- Phoenix is back into Dota 2! He's one of my favorite heroes because of how aggressive you can be, and his team fight contribution is really massive, which I find fun.
I like the 4-4-1-2 skill build, or perhaps the 2-4-3-2 skill build. I think maxing dive after spirits when you are behind is a mistake though, since sunray can be used from the distance without being in danger.
Try to build tanky hp items on him like an urn of shadows, treads, or a vitality booster, and aim for utility items that can help you and your teammates stay alive!

I thought playing a Phoenix should make the screen brighter.
This wasn't so clear so I figured I'd say it. Pheonixs spirits stack only with the attack debuff. The damage does not stack. So pacing them out is a great way to do tons of damage. Also, the typical skill build is 1 4 4 with ulti at 6 11 and 16. Sunday is great for picking off people and just spaming onto of a team fight.

Dunno if I like that mek on Timber, I think you should've built it instead. Other than that, I still can't decide between treads or tranquils for him. The Shiva's is a great choice, though.

I mean you get that insane regen, great movespeed (even when broken) and 4 armor all the time.
Treads can be useful, but you're not going to be rightclicking at all so the extra damage and attack speed is wasted. The extra health is nice but I think regen and armor is a higher priority.

You can regen while casting sunray. Purge never skilled or used it becasue it costs too much health and he had no regen. With Tranquils you can skill Sunray and actually use it.

I'm on an 82% winrate on Phoenix - seriously, don't get treads, tranquils are by far the best boots! All your skills remove a percentage of health, so having more health isn't gonna' do much (and you're really NOT a right clicker - fire spirits are your main source of damage!).
You need healing over time items. Pipe/Mek depending on what damage your enemy is doing, and urn of shadows for the heals and the mana regen. Luxury items would be shivas (slow attack speed even more to keep you alive during your ulti), linkens (if they have lots of point target disables - e.g. skywrath), or even dagon if you're snowballing (dive + dagon + fire spirit + urn charge will kill most heroes!).
Purge, the screen is black, but all the sound is there.
Tranquil Boots are almost custom-made for Phoenix. His 3 attacks drain hp, requiring some regen when used often... but more importantly, they don't break Tranquil Boots when you use them.
If you're playing artillery in a team fight, popping Spirits and tossing them at max range, Tranquils will have you back to full health by the time you need to dive or use Sun Ray. If you hit Sun Ray without being attacked, Tranquils will actually heal you while you are a huge laser beam of death.
When you're using Dive to harass or cliff walk, Tranquils will fix the damage. You can farm a full creep wave with zero right clicks, using only lvl 4 Fire Spirits and Tranquils to have full health at the end.
And considering Purge was at 1 armor for the first 22 minutes, their +4 armor is key if you are taking ANY harass at all during the game.
I rly hope valve buffs phoenix atleast a little bit (maybe change sunray or give an aditional nuke to his ult) Atm it just feels like allot of heroes counter him and he gets rekd by coordination from the oponent.
Well, he got nerfed recently before being ported, as he was a little too good in my(and some ther people ) opinions. You can easily do up to 1K magic damage level 7 without really putting yourself in danger already, what else do you need ?
ZeeTwistedLight The damage nerf wasn't that big (DPS reduced from 20/40/60/80 to 15/35/55/75.). But apart from that, his last nerf was in 6.77, and after that. Sunray got buffed and buffed.
The biggest nerf in 6.80 was that your Icaros dive will end if you get stunned.
Apart from everything like that, hope Icaros get picked up in the Pro-Scene soon (6.79c: Added Phoenix in CM.)
Mairo San 6% of your current HP isn't much, and it already do a fixed amount of damage ontop of the % amount.
Mairo San I reccomment getting a Pipe, Mek or Urn if thats the chase. Because when it come to Icaros, you need HP regen before HP overall, if you buy say a vitality booster without any HP regen, it won't solve your problem at all. It only mean you have a tiny bit more health after you use your combo (w/o ult).
Also, Phoenix is NOT a #5 support, he need some certian items to operate even more effectivly and stay and fight.

