      No way! I read about it in old home economics books that dedicated separate chapters to self care before home care. They stressed the importance of taking care of yourself first before you take on any task. Contouring was presented on several facial types and curl setting was the next chapter.

      13 years ago when me and my friend were 15 she dropped out of school and went to beauty college, she had to buy the course makeup book, it hadnt been updated since the 80's but it had an entire chapter on contouring and highlighting. Ive been contouring ever since although just with a bit of bronzer, nothing like what's in style now. Contouring and highlighting was always something makeup artists and drag queens did, it wasn't mainstream like it is now thanks to social media.

      Me too! I took home ec as a freshman (in '94) I learned very basic sewing & cooking but let me tell you those simple skills have come a long way & helped me develop them further on my own. Some schools are actually bringing that back...maybe they realize that it's important seeing that some kids don't get that taught at home

    • @kokolatte825
      @kokolatte825 7 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      GIRL•OVARY•ACTING right. Home economics is more important now than ever I feel. Today kids are less likely to have parents who teach them or let them do these things at home. And more people are single longer which means men and women need to know how to take care of themselves.

    Some people think that "old school" standards of beauty are very constricting, limiting, and does not promote individuality. If you listen to the video, it actually promotes ideals of inner beauty while at the same time encourages hygiene and proper diet. You don't hear about totally cutting carbs or fat in the diet. Just everything in moderation. And oh, they have been promoting sun screen ever since!
    Some terms used might have been outdated and now considered taboo now but if you look at the whole message, you can see that this video is very progressive.

      And frankly as far as social attitudes and gender roles go, I'm glad we've moved on. I think its okay to miss or admire their clothes and music and style but the older days weren't always great. Gender, racial and "moral" attitudes were alot more restrictive and damaging, and still are today but at least we've seen more progress in that regard.

      Amazing tutorial for young ladies for sure. And it's all in one, in a kind of no nonsense way. I think the only thing I'd change is instead of negro, I'd say higher or more melanin content. But I'm black and I don't know single black chick that doesn't naturally (virgin skin) have oilier skin, and dryer hair than white chicks (total opposite for my naturally blonde white friends) so that was pretty spot on. Not sure about the Asian skin as I don't know many Asians.

    This is just another bit of evidence that 1969 was the absolute best year for fashion. Every time I see some sort of 60s fashion video or slideshow it's always from 1969! How one year could hold so many gorgeous looks is beyond me, hopefully some of these styles will make a comeback. I'm getting kinda tired of this whole 90s grunge trend that's going on now.

    as much as some of the things in there made me go "ummm" I have to remember that all of those tips and mannerisms made sense in that time and nothing was to offend anyone about the way they look. there was diversity and a lovely explanation of beauty being more than skin deep and how important it is to take care of yourself, and that using makeup as a tool of improved representation was nothing new nor anything to be ashamed of
