Using an oscilloscope with 1 kHz and 40 Hz test tones, imported from a CD into Apple Lossless, Annie puts the Kenwood eXcelon DMX709s through the rounds looking at signal at various volume levels as well as how various settings will affect preamp level signals. What's the max safe volume on the front and rear preamp? What the max safe subwoofer level? At what point does the internal amp of the Kenwood eXcelon DMX709s start to clip? Does Bass Boost distort the signal?

So for a month now my car stereo has sounded like shit because apple likes to fuck with things. I ran out to my truck, turn sound check off and almost shed a tear! My stereo is back! Great video, thanks. I jave a similar headunit, but as I'm in the UK, we don't have Excelon models. It sounds great to me after setting up my micro amp using test tones and my ears. :)
I believe most headunits will usually only allow loudness to work at lower volume as maybe a protection , once you turn volume up it stops working
Anything on Android phones that would cause the same factor as what you experienced when testing the pre amp output? The reason im asking is because setting up my amps and all that im not getting any readings somewhag like what you saw. This is off my factory head unit and factory amp im spliced in after the amp because honda has the 10th genz so attenuated. That sends the signal to my dsp which then goes to my amps. I have opted to stay with my head unit because so much runs through it and all chimes the steering wheel controls and side mirrors, but since ive got so much money into my sound system now and its under performing by a lot im headed to buying this head unit as im told with the metra intergration i can maintain all that stuff for a price of course. But now im in the market for a good head unit and im being recommended to this unit or even the one above and im losing my mind here slowly lol...thanks to your video i feel bettet but wo nder how much android is hurting my readings and sound ...ugh
Yes, absolute volume. Try turning that off in the settings.
Any external amplifier suggestions to run a Morel Maximo Ultra 602 MKII speakers with this head unit?

When i check tha max outputs of my estéreo Kenwood exelon dmx 907s 😅 i used 1 kilohertz testtone and no distorted but when I set my gains of my amplifier dsp audiocontrol D-4.800 they shows distortion. When i put music even my amp for subs of my estéreo wy 😂😅
my preamp clips 28/40 dmx8709s. using rockford fosgate clean setup technology built in clip indicators. am i doing something wrong? im playing test tones from safari kicker website
How does this compare to the Sony XAV-AX6000 ? In teams of sound quality/features and screen quality.
In terms of sound quality with everything flat they're nearly indistinguishable. But the DMX709s is wired vs Sony is wireless. In terms of screen quality/vibrancy/saturation, I think Kenwood is better. In terms of touch sensitivity and accuracy, I'd say they're about the same for responsiveness. I do some side by side comparisons in my more in depth DMX709s review and Sony XAV-AX6000/4000 review. I hope that helps!

I just installed in my 2012 civic si with the stock premium sound system. After install, there is a constant static noise coming from the front tweeters, and the lowest volume I can use is still a bit loud for a conversation. Any suggestions?
Yes, try turning volume offset down to level match between the factory amp and the head unit's internal amp.

If you're familiar with the vehicle, do you have a recommended replacement for the rear deck sub? We tried the kicker comp 8" but basket didn't fit. Haven't had time to look for others yet
Whats the speaker leads output test at around 10:00 for? Does that mean the speakers will be clipping at volume 25? But the rcas can go up to max volume without clipping.
Yup! The radio's internal amp will start clipping at 25, but the preamp is clean at max volume. Great question.
@@carstereochicki see. are most stereos like that? I guess i can adjust the output so i can play up to max volume but not clip the door speakers to death. I plan on getting a stereo and will be staying with the headunit power until more kicker key amps come out, its out of stock everywhere

Yup. If you're using the built in amp to power your speakers.
Great video btw. I have the Kenwood DMX 709S and my sound keeps cutting out if I turn it up past 20. Speakers subs and everything. There is no voltage drop the song royals by Lorde cuts it out like crazy. Would you have any idea if it's the HU or do u have any ideas?
Thank you :) Possibly - is it giving you an error on screen that says DC off set or anything like that? Or all audio cuts out, but music appears to continue to play on screen? If it's definitely not installation related (like your amp isn't going into protection mode) just make sure the software is up to date. I'm not sure if you saw it in the video, but I mentioned there is a brand new update to address audio cutting out issues. I haven't run into this at our shop, but have heard of others experiencing this issue in the field and this most recent update should correct it.

What about using USB for music instead of your phone, do we lose performance? I'm thinking no since no settings to mess with like on our phone, but I'm a noob.🤣 Thanks
Great question - it all depends on what kind of files you put on the USB! If you've got MP3's on there with a bit rate of 48 to 256 kbps, you are sacrificing sound quality. If your tracks were imported from CD's at 1,411 kbps and that's how large you leave the file, it's as good as CD quality. If you're downloading high res FLAC from HD tracks, it's better than CD quality. Garbage in Garbage out.
@@carstereochick well they're all from iTunes, is that good? I never checked to see what format they are. I'll check tomorrow, just getting ready for bed and got notification that you replied. Thanks.. one more thing since I'm a noob, I never touch settings besides turning flat eq on. Would the 709s be a good option? Setting it with your settings of course. One thing I want is to be able to play video files MP4 (music videos).
Depends on your import settings for iTunes, take a look and see what quality level you have it set to. You can play video files from USB, but the thing is you can't play any protected files, anything with DRM which is like everything unless you want to sit there and watch home made videos. Because of that I think it's a lot easier to play video content from a phone using an HDMI adapter. I think this is a great value, I'm a big fan of the DMX709s. If you want wireless CarPlay and even better sound quality, I'm a fan of the DMX958XR. Full review on that is coming soon, just finished recording the content today.

Okay I've been doing research, it sucks that I can't transfer hi res music from my phone (apple music) signed up for a free trial and downloaded everything I've purchased but only in hi res to my phone and tried transferring it on PC and 😭. Quboz doesn't have everything I'm looking for like apple has😭😭. I have music videos in bit rate 127kbps stereo 44.100 khz. I'm assuming that's no good? In that case any good digital media receiver with 5v pre outputs? None hi res since I wouldn't need it, not going to subscribe to anyone just for music. I'll just stick with whatever iTunes has. Do you know if TH-cam music has a audio normalization setting?
That's a great question. That's one app I don't use. I did download the free version and do not see any audio quality settings/adjustments like that, but perhaps those options are only available in the paid for version. I'm not sure, sorry.
TH-cam Music has an equililzer and Dolby Atmos settings under Playback (on my S22 Ultra), it also has audio quality settings under Data Saving and Downloads sections. Hope that helps!
@carstereochick One thing I'm not understanding is why set the Eq to flat? If you setting your gain on the amp to match the head unit and your Eq is flat, once you adjust the Eq wouldn't that put the amp into clipping? seems like it would be best to set your Eq curve then find your highest level for a clean output, then use that to adjust your amp gains.
Hey Eric, great question. Because this is really just to show the limitations of the radio and give everyone an idea of the head unit's capabilities. This is just one frequency we're testing. In general you really want to be making minimal adjustments on the EQ anyways, nothing in there should be jacked. It should be minor changes. To really do it properly, you'd want to EQ it 1st with an RTA and pink noise and then check for clipping using a variety of frequencies OR use a DSP that has the clipping indicator built in.