correction: sun ray does dmg to them based on their max hp, not yours. this means that getting more max hp will increase the amount of damage you take from your abilities, but overall will give you more hp to work with. this is why people prefer pure hp regen instead of max hp

The animation on Phoenix is so nice to look at.
it is worth pointing out, heroes such as ursa and windranger, which can cap off their attack speed can destroy the supernova easily, specially because they ignore the fire spirits's debuff
sun ray is awesome when you have your carry and theirs in a melee fight, or for anyone who traps enemies, espscialy rattletrap when he uses power cogs to trap some one with him, and its range means if you positioned right you can heal you whole team and get 1-2 enemies at the same time.
Regen items tend to be better than items that just add health - adding flat health just increases the amount of HP removal his first 3 spells do. I tend to get regen items early and build tanky HP+ items after I've got good reliable regen. Typically I prefer Tranqs -> Urn/Medallion (depending on things like others who have built urn or whether we need fast Rosh) -> Mek/Pipe (again depending on circumstances) -> Shivas/HH -> Heart (only if very late though). I do build Veil, Atos and a few other items but those are far more situational.
I feel treads are too expensive and don't really give Phoenix that much benefit. Tranqs however fit the abilities perfectly (armour and regen >>>> health and AS). That isn't counting the movespeed which is nice given how slow he is. :P Also using the ulti to regen IMO is a bad idea since you want to try and utilise the damage and stun in teamfights/towerpushes. I've typically found the regen in between action a lot more useful than the little bit of extra health - allows me to roam around and be more active early on. Only time I'd build treads is if I was afraid of getting burst down by a Lion or Lina or something.
For typical skill build I tend to aim for 2-4-0-1 and then starting maxing Sun Ray as around then is usually when I start wanting to have it.
Maybe it's just my style of approach works better at my lower level of games haha. Good video though! :P
SKILL BUILD Phoenix: Lvl one you get FS, lvl 2 dive, lvl 3 FS, Lvl 4 DIVE, Lvl 5 FS, Lvl 6 ULT, lvl 7 FS, lvl 8 OPTIONAL Sun ray [1] OR Dive.. ULT > DIVE > Fire spirits > Sun ray
I personally level Sun Ray first, it's really powerful in early game ganks when they don't have boots, so it's harder to outrun. It also has a slow, set turn rate, so it's best used in relatively linear chase situations, like when they're running away.
I started playing support/initiate Phoenix few days ago its super fun! He is my fav hero so far. Easy to learn and the damage is massive!

I was playing nyx against phoenix and i used my spikes couple of times while the phoenix dived...and it actually does not interrupt the dive and stun phoenix mid way, like purge said. Instead, phoenix was not be able to stop the dive and was stunned after the dive was completed, at the starting position.
Purge has correct skill build.. After dive is lvl 2 u can get situational sun ray 1 point OR.. Max dive str8 away after FS is max ofc... Then u get ray..
Always have ult as fast as possible
Purge, I also am not a fan of the current iteration of tranquil boots on Phoenix, but I think a mekanism is a must buy. You can get all the armor you lack, and you always have enough mana to use it.
Why do his spirits say they do 80/100/120/140 attack speed reduction, but when you cast them, regardless of level, they always do -150?
I think Sun Ray does not do YOUR HP as damage/heal, but enemies'/allies'. I might be wrong tho.

