Focal Lengths to Love and Hate on the Leica M11
มุมมอง 9K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Focal Lengths to Love and Hate on the Leica M11
Actually, the M10-R was one of the last M10 models to be released, not all that long before the release of the M11. (I believe the M10-D may actually have been the last M10 iteration - easy enough to confirm one way or the other online). I personally know several people who did the same as you, each for their own reasons but all believing that for them the M10-R was the better camera for them).
Wow buying it :) regarding the m11 mono what’s your thoughts on in in the long run is it Worth it or your considering to sell it and just convert your images to black-and-white
I’m probably going to sell it. It’s been fun and all, and I plan to use it a bit more. But ultimately, I think it’s a camera who never shoots color and is fully committed to black and white. The subtleties of the tone compared to a color conversion isn’t really worth carrying two bodies and spending the $$$ on it. The nice thing about this level of gear is the ability to unload it with no loss. I bought used and will sell for the same price.
Wow I thought the m11m is a world of difference between the m11 & m11m but I think now after hearing you I will buy the m10-p or m11 thanks Dave.
I did tri-x way back when in my old Nikon and developed my own film and printed it. Today I have a Leica Q2M and my Hasselblad X1DII for my serious work. I would have bought the presets in a heartbeat if you had it for Affinity Photo 2 which I use for all my photo work. I dumped Adobe because of their pricing schemes. I hope you do this preset for Affinity Photo. A lot of people are using it now.
If the demand gets there I’ll make presets for Affinity.
thanks for this. I adore black and white and this is the BEST
Thank you!
The tri-x presets are hands down my favorite ones. Can’t wait to dive in them for re edits from Scotland for my new site! Thanks for always making these and be amazing!
Thanks so much!
Do they wotk in version mobile of LR?
Yep! Every VGP pack comes with DNG files for mobile-only users, and if you use LR cloud then the XMP presets will sync from desktop over to mobile as well.
This is why I need a laptop, on the ipad LR or PS don’t have certain options or of they do is hard to get them, I do all my editing on the ipad but I NEED a laptop. Loved the presets and the video is very educational. I might repeat it to put practice on my editing
Yeah, the iPad version is definitely limited. I don't get it because I have an M2 iPad Pro that's more powerful than our family M1 iMac, but they keep the LR version on the iPad limited. Adobe makes no sense.
The only way to get Leica monochrome though is by removing the *e* to Monochrom ;)
But what if you just want good ol’ god fearing monochrome and not be Leica?
Dave, THANK-YOU!!! Tri-X was my go to in the late 60's and 70's as I was doing year book photography. Bought it by 100' rolls and rolled my own film canisters. Developed and enlarged my own. Used it to capture sports because it was so fast (ASA 400!). I could push it to 800 or 1600 by developing longer. This brings back so many memories! Thanks. Are you planning on Plus-X or Panatomic? I really liked the PanX for my nature photography (ASA 25)!
Love the idea! PanX would be fun!
Nowadays I prefer a color sensor even for shooting monochrome-only. The ability to do the BW-mixing in post is invaluable to me. Despite the great noise performance, monochrome sensors can be a bit tricky to deal with in the highlights, since they saturate faster. And when shooting with an EVF (Leica Q series) a monochrome sensor forces your view to be monochrome as well. On the regular version you can pick. When shooting B/W film you never see a black and white image in the viewfinder either.
I don't know if the difference is worth carrying two cameras. I feel like shooting a monochrom requires you to just commit permanently. I'm trying to hybrid, and for hybrid, your approach makes the most sense.
@ Exactly. The one nice thing about mono sensors (except the intentional limitation) is how practical high ISOs are. Similar feeling of novelty to shooting on a high MP body for the first time.
I am totally colorblind. I have achromatopsia. And I like this video and what you explain here.
Wild! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video, are you planning on offer the presets as a pack at any point?
We need that 👍
Packs get tricky when I discount every preset individually for my TH-cam channel and mailing list. I'll think on it though.
First
Ill comment when i am done with the video
Thanks!
Hi Dave, a great video, buddy! I agree, we could see landscape photography as the opposite of street photography, actually 😊 But I also see a big similarity: the art aspect is quite high in both, unless you are doing landscape photography just for documentation reasons. I made a video on my channel about how to get into fine art photography based on landscapes. That is pretty much the same for street photography. Thank you for the video and nice greetings, Christian
Thank you, and thanks for sharing!
I'm still a novice and just bought a Q3 and sold my Sony gear as I wanted to take more considered artistic shots and not Snap when travelling or out on the street shooting. I think you need to reduce the variables by using the exact same lens when comparing as I am sure that that will have some bearing....Let me know how that goes I am hanging with you !
Thanks for sharing! I definitely think there is wisdom and growth with one camera and one lens.
If you get over to UK again hook up with someone to spend time with in the Lake District Landscape but different to what you shoot.
I’d love to make it up there someday!
As a landscape shooter, did you have a harder time adapting with the rangefinder M on the street and getting things in focus? Or wished you had it like a SL with M or SL glass
I have a pretty dialed in muscle memory and focus quickly, so it wasn’t much of an issue for me. I also kept it in zone quite a bit, which helped the hit rate.
