    Hey guys! I just want to specify that pellets are NOT necessary for rabbits -- they are more of a side dish than anything and can cause weight gain if it's overdone. Lennon only gets a small, controlled amount once a day. Hope you find this information useful!

    I've found that if your rabbit is active you can keep a small bowl of pellets around for them to eat from as they wish. Just be careful, though, as some rabbits, especially if under stimulated, are prone to eating out of boredom and will get fat.

    • @cf2075
      @cf2075 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      like my Fluffy bunny

    • @qawamity
      @qawamity 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Floppy Bunny Nothing wrong with that. Pellets get a bad reputation, mostly due to people giving an endless supply of them to under stimulated, under exercised bunnies. If your bunnies get by without pellets, I say great. So long as they're happy and healthy, they could be eating people and I'd be cool with it.

    I just wanted to say thank you Lorelei for all the information you provide about proper diets and ways to raise rabbits. My Gracie hadn’t had veggies for the first year of her life because I was uninformed about their actual feeding needs. She’s a much happier bunny now and I have you to thank for that. So again, thank you so much and keep it up so more uninformed bunny parents hear you too!

    (this is just for people who are confused and i do know that you do not have to follow this.
    this is just a routine planner from the video)
    8:30am, Breakfast: Spring Veggie Mix, Pellets (depends how old your bunny is)
    12:00pm, Snacks: Apples and Carrots (small amounts of suitable veggies and fruit)
    8:30pm, Dinner: Same as Breakfast, No Pellets
    12:00am, Midnight Snack

    My Stuart eats very little fruit, like twice a week or else his poop goes bad. I cared for another rabbit, Babylynn (neighbor's bun)... she used to have this exact same diet as Lennon and she was fine. But Stuart needs to eat very little sugar. I think it varies from rabbit to rabbit?

  • @oreotookie8848
    @oreotookie8848 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's so similar to what we have fed our bunnies...and our current bunny's diet. Oreo, funny enough, doesn't like fruit except for the papaya square he gets morning and night. (Very small). It USED to be the "go to" food to help bunnies through shedding season. Now the school of thought is that papaya may aid digestion, but it won't get rid of fur in the tummy. But we just give it out of love and habit.
    Lennon is a very fortunate bunny!

    My rabbit turned out to be so severely picky about hay that she wouldn't eat it and she was losing weight due to the complications that caused. I took her to the vet who told me to do the "tough love" route where I can only feed her greens and a very tiny amount of pellets in the morning but nothing but hay the rest of the evening. It helped that I eventually found a brand/type of hay she liked. I also found ways to distribute her food so it lasts a little longer for her: like putting pellets in a ball that distributes them when she pushes it and tucking veggies and pellets in a snuffle-mat. She has gained weight, she eats all her hay now, and seems so much happier. Your videos are invaluable!

    Cabbage can be feeded in big amounts when the rabbits are used to get it. You only have to increase the amount over weeks. Cabbage is by the way not compatible in context with pellets so yeah.. I hope it was useful to write this. It isn't hate, just a remark. And sorry when I wrote something wrong, Iam from germany.

    Hey question, what if I'm not home during the day to give my bunny lunch? (I don't have a rabbit, yet. 😊)

    • @felangie1313
      @felangie1313 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Typically people feed their rabbits twice a day -- once in the morning and once in the evening, so it's OK if you're not home for lunch. Of course if you're not home during the day, be sure to spend time with your rabbit in the morning and evening, as they are social animals and need companionship to be happy. Getting two rabbits is helpful because they can entertain each other when you are not around. Often shelters will have bonded pairs of rabbits ready to go to a good home together. If you get two rabbits separately, it's a whole process to bond them.

    • @ronbeatty516
      @ronbeatty516 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That is no problem. Your rabbit should have timothy hay or orchard grass available to eat 24/7. That is 80% of their diet. The greens are only a very small percentage of their diet.

      My advice is go to your local tractor supply for hay. Since I have horses I go there for their hay a lot. When I got a bunny, I bought a bale of orchard grass hay for my bunny(my horses have a mix of orchard grass and alfalfa). A bale for a bunny lasts about 6 months and its $8-9 per bale. I would also get compressed sawdust pellets as bedding for your bun because its cheap($5.99 for a 40lb bag), safe, and it absorbs pee and keeps odor under control. That'll last you like 2-3 months

      nora the explorer yeah same, my boy bunny usually doesn't eat treats except for forest fruit flavoured ones, he loves that ones, and he usually never eats fruits, he likes veggies more, but I'm not sure about something, Lennon is fed with a lot of veggies, but I don't think it would be good for my bunny, because he can't eat too many, but he would be healthier, what do I do?

