    Was interesting to learn in another video you're near San Jose, where I live. Visited that region in 2018 and it definitely blew my mind. Can't wait to get back. Enjoyed the video. Just picked up an M11 on a trip to Japan - my first digital M body, and a 35 lux / 50 cron. Hope I can learn more about using them from your channel.

    Thanks for this presentation! In 1990, after attending a Sea Kayak Symposium near Port Angeles, I did a quick solo trip through parts of Olympic National Park, including day hikes in some of the places you visited during your trip. This is a beautiful place! It is good to see that it remains relatively wild and remote. Like you, i wanted to get home. I missed my son, who was age four, at the time, though my return leg was an epic road trip through parts of Oregon, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, then across Texas. Perhaps I can return, while I am still young enough to still do some day hikes.

    Hey Dave, nice work with this one, don’t be afraid to make a longer video you can pull it off. Watching your back catalog I do prefer these older videos as they were made from a place of deep passion and love of the art. Your M11 photos are the most honest photos, more pure. The combination of the M11 with Leica glass is special, and you’re a great photographer!

    Great video. I am considering purchasing a Leica, but I am debating whether to settle with an M11 or a Q3. It is hard to compare these two as they are fundamentally different. I am leaning towards the M11 based on 1. it is a range finder camera, 2. it has an interchangeable lens feature, 3. manual focus will allow me to pace down a bit as I am used to the rushed nature of street photography. Any comments are welcomed. Thanks.

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They are two vastly different experiences. I’d go M, all day long. The Q3 limitations will be felt quickly… namely, the 28mm lens. With the M, you have 75yrs of lenses and various focal lengths to embrace.

      @@davidherring Thanks for the feedback. I kind of felt that way as well. I had a GRIII and got tired of it within 6 months and sold it. I have a NIkon F3, which I never got tired of. Thoroughly enjoyed your film! I liked the variety in your images, and it showed us the essence of the area. From what I can tell :). You got to see so much in so little time. In nature it often doesn’t matter if it is rainy or sunny. Not like in the city. You’re outdoors anyway, nature is nature in all conditions. Glad you didn’t cancel the trip because often it is those breaks between showers or it’s when it clears up after a storm that you get the best photos. And when light is not on your side, it’s okay not to take pictures and just be in the moment. Get away from the city, but remember to get away from behind the rangefinder. One last thing: happy you took landscape images with the M system, it’s not just journalism, documentary and street where it shines, right? Lovely content, thank you for making and sharing! Love from Norway!

I don’t know if there’s anything better than photo trips to mother nature, but unfortunately, as you mentioned, some of the coolest spots have been overrun, I grew up in St. George just outside of Zion, and you post pandemic I just don’t see a point. The sheer amount of people, and unfortunately people that don’t respect the area as much as they should have really soured the experience.

    Hi Dave, very nice video and really beautiful shots you created here ! I think that going on a trip like you did, just with your camera(s), with no real plan or idea of what you want to do and to shoot is one of the best way to unleash creativity with no pressure of the result, just enjoying the process :) To be honest I am usually not a big fan of this king of video, but yours was really great, with a lot of pictures, beautiful places and a few comments about gear but not too much ;) Speaking of gear, what do you think of the new 50 summilux on the M11/M6 after some use ? Anyway, thank you for sharing this and congrats for your great photographs !

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much for the comment! I love the 50, and it really pairs well with the M11. More so than my M10R. The close focus is really cool for detail shots. While 35 is my go-to, I’d say the 50 is in 40% of the time.

      @@davidherring Great ! Thanks for your reply :) Keep enjoying this amazing gear and taking beautiful pictures ! I myself use a M11 too, and my 50mm at the moment is the Voigtlander 50 APO Lanthar, which I find to be amazing too. But I am tempted to replace it by the 50 Lux... tuff question haha. Anyway !
      Oh also, I never had any issue with my M11 since 14 months. I think it worth mentioning it, just as you did in another video, because this wonderful camera has sometimes a wrong reputation. I know that some people faced issues with it since the release date so this is real, however, we more often hear about people who have issues versus the majority who have nothing to complain about :) I mean, I am just guessing...
      Thanks again !

      @davidherring  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If the composition is dynamic with contrast, I go black and white. If it's dynamic with color (and contrast), I go color. That's my logic in a single sentence, though there is much more nuance. I actually shoot everything monitoring in BW instead of color.

      Haha, yeah it wasn't the best on this video. Shot it standard with the selfie cam. That said, my more recent video "Focusing on the Leica Summilux" was fully shot on the iPhone 15 Pro in prores using the main camera and I was really impressed with it. It's certainly not my studio cam (A7SIII) but for convenience and just getting the video I thought it worked great.

    As someone considering a M series and would be new to the Leica ecosystem, what is your recommendation for first lens?

    • @davidherring
      @davidherring  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s awesome! If you’re new to the rangefinder experience, I would generally recommend a 50mm. I never really shot that focal link until I got my M, but there’s something about shooting a composition through your rangefinder that is similar to how you see the world with your eyes. 50mm is close to that. There are some great 50mm lenses from Voigtlander that are less expensive, but the summicron is what I started with and eventually moved to the summilux.

      @@davidherring Hey Dave, just last week I almost traded it for a new M11-P from Tim. It's one of the limited black paint finish so the trade was even up for brand new and sealed, sheesh. Love this camera but what is weird is that I just prefer my Q3 images, in general, more so I keep thinking the M11 will bring that same IQ. Just hard to let go of what I believe will become a classic. I could just buy the M11 but I already have three cameras and I feel like I have to let one go if a new one comes in.
