This is a 400 year old composition by Thyagaraja in Telugu language and falls under Carnatic classical music from south India. This is arranged in progressive rock style, but without altering the original raga ie notes / melody (the singer is a trained Carnatic musician) The band is from Kerala as well as the singer where they speak a different language. This band is brilliant. Considering that most of the members of this band are not full time musicians, but professionals working in software companies like google, they are performing well.

Even 300 years is wrong my friend. Saint Thyagaraja started composing prolifically post 1810. Which means at best, this composition is about 200 years old and not 400 or 300.

Classical Indonesian music is heavily influenced by classical Indian music. In historical times many parts of present Indonesia, Cambodia etc were ruled by south Indian dynasties. Also spread of Hinduism and Buddhism from India is also one of the biggest reason behind similarity. So, yes culturally traditional Indonesia is quite close to India.

I have been a follower of this band and the main vocalist for almost 9 years now... and I have attended multiple concerts by them. They are just too mesmerizing live. The arrangement, vocals and the instrumentals all are outstanding. These compositions are completely a different experience live. There are a lot of other pieces like this by AGAM and all of them are outstanding.
AGAM is a South Indian Band consisting of members from different states from south India. The main vocalist is from Kerala and the band members are from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and AndraPradesh.
There are all working in IT companies in Bangalore and that's how the band was formed with Bangalore as their base.

Indian Classical Music is really a treasure trove of time signatures. The time signatures themselves are seen as cycles. We have a cycle of 16 beats divided into 4 bars of 4, but then we also have varieties of 7, 12 , 10, 14, 15, 18 beat cycles not necessarily divided into equal parts. Some are really exotic like 8 1/2, 9 1/2 or 3 1/2 beat cycles. It can go up to 108 beats a cycle.

AGAM is THE first band which I genuinely felt like something very very unique, inspiring, exciting, creative, fulfilling, with soulful and melodious vocals, coupled with rock and Indian classical music incorporated into western instruments. The Guitarist "Praveen" is very very impressive..the way he plays the electric Guitar and makes it sound like a Veena is incredible and not to forget the incredible vocalist and the composition itself with AGAM's signature style of tempo, rhythm change and variations.... and the impressive instrumental break in all their performances is something to Marvel upon.
AGAM will always have a specific place in my heart...
AGAM was the first band I genuinely forgot myself completely and got immersed in the music when I got the opportunity to attend their concert live standing in the first row, not knowing anything about them till then and being more than pleasantly surprised by what I had experienced.

So the whole song is set in 4/4 or 8/8 (however you want to look at it). Listen again to the initial guitar solo, where the time signature seems to COMPLETELY break down. If you listen to how many beats actually take place from the moment the solo starts until the singer starts the second verse, it is a multiple of 16. The thaalam (beat) doesn't actually disappear, it simply takes a back seat to the rhythmical intricacy of the guitar solo.

Indian idol 13 has just started. Judges Vishal Dadlani, Neha Kakkar and Himesh Reshammiya were left spell bound by contestant Navdeeep Wadali. He has been taught by his Grand father ustad Puran chand wadali and his son sukhwinder wadali.
You should listen to his performance and perhaps comment.
You try listening to wadali brothers and sukhwinder wadali. You will be pleasantly surprised.
