Beautiful, professional looking and strong, what's not to like?! I made a keel guard for my Max 10 using old school fiberglass mat. Doesn't look so great but its super strong and will never come off. If I had to do it again however, I'm doing your version, looks better and easier to install.
I made one with fiberglass for my royalex canoe. I don’t drag it,It was grinding trough from course sand beaches mostly. I was seeing the closed cell-foam in a small spot before Id even noticed. When the fiberglass started getting sanded through, I got some carbon fiber from a friend who makes prosthetics.& just added on top. It’s done ok but it’s doing the same thing, started popping up in Spots . It looks like this is a good way to go. I am into guns and was planning to buy some to build a holster that’s like nothing else on the market anyway. Will get a few extra sheets . I’m going to be fixing gunnels & doing some other preventive maintenance ,repairs and upgrades all over the boat. Inside & out. All sorts of things & different materials in mind , but this is looking like the best alternative for bows and sterns . Going to go ahead and do the same for a loon 138. No problems with that one yet .thanks. I do a lot of salt water .maybe harder grit from fossils and coming In hotter sometimes. Will see how it goes. It’s going to be better & it’s time. Have to look into that goop. Should be fine. Thx

Thanks for another great video. I’m going to do the same. The only 2 things that I will do different are lightly trace the cut and molded piece onto the kayak and smear a thin layer of the goop on the kayak itself just to ensure the best possible adhesion.

Wendel, I have the SS127 , Two years in and I've noticed this keel guard would be a nice addition . I'm VERY rough on my equipment and I believe this type of guard would also serve well on the front area of the pontoon sections because they too take some major abuse. Love the videos! My only request to improve your content is to normalize or lower volume on machines when using them. Like during the orbital sander in this one. Otherwise I'm looking forward to doing this new keelguard when I get my kayak. Thanks for your content!
Thanks for the feedback Jage. You always have to reserve the right to get better so I appreciate you sharing. You wouldn't have if you didn't care. Let me know how that keel guard comes out.
Great video. Just curious why you chose Marine Goop over an marine epoxy? Seems like marine epoxy would have a stronger bond. I put Gator Guard Keel protector on the bow of the kayak and it came off after the second outing, dragging the kayak over rocks in the river.
I bought your video and just watched some Kydex from Scamazon. I don't drag my yak b/c it's fairly light plus I just bought new wheels for my car. I was kinda new to old stuff but really like this news video for old times sake. Plus after the divorce my dad said don't trust my mom while my mom said trust your dad at your own demise. I'm 50% of both so I'm now at 0% of trust in self. With this knowledge of being 100% of zero, I thought I'd drown myself in the water until seeing your video. I have since bought a kayak just to make a couple'a keel guards. Now I've decided that I'll die on the water and not in it! You'da You'da best! Update: I am now a raisin of a man, all dried up under the sun, being pecked apart by birds while laying lame on an unsinkable kayak. I would've rather been fish food. If only my keel had some leakage, if only.....
This may be silly question...with that kydex gaurd on solid...if the kydex gets holes over time, will it still protect kayak from holes?? I think it would but with my luck, i would spring a leak and have to try to get kydex off... Im just debating doing kydex or welding on extra plastic as gaurd. My current kayak is mod-ed to bone so dont want to give er up! But she has hole on spot that your video is showing. Thanks for taking time to do these videos!! Great job.
Thank you for this video, and when the KYDEX is damaged and I have to change it, is it easy to remove it with that direct glue? I just finished making my Keel molds thanks to your video but now I don't know whether to use double contact tape or direct glue...
@@wendellfishing I already managed to glue my kayak keel directly with the glue you recommend, definitely better than with double contact tape, thanks for the recommendation...
Perfect. Im going to make a set. I looked up a keel guard for my moken 12.5, it was almost 60 bucks and people in the reviews hated it. The scratches i already have on my kayak just mean better adhesion, right? 😂
I've had my P127 for two years. I'm finally getting around to installing the keel guard. I've noticed that the two smaller keels that are further back are getting beat up more than the center one. Have you noticed this with yours? Have you considered covering those at some point?