Hey Purge. Just a small correction: you said the sun ray scales with phoenix's HP, but it's actually based on the targets % HP. Other than that, great video explaining a fun hero!
I played pheonix once... The KDA was 10/4/20. It's a nice hero. Been playing this hero since the first dota.

yes they can
Similar to Bane, they can see the footsteps/trail of darkness when they have vision of the hero itself. When he goes into the fog, the footsteps/trail of darkness disappears (only the previous visible footsteps are visible).
So you can't just follow his footsteps forever to catch him.
Only the ones they see him create. So if he goes out of vision and they do catch up, there will be a gap between the two trails. They can't see the footsteps he created out of vision, no matter what.
Zedek Does that mean that if I'm looking away, but an ally sees Terrorblade going uphill and I pan my camera to that area, I too see the footprints going uphill? Or only my ally? If I see it as well, that'd be a disadvantage.
Your team sees the track he leaves. It is a disadvantage, but I wouldn't base his position solely on his footprints since any created in fog of war won't become visible no matter what. Depending on the situation, the track he leaves behind can confuse you instead.
Mind you, the footprints only represents his last known position. If he remains out of vision, you'll be unaware of where he went exactly. He could walk over all your jungle, and won't leave a print behind unless you saw him do it.
I was always wondering, would a Vanguard be good on Phoenix. It sounds good to me with that hp and regen as well as the block to add some survivability against right clickers.. but not really sure...
I know for a fact getting a heart later on makes Phoenix amazing.
I played phoenix a lot in dota 1 and my favorite build is mid game carry on mid lane...u buy standard mid lane build with bottle then transition into treads and armlet for dmg/hp/armor and then just rush heart, after that u can go shivas or veil...skills are 4 4 0
I remember when Treant's Ulti still do damage, my friends just wiped the entire enemy team with just Treants and Phoenix's ultis
Maxing Icarus Dive is so bad, it's better to just go stats for a few levels with max Spirits and Sun Ray to make sure you can use your ulti more reliably
Sunbeam's damage is unaffected by phoenixes health, the % health you loose is always the same at all levels but the % health enemies take and heal allies takes increases over the levels
Correct me if I'm wrong (and I might be wrong), but I believe Sun Ray does not do damage based on Phoenix's max HP, but the max HP of the enemy. So if the enemy has 2000 health, a level one Sun Ray would do roughly 20 damage per second (or 1% of the enemy's HP).
You are correct, the values double at the end of the ray tho, I did some maths and worked out that at max level Sunray does 36% of the opponents HP + 270 pure damage
Purge, can you make some tutorial videos for new players? I saw your guide on steam, but it wasn't really deep, so a video for new players would be great!

i think you should make another video of phoenix where you actually use his third ability. its probably his coolest ability and i dont think you used it once.
Purge was fast on getting a vid for Phoenix. Guess he feels more comfortably then he did with earth spirit
Well, comparing the two, ES has a bit more of a higher skill cap. Phoenix has more of a medium, just needing to learn his dive arc and when to cast his ult.
Well, he mentioned playing Phoenix in the past and it being one of its favorite heroes, while Earth Spirit was a new hero he had never played, with some pretty unique abilities. It's not that surprising that it took him more time with Earth Spirit

It removes the silences on their team and gives armour and int. also a force staff is a good counter to silences on their team because you can cast it while silenced (exept from DOOM)
Purge the item set that the Legion Commander had tracks duel victories. That's why it said 222 victories.
Purge you forgot about Windrunner as a counter, simply ult the Phoenix when he ults and you can easily get 7 - 8 hits before it expires getting easily kills, also the ults attack speed can't be reduced.
Supernova seems like the perfect bait to set up a disruptor spell combo.
or reverse polaris, or black hole, or any aeo spell that hold people in place

regen items are really good because no mater how high your Hp is it will always be 15% of your health per skill so a high armor high Hp regen build is what I like to do
I don't agree on Purge's item build. Stick > Tranquil > Urn/Bracer > Shiva > Heart is much better (Situational picks: Force Staff, Pipe, Atos, Necro). Tranquils don't break when you activate ANY of your spells

If you max sun ray and get tranquil in the beggining you can stay back while healing and doing nice damage because tranquil continue healing:) even if you use it
won 1 game, lost one game. I felt like the first game we won the sun ray and ultimate did big damage during teamfights. Sun rays damage bonus scales with your HP (I think) so the higher your hp the more damage. you could easily build carry phoenix with HP items if you go mid with good farm and kills.

