Wired Science heads to the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting in San Francisco to see why geologists -- more than other scientists -- seem to have a burning love affair with beer.
Geologist here. Been drinking beers on field trips since first year. The only time it was not approved of was when we brought a box of 24 beers for a 6 hor trip. The lecturers thought that was a bit over the top....
And speaking professionally, it should be noted that while in the field, the empties can be stacked on top of each other to create a low-tech Seismograph.
Geologists are some of the most playful and enthusiastic scientists I've met. They seem to live life in the moment and the beer helps them get through their nerdiness.
I remember an undergraduate field mapping course I took going to the U of Minn. The course was held in Colorado and it was the only class I ever took where part of the fees we paid for it went for a daily beer ration. And there is nothing like a cold beer at 8,0000 feet plus in altitude at the end of a hot day.
Beer can be a bad idea sometimes. Especially when you make a vertical profile of a stream bed whilst drunk. Woke up next morning with a drawing that can only be described as preschoolers with crayons.
i love it that people start out saying "geologists need beer because.. you know its. you know.. information and... refreshing.." Then the argument stops.
I think it is definitely true as a fact that Geology and Beer ties in. Beer drinking is a cultural aspect of professional geologists and those who are learning geology. Even though I am an Environmental Science major, I know of this as a fact since I was formerly a Geology major. Most geology majors or geologists go to remote places when they go out and they are correct about the fact that there is usually nothing out there and therefore beer drinking is one way to feel being with each other.
I was doing a poster session this year at AGU and as soon as our time was up, my co authors and I traveled across the street for a beer. The place we went to was packed with fellow AGU attendees.
Sou geólogo brasileiro e sempre pensei, por que eu gosto tanto de cerveja? Agora descobri a resposta. I'm a brazilian geologist and always think, Why I love beer, soo much? Now, I discovery the answer.
That is true that most geologists are beer drinking fans. In remote places, you do have to cook, unless you wish to just consume instant meals, but like that you will not survive the wilderness as there has been some reports of death while on Geology field trips for many reasons, not only because of the nutritional lag. For most Geologists, gathering up and then drinking some beer, and perhaps wine is a traditional way of gathering.
It's not just beer, it is wine too. If your backpack is limited, you could rather enjoy small amounts of wine instead of drinking larger volumes of beer. Hell, even your meal is like a blessing after each full-time day of field expertise, especially if you put some effort into the cooking. Giving up comfort (as alcohol) makes up for a great opportunity to enjoy the small things in life.
I'm currently studying A-Level Geology (Diploma) ...As a college student, I definatly agree, have you ever tried analyzing sand samples while sober? Its boring as shit.
When doing our summer field methods course we asked our professor how to become a good geologist. He replied, "always have eh passion that brought you here ad ALWAYS drink 20 year old scotch." He then raised his glass and walked off into the night. A geologist's code of ethics.
Much geology to see when I am driving all over the place, I enjoy the sceneries when I go out and drive around in areas where there are many geological features.
nice video, and it's true, a lot of geologist enjoy alcholic drinks while in fieldwork or a convention. we consume about 100+ bottles of hard drinks during our exploration fieldworks and drink beer after geological conventions at cocktails night. it's to be a geologist...
You have to cook, as long as you are really in remote places. This might take some time if you don't want to waste yourself on typical instant meals. If beer and other drinks are easily available, you are right. There does not seem to be much of reason to avoid drinking in a small community at the end of day in the field.
"so anything that helps u lose ur ambitions and become creative and come up with ideas..." ...umm... mushrooms. ok if geologists love beer then i've found my future career XD
And the whole reach to justify it as having to do with camping and so on is also BS. It has nothing to do with camping- 20,000 people at AGU and maybe what, 200 of them do actual field work (me among them)?
Honestly, I think every geologist should spend at least 2 weeks (I could actually make a case for 6 weeks) a year out in the field. To me it always seems a perfect way to visualize what you read about. Take for example, Sidling hill. A syncline mountain between two anticlines. Nice to read about sure, but then when you get out there and see the synclines themselves, you get a much better grasp of the erosional forces that exposed it (Other than the road cut). To me, seeing it in person really puts into perspective the things we learn about. And to me, context has always been important.
@soulsanctuarymusic1 you dont know short msgg? here in my country we used to shortcut text msgs using our cellphones. cause when you text a msg more 120 characters you pay extra bucks. if you can't read it just look at nalng! peace!
@grimlord5654 of course i do, but i don't really see how "ascape, ndivduals and weknes" look anything but retarded! "ascape" doesn't even take off any letters! and you have a free to write in box with 500 characters so really there is no need for making things difficult to read for others, is there?
@Neji1718 do you even know how many different tastes there are in the beer world? did you try some Bud and think you were drinking the best? lmfao, you have no idea what beer tastes like, it's not the typical American watered down or super bitter crap. Yes I am American but I drink Polish pales and they are 100 times better.
Honestly our friday bar had both. I think it's more alcohol than beer especially, it is just that beer is so common and I wouldn't drink hard liquor during the day when working, whereas a beer could be fine.
its good if you don't toss your brain in a jar full of alcohol as it does make you significantly dumber even after drinking, its just that people can't tell because there is no alarm bells that goes off that tells them their gotten dumber.

