Personally i felt like the difficulty spiked at random intervals instead of having a more steady increase as the game went on, with some puzzles being really challenging but immediately followed by a puzzle i solved in five minutes
I think it’s had a good difficulty progression contained within the chapters. The last chamber was always the hardest and first chamber was the easiest and it scaled correctly.
Tbh I thought it was a pretty enjoyable experience. I do agree that there were some weird difficulty spikes in very specific chambers, and that some of the more open parts of the game felt a bit walking-simulator-ish. But other than that I honestly loved the environment design and graphics. The surface sections look really good.
I really liked this mod, and I don't have anything negative to say about it. I totally agree that Emilia is anlikeable character. She's relatably clumsy and fun.
The one thing that reallt annoyed me was the fact that there would be a "chapter" for each new element, and thats it. 5-6 chambers of the new element and thats it, and most of them are pretty easy. Definently couldve made more chambers with multiple elementa
Exactly what I was thinking. Combining multiple new mechanics would’ve been a lot more challenging and fun. Most of the new mechanics show up and then don’t come back
i think the difficulty was very on par with portal 2, with 2-3 puzzles inducing some real temple-rubbing. Totally fine in that department. Btw in test chamber 14 I got creative and did the room without using power-off cause I never figured out how to. I uploaded a short clip of my solution
I have no clue why the whole internet blew up over this mod. It is good, it is cool, but next Portal 3? I mean, has anyone seen Portal Stories Mel? It is there, out, for some time now. (oh and Aperture Tag, but it's not really "Portal" type of Portal game so yeah)
For me it was the games trailer that hyped it up so much. It’s hard not be excited since Valve won’t make Portal 3 we have to wait for the next big mod
I feel like this shouldnt be rated this low, imo it actually trades places with mel. Mel having a better story, but the mapping and puzzle design being way better for revolution in my opinion. Strata Source (this engine) also really pushed up the quality of this mod too, with less loading times and better graphics. I'd also like to point out that a lot of the better graphics were actually made by the revo team themself, as an addition to strata.
@@KeenangrazHave you ever heard of Portal 2 Repercussions btw. ? Its a mod that has been on hold for over 4 years now, and is probably cancelled by now which was sadly never announced. But it looks SO gorgeous.

Well, Portal 2: Desolation is still in development and it looks REALLY good so far! I don't know if Portal: Revolution will be the *ultimate* mod, but it definitely will be my second favourite currently, and second least favourite currently... I've only played 3 mods so far.
havent seen a mod this good since Enderal. Every new gameplay mechanic they introduced fits in the game seemlessly, as though valve made them canonically themselves.
It was definitely fun and It feels bad to be complaining about free stuff made out of love for Portal 2. But saying that, it was kinda disappointing in terms of puzzle solving, it's a complicated thing, specially considering all the portal puzzles I have completed. I expected it to be easy but sometimes it felt too straightforward, in the sense that many puzzles just had the appearance of complexity but are at the end just 3 simple puzzles one after another. Not all of them where like that but considering the amount of time you spend in walking rail puzzles (the actual fake puzzles for story reasons), having a couple of "fake" puzzles that were supposed to real puzzles feels really bad. Being so closely related to Portal 2 story structure also was a pretty bad idea, its so easy to compare both of these games making apparent the flaws of this game even more. (Wich while being an unfair comparison you subconsciously make it by design) The new mechanics weren't the best really, they felt very level dependant (except for the new laser cubes), and because of that they aren't really utilized to their full potential. In many ways, is too similar to Portal 2 even when it's bad. The difference being that portal 2 had the Wheatley's levels, where they combine most mechanics and make some pretty challenging levels, this game really needed some chapter like that, the game starts with Wheatley's level difficulty, but only occasionally and never really upgrades beyond that. An extra chapter before the end could also solve the rough edges of the story, Sterling goes from a companion to trying to kill you pretty much out of nowhere. Yeah, it may have listened to your conversation about stopping Glados restoration, but for such a heavy dialogue game, it's weird to not put that realization in full view. The visuals were great and the voice acting was amazing. I just wish I didn't feel like playing a worse version of Portal 2. Between the progression structure, to the long walks when an important story beat happened, to the mandatory introduction turret level, to the giant only white gel room, etc... I just wish the game should have searched more for its own style rather than redoing things from the main game.
The biggest issue for me was the writing. It contradicts the lore of portal and the finale it’s really unsatisfying. And I really liked the new reflection cube mechanic but i prefer the chambers with no new mechanics as they were harder and more interesting than to the new mechanics.
I was expecting more complex puzzles, and yeah the writing is really straightforward, not a lot of jokes or side things. Even for the secrets, it was lacking a lot of secret rooms to explore, just for the lore like Portal 2 or Mel.
@@Keenangraz wondering what portal mod you think provides the most cognitive challenges in unique ways? I want to have some brain game, and it seems some portal mod is the best out there as it incorporates 3d visualization and manipulation instead of only looking at 2d objects (e.g. Elevate app)
I genually did enjoy the writing. It wasn't perfect but the joke did put a smile on a face. And that's all you need to do. But I think most of the new mechanic should have been used more test chamber. So many possibilities
What really killed Revolution for me was the comparisons it elicited; it uses the same time frame as Mel, and has the same feel to it with the going in and out of the testing tracks. The problem is it just isn’t as good. The characters aren’t as interesting, the puzzles aren’t as nuanced, and the new mechanics are cool but poorly executed. Portal Stories: Mel feels so much more faithful to the source material, and so problematically, I can’t help but see this as a worse prequel to portal 2. On its own, it’s good, I just can’t help but see it in second place at this point.
That’s exactly how I felt. It did everything decently enough to be an enjoyable experience, it’s just not as good in comparison to other great Portal mods. Keeps Revolution from having a strong identity
It wasn't bad, i just wish i hadn't played so many community test chambers before and had played this after playing Portal 2. It was easy, and the story wasn't the best either.

portal revolution is amazing aside from the writing, which is just kind of eh at times. it feels like a whole new game like portal: mel and i loved it and all its new features
I wouldn't say so. It may be good for the newcomers but it really was a letdown in puzzle quality for the experienced players. Having cube respawning, aswell as cube swapping introduced in the first chapter only for both never to be used again, no other "advanced moves" getting used. the puzzle difficulty gradually got easier the longer the game went on atleast in my eyes. The last puzzle didn't even need the shrodingers cube to be solved you could have just used a regular cube. The ending is also pretty meh. I don't like how the went to this whole sterling is a vacuum cleaner haha funny plot. It took the seriousness of what he tried to achieve and the ending was also pretty dissapointing in my eyes. It's still a good 7/10 for me though.