I wish there was a cheaper 24mp Q 43. Love my Q3 but I would not need 60mp for a more portrait oriented Q. Can't justify 12k tied up in multiple Qs lol
Snag an A7C and a 40mm and you’re set!
Seven Sisters looks incredible! I got to get back over to that area of the world soon.
It was awesome. Need to go back on a sunny day….if sunny days ever happen.
Very well put. Landscape & street/documentary are my main interests & I hadn't thought about how I approach both, but you are right I plan my Landscape trips, time of year, places, best times etc well before I get there & hope light is what I expect or adapt if weather is different. With Street I plan the days location, am I shooting colour or mono (m11 or M11M, lenses I expect (usually just the 28-35-50mm Leica MATE Filter. It is far more reactive or find a spot and wait for the subject to appear. Well constructed de-constructed approach I do by habit over many years not thought about.
Thanks for sharing!
Great photos and company.
100%! Thanks!
I had the same problem. I got rid of the camera in a week. Just didn't do it for me. SMH
I built a profile that sweetens it up for me, but I’m still not sure I’ll keep it.
Real sorry about your COVID bout, Dave. Great video after the retrospection, though. Glad you're on the mend. 40K steps is nuts. Great post. Loved your point about planning vs noticing. Super fun to think about where the disciplines overlap and differ.
Thank you! 40K was nuts. I felt it for days.
I think a major thing for street photographers to keep in mind: keep a well honed set of tools handy and ready. Know the settings and process for metering to get contrast and freezing action. Know how to expose, frame, and move to shoot motion blur. Know Sunny16. Of course know zone focus backwards and forwards. Etc. Etc. Any day the shots aren't working out, hone those core skills. Any day the brain is just slow, take those patient corners and wait for a shot to arrive. Basically take that idea of responding to the scene and apply it to the entire journey of street shooting; have goals and compare your success for the day against those goals instead of simply "did I get a good shot." The obvious upside is walking away with more skill.. but the sneaky upside is walking away at peace.
Thanks for sharing!
The miles I walk daily in SF are crazy haha I've gotten so used to it that I don't think about it as much, till now.
You don’t realize it all the time, but the miles can add up!
Dave, did you look at the prograf 1000 as well? If so, why did you choose the 300?
I went smaller since I am mostly using it to print 4x6 through 8x10 for family stuff. I don’t print to sell from here at home. This is for family archiving.
“Mann tracht un Gott lacht”
Fact of life!
What a poor translation from youtube, ugh. Hopefully all recognize this old adage. Yeah, certainly a fact of life, Dave. We do the best we can right? Great video though and very insightful into the polar opposite approach many will need to take with these two genres. Thanks!
Tones here are on point. You must be using some very good presets.
Thanks man. They seem like they’re very good presets.
there are different types of street work though, right dave? certainly, some go out on a route and hope for the best but many street photographers plan out time of day, lighting, events and composition for months. sometimes even frequenting those spots at those times to camp and wait for the right moment.
Sure, 100%! But a mountain doesn’t move, and the variables are very manageable. You can plan and within a reasonable window of time, get the shot. Street can have a major level of planning, but you never know if a man in a clown suit will walk through your frame walking a ferret on a leash. There are many, MANY variables that negate planning with street compared to landscape.
100% great message! One thing is for certain is how you present you have to be to not miss that moment or landscape scene you set out to capture
Thanks!
wouldn't you have to compare the sharpness between m11 and m11m by converting the m11 to b&w?
I don’t think so, because it was very noticeable between the Q2 and Q2M right out of the camera.
@ OK that's a fair point
great video
Thanks!
129 Floors.
Yeah my legs felt it the next day.
If both cameras use the same sensor, the color science used by the two manufactures explain the difference I see...!
I think you’re spot on!
so inspiring, I/m going to London next month and I gonna be like you guys taking photos!
Have fun!
Great advice Dave
Thank you!
NGL I feel like this camera would be a great starter studio camera, with its macro capability u can shoot smaller products and at F2 you can use lesser flashes or bigger softboxes. Outside it would also dominate in potraiture compared to the 28MM and would pair well with stronger strobes for outdoor shoots because of its lens factor
I think its great all around, but I don’t think starters are going to go for it haha
Dave, very happy to see your improved health and this video! Thanks. Lately I’ve been trying wildlife. Patience is a common trait required there as well. And for Street and wildlife, really knowing your gear, so you can quickly adapt to changing conditions is another critical skill. Practice, practice and more practice until you have complete muscle memory is another trait I am trying to develop.
Thank you! Man I love wildlife photography. Gets me so pumped.
Finally back !
Hoping it lasts haha
I enjoy your videos but, following the link to your site I was put off by the data-hoovering barrier. No hostility, I just thought you may appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed your visit.
I’m not really sure what you’re referring to, sorry.
relaxed and unagitated. Grrreat.
Thanks!
I had the M11 sold it and buying an M10 P, it’s the best one Leica made. The colors for my taste are the best.
The M10P is an incredible camera and of the 10 line, it’s definitely the best!
@@davidherring yes, but in general the M10 is great. The latest is not always the best. Thanks for the videos
It’s weird. I’ve lived 30 mins from Seaford for over 20 years and I think you have seen more of it than me!
Haha you better get out there then!

Thank you!!

Your video and the pictures are so amazing and beautiful ❤️
Thank you!
