A lightweight alternative would be dual laser pistols with dual laser orbits. Might not be the most effective, but the light show and volume of fire is quite something
theres a few builds that can carry you through all of NG+ with minimal tweaking. my favorite is double zimmerman shotguns and songbirds or switch out songbirds for stun needles. if your careful with your shots and boost kick a lot of trash mobs you wont run out of ammo.

There weren't any good energy weapons boosting generators in ch 1, but there is one with almost 100 rating (half a full bar on the stats screen).

Energy weapons are even stronger on Heavy AC's because you can carry more.

The dual energy cannons on the shoulders carried me thru the game.. pair it up with dual Zimmermans if you want easy mode lol

It's also oppressive as hell. In pvp it's energy equivalent of machine-guns. You can't run away from this thing.

I just tried something like this (but with Huxley drones instead of laser orbits). A relatively easy S-Rank on the Helicopter mission for sure.

Also switch Gatlins for Zimmermans on occasion.
