OMGosh! I did it! Watched two of your videos on replacing the fill valve and followed your instructions, and, it's done! My husband stood by and watched, then applauded, when the job was done. And he wanted to call a plumber! Thanks so much!
The reason the doggie always follows you into the bathroom is because she's afraid you'll fall in and drown! Lol. She's such a good girl for taking care of you.
As a person who doesn't comment much, I have to give credit where its due. I read the instructions step by step but this video was very informative. Simple tutorial and great usage of the two cameras. You never know who may need the slightest bit of info instead of shelling out hundreds of dollars. Hats off to you sir. Keep up the good work. Thanx
All these years later and this video is still amazing; I was not "confident" that I could change mine until I watched this video! Wrap this man up and I will take two plus Molly~Kindest
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. The extent of my toilet repair history is to remove the lid and say "huh." And promptly put it back on. Now I can say I was able to replace a fill valve all by myself! And you even showed me how I could do a shortcut by using my existing shaft (since I only had a problem in the head) and not even have to drain it completely and do all those other steps. You are awesome and I really appreciate it. My husband was really glad I didn't ask him to do it...ha!
I had a problem with the tank not filling up and had been dreading replacing the entire Fluidmaster fill valve. Thank you so much for the tip about pulling off the old Fluidmaster assembly and just sliding the new one on. What I thought would take about half an hour turned into a one minute repair!
I first initially replaced my old-school toilet valves (3 bathrooms) back in 2000 (bought them at True Value). Then I replaced them all in 2008 (bought them at Home Depot). Now I’ve replaced them all again in 2016. (Bought them at Home Depot again).I too am sold on the fact that the Fluidmaster 400a is my one and only choice for the toilets. Having done a search today on TH-cam for “Fluidmaster 400a replacement” I stumbled on this video. This is so much better than reading the instructions on the unit. This vid was an exceptional refresher for doing a fluidmaster replacement. One other note. I stumbled on other videos showing the replacement of the seal on the unit vs changing the whole unit out. A whole new unit is only 7 dollars and some change at Home Repo vs 3 dollars and change for the seal. I just changed the whole thing. Besides if you change the seal on the old one, it’s still going to be all crusty full of calcium.Time to change the unit: 20 minutesTotal cost: $7.48 plus tax. Thanks a lot for the refresher sir!
Very simple- I'm a 64 year old widow, and have always been the handyman...plumbing was the one thing I shied away from. I am reusing the existing model of this same set, as a temporary measure. It is old and the valve is chewy. I took everything apart and trimmed a bit of too-long hose. I will be completely replacing the entire works asap, since the unit is over 5 years old and the tube is stiff and crimped. I had a slow refill problem, but by taking everything apart and cleaning it, it all seems to work. This is the PERFECT video for exactly how to do it. Just do make sure that your nuts are tight- my hands are not strong, so I used a rubber jar grip to turn that last bit by hand. Thanks so much for a great video!
My 14 yr old just followed your easy video and the toilet is now working properly. Everything on the outside is dry and the inside is working! YAY! Thank you for making this video :)
Success!!! I followed the instructions, ordered the recommended part and now I have a perfectly functioning toilet. Having made this repair, I now understand how to make micro adjustment as they are needed. The inside of my toilet is not longer a mystery to me. The instructions were great! If this 68 year old woman can do this repair, anyone can. Just follow the step by step instructions and demonstration. BTY, it was very nice to have Molly poking her nose into things!
Nathan, this video was a big lifesaver. Instead of paying a handyman, I decided to give a try along with my 14yr old nephew. He took the lead and I help guide him with your simple instructions... We don't think we could of done it without your help/guidance! You just picked up a subscriber and who knows what we dare try next with your help:-) Thanks & God Bless!!!!!!!
Thank you Thank you Thank YOU!!!! I'd been working on my toilet and was fed up trying to figure out why the tank wasn't filling. In the first 4 minutes, your tip of pulling the piece apart in the fill valve to replace a clogged one, I ran to my bathroom and did just that. IT WORKED!!! Oh, thank you so much for saving me so much time and another afternoon of hanging around my toilet. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much- the landlord turned the water off to my buildings for some repairs and when it came back on, the force of the water blew the hose off in the tank. Thanks to you I could reconnect it myself without waiting for and dealing with the landlord!
I'm 64 with no real plumbing experience (except that time I twisted a shower head too tight and snapped the copper pipe in the wall and flooded the wall cavity). I changed out the flappers on 2 constantly running toilets yesterday but they still run. So today, it's Fluidmaster time! Thanks for this video...looks just as easy with your help.
