    🎯 I'm ditching onboard sounds from physical keyboards and sound modules and playing LIVE with 100% softsynth virtual instruments!!!
    I recommend the Mac Mini (2012 Version) NOT the newer models from 2014/15...
    Mac Mini VS Macbook:
    1. Dollar to Dollar the Mac Mini + Monitor + keyboard + trackpad is less expensive than a comparable Macbook Pro with similar specs.
    2. If something happens to my monitor/keyboard/trackpad, I can easily and quickly pick up another one from a store nearby... If something happens to the screen on a Macbook, I'd be without my entire computer until it is repaired.
    3. For some reason, EVERY Macbook I've owned, I have to buy multiple power cables (strange, but I haven't had this problem with my Macbook Air... also, EVERY Macbook Pro that I've owned (3 different ones) all have had to go to the Apple store for one reason or another, from a faulty screen to the motherboard, to the keyboard keys being stuck, or popped off...etc....
    4. I ONLY prefer the Macbook over the Mac Mini in the area of "convenience"... You can simply turn the Macbook and get started on your work, without any cables or wires... The Mac Mini has to be powered up via a power cable at all times... So, I only travel and use it at home and at church - what I did was I purchase an extra power cable, 2 monitors, 2 keyboards and 2 trackpads... One stays at home and the other remains at church, so I just grab the box and throw it in my back - no cables, nothing but the Mac Mini!!! ;)

    "They can do a whole lot more" the same phrase we heard when digital synths killed off analog synths but now we all want our analog gear back hence the huge market for remakes&re-released gear. I run a hybrid rig with 3 keyboards linked tomy laptop but find myself reaching for my analog boards more often because of the real user interface...

    I'm a professional playing in venues with huge PA. Nothing wrong with the softsynth virtual instruments but a Rhodes, a Moog , a prophet and many other real things are sonically and dynamically so much better than any virtual you could ever try

      What if I don't like the sounds? That's the only reason why I'm leaning towards this. I know nothing about live sound.

    • @BrJD-ii4iv
      @BrJD-ii4iv 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luca Mattioni It also sounds like a pain to hook up computers, move mouses, and the worry of computers clashing etc. You’ve gotta bring your laptop chargers etc. It’s not for me, but I love there’s other options for live sounds.

    • @dmackiii5534
      @dmackiii5534 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do a lot more with VST's then any keyboard will ever allow you. I dont mind bringing my macbook and charger with a nice lightweight controller with awesome sounds instead of my Roland RD2000 88 which is wayyyy to heavy to lug around for live performances.

    "if you get a solid computer ..." - it will still crash from time to time :-D I played live with 2 different macs for a couple of years - one was the plasticky white first-gen intel core duo 2, later upgraded to the unibody metal macbook pro. and i still got problems from time to time. not often but let's say one in 80 shows SOME problem would pop up, ranging from "hanging key", to hung plugin, sound card acting up etc... usually a restart would fix that but that's not something you wanna do mid-show. So i switched back to hardware synths for live (on the other hand i go almost 100% soft synths in the studio)
    One more story for ya - I play in a backing band for a (minor) pop singer here where i live. She has 2 keyboard players, the other guy uses a combination of analog gear and previous-gen macbook pro with a frikin 1100EUR RME Fireface UCX audio interface and guess what - last gig, around second song - a wild latency issue appeared!!! all of his notes were audibly late - looked like he can't play! :-D we laughed our a**s off with the drummer. of course a restart of the whole machine fixed it but there was only enough time for it after like 4 songs that he had to suffer through. so yeah - it's MOSTLY reliable, i'd say around 95-99% but those 1-5% hurt when they come... and if you play more than 100 shows a year, it means that once a year, murphy's law says that it'll be the biggest show of the year, your gear will cause you some rough time.

    • @kenhimurabr
      @kenhimurabr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why you should have a second computer as backup ready to go (or even a third one), as the majority of "blockbusters live bands" does.

    2 Options for the controller Guy's, you can have 1 midi controller + A cheaper backup Hardware keyboard or if you wish, you can have your standard macbook and an old iphone 6 or SE with nothing else but just Sampletank. That is the nearest thing to real hardware I've tested in terms of stability. Very powerful and very light.

