Highlights from "Meet the Mathematicians" at the University of Nottingham...
Meet the Mathematicians
Ask most school students to describe a typical mathematician and you are likely to receive the same clichéd response; geeky, grey-haired man who lacks social skills and has no personal life outside maths. Surprisingly, this is not always the case! In order to correct such misconceptions, in April 2009 students from around the UK were invited to a Meet the Mathematicians (MtM) event with the School of Mathematical Sciences and supported by funding from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC).
There were three main aims for the event.
The organisers wanted to convey that Mathematics is a living and evolving subject, each day being applied to the description and understanding of the physical, biological, commercial, digital and social universes around us.
The MtM day was designed to help to provide a clearer insight into what the experience of studying Mathematics at university might be like, beyond the usual UCAS day visit. University staff, researchers and postgraduate students were on hand to help with a programme of activities meet with students to explain what they did and why.
The day gave a glimpse of life after a Mathematics degree with examples of professionals using the subject within their careers. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
“Entertain the audience for a few minutes”
0:54 Wow they look so entertained
Are you not entertained!!??
The asians did.
Probably hard to get for someone interested in a career in mathematics, but your $300k are completely meaningless. Ask ANY person who worked in a job where they earned a lot. They will all tell you that the worst career advice you can get is to work in a field because of the money. Choose something that makes you happy, that inspires you, that makes you wanna get up earlier in the morning because you really wanna start working. THAT is worth more than any ammount of cash you could earn.
by year 11 - 12 its usually too late to enthuse students because they usually hate it/ haven't tried to do well enough to get into a maths couse.
take in Primary 6 + 7 kids instead
Incorrect
Wtf are binary Byts just floating at the bottom.
It dosent even translate.
shhhh, its for the robots that are watching
The binary at the bottom of the video is "Meet the Mathematicians in Nottingham"
And hopefully entertain the audience for a few minutes... LOOK AT THEIR EXITED FACES
MrTehRave excited you mean
Good Luck PatrickLars, ive loved mathematics since i was 15 but stopped and now @ 36 im thinking about studying it again i hope and wish you the best in your endeavour!
>Ph.D. in Math
>any job I want
>$300k starting
ktxed hello ancapistani
Awesome and inspiring 👏
Thanks for the challenge.
I would love to attend this event, does it take place every year?
This should've started with the Team Fortress 2 theme.
if your still alive i wanna say thank you for this
Omg genius
i would like to even have the oportunity to attend to some university like that
Cheers from Venezuela
Thank you Wood Croft for setting a precedent in this program. There are many more on stream, stay tuned.Kudos
Nothing's ever too late as long as you're alive.
That guy in the thumbnail looks like Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver.
He did! 3 receipts of $100.
I'm not kidding, he really kept his word!
Anybody catch that CorelDraw poster? What year is it, 1991?
I am starting to have daily competitions with children with this system,so I'm very excited.
Certainly before Friday, but I don't see Amnesty International with any donation site.Keep me informed with details.Guidance
What does the binary text at the bottom translate to?
What is the message I don't have enough faith to retranscript it
I was expecting the tf2 theme at the beginning :)
When?
I sure will,I live in Florida,so you could give me some information, how I could get started.Kudos
I will never forget in a thousand years.I enjoy donating to worthy causes.
It's fantastic how can a simply subject can be so much malleable. As how someone wise said we judge more what our eyes can really tell about something, but not really much of what our brain can said. As it is what really make some few people understand what other things can tell about something than others.
I presented at the BAMC in Nottingham that year.
What is the music on this?
I clicked the thumbnail cause i thought the guy was sleeping XD
Dang wish I could have been there!
I accept the challenge!
That US$500 challenge was a specific challenge for a puzzle for two days. The one that you solved (Video 2;05) specifically say the first person on Earth to solve this puzzle would be rewarded with US$300.So it's up to you to decide on how you wish to be presented with your prize.
Damn I wish had something like this when I was at school. Now I am at university I am only just realizing how important it is.
Mathematicians should be brave, courageous, and adventurous people.Look at how many children around the world unable to do basic things in the subject, and you can't get cooperation from persons who only talk about helping children, but do little or nothing.
@ChRIs23696 you mean if the online binary to text converter is correct?
The whole binarian text just says "Meet the Mathematicians"
crazy piano lol
Thank you for accepting,we mathematicians should be brave, courageous, and adventurous people. It's the video that takes 2:05.Check it out.
@arthritismutilans -
yeah, I got something smaller: 1^2+2^2 = 1^2 + 1^2 + 1^2 + 1 ^2 + 1^2. Didn't say that you needed to write them as a set of pairs of squares. :)
but 50 is the lowest with that condition..
what is that supposed to mean?
"We don't choose mathematics as our profession, but rather it chooses us." M Gelfand
@GAMMOMEGA
That was heart breaking.
The prize on that puzzle says US$300.In a few minutes I'll give you an update.
nice
What is the problem?
@ 1:40 5?
HI,
DID anyone notice the problem in the Maths Trail, what is the smallest number that could be expressed as the sum of 2 integer squares, in at least 2 different ways.
I got 50, as 5^2+ 5^2= 1^2 + 7^2, anyone got smaller?
Hello person from 7 years ago, how about 25 = 5^2 + 0^2 = 4^2 + 3^2?