@@AroundTheHome1 Got her done BUT...every 15 minutes or so, the water fills back up some in one toilet. The float is set to the water line but somewhere, water must be leaking out? New flapper, new float. Any idea what to look for next?
Not sure. Sounds like you have your bases covered. If you hit me up on the contact page on my website, when I respond you will be able to send pics. www.aroundthehome.org
Although Fluidmaster has a replacement fill cap, I chose the entire fill valve. My original Fluidmaster was around seven years old. Why not spend the additional $$$. Just made sense. Thanks to your video, it was a 10 minute fix over the existing pipe. You saved me close to $150. Being retired, that is very helpful !!
Wow, what amazing instructions. That increasingly louder droning sound following each flush became history in a matter of minutes. And that is from arguably the least technical guy in the world. Thank you!
Doooood, great video. The little trick replacing the fill valve by popping the locking ring and re-using the already installed post? Awesome. Literally took 90 seconds. Turn off water to toilet, pop ring on old fluidmaster, unclipped overfill hose, pulled off old fill valve, pushed on new fill valve, attached new hose (could have skipped this technically but new hose has a fill rate clamp), locked the ring back onto the post - DONE (minus adjusting the fill level and the bowl fill rate clamp) . Thanks!
You have a great talent for tutoring/Instructing. You did a excellent step by step instruction. Today, I had to replace my flow, and remembered I had bought one of these some time ago without the instructions. You step by step was perfect. Thank you so much, and keep up the great work.
You saved my nerves and sanity, I just fixed the fill valve just by removing the top. I don't have strength in my hands/fingers so screwing things tight don't work with me. You also saved me calling a repair man that would have charged me a ton of $$ just to do what I did. Thank you.
Very helpful. Especially the brute force tip!! Thank you Some additional tips for those who follow #1 If you have a turkey bulb baster, you can suck up the residual water (remember it IS clean) and send it down the toilet drain without worrying about sponging it out. Less drips all around #2 Once the water is gone from the tank, two washcloths on either side of the toilet drain are easier to use than one bulky towel to dry out the tank. #3. A small mirror under the water connector and old fill valve lockscrew will let you mimic the smaller picture in the video.
OMG, I did it. I got the parts from Home Depot, followed the video and in 30 minutes I was done and leak-free. As a woman, I normally don't tackle these types of job, its call a plumber and done but this time I wanted to do it myself and I did. Like you - no fill mark in the tank,...lol so I played with the floater until I got it just below the overflow tube and voila it worked perfectly. This was the absolute best video for doing this particular job! Thank you so much, Mr. Cox, your video was awesome, easy to follow and extremely informative.
That is really great. I'm glad that your project was successful. For many more great videos like this one to help you out don't forget to stop by my website www.greatwhiteninja.com
I have to say it was very easy to install the 400AH. It took me a little over 30 minutes due to the fact I had to clean out the tank. it had some sediment (hence old house). Thanks for your video. Of all the ones I looked at yours was very specific, video was very clear and instructions were great. Thanks!
Thank you Sir! Three years later and this video is as relevant as ever. The short cut made a big difference since I did not have to completely drain the tank.
Glad I just read your reply from two years ago to someone about most of the water coming from the bottom of the valve. I thought mine was cracked or something, and was about to go back to the store to buy a new one. Thanks!!!
I did exactly what you said and fixed it first time without even having to make any adjustments to the water level. You saved me about $60 to $70 on a service call. Thanks for the video.
The best demo of several I’ve watched. I would have purchased a grout sponge if I had seen this first. None of the other demos I’ve seen had the part about separating and reconnecting the lock ring. I am about to get to work! Thank you!
Man you are good and saved me from the plumber fees.( These days he won't make it due to business). Your presentation is excellent ,very clear and communicative. You did not miss a bit. God bless you and your family this thanksgiving and thanks to you I am ready for the family to show up.
This is the video I needed to withdraw the unit without twisting. Even Fluidmaster's own videos do not tell you how to pull out the valve unit without disconnecting the plumbing. My valve unit cannot be rotated as per the website because my so-called plumber (you've got to love a British plumber) fitted it on the same tight corner as the syphon and there is no room to rotate it. Great video from an intelligent plumber.
Your thanking us for watching, I thank you for a top shelf tutorial. Absolutely loved seeing your two dogs inspecting your fine work. All the best from New Rochelle N.Y.
Lifesaver. No one else really went into how to disassemble the valve itself, and that is what I needed to know, since mine got stuck when I tried to adjust it upwards in the tank and water was just spraying everywhere. I didn't know you could just pull the entire top of the stalk off and reseat it. worked like a charm.
