woven into our being. No matter what part of this world you find yourself in or what worldview you fall back on, there's a desire somewhere for something not of the physical world at least in some capacity. What we satisfy that curiosity with can be so fundamental and crucial in not only our own lives, but the lives of those around us as well. There's often discussion on what religion or worldview is best or what the difference is in impact of accepting one belief system over another. If there was just one thing that could be mentioned to give guidance in that search, I've found this: most (specifically most) major world religions are founded upon or find focus on the necessities to pass on to heaven; what you have to do to get to God
Christianity, is what God did to get to YOU.

Worked with Rainn many years ago on Mimzy. I’m an atheist in recovery and have started a Secular Sobriety 12 step group to go along with many out there now. I tried for many years to play along in traditional AA and couldn’t stay sober. By abandoning the divine chase ive finally found peace and long term sobriety. Of course one day at a time. Good luck to us all.

The Twelve Steps require only something larger than you. I was raised by a mother in recovery. She, in her search for a Higher Power, did come to rest for a time in the Bahá’í Faith, though she left it after relapsing 10 years later and cobbled together a very useful concept of Morality/the Greater Good/Universal Consciousness, which allowed her to find her way back to sobriety.
The Godhead in the Bahá’í Faith is an Unknowable Essence, which is the source of all love, etc, which is why it was a fairly good fit for a time for her.
Be your best is all you can do, no matter your Universal Context.
Two of my very very dearest friends are also staunch atheists. I prefer them to a lot of theists. ❤

1:00:31 to 1:02:09 I'm so glad Rainn brought this up because just like his son, I was incredibly upset when the willow project was passed. As a young person, it's so disheartening when those who are supposed to be leaders, and older people we "have to look up to" and all that, are making decisions like this.

So helpful in relationships to have a shared language / framework for thinking about the things that are most impactful and largely invisible to the more acknowledged senses.

I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. We need a collaborative religion or collaboration between religions with guiding principles, basic structure, democratic process, and community building. I have deep appreciation for the Baháʼí Faith. As a convert Buddhist practitioner and a UU, I watch Unitarian Universalists operate democratically at a congregational level. They do send representatives to a central organization. Thus far, my experience has shown bottom up authority, AND I am watchful from the edge of the inside. I also want to share that Franciscan Friar, Father Richard Rohr, says that AA will go down in history as America's exceptional contribution to spiritual development and formation. Lastly, pilgrimage is a rite of passage. We all need that experience. Unlike Rainn's experience of returning to LA, in returning to the Carolina's from India, I saw all things as sacred. Thank you, both, for your commitment to bettering our predicament. I'm ready for the Spiritual Revolution.

What a wonderful interview and pertinent topic in today's world. We need to end partisan politics, including even speaking of our leaders on a personal level which just brings them the attention they need and crave to stay relevant. We need to stop attacking other humans entirely. The gossip and backbiting machine is destroying our unity.
We need also to recognize that, for every good or bad thing one can say about religion, the same can be said about science. They are two necessary sides of human endeavor that have much in common. While it is fashionable today to condemn religion for the "terrible things done in the name of God", we find it impossible to be honest about all the good things religion has done for humanity, including giving us a history book of humankind's cumulative mistakes and the wisdom and guidance that comes out of it, the communities that formed which have served humankind and given us comfort and a way to serve humanity and build great civilizations together under one common belief system, and the individuals who, like William Wilberforce and all his struggling counterparts in Christianity, sacrificed all to maintain their integrity of Christian Faith and strive to end legal human slavery everywhere in the world. If people of those days had given up on their religion, because of the "bad things" the Church had done, we would still be able to own slaves today and many of us would probably be slaves ourselves.
On the other hand, we elevate science to a god-like position and completely overlook that science has succumbed to the same problem - evil or immoral men can produce more evil than any religion ever has. Because of science we live longer, we cure terrible diseases but because of science we also have weapons of mass destruction, including COVID and other bio weapons, nuclear bombs, automatic guns, Dr Mengele-type genocidal experiments, immoral experimentation on unwitting humans and animals, and chemical fertilizers and other agricultural products and insecticides that are poisoning our food and water supplies and harming people and animals. Profit and funding makes scientists design studies and "find" evidence that suit the profit margins of their sponsors. Reign is right! Science and religion need each other and we all need a Soul Boom. I'm reading his book!

