  • I think that I've had this little model for over a year now. I have been meaning to do it up so that it can share a place on my shelf next to it's non-identical twin, the 'Rentaset' Model which I did in the past.
I have had the decals and the reproduction parts for ages but could never get motivated as I always like to try something new, and the fact that I had done almost the exact model before!
I thought I would just do it and get it off by bucket list and on display where it belongs. The problems that I had, however, did not make this the simple makeover that I thought it would be! - I may have to revisit this one in the future to make sure that it cuts the grade because as it is at the moment it is not my most treasured model.
Hope you like the show. Marty.

I like watching these videos when I have the time. I have 60 or so original 1960’s matchbox cars in two original cases and at least 40 are in excellent condition. There are a few that need restoration and I am tempted to try your techniques.

Marty - I wouldn't worry about the kerbside decal not being 100% - a little occasional hiccup is what a collector in years to come will find adds value to your work! Imperfect examples of all kids of things are often extremely valuable on the collectors markets... don't beat yourself up over it.

Great restoration, as always! A tip that may help though: Make a checklist of all the things going into a particular restoration beforehand and thoroughly inspect the model for damage and flaws. You may have noticed the dented front bumper before you started, and if the item was listed there is no chance of skipping that step once you get to it. You are one of the undisputed masters of diecast restoration on TH-cam, but mistakes are what makes us all distinctly human.

Nice job on the restoration!! Most of my TH-cam and other internet activity involves the restoration of antique radios. It's becoming quite evident that terrestrial commercial broadcast radio, is dying, in virtually every corner of the world. Maybe not in my lifetime, however, my son and daughter are in their thirties, and I'm certain that they will bear witness to the days when the last radio station on earth says "goodbye, it's been a great 130 years.

  • @kjamison5951
    @kjamison5951 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Marty!
    Just two things.
As you said, it’s always better to add darker colours to lighter colours. Otherwise, a lot of the lighter colour is used to ‘dilute’ the saturation of the darker colour..
And adding the green is a great alternative to using black to darken a paint colour.
I would suggest that viewers learn about the ‘colour wheel’ and ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ colours.
As the paint mixing progresses, it becomes obvious if the colour needs ‘warmed up’ or ‘cooled down’.
22 years working in education with the last 7 in Art & Design taught new a lot about patience and colours (hues).

Firstly, and i think i speak for all your subscribers when i say, there is no ‘on time’! Your videos are ready when they are ready. If they are delayed because you have to restart so be it. They are your models so don’t rush them for us viewers!
Secondly. Are you 100% certain the van has been damaged, having looked i reckon its a casting defect from when it was new. So its original to that model.

I once had my ladder fall down while I was up on my roof blowing leaves out of the rain gutters.....the ladder was just resting against the edge of the roof, and it was a gusty windy day. No Koala to blame. I foresaw an ordeal of standing on the roof yelling in hopes that a neighbor or passerby would notice and come put the ladder back up. Luckily, I had used a long rope to pull the blower up to the roof after I climbed up there, and I had tied one end of the rope to the top rung of the ladder, and stuck the other end of the rope into the downspout to keep it in place. I was able to pull the ladder back up by that means, although as it was an extension ladder, there was a risk of the bottom half sliding off as I pulled it back up. Ever since then, I use two large double-sided Velcro straps, wrapped around the ladder joint, to keep the two halves locked together, and two strong spring clamps and a short bungee cord to lash the top of the ladder to the edge of the roof, or the rain gutter, to prevent recurrence.
    Nice Matchbox vid, though.....

dont worry about the imperfect bumper on the model it adds character and allows you to image a story about how it happened.

Hi, re mixing paints. I used to make up large batches of paint for my models as for some of my projects I needed to do multiple versions. I used to use 35 mm camera film case's. These are air tight and the paint lasts ages when stored in them. Easily found on eBay.

Great idea Dean, I might try to get some and then I could label the pots with the model number!

Hello Marty, I knew, ( or assumed ) something was off right from the start. You were all into your serious professor mode. It’s hard being a perfectionist. Especially when you are on a time table, real or perceived. So chill out. All is well. Life is full of small imperfections. Be happy. See ya next week for the unboxing. Bye.

This is why I couldn’t do this for a hobby. I’m too much of an OCD perfectionist to notice a flaw and not start all over again. And I’d find plenty of flaws

Marty, I think we will see this model on your table again, just to fix the front bumper and the decals as well.
Can't nearly believe that you did not have seen the damage at the front, but I know this is just a small model, and small things sometimes need a while to be seen. But as soon as you have seen it, you won't see anything else. So I understand that you are not happy with how this model turns out at the end.
But you did a good job on it, and I'm really impressed by how you match the original colors so perfectly all the time and able to nail it always, but I know this is something that needs a lot of experience to get them in this original color shape.
So for me, it is another well-done model which turns out a lot better now than before. It looks great now, and so I like it the most because of its imperfection. It just reminds us that humans are not perfect at all and that this is not a mistake, it is just human.
I have learned one day, that we need to try for 100 %, so we happily may get out 99 %. Because if we just try to get 50 %, we will get even less.
You are giving your one hundred percent to these little models, but you live with your imperfections as anybody else does. So these things will happen. Just not be angry about your imperfection, just laugh and love this little car even more. Go and find another one to make it perfect, but leave this as it is since it is a unique now. I am sure, you will get one in one of your future fan mails.

Someone backed into the bumper in the parking lot before you bought it. No sweat. Good Job!