Pulling these apart is the best trick ever. And I am making a much better updated video soon. So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org
Hey, I have the same bucket!! Except mine is the all-purple "All-in-One Primer & Sealer". For a long time, I had been dreaming of acquiring a bucket, and of all the things I could do with it, all the things I could carry in it, such as water, fish, mud, soil, sand... I used to have access to lots of buckets, but they would tend to get lost, cracked, or punctured. Then there was the frustration and agony of not finding a bucket when I could really use one. People told me to put it on my bucket-list to get a bucket, but I didn't have a bucket to make a bucket-list with. It then occurred to me that I should claim one of the many empty paint buckets from work. Having a bucket changed my life. Oh, and great video.
Great video ... I just used the first trick ... pulled the old one off the plastic tube and replaced. No tools needed done on about a minute. Thank you !!!
Holy cow!! I had my bucket, wrenches, and sponge ready to go when I heard you say "pop the old one off and stick the new one on." Done in less than 3 minutes!!!!!
Hi Nathan, there is something I would like to share with everyone. When I install the fill valve, I did not attach the little clip to the hose like it suppose to. I place the hose inside the overflow. That will cause the water to flush into the toilet and every five minutes it will cause the tank to fill with water again.......I did follow your instructions with the hose and now my toilet is working fine......Thank you a lot.
This video helped solve the problem of why I couldn't get the black tube out of the grey stem. I just had to push the locking nut back and pull hard! It won't break. Thanks Nathan.
Thank you for this video !!! The level of detail you provided at each step was so helpful !!!! .. From the sponge used, to the bucket , to right tighty - lefty loosey, to changing the Ball style fill valve...!!! You are an amazing teacher !!! I had to use a 1 1/8 " 12 point socket with my ratcheting socket wrench to remove the nut from the old fill valve...my hands were not strong enough to use a wrench or pliers to remove the nut from the old fill valve ...
Thank you so very much in putting up such a detailed video. I"m a senior woman, and this helped me so much in saving money and I learned something new-----Thanks
What an excellent video! I first watched a video made by some New Yorker who sounded like Sylvester Stallone, but it was almost completely worthless. This guy explains important details and helped me overcome a simple problem with adjusting the height of the valve.
Thank you so much for that comment about we don’t have the hose. I have been watching more and more videos seeing if there was one that didn’t have it. Thought I must have the wrong placement. Let’s go and see if I can do it 🤞
Thank you for the video. Only took me a few minutes as I didn't need to take out the hose/bottom seal part. Saved me so much time and stress after seeing how its done.
DUDE!!! Thanx for those hacks!!! Without them I was like a one legged man in an ass kicking contest...just knowing to pull the float assembly off the supply stem saved me HOURS of that cussin', crampin' & cleanup....Thank you so very much!!! Under normal (pre-stroke) conditions, I wouldda had it done without consulting your vid...at least the stroke was good for something...your quick work hacks...no leaks or major cleanup except for the much needed floor cleaning which clearing out all the detritus that accumulated over the past number of months/years around the commode made easier... CB in FL
Omg, I can't thank you enough! I put it off and put it off, but once I saw your video and went for it, everything worked out in the end. Getting that NUT off was a beast but you gave awesome advice. All the best 2u in 2021! :)
WOW, I've never fixed a toilet so fast. I only had to replace the float. Did what you said, pulled the old off and slid on the new and locked in place. I'm definitely subscribing to your channel.
Thank you so much for the tip about pulling the entire upper assembly off. after following your advice it works perfectly saved me from a plumbing nightmare as I'm a little Closterphobic.
You're a life saver man. The leaky toilet in my daughter's bathroom has been bugging me for awhile and thanks to you, it's fixed. I really appreciate your time and extremely detail step since I'm no handy man so I needed every detail step.
thanks! this is the model I bought and then searched for a video to show me how to install it. I was quite happy to see the same model I bought used in the video. Your video was very clear and so so helpful. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this video. It was easier to replace just the top part of the Fluidmaster than what I was trying to do - disconnect the whole unit. That locknut under the tank was impossible to loosen. Thanks again.
...your puppy is so cute...my 15 year old pittie mix is insisting on crowding his daddy as he struggles with his right hand doing what his left should but can't do...glad I watched your vid twice...got the float off...simply cannot access OR work on the valve system under the bowl...your hack is a cussin', crampin' & cleanup saver!!! using your camera on your cell phone prior to doing the work gives you the reference you need...