I feel so close to these ideas. Its so hard to be hopeful for the future, because during the time we develop different thinking and trying to respond to the "how can we change things", the Earth and non-human animals are dying and the ecosystems are already destroyed and being destroyed. And despite all the good news about the new generation trying to make a change, the new ways of consumerism brought by human greed and individualism way of thinking arrive and it feels like it's a neverending combat, but the Earth has an end.
I feel some solutions could reside in education, maybe start valuing philosophy and spirituality as equal to science and technology, and teach them in mandatory school programs.
Art could also help spread those ideas, that's what I try to do through my personal (visual) art. But people like to watch it and go "that's nice" without thinking about the meaning, or think about it and forget it quickly.
Awareness is a work of everyday, for all of us its hard to remind ourselves constantly to be present and grateful for life and care about the need of collectivity before our own, because of this society that forces us to consume.
Also I feel the emphasis of diminishing our ego, as humans, and open our sense of collectivity to non-human animals and our environment is left out. Veganism is a big element that could be added to the discussion.
I just got lost in my own thoughts, I could go for hours, plus I'm not a native english speaker. Sorry if I bore you 😅
Great video as always. Thank you Rich and Rainn to spread seeds of awareness and opening people's mind wider ❤
    Cheers from Switzerland 🇨🇭

So like 2 days ago I made my evening prayer with much fervor. I was asking for direct clear guidance. I trust my dreams and I dream often in the night. But it is normally the dream just before awakening that has revelation. Anyway the dream was short and quick. Lol. It was a vision of Rainn Wilson in a store buying khakis. Coupled with the image I heard the words. "your soul is brown". I have yet to decipher it's meaning but thought I'd share here.

Excellent episode, really enjoyed it. My only real qualm is both of their (for the most part) dismissal of psychedelics. I do agree that they are not the complete answer and you will get a lot more questions throughout your journeys - in which this ongoing, infinite process which can be escapism. That said, their evaluation does come off as people without first hand experience and/or have had mediocre experiences. I understand that society is finding a socially satisfactory acceptance of psychedelics with the whole mental health angle (which is certainly wonderful and true in my experience) but it is very humdrum compared to what this realm truly entails. It seems like most of the discussions around psychs in the public are from a trauma repair/metal health angle, but for others like myself it's the simple fact that you aren't going to see your hands morphing into trees/the visual spectacles under everyday 3D/5D existence nor are you going to have as obvious of communications with other beings from other dimensions/densities. Psychedellics offer an obvious confirmation of all things mystical through direct experience which normal life simply does not offer in as visually stunning or captivating of a way. I believe that, sure, you can get lost in this but there is a healthy medium in which you could spend a whole life making journeys as long as it is truly progressive.

Yeah, that segment didn’t hit right for me either. I did agree that they shouldn’t be the sole path for connecting to your essence or the divine. But as much as they didn’t like the newfound western entry into psychedelics, they also don’t sound knowledgeable enough to have such judgements around what people do in their professional or daily lives, after psychedelic experiences.
It’s not for anyone to say about how other people are processing or integrating those experiences. Yes, I don’t want psychedelics to be used and not integrated, or used recklessly. I’m also grateful they’re leaking into the mainstream, even if it’s messy, because they ARE helping people to gain insight into the human experience and evolve.

Love the interview. Having just gone on pilgrimage to Israel myself and having been immersed in so many sacred sites while there, I had the same thoughts when coming back to Los Angeles. How can I find the sacred here? But it was much easier than I anticipated. Los Angeles actually has a deep spiritual history and there are many sacred gardens, temples, and other sites around the area, but, even more important for me, there is beautiful Nature all around us. I only need to drive 15 minutes in any direction to find great natural spaces where I can connect with Nature and the divine.

Wakan Takan, Tunkashila, Unci Maca, thank you, the beauty way from the Dine, yes, thank you for bringing attention to Native Americans and honoring their ways. To help preserve their traditions would be a great service to this nation and to society. And to help with the mental health crisis we all face and especially our young people will be facing…. Not out of morality, but necessity.
I’ve come to realize that even atheists can agree we all have ancestors and by honoring them, we help honor ourselves. Making peace with them, by acknowledging that they are the ones that came before us, the best we can do to help make the way for generations to come by honoring our home, our earth. Our breath, clean air, our blood, clean water, our bodies, save soils, ❤
Lastly, I’m so glad to know their words and to have been in the presence of elders that have shared their wisdom and their songs. Their songs keep the spirit alive. Please help preserve them. It is the heartbeat of this land.
