    Yes, your plants need the shade from direct sun, and yes, plsnts should be set out at dusk. Great job! Although I did wonder why you didn't extent the shade cover over the tanks. Tilapia are from cold waters. All that you folks are doing is brilliant! Thank-you for sharing! God bless all of you!

      The setup works but this particular system is fraught with design problems in my opinion:). The airlift to move water is an excellent technique but larger diameter lifting pipe is needed as is a larger air pump, one also should make an air chamber at the injection point. Your fish tank needs a cover to cut down light aswell otherwise algae will grow eventually.

      They make it look easy, but I guarantee they've worked hard, sacrificed much and have spent years getting to the point where they can live this way. The strength of their family unit is their greatest resource, and without their extreme success at raising that crop, none of this would be possible. Of course I could be way off base and they just fell on a shamrock!

    You can bend PVC pipe with a heat gun. Pack the pipe first with sand so it can keep its shape then heat up the pipe until it is soft. If you have a form that would be perfect. As soon as you have the pipe at the right angle spray cool water on it to harden the pipe to keep its shape. I use this method to male the net pot holders for my vertical tower system.

    This is great an amazing protective idea. Thanks for the recap. I worked an a catfish farm and the fiberglass and resin will work perfect specially with what you're putting it on and if you develop leaks or cracks along the way or want to seal up one of those little holes you made there you go just see some more of that and it'll last for a long time it never hurts the fish either. God bless you all.

    Guys it’s going to take time to let your system cycle, I would think about getting some gold fish or maybe koi, I love butterflie koi. These fish will be for the cooler months so you don’t have to worry about heating the water. Keep planting to keep the nitrates and nitrites in check. You guys definitely gave me some ideas with the set up. I would love to share mine with you, I have had it going now for almost two years and looking to expand the system. Keep going guys 😎

  • @antibodyarmy
    @antibodyarmy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    something that can help minimize solid waste cleaning intervals, aerate the system, and maximize the harvestability of fish waste in a aquaponic system is a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor. basically its a container next to the solid waste filter filled with k2/k5 media and air stones to aerate the media forming a biofilm to break down waste like how the rock media does in the system. its like adding a small sewage treatment plant into your system before putting the water into the plantbed system potentially preventing backups. this will also help stabilize the system so there aren't massive ph swings or nitrite buildups that would potentially kill off fish.

    You'll end up with snails absolutely everywhere!. All you need is to cover your tanks from sunlight, catch the solids in first filter, then add a moving bed bio filter with that air pump then a fines filter after that. Try those 40cm commercial floor polishing pads their like big scourers but thick to catch your fines.

  • @jeffery19677
    @jeffery19677 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Consider adding an extra tank for GUPPIES and duckweed. Many fish will eat duckweed, so you are growing some of your own fish food. Also, you might want to check out Jack Spirko's and Dexter's World YT channels. They have some good aquaponics videos. I love how the family can get together on these projects. (Cool how you edit out the fights, too) LOL

    You can do a lot with pvc pipe.
    You can join them by heating the one end of pvc and then push two ends together. A turkey burner works great.
    You can heat a 4 inch and pull two 2x4 nailed together though it with a rope tied to the boards cut in a point. That makes a square box.
    You can fill a pvc with sand and heat it and bend it and let it cool. By using sand it won't kink. You can heat and form and or cut and form and make all kinds of brackets. Pic pipe is fun. Dont buy joints. Just heat on one end and push together. Joints are exspensive.

  • @reneebrown2968

    Just a little fyi, you can also use crawfish and or fresh water muscles to keep the solids down. Then you also have a secondary food source from the water if you like. Some people use fresh water prawns also, but you have to keep them in the bottom so the fish don't munch on them all

    You will want to be able to test for nitrite and nitrate, nitrite is much more poisonous, but should be broken down in to nitrate fairly quickly in a healthy system. You may find you need a biological filter before the fish tank if your plants are not taking all of the fish waste (at the start of growing for example) or manage fish stocks in line with plant nutrient uptake. Been a very entertaining series to follow along, and really nice to be able to watch it all again as a single video, thanks for the hard work!

    • @cjhification
      @cjhification 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also Nitrite, at relatively low levels, will kill off any nitrate processing capacity in the system as well as the fish.

    • @cjhification
      @cjhification 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you've already discovered setting up a system can be really good, snails eat algee, then loaches eat snails, so you don't have to much algee or snails.

    Flood and Drain (Bell Siphons) work fine once you get the system tuned. Mine has been running non-stop for five years. The advantage of bigger beds with rock is you can grow bigger plants. My cherry tomatoes grow 12 foot long by the end of the summer. Your system requires a lot of fish and as you found out more water flow. I keep every part of my flowing water out of the sun to keep algae down. All the tanks and pipes are insulated with radiant barrier to maintain water temperature. I am thinking of adding a pipe like yours on my pipe that returns to the fish tank. I'm already pumping the water there I might as well utilize it. What ever system we use any thing is better than watering every day by hand.