Yeah Man! I was wondering about how the main filler tube worked. I pulled my new one apart to see what was inside. Now I know where my old one is leaking. Putting a new seal in the shut off valve helped a bit but the thing just kept running once water was a top of drain tube. Shut off was working but water still kept coming in slowly and draining through the over flow drain tube. Really bugged me! Thanks for showing all that detail! Don't know why the old one kept running for sure but now I understand how it could if the internal seal of the filler tube was damaged or clogged..
Awesome video - thanks so much for the secret about removing and replacing just the valve and not the whole tube - saved me a lot of time! Wish I had known about that for last 20 years!
Thanks for the tip about replacing the top piece. I replaced mine, which groaned like a dying water buffalo, without any tools or even shutting off the water supply!
Great tip to leave the 'Stem' in place, mine were going to be tricky to replace (they were metal fittings and ancient), but this trick made the job 5 minutes =). My toilet uses rain-water & mains, so actually has 2 of these units to replace.
Exceptional Video Sir! Thank You for taking the “Intimidation Factor” away! I’m feeling more confident I can do this without borrowing one of my male buddies to repair it for me!
Around The Home The Video was great! My Roadblock was that I could not get that damn plastic bolt off with the Channel Locks! I struggled with it for over an hour and finally at just about 9 PM, I texted my neighbour and asked if I could borrow him and his muscles. Lol The adjuster for the water level also did not seem to allow us to set the water level to a height just below the cylindrical column. Everything is functioning properly now and water level seems sufficient upon flushing. I was so impressed with your Video that I subscribed and will share with my girlfriends. P.S. Your Wife or Girlfriend is a Lucky Lady! 😜You’re easy on the eyes! Lol
awesome, thank you, watched, went to homedepot, got the part, came back, installed it, and watched the end of the video again to make sure i didnt miss anything, took about 10 minuets with cleanup and all, yay!, fwiw, im the one that just touches plumbing parts and water will leak, so far so good!, no leaks and works perfectly, yay, yay, yay!
Just used this video to replace my fill valve and it was perfect! Probably saved me $200. If you had a donation page I would totally donate. Thank you!!
Glad that I could help. If you want to donate there is a support button on the main page of the channel. Also sharing this video and channel helps out.
Just did my 400A successfully. The boxed instructions are very confusing. In step 2 it says "DO NOT MOVE LOCK RING it holds the body and shank together." As you pointed out "moving" that lock ring is necessary to adjust the core. You popped the ring easily however I had to grapple with mine since it was REAL TIGHT. It also says that 8 turns on the float screw represent one half inch in water level and I found that I could get one half inch in about 5 turns. My toilet now fills quicker and sounds operationally healthier. Bought mine at Home Depot for $7.48 plus tax. Some universal valves come in blister packs but I love the easy to access cardboard box. I would have paid $19.99 for Kohler's OEM valve online so I am very happy. I have a K4634 toilet with no flapper so mine may be newer than the toilet in your video. My model number was inside the tank however it was not where Kohler said it would be and it was stenciled and not carved in the china as they also said it would be. No leaks at all!! Thanks for the video TH-cam is the best but it is the people who make that way.
Perfect! Good tips on the sponge (we used a couple of shammies) and on how the stem separates from the rest of the unit. Also the directions on the hand tightening. Great video!
I used the trick of separating the tube from the valve and had a new supply line and the FluidMaster in the toilet in about 10 minutes. I wish I had watched this video first! The old fill valve broke into pieces because the nut to the supply line had been forced on and was crooked. It took my husband and me three days on and off (until we got so frustrated, we set it aside) to get the supply line separated from the remnants of the old FluidMaster.
Thank YOU!!! My very FIRST time trying to replace the fluid master!-Your clear/concise and detailed information ( and the tricks ) made it possible for me to succeed! I’ve subscribed so I can learn even more from you! I also appreciate how you made sure the view of the inside of the tank was lighted and seen from your camera mounted above. Thank goodness for the pause button and rewind! Finally ..love your dog checking your progress! (My 2 cats did the same but offered no advice 😆) Aloha from a grateful senior girl in Honolulu🌴🌴🌴
I watched to see how to adjust the water level as I replaced all the parts including the water valve on the wall and I see that the water level is a bit low. I wish you brought the camera in for a close up and show how to raise the water level. I think you said to go CCW to raise the water but I can't remember
I do the water level adjustment at 17:35. If you need to make the water level higher then you should be able to use the screw to raise the float. If you can not raise it high enough with the float then you need to raise the height of the stem. You can do that by either releasing the ring and lifting the stem a notch or two, or by twisting the top part. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to stop by our website www.greatwhiteninja.com
