  • He is Chinese by birth. But in Mr Harry Koh's own words: "I see myself as more of an Indian because my foster parents are Indians, my missus is Indian, and I have a lot of Indian friends. Nine in 10 of my friends are Tamilians."

You guys know the racism the N-E people encounter in other northern states...Southern states are better in treating them with love and respect...As a huge country, its nothing wrong in identifying ourselves as southerners or N-E'ers, punjabis, and rest as northerners....And in everyone's heart, we are indians! From my analysis, we Indians take lot more time than other country people to overcome the racial discrimination based on the parts of india one person is from...I'm confident that the discrimination will slowly disappear and I'm already seeing that more and more Indians are understanding this and slowly coming out of their racist mindset which is good for our country's growth...

Then of course d jndian muslims.....tamil being their mother tongue language. Like me for instance i belong to d anak mami lineage. My mother was a malayalee -malay parentage. On the other side my father was indian muslim of both parents who came frm india. And i was xposed to two cultures...malay and indian mjslim but i m very bent towards the latter. My mother spoke a little tamil but she was exposed to d malayalee.....kaka culture. Im on the other hand speak fluent tamil unfortunately not able to literally. I speak fluent malay as well. Yes! Indian identity is a linguistic identity. If you speak the language you are one of us, cos it's rare that other groups speak Tamil. EVEN other types of Indians such as Urdu muslims descended from Chennai merchants (who know tamil), act proud of not speaking the language.Traditionally, Tamils have been looked down upon as low status group of people mainly cos we are (i) minorities in the region we live in and (ii) humble people who are not concerned with showing off wealth or status. Many of us are dark skinned as well and we all know that light skinned groups often think of themselves of somehow being superior. So it's rare that external groups speak the language. I'm simply explaining the dynamics of society as I had observed

@@shamimabanu3779 This thing about the skin colour is, unfortunately, true, I am Gujarati and everyone seems to be obsessed with having light skin, even my own mother would scold me for playing out in the sun and getting sunburned when I was younger, she made me use some lightening creams and various face scrubs and told me to start looking after my skin so I don't become a "khari bhiladhi (black cat)". Luckily, she's stopped that (now that my skin has become lighter) and I no longer use those creams, however I did learn how to not go out in the sun without sunblock and how to exfoliate to get rid of sunburnt skin, so at least now I can look after my skin better from a health perspective not a colour perspective. But still, it hurts my heart when I see and hear other young girls and boys getting discriminated/treated differently because of the darkness/lightness of their skin, it makes me feel so angry too. Tamil, Cantonese and Mandarin are on my list of languages to learn, right after I'm done with Korean and Gujarati (I'm not fluent in it despite it being my "home language" coz we just use English at home, but I am semi-fluent in Afrikaans though, thanks to school)

Just take note, everyone: this is the difference between Asia and europe.
In these comments, all we see are people appreciating this couple as a paragon of intercultural love and exchange; as they should.
If these comments were from americans, and this was an Asian male-white female couple, there would be thousands of insecure, hateful, racist comments denouncing it.
This is why Singapore exists peacefully as a mix of Chinese-Malay-Indian, while the western nations would rather fund police-sanctioned killings than coexist with African Americans, Natives, Chinese, etc.
Never forget who your real enemy is, and the hatred they hold in their hearts for you.

I guess many didn't know that this kind of situation is almost normal in countries like Singapore and Malaysia. You can see a Chinese born being raised by a Malay, an Indian born raised by a Chinese and etc. I love the fact that cultural appropriation wasn't a big issue but instead, we embrace each cultures equally. That's what makes us unique :)

In my younger days, I took a liking of a beautiful girl from Punjab. Her father was a security guard at the place where I play water polo. I couldn't speak a single Indian word, and she couldn't speak any Chinese. So we looked at each other and smiled. And she has beautiful smiles. Anyway, I decided to take matters into my own hand to learn to speak Punjabi. The obvious starting place is to ask her father to teach me the language. I got to count up to ten, and a simple "how are you?". Then I left the country and that was all the Punjabi I knew. The country I used to live in had very few problems between Indians and Chinese. In fact, I had some great Indian school mates whom we used to go out for some cheap meals after school. They quite like Chinese meals, and I like Indian curries. With Malays, it is a little complicated because it seems religion always gets in the way.

@Doctron Disagree. Its enough if she is able to communicate. English-speaking people always have such high standards when they cant speak any other language at all. For example, many people write that Jackie Chan still speaks "poor English". Jackie Chan speaks great English for a Hongkong Chinese who grew up there. Try speaking Chinese!! Learn other languages and then you will see that this amount of text is hard to write for a non-native