Thank-you: Derek you did the research and I saw that the first one did take a beating and led to a crack. Why not use PVC instead of the Kydex? My kayak will sit in a sub zero garage over winter. I found 3mm sheets, about 25% thicker, too thick?
I think in your first video you used two sided tape. It appeared that it was easy to remove years later if you wanted to replace the kydex. Do you think this version with the goop will be easy to remove if you need to replace your guard?
I used the 60 lbs gorilla tape on my river kayak last year and it’s holding up great. I recently bought a new old town pdl. I’m going to put a kydex keel gaurd on the front and back. Not sure how I want to apply it yet. I have the same question as TwoBuck Chuck. I’m wondering which one will be easier to replace down the road. Scraping double sided tape off, or trying to removing marine goop. both will be a small job but with the right tools I’m sure both can be done fairly easy. I’ve seen and read about countless people applying keel guards both ways. Ive done my own research but haven’t found anything to sway me one way or the other. Wendal was there a reason you switched up your adhesive process on the keel gaurd install?
Hey TwoBuck Chuck.... According to GOOP Central (1-800-693-GOOP or 1-800-767-GOOP), there are three recommended solvents for GOOP. They are acetone, toluene and naphtha. Acetone will do a good job on GOOP that has not fully set. Toluene is a more powerful solvent that will remove fully set GOOP.

Hi Fantastic video!! Thank you for showing us a great way to protect our Kayak! I do have a question though! On my kayak I had put two coats of black bedliner coating on my keel. I was wondering, could I get some Kydex and follow your video with every step. Could I put the Kydex right over the coating that I put down underneath it with the Kydex overlapping the coating I put on? Thank you!
Hey man, great video. I noticed you posted this a yr ago. So, how has it held up? Either way, im going with it. What they charging for "keel guard tape" is ridiculous.
Thoughts on using .06” v.s. .08” thick KYDEX? Would the .06” provide sufficient durability? Easier to heat/form? Less of a protruding edge to improve water resistance?
I watched your old video on it, and just found this one, I WILL be doing this on mine, also what is the wheels you have on your old kayak?, I have been trying to find some for mine
Hey ITB, The wheel system I have are Native Sidekicks... they are pricey... but one of those things I use ALL THE TIME! Beats the crap out of a kayak cart.
On the instructions on the back of the package it says "not recommended to be used on polyethylene, and several other plastics. I have my kydex formed and the marine glue ready. Any issues you have had or heard about on kayaks? Just wondering.
Hey Ron, to my understanding, and I found this online is "There are no glues that glue polyethylene, nothing on the market makes a chemical bond. So, your left with products that fill gaps, and provide a compression seal, which is what you will be doing. Goop and 3m's 5200 do a good job at this. But keep in mind, that they do not actually glue to the poly, so timely inspections and occasional maintenance need to be done.
Hey I noticed that they have thicker Kydex like 0.093" Would I be better off around my area i have nothing but rocks where I launch and the bottom of my yak is taking a beating
@@wendellfishingwell i was gunna ask how its going since i just purchased my first fishing kayak and im planning a massive upgrades and saw this and was like yeah thats a good idea with duck lake being pretty rough on boats and assuming everything else. gunna add you to my sub list thankyou
What are your thoughts on just using a spray on bed liner for a keel guard? Or a combination of both the kydex and goop then spray the bed liner over the kydex ?
Hey, so… it’s been a year. How’s it holding up? Do you like the original or the 2.0 version better? Also…. How are you not melting your kayak while your heating up the kydex?
Great video, and great timing! I used your first video for inspiration for mine, got it done in a couple hours about a week ago. I also used Kydex, but used JB Weld ClearWeld to adhere to the hull. Haven't tested it yet, because the NorCal rain just won't stop, but soon.
@@wendellfishing just found this video again - looking for a new solution. The JB Weld failed, haha. I think it doesn't like saltwater, and didn't bond that well to HDPE. No big, at least my keel guard pieces are still shaped just right, gonna try the Marine GOOP you used. How yours holding up?