Great video. That dog of yours is soo cute, and curious. He didn't want to miss even a single bit of your instructions. He studied the valve you placed into the bathtub so intently, that I'm sure he now knows exactly how it works.😂🤣. I was a bit disappointed that after the installation, you didn't at least flush once to demonstrate how it is supposed to work when properly installed!
You know, I didn't even think of that. I might have to update that video. Thanks for watching and don't forget to stop by our website for many more helpful videos. www.greatwhiteninja.com
Well done video. Followed your instructions...worked. like other comments here, the leaflet instructions were okay, but not great. Your video did a great job of filling a lot of gaps. disassembling the valve stem from the float saves a lot of hearartache. in my case to determine the level I looked at the fill Mark in the tank as well as did a comparison adjust to my old discard fill valve. again saved a lot of heartache. Went from stock Hydroclean EZ to Fluidmaster 400CAR3. No drama. Thanks again.
for the fucking life of me i can not figure out what that tube is for that goes from the filler directly down the overflow tube it makes no gad damn sense at all to me how do you ill up the tank if all the water is just going down the drain ,down the overflow? my toilet is a toto and it does not have that tube at all ,there is no tube of any kind going into my overflow at all , on the filler there is a spout that the water sprays out of on top of the floater mechanism ,then there is a a connector on the filler that looks like you could connect that tube to it but it is unused and no water ever comes out of there, the water just comes out of the filler and goes into the tank which makes perfect sense to me having a hose that just wastes all the water by dumping it down overflow makes no sense if all the water is going down the overflow then how does the damn tank ever fill up? if some of it goes down the overflow then it is still wasting water , it makes no damn sense ,any excess water would just go down the overflow anyways right? why does my toilet not have this why is it even needed it seems to have no purpose other than wasting water and making utility companies richer it obviously can not be needed or serve any purpose since my toilet does not even have one
I am going to try and help explain that one. First of all there is no conspiracy between the utility companies and Fluidmaster. The filler tube that goes down the overflow is not wasted water. Most of the water fills from the base of the fill valve, but some does go down the overflow. The overflow goes directly into the bowl of the toilet. So it helps to bring the bowl water level back up. Without it, the bowl would have too little water after a flush. As far as yours not having an overflow, I have a hard time believing that a toilet company decided to leave that out. If your fill valve stuck and kept filling, it would overflow all over your bathroom floor. With the overflow going into the bowl, well as long as the toilet is not clogged up, the bowl will self regulate the height of the water. If too much goes in it just flushes. Some toilets have a flushing tower instead of a flapper and the overflow is in the center of the flush tower. I have seen that with Kohler brands mostly. The Totos that I am familiar with just have a 3" flapper and an overflow tube...
Nathan Cox ok thanks i understand what it is for now thanks , no you misunderstood me ,of course my toilet has an overflow column ,but it does not have the little tube that goes from the filler into the overflow , that little black tube, there is a place to connect one but it;s not here and no water comes out of the place where the tube would connect, i have read that the type of filler that toto uses is prone to break frequently i read some advice online from a plumber that said do not replace it with the sam etot part just use a cheaper fluidmaster 400a instead it is less than half the cost and it will last much longer he said the toto filler wont last 2 years because the smallest bit of debris can get in there and break it ,so my question is this ,if replace the totot filler with the fluidmaster ,then can i hook it up the same way,ie without the extra tube going from the filler to the overflow column? my toilet does not have it now and my bowls water level is just fine without it, ,now if i buy the fluidmaster then is there a way to make it not output water from that tube or i can just position it so it squirts into the tank instead of down the overflow into the bowl ,or will i have to use it because it is a different filler? i will post you a quick photo of the inside of my tank so you can see what i mean
ok here is the pic on my tank s14.postimg.org/yp26jnkm9/IMG_20161105_164008_1.jpg you think if i go with the fluidmaster instead of the toto filler i can hook it up the same way and have it function the same, no tube going into the overflow i mean, right now the water level in the bowl is good i don;t want it any higher
If you are saying that the fill valve does not stop filling and the water just goes over the overflow, then yes. It is possible that the fill valve is set too high and that's why it is going over, but it sounds more like it just isn't shutting off. Here is a slightly newer video that might help more. I need to make a completely updated one though. th-cam.com/video/KLvoFsE3NP0/w-d-xo.html
Any suggestions for doing this on a 1-piece toilet? I have no access to the feed line (other than to turn it off) or the point where the Fluidmaster valve sits in the tank? It looks like all I can do is replace the top half (float portion). I'm glad I watched the video to know that is an option.
