  • Susan Rostow, inventor of Akua printmaking inks and materials demonstrates a painterly collagraph printmaking approach to using Akua Carborundum Gel. This video covers, mixing acrylic medium with Carborundum Gel for brushwork and inking the plate using intaglio and monotype / relief techniques for printing editions and monoprints. Further methods for making collagrah plates with Carborundum Gel can be found on the Akua Printshop TH-cam channel. Hands-on printmaking workshops are held at Susan Rostow's Brooklyn Studio on an ongoing basis. Contact Susan Rostow through her website: www.SusanRostow.com

I would think the carborundum is bad for brushes, but the brushes in the video look immaculate. Would be great to know if those brushes were fairly new for the purpose of filming of if it's realistic to expect brushes to stay in great shape even when used with carborundum.

Thank you Susan for this video, it got my mind racing with possibilities!! A great compliment to the Dark Field Mezzotint video. You never skimp on giving information and this generosity is what made me go out and buy myself my first set of Akua products. TFS!!

Your videos are all SO helpful! The only problem is, when I see a new one, it turns out I am inspired to buy more stuff LOL! But that's okay…it sure makes for fun days in the studio!

Hi, do you think it is possible to print this method using a brayer with good arm muscle (!). I do not have access to a press

Susan This is excellent stuff (as per usual !!) The 'plate' onto which you applied the carborundum gel looked quite smooth - I am surprised that it was not first 'abraded' to give that surface a 'tooth' so to speak. Is it not necessary.......Thanks for sharing your developments.

We are thrilled to hear you've enjoyed the video! The acrylic gel really sticks to the plate well enough to hold up for printing. This is a useful feature in that not only does it cut out the labor of sanding your plate, but it allows you to have a true whites in the open areas of the plate. Keep us posted with any other questions and thank you for tuning in!

    Hi there!
I am from Pakistan and have a very little collection of Akua Inks as I have to ask friends travelling abroad for favours to get these amazing inks!

Anyways, I want to experiment with Akua Carborundum Gel and before I get it I need to know what Acrylic Medium I can mix it with? What I see in the demo video here is a white acrylic paint that is being mixed with the gel to lighten it up. Is it so or is it some special acrylic medium. Kindly clarify it for me please before I order.