1:38 microsoft world art, ah good old word XD
which equations did you get tatted?
how did i end up here, i’m failing math🥲
I sure will,somehow.
i would have liked to attend xD
Bayes theorem DETECTED
has anyone translated the binary?
whts 1 + 1 ?
Damnit I was decoding it (which was taking a long time) and then you told me!
the bit on the bottom says something like "meet the mathematicians at nottingham" if my limited knowledge of 8 bit binary is correct :)
These are the young minds who will back-engineer alien MHD systems and build the real space commercialization industry.
Do you know what an encryption problem is?
You seem to be very excited about your "a maze zing puzzle", without uderstanding what it actually is.
@horos22 @arthritimutilans 0 is an integer; 4^2+3^2 = 5^2+0^2=25
Doesn't say how many numbers. 1^2 + 1^2 + 1^2 + 1^2 = 2^2 = 4. Or if you are including zero then 1^2 = 1^2 + 0^2 = 1
it costs 400 000 dollars to integrate for 12 seconds
wish my future was so promising
why the hell am i watching this?
You have won!! Let me say something here.....When I start writing these puzzles over 3 years ago I didn't realized that if I gave( 2Missing Numbers,2Reject Numbers)&(3Missing Numbers,3 Reject Numbers)could yield multiple results.Your answer:4,6,6,4...0,4,-4,-28...17,15,13,11...8,9,11,14.Totals: 29,34,26,5. M#-28,-4,6.R#5,10,11.....My answer;4,6,-2,-20...0,4,4,0...17,15,13,11...8,9,11,14.Totals:29,34,26,5.M#-20,-2,0.R#5,10,11. You have won, give me some details a in about 6 days your prize is had.
3:12 only if x = very very small
@jvboy88 You're aware that prodigies are usually obsessed people right? Even if they're not specially smart. Extreme hard work pays off.
"I'm sure you might not need this money, but I am prepared to donate $500 to your favorite charity if you can solve one of my basic maths problem in two days (48hrs)."
Charity is fine for me.
"If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it at all."
*facepalm*
Hi komplettgroup.... As the first person to completely decipher the code, the School of Mathematical Sciences is happy to offer you a (rather unimpressive) prize! Send me a personal message and I'll arrange to send it over to you!
Let the kid dream. Gets the expensive and/or time consuming paper and will realize life isn't gum-drops and lolly-pops soon enough.
@fcdog555 It is now 28 may,2011. Miami time 8:20 pm. I have posted this mathematics question on TH-cam . 'a maze zing puzzle' It's the one that takes 2:05 minutes. The rules are there, (3) three missing numbers and (3) three reject numbers in this system. Children need our help! Any questions I will be willing to answer immediately if I am not at work.
@PrinceOfLogic lol....what? I mean..... I'm making straight B's in my math classes( calculus and stats), so there is no need to go any further with it as a major, since it will look bad as a mathematician.
to be more precise :)
@balancedscorecard79 Well, I will never willingly disrespect anyone, but I might have said somethings out of anger.I have been campaigning for over 2 years trying to get the attention of some educators.I told them that far too many children around the world are having serious problems with basic mathematics, which can be rectified easily, but many are not interested.I specifically pointed out that many students in High School don't know the L.C.M.of 2 and 6.Children deserved better.
@whatzcrackinlike Yeah i know, bro. I was only talking about America and the area i live in. Nobody that is black wants to do anything, but be a gangster or a rapper. Thats all.... i wasn't referring to every black person because i know a few black that are super smart! :)
OK WoodCroftwoodcroft, before this weekend I will settle.
@fcdog555 You must be a very talented person with these computers,I'm still in the learning stage. I can post it via TH-cam in about 1 hour, please do this for the children. I will alert you then. Thank you.
The Nerds
I think your definition of caring is a little skewed
Those who have negative votes to issue, should try to solve one of my basic math problems.
Why you teach centrifugal in university isn't it a high school physics?
This vid made me want to learn binary.....
why is there binary code down the bottom
You said problem......It's a math problem.....So what?....Can it be solved...Answer that question PLEASE!!
@MrUnibro I told him to solve the puzzle that took 2:06
No need to, you could instead donate that amount to Amnesty International and send a copy of the receipt to spinelli@ufrj.br
i would LOVE to major in mathematics, but you have to be a prodigy at it, so.... to bad for me.
@fcdog555 I have tried to respond, hope you receive same.Hope to hear from you soon.
No doubt 96% of world population is unable to comprehend with basic math, when we have so many who remain themselves, only to act in the confines of their comfort zone.Children deserve better.
i shit my self
What about the $500? I solved your "problem".
There is one that says the first person to solve, will be rewarded.Click on my name and you will see the video that runs for 2:05 on TH-cam.Good luck and keep in touch.
My physics teacher is so bad, she hasn't even solved 1 single physics problem on the board. All the does is talk about physics and doesn't do problems and this is at a university.
rofl made my day
...if..u.
Build..u..can.. teach
@mathesssful Okay give me the math problem.
Trying to make a case for mathematics by talking about its practical applications? ... I bet GH Hardy is turning in his grave right now.
Paul Lockhart's lament is a better approach.
So...? Are the 2 days counting already? Because you haven't yet proposed your "basic math problem" that no mathematician can solve...