My other bunny (a mix breed I think) just has 4 tablespoons in the morning and she will spread out her own meals as she is about 4 years older so she knows better than to eat them all at once.

      Iceberg lettuce is really not okay to give your bunny. It has a ton of water content (causes diarrhea) and almost no nutrients. There's really no point in giving your bunny iceberg.

    • @msb6929
      @msb6929 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey itz Amy!
      please stop feeding you bun iceberg lettuce. Only dark leafy greens such as Romaine lettuce, some kale, dill, parsley, dandilion, some swiss chard, carrot tops, coriander etc. Like mentioned in the video 85 % should be hay. Fresh leafy greens, little fruit, and unlimited water should make up the other 15%. I used to feed my bunny pellets, however, I stopped that since he was preferring pellets to hay which caused teeth problems.

    My rabbit does not eat much hay. A little timothy, occasionally. But he will eat timothy pellets. He will not touch orchard hay at all. I rarely give alfalfa, but if I do, only in the compressed block so he can chew it for his teeth. If your rabbit will not touch the hay but is okay with the pellets, just make sure you have something he can chew to wear down his teeth.

    But he definitely loves his veggies and hay. However I think I'm sensitive to the Timothy hay. My skin breaks out when ever I handle it and I sneeze like crazy. So I definitely will look into the orchard hay. 😊
    Great video as always 😊💕

    Dry hay or grass should be available all day. I might have missed that statement in the video... It's great that you showed how little of fruit that rabbits should have, if any. Sugars are not great for their gut flora/bacteria but ok if done very sparingly. My rabbits Minnie and Peanut give their regards to Lennon. I'm their friend and veterinarian. :-)

    Hello! Just wanted to note that according to rabbit.org, excessive spinach isn't good for rabbits because it contains oxalic acid that harms them over time. Here's some of the article: "Many plants contain a naturally occurring chemicals called an alkaloids, which are mild toxins that protect plant in the wild. The one most talked about with rabbits is oxalic acid and it is completely harmless to animals or humans when consumed in small amounts. The amount of oxalic acid within each plant can vary significantly due to several factors including the composition of the soil the plant grew in, the time of year and the age of the plant. Most of the fresh vegetables we feed rabbits have a low to zero level of oxalic acid, but a few, most notably parsley, mustard greens and spinach have relatively high levels." Obviously you know your bunny best but I just wanted to see if you've heard this and have any extra background knowledge. Thanks!

    I used to put my rabbit's water in a Tupperware(light plastic container) and when ever I come to clean her cage, her water was tipped over. Once it was thrown onto her tunnel.😅 This all resulted me to using my childhood plastic, but heavy for her to tip,bowl (RIP strawberry shortcake bowl that has been with me for 10 years, I'm 11 now). And now it's all good. No more wasted water on carpet! Yay..

    Hi I just found you on TH-cam and I love your rabbit advise. We got a rabbit in June approx 8 weeks old. She is approx 4 1/2 months old and has grown bigger! At what age can we give her bananas, carrots, apples etc? Also, we have a blanket over her large cage and she pulls it in to lay on. She hasn’t chewed it do you think it’s ok to give her a smaller fleece (or what material do you recommend) blanket for her shelf bed? Thank you in advance!! I’ve learned a lot of what nots from your videos and I’m in the process of changing what the pet store recommended for my Mabel Bell!

    Be very careful about fruits like bananas - they are quite starchy and can upset a rabbit's digestive system. My bunnies LOVE bananas, but I only give them a tiny piece once 1-2 weeks because it's just not good for their gut. Rabbits GI tract is super sensitive & bananas are not something they normally would eat in the wild. My Petey is prone to stasis, so I don't give him bananas because it can set it off. My buns are both over 10 years old now and doing great :)

      My bunnies are under 6 months. No matter how much I feed them they are hungry. I usually give them food four times a day. Last meal at 10:30 pm.
      Lots of hay. Green leafy vegetables. Herbs. Cabbage. And carrots. Mostly.
      Am I doing good ?
