11:50 They allow you to film whatever you want because they built those "tourist zones" for you to film, obviously they are not showing you the real North Korea, they are just showing you what they want you to see, so obviously there's no problem to film with such freedom over there.
This video reminded of the first time I went to Disneyland as a kid. All the citizens made me feel welcome. It was a magical experience. But when I got older I realized It was all a sham. Snow White, Goofy, Micky Mouse, the 7 dwarves etc etc etc were nothing more than underpaid actors
Well if you pay like $2000 for a trip to Disneyland what else do you want? For them to treat you like crap? It’s a theme park in the United States, not a capital of a dangerous country they’re not similar at all, that’s like saying if some random person treats you nice they’re a sham because in North Korea Capital they treat you nice
0:25 Nothing should be scarier than to see all the architecture in the city, and how new and pristine it looks, in what is the Capital of NK, and it's like a ghost town. Doesn't matter what time it is, it's like 1/100th the populous of what a city that size should be. It's all about "perception", and that is truly frightening. It's all for show.
I'm really considering such a trip as well now. Of course as a Tourist you don't get to experience the real North Korea, even if you take longer tours and tours into parts of the country that are more rural. Still, it's very interesting in my opinion. Terrifying - and should I ever do it, I would propably be tense an somewhat nervous the whole time - but interesting.
Me too I would love to go but would be terrified to do something wrong and get arrested lol! Clever of them not to let you see the starving people and poverty in the countryside.Feel sorry for all those people trapped there.
I've noticed in more recent videos like yours that things have relaxed a little there (at least for tourists). I remember seeing a few years ago the vice guide to north korea and it really was very strict. Still, i think anyone who goes there is pretty brave (or at lease naive) because if something was to go wrong, like for that poor american chap, then there is nothing your embassy can do, so youre pretty much on your own. Then there is the whole debate about funding a state like that, which lets its people starve etc. Either way, theres better places on the planet to go. Saying that, i think this video is awesome and the insights into the country and being able to see it from the comfort of my own home is great! so thanks for an awesome video!
it really give me the vibes there tying to improve there public image and need the money, i heard in another video they were trying to make/export there own cosmetic products. I'm not convinced the situation is improving for the regular North Korean.
@@LiveManga37 yeah i woulndt imagine for a minute things are improving for the north koreans especially those outside pyongyang. I remember previous tours and the locals werent allowed to engage at all with the foreigners, but here you see them playing football together and stuff.
I’m sure NK is aware of the other videos, especially Vice. They’ve completely manipulated their tourists each and every time, and they’re just getting “better” at it.
I hope that soon people are freely able to travel and interact with North Korea and it's population. I would like to see NK as an active participant and friend of the rest of the world. As of now it seems that they are behind a barrier and we dont know much about life there compared to other countries. We need less conflict and more friendship on Earth. This video only shows a sliver of the actual life of most people living there. If NK were more transparent with the general population, I imagine most of the world would have a more sympathetic opinion of the country. At least the people that aren't involved in government.
@@ext93 Exactly. Some people in the comments mock these people and how they live but it's not North Koreans' fault. They were just born in the wrong place. It's obvious that they're brainwashed to some degree. That's why I don't think people are being fair mocking by calling them actors or NPCs etc. As long as the Kim dynasty is around I don't think North Korea will ever open up to the world.
If you want to explore more in-depth, you can find private tour guides, they can customise the trip according to your needs. I watched a serial of vlogs made by a Chinese tourist, he travelled to so many places that ordinary tours won't go.
I've seen several videos by others who went on guided tours to North Korea; they're mostly from several years ago, and they show a more restricted experience. However, their trips were usually longer than yours, so perhaps there were more opportunities to get into trouble with their minders/tour guides. It's also possible that the North Koreans are taking a different approach to their foreign guests, giving them a bit more leeway. There are a lot of videos out there about trips to N. Korea, and they often deal with the over-zealous attempts at control. Maybe the N. Koreans are aware of this and want to avoid any further negative publicity on that score.
Regular people in Pyongyang videos walk while trying not to stare, meanwhile she just stays in that small circle looking at people while holding a phone with both hands. She's supposed to stay lowkey and friendly, so possible "threats" can let their guard down, then she'll report "crimes" from people who got to comfortable.
The person I called "Watchers" official term is called "Minders". There job is to watch you so you don't say and do "disrespectful" things and GUIDE you.
You felt fairly free to say whatever you wanted, but you still waited to till you were back in Beijing to discuss your first impressions because you didn't feel free to say what you wanted. 😂😂😂
Keep in mind, visiting that country and living there are two completely different things. Obviously if there are only certain places you can go, they want westerners to have the best possible perception of NK as they possibly can.
It seems that you travelled in Pyongyang only... this is one single city that have a light at night and other NK people don't allow to enter into freely (I know you didn't allow to move to other place though). It means that most people in your film are communist members (probably high level) and their families. I have supported some NK defectors in SK and have read many news form the most reliable media in relation to NK. Please don't forget that there are more than 22,000,000 people still struggling and horribly controlled by the party outside of Pyongyang.
Nice cropping Honestly though, a fascinating look into the country. Of course they'll show you what they want you to see, but ultimately that's just why you take the tour with a grain of salt.
I read a graphic non-fiction "novel", (more a travelogue) by Guy Delisle who followed this trail who said he was rather alarmed that he did not see ONE elderly or disabled person on the streets at all...I wonder if you witnessed the same ?
NK will let you see what they want you to see, you cant even go outside without their governments tour guide, everything is still under their control.. But still praying for this country’s freedom 🙏🏻
I have seen some of youtubers videos about Nk and come to realize that they feature almost the same. Hoping next time they can show us their hospital, university, museum etc 😊..