I have on a Toto 1 piece, but the fill valve installed the same way. Honestly I have very little experience with 1 piece toilets, so I have not seen many variations. Do you know the brand and model by chance?
@@AroundTheHome1 It's a Kohler, I think it's model K-3564, it's about 8 years old. Very little room in the tank to get my hands in there. I'll be calling Kohler in the morning. Thanks again for an informative video.
I looked up that model. Wow, it looks like you actually have to pull the whole toilet up to get to those parts. I guess that's what you sacrifice to have that ultra clean look.
@@AroundTheHome1 Good news - I was able to complete my repair! It involved removing the center flush valve (easy-release clips once I found them) so there was room to work, and then cutting out the top half of the old fill valve to get to the lock ring, removed that, and installed the new 400A top half only. Lesson learned - pretty toilets are a PITA ;-) Thanks again.
Thanks for the vid. I replaced just the top mechanism as you talked about in the shortcut. I was finished before I was the rest of the vid. Super easy. Awesome!
Followed the video, installed the fluidmaster in a matter of a few minutes . Installation went just like you said in the video. Well done. And the tip about exercising the valve length adjustment first and then pre-setting the valve height was brilliant. Thanks again
Appreciate your tutorial. Wanted to come back after my installation and say thank you. Prepping it by pulling off top assembly made the install easier.
You are very welcome. Glad I could help. Thanks for watching and don't forget to stop by our website for many more helpful videos. www.greatwhiteninja.com
OMG MAN THANK YOU SO MUCH.. u made it look so easy and i was struggling, first it was hell trying get the old one off and noone said take that lil cap off where the old tube was.. ugh.. u a life safer.
Thank you for the video. I came tp the web with a question about the Fluidmaster 400A fill valve and found this video. Not only did this video answer my question, it also made several valuable suggestions. Made the fill valve installation much easier. Thank you. 10+
Thanks Dude, I pretty much knew what my toilet issue was, but this clarified everything! Great job on the production/split screen, just wish I hadn't have left all my tools at another job. Keep up the good work and all the best!
This video is one of the best instructional videos I've seen! I was ready to take my whole toilet out. "Pop this top off" save me. Took me 20 secs! Thanks brother!
Hi, thanks so much for your videos. Both are very helpful! I just installed mine. It seems to work but I am confused by the refill tube with a clip. You said that it should be clipped so that the water goes into the overflow tube. My understanding is that it is the source of water into the tank. It should release the water into the tank instead of into the overflow tube, which prevents flooding if somehow the water fails to stop. In your other video, you said it is OK to clip it the other way so that the water goes int the tank. Could you explain the purpose of the refill tube? Thank you!
Julie, thanks for your question. You are right about the purpose of the overflow tube. It is designed to relieve water from the tank if it continues to fill past it's set level. It does this by draining into the bowl, which when it gets full enough it will flush. So, as long as the toilet is not clogged, this works beautifully. The black tube on the Fluidmaster fill valve goes into the overflow tube to help fill the bowl. It just adds a little water. The tank fills from the base of the fill valve stem. The reason I say that you can turn the tube so that it adds to the tank instead is because I had an argument with a viewer about that. They did not care that it is designed to go down the overflow tube to add to the bowl water, because they insisted that it was wasting water. Forget the fact that the bowl has to reach a certain water level to flush and if you keep water from the bowl, then you have to drain more water from the tank to make it flush. Or, if you have the tank set low to try and save water then the toilet will not properly flush at all. There is a certain amount of water required to make a toilet flush, and with the low GPF ( gallons per flush ) water tanks in the US today it is barely enough to get your waste all of the way out of your drain pipes and to the street main. So, in short, I can't waste my time arguing with people that don't understand the mechanical arts, but assume they know more then I do. I hope this answers your question on the tube, and gives you more info then you ever wanted to know about toilets. Glad to help. Thank you for watching, and please share. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org/
@@AroundTheHome1 Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. The toilet system looks simple but it has a lot of science behind it. The instruction was clear but without explanation, this seemingly counter-intuitive placement trips people up. So grateful that people who actually knows are taking the time to help others. Great job!
I'm 65 years old and just changed out my first fill valve! You never know what you can't do until you try. Thanks for your help!
Awesome, glad to help.
OMGosh! I did it! Watched two of your videos on replacing the fill valve and followed your instructions, and, it's done! My husband stood by and watched, then applauded, when the job was done. And he wanted to call a plumber! Thanks so much!
That's awesome. Glad that I could help.
Thanx
Thank you. Really glad that I was able to help.