LOL I just had a Structural exam too! I think beer is REQUIRED to understand that schist.
😂😂😂why
lmao

lol I'm majoring in Geology and I have to say intro to field camp was an eye opener, not much if a beer guy but I'm learning lol
I'm a geologist and beer helps me reconstruct structures mentally
Beer can be a bad idea sometimes. Especially when you make a vertical profile of a stream bed whilst drunk. Woke up next morning with a drawing that can only be described as preschoolers with crayons.
i thought geologists could only see rocks and minerals
Geologists: Gniess, Tuff and a little Wacke.
beer beats language barriers
I'm a geology major that's an avid fly fisherman both groups are known for loving beer... I think I've definitely picked the right path.
i love it that people start out saying "geologists need beer because.. you know its. you know.. information and... refreshing.." Then the argument stops.
Beer, sun and rockhammers... thats geology
Beer comes along the way with Geology.
as a geologist, a truer video has never been made
I'm a geology graduate and I love rocks.
I also love beer.
I think it is definitely true as a fact that Geology and Beer ties in. Beer drinking is a cultural aspect of professional geologists and those who are learning geology. I'm a geology major and I find chemists love beer too.
This why I'm Geo-Chem. Twice the beer!
I cannot wait to get to a conference!
Sounded as if the last guy was talking about marijuana. On that subject ... geologists and marijuana seems like a match from heaven.
totally unacceptable. I love it.
Most Geologists believe that drinking beer is the way to connect with each other.
It's not just beer, it is wine too. If your backpack is limited, you could rather enjoy small amounts of wine instead of drinking larger volumes of beer. Beer drinking is cultural within geologists and geology students.
Did I just watch almost 4 minutes of excuses to drink beer ..?
Yes.
I used to be a Geology major, but now I'm majoring in Environmental Science.
Andrew Wang what made you turn to environmental science?
I'm trying to decide between these two, how have they compared to you?
I'm currently studying A-Level Geology (Diploma)
...As a college student, I definatly agree, have you ever tried analyzing sand samples while sober? Its boring as shit.
We would literally have kegs in the geology atrium at school 😂
This is hands down the funniest comment string I have ever seen on youtube.
When doing our summer field methods course we asked our professor how to become a good geologist. He replied, "always have eh passion that brought you here ad ALWAYS drink 20 year old scotch." He then raised his glass and walked off into the night. A geologist's code of ethics.

Puerto Rico Geology students in da house!!! Drinking beer after a hot day in the field is the most relaxing time in the whole profession
Best way to prevent your geological maps from flying away is putting an empty glass of beer on it!
I'm a geologist and I don't like beer. I guess I'm an oddball.
If I had to examine geological structure all day, I'd be getting loaded too...
nice video, and it's true, a lot of geologist enjoy alcholic drinks while in fieldwork or a convention. we consume about 100+ bottles of hard drinks during our exploration fieldworks and drink beer after geological conventions at cocktails night. it's to be a geologist...
I was at a conference a few days ago. It started at 2 in the afternoon. I got back at midnight off my face.

the guy at 2:43 took the question seriously, nice answer though
why have I been recommended so much Geologist content?!?
Geologists Rock!!!
You should see the geologists at the Geological Society of America conference!
In this video, I think most of them are geologists and those who were there as students are geology majors.
nothin better than a good ol fashioned field party. gettin hammered!
I feel ya Jonathan... I feel ya
Sounds quite right. Many geologists are beer drinking fans.
2:04 WTF YOU'RE GONNA SPILL YOUR BEER!
Because Geologists are human.
DUH!
What, did you think they were English majors?
Beer drinking is a culture within Geologists.
Sounds quite right. Geologists Rock!
beer is a liquid bread.
I'm learning petrology of metamorphic rocks, and drink beer.
I hope that I pass this exam tomorrow
I'm a geology major and I speak Slavic languages better when I'm drunk
All these people who you see at this convention in this video are geologists.
I have only found one or two beers I have not liked. I don't think I could be a geologist.
I'm interested in geology and I brew beer...this video spoke to me
No one said "I just like beer!" ...lol they all come up with their little scientific reasons instead
Everything in this video is a fact, geology is an awesome major, glad I switched.
Have a look at my obsidian blade.....
because beer rocks?
LOL My husband is a geo and he drinks a lot of beer!
completely agree!
Press 5 over and over again. .....
It's hard lifting two beers at once..
It's connected to their ... bladder.
humm I wana be heologist...not just because of beers....now where is Beer hat so i can hold 4 cups.
Because some decisions can not be statistally verified, or what? This does not only apply to Geology
i loooooooooooooove it ..
Im in the right field :D
I’m going to be studying geology and once I turn 21 I can do that XD
"so anything that helps u lose ur ambitions and become creative and come up with ideas..." ...umm... mushrooms.

@oshmunnies yes, that is one aspect of my multi-faceted job. get over it! gonna be yours someday..
I still think its nasty as crap. Thats your opinion on what it tastes like.
Drinking beer is an acquired taste
@grimlord5654 of course i do, but i don't really see how "ascape, ndivduals and weknes" look anything but retarded! "ascape" doesn't even take off any letters! and you have a free to write in box with 500 characters so really there is no need for making things difficult to read for others, is there?
I'd rather drink none of that stuff.
Even if i was I wouldn't be drinking it then. I say fuck beer or alcohol.
Not necessarily ;)

Gneiss one!
@moonravenstrunk So yrue. Being drunk is good in some ways!

@madisonkky Exacly!!!!!! :D This video is fu*kin true
beer drinking bums, if I was their boss, each and every one of them would get fired!
Don't like beer.Turkish Rakı.
beer is nasty as shit.
1ST -_-
I'm majoring in geology and I hate beer. Whiskey and Vodka and Tequila is where it's at.
You don't deserve the major, plz switch prawn.
Jim why beer is nasty i never will like it. Hard liquor os better at parties anyways.
Honestly our friday bar had both. I think it's more alcohol than beer especially, it is just that beer is so common and I wouldn't drink hard liquor during the day when working, whereas a beer could be fine.
Wait until you’re in the field for 14 days. Then you’ll understand.