Heroes with high attack speed can also counter him well, Windrunner (er, ranger) can counter him well, since her ultimate can be used at range, and cannot be slowed.
Shivas > Veil is arguably (generally) best item combo/pickups on Pheonix. A shame people ignore these underrated items.

Dota 2 Purge plays Blind Phoenix
windranger is the best counter to phoenix. She specs into her ult at 6, and just uses it on him when he goes into the egg. He has no chance, since the egg is based on attacks hit, not damage taken.
One of the worst counters to Phoenix right now is wr. In dota 1 she can't use focus fire on the egg, but in dota 2 she can. She can easily destroy your egg and focus fire will always be up for the next supernova you have.

Hey Purge, Sun Ray DOES NOT have increased damage based on your max hp. It does 4% of the ENEMY'S max HP as damage, like Zeus' passive. The % of Phoenix's max HP is only what it costs to cast the spell.
Another good counter to Pheonix is Windranger and Ursa. The max attack speed tears through the supernova.

I really disagree with a lot of decisions in this video. Mek was already picked up, but it's much better for Phoenix than Rod of Atos is. As you were guessing, 2/4/4 is a lot better than 4/4/0, because Dive really doesn't scale. Also, I think you could have been a lot more aggressive with your ult; diving in with spirits and then immediately ulting in the middle of them works extremely well if your team is at all willing to back you up.
so far everyone that i played with and picked phoenix has fed horribly and with style ( yes i am hinting at that ult )
I played phoenix and thought it was shit. I thought all it's spells were good except for the the ult (pretty much 75% of my deaths), but i didn't think about using the attack speed debuff and THEN ultying. But i did another game and though it can be pretty rough to get the debuff on everyone its a lot better and survived a lot more and turned a teamfight for our team. It's a pretty powerful support but hard to get used to
i am coming to a conclusion that u need a tidehunter/warlock kind of hero on ur team to ease ur life on that ult, otherwise they will either escape or kill u, but maybe i am overreacting , lol,
Also, i havent seen it yet, but windrunner will enjoy killing u

Problem i've seen with most phoenix players is they bust their ulti at the wrong time. If your enemies don't all have fire spirits on them, you're gonna have a bad time...
Rat Dota seems fun with Phoenix...Max Ray after whatever you wanna max first, Tranquils, Necro, and some other item that adds health that isn't necessarily a team fight item. Idk, I havent played Phoenix yet (laptop's derping).

actually sun ray's Max HP damage is your target's Max HP so getting more HP item doesn't affect the ability.

I'd almost always build him 1-2-2-3-2-4-2-3-3-3-1, mostly because dive scales so terribadly.
Personally I'd also argue tranqs are better than treads because of Phoenix' lack of armor and mostly your damage comes from spells which cost % of your hp. Halberd is also, in my opinion core on Phoenix otherwise your ult will be useless against any hero with a decent attackspeed.

I've found that it is fun laning with other tanky heroes like Axe or Wraith King. Wraith King's aura especially helps phoenix's survivability and casting.

cant Agree with the more HP statement, since your ability costs are % health it will take u that much longer to regen and your ulti wont be always up. i feel like armor and healthregen are the way to go so tranquil and a Pipe is what i go for almost every game

No, Phoenix "Egg" count as a ward, meaning only physical hero damage instances can destroy it.

I mostly agree with Purge but I disagree on the whole tranquils thing, I mean treads aren't that usefull and tranquils fills in all phoenix's weak points. I like the tranquills -> mek -> atos build. getting radiance is pretty fun too, not that great tho ;P
If you use Supernova and a Faceless Void uses Chronosphere, will the channel be paused and maintain the area DoT?

Purge, Sunray deals damage/heals based on the target's max HP, not yours. Because of that, and bc of your skills costing a fixed percantage of your max HP, health regen is better for Phoenix than direct HP items.