Followed your 2 Kydex keel guard videos to do my yak. Went like a charm. Did the thermoform twice, just to get a little better of a fit. Thanks for the info.
HECK YEAH Thomas! Thanks for letting me know. Glad it worked out for you. Now you can drag your kayak down the boat ramp grater with not a worry in the world!
I live in Utah and right now is very cold. I made the mistake of buying my dream kayak, the vibe shearwater 125 while checking if I could qualify for monthly payments. Long story short, the accidental kayak came in on saturday and I dont have the storage to put it until the spring. So I was thinking on mods to do, and I gotta say, that I love your keel guard idea. To this day, is it still holding in place?
That's what i wanted to hear! I tried the tape thing without looking into it first. It was an idea that popped in my head at the last min. Held up until i unloaded it!! I'm purchasing the kydex as we speak. Thanks for the video and idea. @wendellfishing
I have a Coleman canoe made out of that HDPE and nothing bonds to it. I have plastic welded cracks where the plastic has worn thin due to dragging (It's a duck hunting canoe) this would work great to gaurd the cracks. Did the goop keep it on? I'd be worried it would get knocked off.
The only other thing I could think of is a Hair Dryer to soften the Kydex. The problem is that Hair Dryers heat between 80 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Optimum Kydex molding begins at 330 - 350°F. People will soften the kydex in ovens and then form but there are all kinds of problems I see doing that.
Get a toaster oven from a thrift. Used one for holster making and the slower, even heating makes Kydex very easy to work with. Properly heated it is like wet leather👍🏻 There’s also the plumber’s trick of a bucket or can of hot sand, you can put over a campstove or portable burner. Basic is that you don’t want these fumes anywhere near food, so stay out of the kitchen😂 th-cam.com/users/shortswpfpBg0DBVk?feature=share
@wendellfishg what problems do you see using an oven to heat the product? Also, would love to see you do a video of removing the product applied with Goop to see how it would be to replace this product.
I put stripes of kydex on the front and back keels. For some of the pieces, I put the tape on it and then heated up in the oven. Placed it directly on it.
How someone can think tape, or something like Flex Seal (I've seen people use that) will hold up to even the lightest abuse is baffling. Mine is starting to get a little beat up after using it very regularly last year. I need to do this. I also want to cover up the wheel skeg it has with a solid piece. I think this will do nicely for that.
I’m curious how this is holding up. In my opinion, 3M 5200 is the best marine adhesive and sealant available. Thinking of doing this to my kayak and will most likely use the 5200 so it will not only bond the keel guard on but I can also use the squeeze out to seal and fair the edges. Great video, I had never thought of using kydex and I have plenty of it for use on other projects.
I've watched countless videos like you have and this is by far the way to go. I bought my first fishing kayak last year and after taking it out just one time I learned quick, need a keel guard lol... Is there a preferred thickness for the kydex?for the videos

@@wendellfishing Thank you for the response and information. I'll install it today and try the Goop out.
@@roncadenhead9650 I have had it on all season with no problem. Anytime
So how is it holding up after 11 months? I'm definitely needing to get someone like that.
My second season with no issues so far
Wendell how is goop holding up on your keel guard you made...
Haven’t thought about it since I put it on last season
Hey I noticed that they have thicker Kydex like 0.093" Would I be better off around my area i have nothing but rocks where I launch and the bottom of my yak is taking a beating
Makes sense to me!
Great video!! How is this Goop holding up as compared to the Gorilla Tape?
Both holding up the same! I prefer the goop though.. much easier ... and cheaper
Great video. How did it hold up? I’m planning to do the same based on your reply. Thanks in advance.
So far so good!
@@wendellfishingwell i was gunna ask how its going since i just purchased my first fishing kayak and im planning a massive upgrades and saw this and was like yeah thats a good idea with duck lake being pretty rough on boats and assuming everything else.
gunna add you to my sub list thankyou
@@stevewasdf Thanks boss!
Hey I was just wondering how’s it holding up for you
Not a single issue since I put it on
How is it working out? Is it holding up well?
2nd season no issue!
