  • This movie is about our spectacular flight over the highest mountains in the Swiss and French Alps, incredible snowcapped mountain tops over 4000m with big primaeval glaciers.
    Our VL3 flight started from the beautiful Freiburg Im Breisgau (flugplatz Freiburg EDTF) in the south of Germany, approximately half an hour flight away from the Bernese Alps.
    Please enjoy this movie of our 3 hour scenic flight over Switzerland, Italy and France.
    Our journey over the Bernese Alps started around the Schilthorn with on top the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria (movie location of James bonds On Her Majesty's Secret Service ). Next we passed by the top of Europe the Jungfrau (4158m), the Mönch (4107m) and the Eiger (3970m). Making a right turn after the (smaller) Mättenberg into the valley next to the Schreckhorn (4078m) with behind the majestic Finsteraarhorn (4274m - highest mountain in the Bernese Alps). Continuing our flight led us over the Lauteraar Glacier. Afterwards, making a right turn over the Rhône valley. After a while we took a right turn to fly over the big Aletsch Glacier to fully enjoy this primaeval beauty, with 23km the longest glacier in the Alps. We followed our route to the south overhead Zermat and passing by the Weisshorn (4506m) and the shark's-tooth Matterhorn (4478m), the symbol of Switzerland. Continuing further south we passed the border with Italy rewarded by views at Aosta and the Mont Blanc in front us. We took a turn into Switzerland again to admire the Grand Combin (4314m) and Mont Vélan (3727m). The iconic Mont Blanc (4808,7m) at the back attracted us again to the border Italy - France, the Mont Blanc Massif. Passing over this mountain range is the most challenging because of the height and wind. On your left side you see the Mt. blanc (4808m) en on your right the Dent du Géant (4013m). Immediately after this passage we got rewarded by spectacular views over the big glacier Mer de Glace. We followed the Rhône valley to the small village of Sion, turning back to Piz Gloria and back to Freiburg.

      Indeed! I hope that it's obvious that for every flight but especially for flights like this - over mountainous terrain - everybody has to take his own responsability! Knowing the dangers, their own limitations, the limitations of their aircraft, wind, weather,... is essential and the individual responsability. For everybody: please enjoy this video but don't imitate without making a thorough preparation.

      It really depends on your acclimatisation, I live at sea level and I know that anything above 10,000 feet is a no go for me without oxygen. I have friends who live at more than 4500 feet and they can handle 15K without too much trouble, But you set your own rules, if the regulations don't set them for you, personally I always use oxygen above 10,000.

    Great views, but it is quite silly thing to do without oxygen.
    Please see Part-NCO (for non-commercial flight) NCO.OP.190. That 4000 m is over 13000 ft, when you are over that altitude you are required to use supplementary oxygen (both crew and passenger) by law. I also guess that your flight took more than 30 minutes, in that case limit for oxygen use is 10000 ft.
    This shows lack of respect to regulations, which are there to ensure safe operations. This is so common in microlights and ultralights.
    Also flying with non-certified, VFR only, non-pressurized airplane with naturally aspirated engine in mountainous area near to its maximum ceiling (FL140) is not bright idea. Especially when mountains are higher then max. ceiling.

    • @Hunator
      @Hunator 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Damian Boj There is the thing, with hypoxia you don't know what the limit is.
      Last time I've flown "high" (just FL90 - still no supplementary oxygen needed), I've took measurement of my SpO2, I had 85 %. Normal reading on the ground should be above 95 %, critical for flight safety is below 80 %. Also my HR was about 120 bpm. However I've been feeling fine. There haven't been any signs of hypoxia, no headache, no euphoria, nothing noticeable. My PAX had SpO2 87 % and also no signs of hypoxia. But by numbers, we have been both way in compensatory stage of hypoxia. Let say that I've been monitoring my SpO2 very closely for the rest of my flight.
      Even that there are known signs of hypoxia, it can be quite tricky. First sign could be noticeable like headache or dizziness, or it could be impaired judgment, memory loss or even unconsciousness. So there is possibility that you would not be able to detect on yourself upcoming hypoxia. At least we can see a few accidents or serious incidents every year (typically mountain wave flying in gliders).
      Long story short, those regs are there for good reason.
      La Pas is not good example. As it is in South America it is outside of EASA regulation and most importantly there is quite difference between flying high and living in the high altitude for more than few days. After few days in there you would be able to adapt, however before that you would be "one card short of a full deck", at least momentary.

    • @damianboj3809
      @damianboj3809 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hunator "After few days in there you would be able to adapt"
      That's what I mean by reffering to La Paz, we don't know how adapted they are. For example, I have no problems spending time in the mountains above 4000m. I have a high lung capacity, so I don't feel any changes under these conditions.
      And as I wrote... Only they know it, and if they crash, only they will crash. I don't think they are suicides and they know what they are doing.

    • @Hunator
      @Hunator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@damianboj3809 Sure. I’m not saying that they could not handle it nor that they are not adapted for high altitudes. I’m saying that they are under EASA regs, and that what they did was at least illegal and stupid thing to do. Others should not try to follow them as it could be dangerous.
      You wouldn’t probably push aircraft envelope beyond its limit, right? Even that there is some safety coefficient there. Aircraft can handle a few Gs more, couple knots faster speed, few degrees of bank more. You wouldn’t not do that because it compromises safety of a flight by reducing safety margin.
      Now, what they have done is pushing “human envelope” specified by EASA regs. Same thing applies as in A/C envelope. When you fly above FL100/10000ft without oxygen, it doesn’t mean that you would die. It lowers the safety margin. Pilot is risking his life, life of PAX and people on ground. Those are the things pilot should not intentionally do.
      BTW high lung capacity would not help you much. High altitude hypoxia is due to low parcial pressure of oxygen in alveoli. What would be more important is among of hemoglobin in blood, this would increase oxygen saturation (SpO2).
      I would say on contrary they might thing they know what they are doing, but they clearly do not. They are clearly underestimating danger of hypoxia, either by lack of knowledge or by ignorance. Dangerous thing to do, especially in aviation.