No problem. Glad that I could help. For more great videos check out my website www.greatwhiteninja.com
A whole new
unit is only 7 dollars and some change at Home Repo vs 3 dollars and change for the seal.
Glad that I could help.
You are very welcome. Don't forget to check out my website www.greatwhiteninja.com for more videos on everything.
Awesome! Glad that I could help.
Thank you so much- the landlord turned the water off to my buildings for some repairs and when it came back on, the force of the water blew the hose off in the tank. Thanks to you I could reconnect it myself without waiting for and dealing with the landlord!
That's great. For more videos like that check out my website, www.greatwhiteninja.com
Good luck with your project. Here is a newer video on that. th-cam.com/video/KLvoFsE3NP0/w-d-xo.html
That is great! Glad to help.
Omg I love the trick of pulling the part off and replacing it!!! I’ve been living with a bad part too long for a 1 minute fix!!! Thank you so much!!

Theresa. Did you have to cut off the water supply line?
Wow, what amazing instructions. That increasingly louder droning sound following each flush became history in a matter of minutes. And that is from arguably the least technical guy in the world. Thank you!

@@AroundTheHome1, done! Thanks again.

Thanks, glad that I could help.
You saved my nerves and sanity, I just fixed the fill valve just by removing the top. I don't have strength in my hands/fingers so screwing things tight don't work with me. You also saved me calling a repair man that would have charged me a ton of $$ just to do what I did. Thank you.
That's awesome! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org
Very helpful. Especially the brute force tip!! Thank you
Some additional tips for those who follow
#1 If you have a turkey bulb baster, you can suck up the residual water (remember it IS clean) and send it down the toilet drain without worrying about sponging it out. Less drips all around
#2 Once the water is gone from the tank, two washcloths on either side of the toilet drain are easier to use than one bulky towel to dry out the tank.
#3. A small mirror under the water connector and old fill valve lockscrew will let you mimic the smaller picture in the video.
Thanks for the tips. So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org