I am glad you made this tutorial. I followed your instructions andmade a very nice keel guard for my hobie lynx. Thank you So much!
Glad it helped!
What are your thoughts on just using a spray on bed liner for a keel guard? Or a combination of both the kydex and goop then spray the bed liner over the kydex ?
IMO the bed liner will just scratch off
When it comes to glue adhesion, would you prefer version one or version two?
Goop was much easier than the tape... they both are holding up like a boss
Is it still working thinking about doing that to my kayak
No issues since I put it on
Once you used the goop, did it stay , or did you use the heat gun again for it to mold onto the keel?
Once I used the goop.. it cured in 24 hours. No need to use the heat gun again!
Hello! I have a fibreglass kayak and am wondering can I do this method? Will the heat gun mess up with the fibreglass in my yak?
I couldn't answer that for you. Never tried
Not to critique at all because awesome video but you couldve folded the paper the other way and cut both sides with one cut. But. Gonna do this asap
Right on boss!
How is 2.0 holding up? I actually had 1.0 at my first kayak. Now I got a new one, want to try your 2.0.
Exactly what I did. It's holding up great. I still have both on them with no issues. In fact, 2.0 was cheaper and much easier.
@@wendellfishing I had to ask. How do you plan on removing the goop when you need to replace the keel guard?
@@SpotlockBros Toluene or Goof Off has Toluene in it
Well here it is a year later, hows it holding up?
havent thought about it since i put it on!
How long did you let the goop dry for before use? Thanks ahead of time.
24 hours
How about painting the bow with epoxy?
Never tried it so I can't really comment
Hey, so… it’s been a year. How’s it holding up? Do you like the original or the 2.0 version better? Also…. How are you not melting your kayak while your heating up the kydex?
2.0 is not only better but easier and cheaper!
Great video, and great timing! I used your first video for inspiration for mine, got it done in a couple hours about a week ago. I also used Kydex, but used JB Weld ClearWeld to adhere to the hull. Haven't tested it yet, because the NorCal rain just won't stop, but soon.
Right on.. that stuff is solid... you will be good to go!
No issues with the marine goop after a season of beating it up! @@kevinsteineke7454
@@wendellfishingsweet gonna try that this time. Thanks!
I used 3m hvb double sided tape. It will not come off.
Right on!
Once the goop is cured can you remouve the keelgurd and the goop somehow ? like if you want to put on a new one ?
There are three recommended solvents for GOOP. They are acetone, toluene and naphtha
@@wendellfishing thanks! And none of them degrade the plastic of the yak right ?
No Issues on my end

I trusted your vid to protect my yak!
I mean, it hasnt been quite a year yet, but hows it holding up? 😅

So it hasnt been quite a year yet... but how did the glue hold up? Lol

Still holding up.. no issues
Is it still holding up and was yours the 0.60 or 0.90 kydex thickness
Holding up still with no issues. I believe the smaller
So how did it hold up???
No Issues!
That's what i wanted to hear! I tried the tape thing without looking into it first. It was an idea that popped in my head at the last min. Held up until i unloaded it!! I'm purchasing the kydex as we speak. Thanks for the video and idea. @wendellfishing
Hey there, would this work with a torch instead of a heat gun?
I believe it could work.. but the torch is direct heat so I would imagine that you would have to keep it pretty far away. Would be tough to regulate
@@wendellfishing Yes exactly what I was thinking. I'm better off Snaggin the ole heat gun from work I guess.
@@wendellfishing Thank you.
@@OntarioWoodlandAdventures :)
What is the thickness on the kydex?
0.080" but you could go thicker: geni.us/Kydex
I have a Coleman canoe made out of that HDPE and nothing bonds to it. I have plastic welded cracks where the plastic has worn thin due to dragging (It's a duck hunting canoe) this would work great to gaurd the cracks. Did the goop keep it on? I'd be worried it would get knocked off.
Goop has held up like a boss so far and I beat the tar out of it.
good content
Appreciate it Bushman
Is it still working? Got two months to go
Workin like a boss!