You seemed to have a lot more fun than many and it seems like you didn't have any fear, and others have had a lot of fear and it looks like they fed you well and they treated you with hospitality...
How is it that you were able to capture video freely on the streets of Pyongyang? How were you allowed, did nobody warn you against it or did you have the permission to do so freely? This is actually the first video I've come across on youtube that actually seems to film everyday life there.

that dude at 9:39 was really nice
11:50 They allow you to film whatever you want because they built those "tourist zones" for you to film, obviously they are not showing you the real North Korea, they are just showing you what they want you to see, so obviously there's no problem to film with such freedom over there.
This video reminded of the first time I went to Disneyland as a kid. All the citizens made me feel welcome. It was a magical experience.
But when I got older I realized It was all a sham. Snow White, Goofy, Micky Mouse, the 7 dwarves etc etc etc were nothing more than underpaid actors
Im pretty most of those actors enjoy their work. They like talking to kids and helping them have a fun time. Otherwise they wouldnt work there
And just like DPRK if you run into some secret government experiment in Disneyland you'll "disappear".
Look up the documentary Children of Orange County and you will see how fake America can be.
@@jazroNA my comment flew right over your head and it is still flying
Felicitaciones Jord, buen contenido, y una mirada interesante a un lugar tan extraño y lejano para muchos de nosotros.
Such an interesting journey, can't wait to see more!
Fun fact: pretty much every single building in Pyongyang was leveled during the Korean war
Very good and interesting video that jord! Thanks

Se for, venha nos contar a sua experiência!
Me too I would love to go but would be terrified to do something wrong and get arrested lol! Clever of them not to let you see the starving people and poverty in the countryside.Feel sorry for all those people trapped there.
LOL went to NK with no trousers - that’s a bold move
Love this.
@Ammonia 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@Ammonia The main reason is that they have a really strong connection with China.
Your tour seems a little more laid back than in other videos i've seen that are at least 5 years old now.
north korea is getting more relaxed with tourists. its not as strict anymore as it used to be.. for tourists at least!
They look like lovely people. An amazing video blog. Thanks Jord.
lol
Lady at 2:51 was defiantly a "watcher" checking to see if she needed to report your friend for doing something "bad" to the flag.
Regular people in Pyongyang videos walk while trying not to stare, meanwhile she just stays in that small circle looking at people while holding a phone with both hands. She's supposed to stay lowkey and friendly, so possible "threats" can let their guard down, then she'll report "crimes" from people who got to comfortable.
that was the tour guide you moron
Think it may of been the tour guide...
The person I called "Watchers" official term is called "Minders". There job is to watch you so you don't say and do "disrespectful" things and GUIDE you.

Come to Venezuela. I can give you a tour.

Thank you very much for uploading this amazing video,
I guess this place is still living in the 80s or early 90s
Yup. It's feel like time travel to the past
Note: no reply by the video blogger a year later. Very poor!
The music being played in the speakers is so creepy omg
Nice cropping
Honestly though, a fascinating look into the country. Of course they'll show you what they want you to see, but ultimately that's just why you take the tour with a grain of salt.
Good content! Keep it up!
Finally wait till you update the video, so lucky~~
I read a graphic non-fiction "novel", (more a travelogue) by Guy Delisle who followed this trail who said he was rather alarmed that he did not see ONE elderly or disabled person on the streets at all...I wonder if you witnessed the same ?
HOLY SHIT- FIRBVOUROTNGUNTIYUNINB
NK will let you see what they want you to see, you cant even go outside without their governments tour guide, everything is still under their control..
But still praying for this country’s freedom 🙏🏻

I'm sure you're talking about SK who's still US Colony.
The human spirit will always rise to freedom. Even if it takes decades for them to see past the brainwashing, they'll have a revolution someday.
@Michael G Fucking hilarious
I have seen some of youtubers videos about Nk and come to realize that they feature almost the same. Hoping next time they can show us their hospital, university, museum etc 😊..
it's interesting how almost every north korea vlog ive seen has a visit to the 'once a year' festival.. seems like they only arrange tours around this period to showcase to foreigners?

Why even ask if you know the answer? They only show areas made for tourists, made to look good, made to look clean. It is fake.

Like a giant mall...
no city is that clean. guess why around there you see nothing else? so you focus on the ‘interesting’ things that you actually see. the stuff in pyongyang. the staged things and the „great statues“. nobody wants you to question the other side. the country. the festival, the „locals“, the ice truck, everything is staged.
I guess it's because of the background music, it makes everything look even more fake than it actually is.

Good Vid! Enjoyed it.
Quite informative and gives some insight into what a visitor could expect to see.
How is it that you were able to capture video freely on the streets of Pyongyang? How were you allowed, did nobody warn you against it or did you have the permission to do so freely? This is actually the first video I've come across on youtube that actually seems to film everyday life there.
DW did a great NK documentary, they had unprecedented access.
Of course you're allowed. Why wouldnt you be?

0:52 One the left, a guy in a green jacket leaves the hotel. After walking a few paces outside, he seems to inconspicuously look in the direction of the camera, then a few moments later he turns around and heads back into the building.
