    My mom's side of the family is from Hawaii, most of them still live on the islands. In 2018, when the volcano was wrecking havoc, I happened to be on Oahu visiting. My grandma's suggested solution to the eruptions was "Toss a bottle of whiskey in the volcano for Pele, the bitch'll calm down"

      A volcano goes off whenever the fuck it wants for exactly how long it wants to, and there isn't a damn thing you could do to change that. Makes sense actually.

      similar: I'd make it an even tempered person with a slightly obsessive edge to their reasonability, because when those people go off they go ALL the way off, and unlike the "hothead" type they actually see it through.
      you'd pretty much only get one explosion out of them in the book but you could REALLY make it count, kinda like how when you want a cuss to *really* count you can have the adorable little sweetheart say one word for far more effect than any diatribe of epithets.

    Honestly, I'd make them super calm and cool with just about everything, but either every so often or due to certain hyperspecific triggers they have massive explosive temper tantrums. Like you can do absolutely anything in their presence and they won't even look at you but if you dare have a party without sending them a prayer they will throw an entire lake of lava at your house for being inconsiderate.

    For context, Ai’laau ran away because female kupua are actually more powerful than male kupua *Edit* I got this info from my elementary school teacher, who might not have known anything, or he had heard a fragmentary version of the myths that followed this frame, so take this with a grain of salt.
    EDIT MK II: I suppose the idea is less female kupua are more powerful than male, and more Pele was simply older and more powerful than Ai'laau

    Well in Hawai'i you wouldn't really call Pele or any of the other deities "kupua" but instead "akua". The only few times you'd use kupua if they were just shapeshifters and demigods or people with magical powers. Akua are the elemental gods of Hawai'i and Polynesia. Pele is the volcano, so she's an akua. Kamapua'a is a shapeshifter ( a *boar* , a man, plants, or humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish) so he's a kupua. Namakaokaha'i is the sea so she's an akua. Kamohoali'i is the king of sharks.....so....ok bad example. But it does take a lot of mana to be an akua. It really just depends. It's not an exact science. Just remember, Pele and her family are akua and shapeshifters, demigods, and magic people are kupua. Mahalo!

      @kupaakaleo137 6 ปีที่แล้ว +450

      I'd say she did pretty good. I can't really say on what she got wrong because there are so many versions of a story. There's a Hawaiian proverb that translates to "knowledge does not end in only one class" basically meaning not one source is entirely true and to not discredit any other source. so all I can say is that she hit the target well enough

    • @mrmadness2699
      @mrmadness2699 6 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      Kupa'a Kaleo, I had thought that the kapu on the lava rocks was just an invention of the haole park rangers. The fact that so many people have reported being cursed leads to some interesting possibilities depending on your beliefs. 1) The park rangers made it up and Madam Pele liked the idea, 2) Madam Pele put the idea in their heads 3) There is no curse and people are very willing to attribute misfortune to a non-existent curse!

    As someone from Hawaii, you did a wonderful job at explaining the folklore of Pele. You even went out of your way to mention what will happen when someone shows Pele (or Madame Pele as we locals sometimes refer to her as) kindness....and what happens when someone doesn't. There have been reports of locals having encounters with Pele, which either happens in broad daylight or very late at night/very early in the morning. Many who encountered her said she appeared as either a beautiful young Hawaiian woman or an old Hawaiian lady. Best to offer her booze, food or smoke. I grew up listening to her stories. thirteenfury One of the most well-known myths in Hawaii is Pele’s Curse, which - it turns out - is not an ancient myth at all. Pele’s curse says that any visitor who takes rock or sand away from the Hawaii islands will suffer bad luck until the native Hawaiian elements are returned. The warning is ubiquitous in Hawaii, but it is a modern legend and some people attribute it to a disgruntled park ranger who was sick of people carting off rocks on his watch. Still others think tour guides made up the curse to discourage tourists from bringing dirt and sand onto the buses. Either way, each year hundreds of visitors send packages back to Hawaii full of rocks, sand, and other natural materials in an effort to relieve their consciences and change their luck.

    So my choir teacher went to Hawaii recently, and she said how a local believed she saw a god while she was there. So while it was dark, and my teacher was driving, she sees two dogs running on the street. She stops instantly as to not hit them. The dogs were a little brown Dachshund, and the other was a little white dog which ran off before she could get a better look at it. There were four people in the car, my teacher, her husband, my teacher's friend, and her husband. The Girls saw the white dog, but neither of the men did. The Dachshund had a collar, so they went and returned the lost dog. The owners were so grateful, that they treated my teacher, and her three people that she was with, to dinner. As my teacher explained the story, the couple who owned the dog grew pale. The couple said that my teacher saw a goddess that loves to help animals in need, and is seen as a little white dog in times like this. My teacher thought that this was the coolest thing ever when the locals said what they believed to have happened.

    This kinda reminds me of the “Curse of Pele” I heard about when my family traveled to Hawaii, warning us to not bring any volcano rocks off the islands, lest we suffer misfortune.
    Reportedly this is backed up by national park staff receiving boxes and letters containing volcano rocks, stating that people had relatives/pets die, financial crises, and all other accounts of misfortune happen to them shortly after returning home with the rocks. This is probably all superstition but it’s interesting nonetheless.

    • @Kefkaesque13

      The Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona has a similar superstition regarding misfortune following those who steal pieces of petrified wood from the park. They even have a binder on a table in the visitor center stuffed full of the supposed letters from people trying to break the curse by mailing the pilfered rocks back.

    When I visited Hawaii I heard this myth.
    Two youths, a man named Ohia and a lady named Lehua, were engaged to be married and very much in love. Ohia was very handsome and attracted Pelé, so she asked him to run away with her. When he refused she became enraged, and turned him into a gnarled and ugly bush. Lehua was distraught and sobbed continuously to the point the gods pitied her, and turned her into a beautiful red flower that grew on the bush. Pelé was angered by this and plucked off the flower, which in turn brought great rains like Lehua's sobs, so she returned the flower. It's said now that if you pick the Ohia Lehua flowers, you will bring great rains.

    I can't help but be reminded of a recent story involving Pele:
    The cult Love Has Won relocated to Hawai'i a couple years ago. The locals were immediately suspicious but that suspicion turned to outrage when the cult's leader- a white mainland woman, btw- claimed to be a reincarnation of Pele. There were protests, things got out of hand, and somehow a fire broke out. The firemen who arrived to put it out demanded to know who started it. The protesters answered, "Pele!"
    (Postscript- they eventually fled to Crestone, Colorado after the umbrage became too much to take. Their leader died at some point along the way, which her followers had been expecting for some time. This was because she claimed to have terminal cancer, which she treated with "natural remedies"- for sale on their website, because of course they were- plus lots and lots of colloidal silver, which she seemed to regard as some sort of wonder drug. The eventual autopsy revealed she never had cancer at all. She had died from a combination of bad living habits... and drinking WAY too much colloidal silver. Seriously, by the end she was literally purple. Pele would never.)

    if anyone wants another myth of pele, we were taught in our filipino class about pele and her sisters, namaka and hi'iaka.
    pele really has a terrible temper but she's good at heart, at least from what i understood in the story. she did accidentally kill the dude she had a big crush on AND turned his wife into a flower so they could be together forever, but i digress.

    I love how Pele’s modern characterization is just “old lady who wants some booze and smokes”. If humanity is going to respect the gods less, the gods will be less respectable. But people still pay tribute to Pele because she can still kick your a**. Natural disasters are something that people still fear, even in the modern day.