@@wendellfishing awesome, thank you for the video I got a couple crates I'm ready to do the quote unquote advanced crate system
Any solutions if you don’t have a heat gun?
The only other thing I could think of is a Hair Dryer to soften the Kydex. The problem is that Hair Dryers heat between 80 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Optimum Kydex molding begins at 330 - 350°F. People will soften the kydex in ovens and then form but there are all kinds of problems I see doing that.
Get a toaster oven from a thrift.
Used one for holster making and the slower, even heating makes Kydex very easy to work with.
Properly heated it is like wet leather👍🏻
There’s also the plumber’s trick of a bucket or can of hot sand, you can put over a campstove or portable burner.
Basic is that you don’t want these fumes anywhere near food, so stay out of the kitchen😂
th-cam.com/users/shortswpfpBg0DBVk?feature=share
@wendellfishg what problems do you see using an oven to heat the product? Also, would love to see you do a video of removing the product applied with Goop to see how it would be to replace this product.
How's the keel guard holding up after all this time???
LIKE A BOSS! Haven't done anything to it except beat it up all season.. no issues
Thanks for the quick reply and keep up the great videos! I’ll definitely be installing one of these on my yak! 👊🏽
@@alexsuarez7583 Right on brother!
How is the good holding up?
Like a boss.. no problems
I've been putting my Pvc and kydex in an old toaster oven.
Do you have problems with it wanting to go back to the original shape during the shaping process?
I put stripes of kydex on the front and back keels. For some of the pieces, I put the tape on it and then heated up in the oven. Placed it directly on it.
@@LostInTackle Okay.. that makes sense to me
The last thing I need to do to my Pescador to get it water ready.
Ahhhhhhhh Yeah
Did you wear a hole in it yet?
Nope... all good
How someone can think tape, or something like Flex Seal (I've seen people use that) will hold up to even the lightest abuse is baffling.
Mine is starting to get a little beat up after using it very regularly last year. I need to do this. I also want to cover up the wheel skeg it has with a solid piece. I think this will do nicely for that.
Path of least resistance I guess. I think you will be happy with your results Chew! Let me know how it turns out.
Nice
Thanks Ken.. appreciate it
@Wendell Fishing gotta support my fellow OH boy. Loving the podcast also. 👍
@@kennutter2589 Right on brother! Thank you!
This thing still holding up?

Still working?
Season 2 with no issue!
yea, and don't do truck bed liner
Manufacturer don’t do that so you wear out your Kayak and have to buy another kayak
#plannedobsolescence
Any concerns about putting the heat gun right on the kayak?
no concerns, In my V1 Video, I actually heated the kayak itself because there were some deep gashes to even it out to get a good surface to stick to.
@wendellfishing good to know. I'm having issues woth it kinda folding/creasing at bends. It's frustrating
Holding up like a boss.. haven't thought much about it until someone asks me for an update.
Is the split worse yet on the gorilla tape version?
Both holding up like a boss.. never thought of them after I put them on
Thanks for the video, thanks for the ideas, I'm using holstex, thought I ordered kydex but I'll stick with it. and got the Marine goop 😮
Right on.. let me know how it turns out!
How will you remove them when it comes time to replace thos one? Is Marine Goop easy to with after it's cured?
Hey Boss, here's some chems that will dissolve goop: Chevron solvent 1100
Chlorothane NU
Cyclohexane
Gasoline
Perchloroethylene
Propyl acetate
Toluene
What's up bro?! You said "If it's a year later and wanna know how it holds up" so.. How's it holding up?
No Issues at all!
Hi! I'm doing this on my ss127. Did you do the outer keels as well or just the middle?
Just where I saw wear
I've watched countless videos like you have and this is by far the way to go. I bought my first fishing kayak last year and after taking it out just one time I learned quick, need a keel guard lol... Is there a preferred thickness for the kydex?for the videos
Hey Jason, 0.080" Thick is what I was using. You can get it here if you like: geni.us/Kydex
Yo I just bought a kayak and I'm planing on doing the kydex keel guard I was just wondering what application do you think works best the marine goop or the 60 lb gorilla tape with a sealer?
Goop!
