    My hubby thinks I crazy raising quail cause of how small they are and how big our family is lol I love the sounds the roasters make so it's a win win for me

      There isn't a huge meat yield but they do produce a lot of eggs. I like having them around too and the little bit of meat that they provide on top of all those eggs is pretty darn tasty.

    Many thanks Chris, your info as usual was very helpful. 👍

    another way, Chris, is when adding new quail in with your flock - is to introduce them in the dark... that way when the new day arises they aren't too aware that there are newbies in with them. and, as always, great vid! =0)

    I learned to remove the males for a couple of days before mixing the two week old quail with my laying hens. They establish the pecking order for a bit, and then all is well. After a couple days, the males just want to get back with their girls. I have the Texas A&M quail.

      Good tip. I never add 2 week old quail to my existing birds but if I did that seems like the way to do it.

      Slightly Rednecked Chris do you think you will ever build a quail run or you don't have enough room for that?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that you were generally first. Thanks so much for watching all my videos. I am glad you like them.

      I might. I have toyed with some ideas for grow out pens. I have plenty of room but that stuff costs money and time....two things I am in short supply of. :)

    Chris love the new videos. How do you choose or what do you look for when deciding which roosters to keep for breeding out of your grow out pens? I have 25 birds growing out right, prolly going to keep all my females, then select certain males to keep. Just curious how to select males.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much. That is a good question. I base my decision on the size of the rooster. I just keep the biggest ones. Hope that helps

      Jeffery Jackson Also watch your males and see if they are breeding all the available females often. Some males are just not doing their job and in this context useless. You won't know unless you spend time with them.

    • @Spudzmckenzie1
      @Spudzmckenzie1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      dany richard - my original male was breeding all three of my original females. Then he got to "cocky" I guess. lol. He killed 1 of my females and tried killing a another one. So hes been in solitary confinement for almost 2 months now. He might be the first candidate for a bacon sweat suit on the grill.

      That's my policy with over aggressive animals too. :)

    Chris, I’d like to get some more birds to introduce new blood lines. Do I get males or females? And how do I integrate them to my existing flock?

    Hi Chris, can I have two male button quails together ? Will they fight without females in the cage?
    I just keep them as pets.

    I have about 25 square feet with 9 birds. I want to add 10 younger birds. Is that a problem?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn't be. As long as the new birds are young and not sexually mature yet they should be able to mix in with the existing birds just fine.

    I have 13 quail that are around 11 days old, and yesterday I picked up 8 that are 6 weeks old. What age should I introduce the young birds to the older birds?

    Hello! I have a question for anyone who knows about this stuff. I had a pair, one male and one female. The female had recently started laying eggs in the middle of winter (how is that possible?) but then she unexpectedly passed away. The male was left all alone, and would keep on calling for her. So we decided to get two more females, and put them in the cage so he could have soem partners. But as soon as we put them in he started fighting them, and one got badly hurt. I took them out, but don't know what to do know. The two new females have to live in that cage, but if the male is constantly fighting them I'm afraid they'll die. Any ideas on what to do???

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Breeding behavior (egg laying and roosters crowing) is dependent on the amount of light they are getting not the weather. If they are getting 14 hours a day of light, they will lay eggs and the roosters will crow. They are also more aggressive during this time so introducing new birds to each other is more difficult. If you can cut the amount of light down to less than 10 hours a day that will help to calm them down. What you are describing as fighting is more than likely breeding behavior. The rooster was probably grabbing the hens by the feathers on the back of their head. That is common but some roosters can be a little aggressive about it for sure. If reducing the light doesn't work, you may just have an aggressive rooster. I hope that helps.

      @@Slightlyrednecked thank you for your help! But what do we do if the rooster is a little too aggressive? I tried to do something from another video I saw, and now they seem OK, but incase thy dtsrt fighting again what do I do?

    Hi Chris, I have couple cages for my quails.. sometimes during the day I mixed them all up in a bigger areas In my garden, do you think that will affect the egg production? Is a jumbo quail a different breed?

    • @eduardob.d.3925
      @eduardob.d.3925 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Btw good video. I'm not sure what to do with my males. my one rooster with two hens in a cage pecks at them so I introduce another female but he just started pecking at her. Also is it true pure white quails are more valuable?

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might affect the egg production in the sense that quail don't tend to like to be moved around a lot. If they are stressed out they tend to stop laying for a period of time. But then again, if it is a consistent thing and doesn't seem to bother them they might be able to acclimate to it well.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure the "pecking" you are seeing is not breeding activity? They tend to be pretty rough when grabbing the females by the back of the neck. If that is the case he should calm down...give it a little time. You could always keep the rooster separate and only introduce him to the females once a week. He is going to crow like crazy though.
      As far as white birds being more valuable? Not in my experience. In fact I dislike them because you can't visually sex them. Just my opinion though.

    • @eduardob.d.3925
      @eduardob.d.3925 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pecking Is serious, he pecks at her eye and makes the surrounding area bleed. I have also seen that the rooster are pretty rough when they mate. I think I got ripped off then, I paid $50 for two pure white rather than the usual $5 each as the seller said they were rare.

      This is the kind of thing that I normally answer in my Patreon feeds but there aren't many people over there yet so i will do my best to help out here. It is just difficult to keep up with the comments sometimes in TH-cam so if I miss one I am sorry.
      I would try to isolate the rooster. If you have the option put him in a small cage inside the cage with the other birds. You need to watch closely though and make sure it isn't one of the other hens that is doing the pecking. Often times that is what I find. If it is I would isolate her from the group. On a good note, if you can stop the pecking the hen should recover. I have had birds lose an eye but be just fine overall. I hope that helps.
      By the way, if you want to join on Patreon you can check it out here. If not that is ok and I will still try to help as much as I can. www.patreon.com/SlightlyRednecked

    What do you feed your adults?

      I feed all of my birds game bird starter (28% or higher) straight out of the bag. Hope that helps.

    like all you quails vids. i have an all white quail, do you know the name.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If i was to name it it would probably be "Snowball" or maybe "Frosty". I am not very creative myself. But seriously how in the world am I supposed to know what you named your bird? (I am just kidding with you, couldn't resist a smart alec answer) :)
      The all white bird generally comes from the Texas A&M line. Not that all white birds are Texas A&M but it has kind of become synonymous with that so you should be ok to call it an A&M. Hope that helps.

    • @Slightlyrednecked
      @Slightlyrednecked  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that the pure white ones are "English Whites". Good point on the black spot.
