How to Catch Shrimp at Night

- In this week's episode we show you how to catch shrimp at night. Shrimp come into shallow water at night to feed. This means you can catch shrimp from a dock. Since you aren't in a boat (like in our last shrimping video) you must make sure the shrimp keep coming to you. To do this we put out chum to attract the shrimp. In this video we also show you a cool way to throw big nets.

Try putting your bait in pantyhose and hanging it in the water all around the dock, works really well still and it seems to last longer and not get washed away as easy. Also try mixing some canned cat food with your fish meal, it works great! Years ago we use to use Kozy Kitten catfood, but they got bought out by 9 Lives so now we use that. +Jarro Ladner Thanks that's a good idea! I haven't tried cat food before but we did put some menhaden chum with some of the bait balls. We grind it up ourselves with a leaf grinder! Not sure if it helped though. Thanks for the encouragement! We have a lot of videos we are getting ready for this summer. I think they will be even better too. That would be cool to to fish in MS and LA! I hear yall have an awesome fishery!

people make throwing nets so complicated. I posted a video of an ole' man showing my 13 year old son the easiest way ever which is perfect for extra heavy nets because the weight is shared on both arms. No throwing the net over your shoulder getting you soaked and no biting on unsanitary weight line. My small son learned this in just a few tries with a 10' extra heavy net that the man made there at his store. Check it out.

That’s how are used to cast a net... but I never used one that big. I couldn’t afford it.

We mixed in clay from a local stream to keep the chum balls together. Since it has handles, a laundry tub is better to handle the catch than a plastic pool. I will have to try the new net throw method.

Reel Hazardous this brings back some memories I was I worked a commercial fishing boat for 25 years we harvested grass shrimp to supply bait shops we work by the Dumbarton Bridge in California I don't know if you're familiar with that area the boat we used was a converted Minesweeper from the Vietnam era 36 feet long 10 feet wide powered by a 671 diesel betz GM and the prop 32 inch diameter occasionally we would catch big fish and shrimp net to like a sturgeon over 9 ft long and the biggest halibut we caught was close to five feet long
Where do you buy fish meal?
Well, here on the MS gulf coast we punch some holes in catfood cans, chunk em over, and throw away..never fails.
cast nets are illegal in some parts of Australia, we hook under water lights up on fast flowing wharf section or under a boat.... and just hold a long handled prawn net in Just dangle your feet, we call it a run... normally on a No moon... few beers in 2 hours we get about 20-30 kg (44+lbs) casting a net roots you after 30 or so.

yeah Im east coast, 250km south of sydney, Batemans Bay. I live next to a lake so i grew up prawing and fishing, um Prawns are everywhere here mate, great Lobster, Blue swimmer Crab... some blokes call them sand crabs.. the ones that mess up nets when prawning... maybe you have another name/names, i dunno.... little Mud Crab... scampi... yabbies... heaps of Abalone... ext.... yeah when a run is on you will always find a few old cobbs having a go. Its never packed but. Do you get fucking fortescue fish? cause we get them too :/

I'm not sure how the shrimping is in the Florida Keys. Oug there are shrimp there I think these tactics would work but I haven't heard if there are large numbers of them inshore like up here.

What are y'all using to make y'alls fish meal?
We were just mixing some flour and fish meal. I'm not sure what the brand of fish meal was we were using. We were using water to get it wet to mold it into balls and I tried mixing some ground menhaden into it but we don't usually do that.

What would be the best season for shrimping?
It depends where you are located. In northeast Florida, it is usually August to October depending on rain.

You can get pellets or fish meal. If you get meal, mix it with clay or flour. We get ours from a local feed store but there isn't a particular brand.
So this is the same fish meal used for plants- sorry for the dumb question but we dont bait them and rarely we get them here in VA but they've been showing up the past few years

+Thaison Nguyen Yep, only fresher! We did a video on catching shrimp in the day as well. You may see some boats with mostly fishing gear in that video. Often times people will make a few cast to catch enough live shrimp for a day of fishing. What we do is use the smaller shrimp that would be harder to peel as bait. We just put them in a bag and freeze them for later.

Was the fish-feed more costly than the catch?
No it doesn't take a whole lot of chum and we just add a little of it to the flower.

Don't know where this was filmed but here in texas night shrimping is illegal and I've seen people arrested for taking shrimp in a net over a spillway at night. The simpliest way to catch shrimp like you're trying is to get a minnow trap and throw in a perforated can of cat food.

please don't throw your net like that if you like your teeth... I've seen guys loose them when they toss the net. Like the old string to the door handle.
+PoolBoysTX1 As long as you remember to let go your teeth will be fine ;) There are several techniques we use; some you put the net in your mouth others you don't. Jeremy uses a technique where he holds two sections and throws part over his shoulder while J.J. puts part in his mouth. They both work, its just preference.