I have to say it was very easy to install the 400AH. It took me a little over 30 minutes due to the fact I had to clean out the tank. it had some sediment (hence old house). Thanks for your video. Of all the ones I looked at yours was very specific, video was very clear and instructions were great.
Thanks!

Thank you and glad to help. This is a very old video of mine and needs some updating, but it still gets the job done.
Your thanking us for watching, I thank you for a top shelf tutorial. Absolutely loved seeing your two dogs inspecting your fine work. All the best from New Rochelle N.Y.
You are so welcome! I do appreciate the view too.
Agree, Stewart. In case you ever see this. :)
Ok buckethead LOL, good one!

Thanks for the comment. It is funny how that little piece keeps it from siphoning.
This video helped solve the problem of why I couldn't get the black tube out of the grey stem. I just had to push the locking nut back and pull hard! It won't break. Thanks Nathan.

The Video was great! Lol

Done! Happy holidays!

Awesome, glad to help.

That's awesome. Glad I could help.

He didn't want to miss even a single bit of your instructions.
He studied the valve you placed into the bathtub so intently, that I'm sure he now knows exactly how it works.😂🤣.

Glad I could help.
for the fucking life of me i can not figure out what that tube is for that goes from the filler directly down the overflow tube it makes no gad damn sense at all to me how do you ill up the tank if all the water is just going down the drain ,down the overflow? my toilet is a toto and it does not have that tube at all ,there is no tube of any kind going into my overflow at all , on the filler there is a spout that the water sprays out of on top of the floater mechanism ,then there is a a connector on the filler that looks like you could connect that tube to it but it is unused and no water ever comes out of there, the water just comes out of the filler and goes into the tank which makes perfect sense to me having a hose that just wastes all the water by dumping it down overflow makes no sense if all the water is going down the overflow then how does the damn tank ever fill up? if some of it goes down the overflow then it is still wasting water , it makes no damn sense ,any excess water would just go down the overflow anyways right? why does my toilet not have this why is it even needed it seems to have no purpose other than wasting water and making utility companies richer
it obviously can not be needed or serve any purpose since my toilet does not even have one
Nathan Cox ok thanks i understand what it is for now thanks , no you misunderstood me ,of course my toilet has an overflow column ,but it does not have the little tube that goes from the filler into the overflow , that little black tube, there is a place to connect one but it;s not here and no water comes out of the place where the tube would connect, i have read that the type of filler that toto uses is prone to break frequently i read some advice online from a plumber that said do not replace it with the sam etot part just use a cheaper fluidmaster 400a instead it is less than half the cost and it will last much longer he said the toto filler wont last 2 years because the smallest bit of debris can get in there and break it ,so my question is this ,if replace the totot filler with the fluidmaster ,then can i hook it up the same way,ie without the extra tube going from the filler to the overflow column?
my toilet does not have it now and my bowls water level is just fine without it, ,now if i buy the fluidmaster then is there a way to make it not output water from that tube or i can just position it so it squirts into the tank instead of down the overflow into the bowl ,or will i have to use it because it is a different filler? i will post you a quick photo of the inside of my tank so you can see what i mean
ok here is the pic on my tank

you think if i go with the fluidmaster instead of the toto filler i can hook it up the same way and have it function the same, no tube going into the overflow i mean, right now the water level in the bowl is good i don;t want it any higher
If the water flows over top of the overflow tube, does that mean the fill valve needs to be replaced?
If you are saying that the fill valve does not stop filling and the water just goes over the overflow, then yes. It is possible that the fill valve is set too high and that's why it is going over, but it sounds more like it just isn't shutting off. Here is a slightly newer video that might help more. I need to make a completely updated one though. th-cam.com/video/KLvoFsE3NP0/w-d-xo.html
Great demo video, well done. I love your dogs. They are just as passionate about toilet repairs as you are 😍
Thank you very much!

Thanks again

thanks man. $8 at home Depot and your video fixed my problem.
Glad that I could help.

Thanks, glad that I could help.

Great job!
@Julie Wonder, you are welcome. Hopefully this helps you with your project.