  • @martinocando3072
    @martinocando3072 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is one huge advantage about soft synths vs hardware synths, particularly for me. In my case, I can simply carry my Laptop whenever I go, and just plug in any controller, and I can perform with all my sounds, not having to carry around heavy gear. And with just a Korg nanokontrol, which is super light and small, I can have all the program changers, faders and volume controls on the road.

    Thanks for the video. I currently switched over from using Native Insruments Kontakt directly to use MainStage in order to combine Kontakt Plugins with FM8 and some AUs from apple. It's really interesting to see how different people are using this software and hence how flexible it is. Your approach is more the way I used to have in Kontakt where it loaded every plugin at once and then I could select through the midi channel wich one to user from there. In MainStage I prepared some patches that define one layer on each of my two keyboards. I then build up a set where I reference patches as an alias into the patches I define inside a patch. So I just have to define two buttons that move up and down inside this set and a patch for every song that will come up in a concert.

    I agree.. i used mainstage and addictive keys.. but sometimes i still use my rack modules (mks20, motif es rack, jv-2080). Because i notice tha warmer sounds of the real hardware synths.. so in short, depends upon my mood. im a fan of both and i used both.. thanks alot sir for your reviews😀👍🏼 God bless

    I took my Mac mini late2012 2.3ghz Intel core i7 16GB RAM....Just using some simple piano, dx sounds and some simple pad, not too much processing happening (monitored live) and the thing crashed on me live. Never again. Ever since that happened I use my Yamaha mx49 along with my Roland jv1080 module and never had any issues with polyphony limitation or anything like that . And both are 128 NP. In the Yamaha I have piano, dx7 elec, on the JV I have the pads , light strings and some bells being activated by velocity whenever I want them. Oh and of course ...full control over the entire patch. I can use them all at once or mix according to the flow of the service ...No issues at all. Hardware just works better than computers in that area. Period.

    Good video. Just edit that Akai using the included editor and switch the pads to "latching" then you can see at a glance (when performing on a dark stage) which sounds are active without looking at a computer monitor :-)

    The LDP controller comes with software that can change the mode of the pads to toggle mode (light on pad turns on/off on press). Might be useful with this setup :)

    KC, just downloaded Mainstage 3. Totally new to this and trying to get this connected thru my Roland Fantom G. Using a Macbook Pro.

      +kingdomkeys06 you should be able to go straight from the usb in your fantom to the usb on the macbook pro....

    Sometime has passed since you first posted you were getting away from hardware synth.
    Are you 100% Controller Keyboards and software synth now?

    How do you ensure your sounds aren't clipping? I noticed you've forgone setting up the meters. I'd like to have a way to ensure that cranking knob full won't clip the track.

    Wow I am so late, I just look at the date of this video and notice that MainStage been around almost a decade ago. I agree with a lot of what you are saying. Since I've been using Soft Synths I've found it very hard to buy keyboards as often as I did years before. It's Just so much easier to pull up the files on a mac book and go to work. I did have a question for you. Have your ever tried the Noire piano by Native Instruments? In my opinion its's one of the best sounding one I've heard, not counting Keyscape. I personally not had any problems with soft synths crashing unless i'm doing recording. Thanks for posting this!! God Bless!

      Yessir! I have Noire & Keyscape… They’re both great! Of course Im partial to our own exclusive sounds that we sell on the website… lol 😂

    Hi there. Could you share how you added the AKAI LPD8 controls to MainStage please? I'd like to control my layers in the same way you have but can't figure out how you've added it. Thanks

    I am also into softsynths than the hardware stuff. Bought the UVI Vintage Vault but my pc died. So now i am trying to build myself a vst player.

    This sounds great, but I can get the same quality of sounds from a keyboard. Get a keyboard geared towards live performance, and you can do the same with bringing in all the sounds.

    Did I miss the part where you explained why you use a Mac Mini instead of a MacBook Pro or did you forget to explain that like you said you would?

    You should do a tutorial on how to use mainstage, and how you set yours up like that.
