Besides the action scenes, my favorite part of this movie is Henry Czerny as Kittridge. Pretty much steals every scene he's in. The way he enunciates his words; he sounds like a sinister airline pilot. Haha.

ColdCutz "I want him manning a radar tower in Alaska by the end of the day. Just mail him his clothes." Haha, awesome line and delivery. There's also something amusing in the way he condescends to Barnes all the time. I didn't think anyone could talk to Dale Dye that way. Wish they would bring Kittridge back for a sequel.

As a child I was for whatever reason really spooked out by the beginning where all the characters get killed. Watching the film again I was really surprised by how haunting some of those scenes still are, with all the fog and good lighting. Brian De Palma really knows his shit when it comes to visuals.

Agree totally. Feels like a team movie rather than just an Ethan Hunt movie. All the set-ups were great & direction was masterful. With each entry & in particular Rogue Nation onwards it has become more of a stunt/action oriented franchise rather than this intricate group adventure, which I particularly liked. So, the first movie is my favourite of all MI movies.

Oliver, brilliant as always. Totally agree. The original will always be the best. De Palma is just amazing with artistic cinematography & camera work. It's modern day Hitchcock with him & always builds subtle suspense, without it looking too explosive & chaotic. I did like Rogue Nation though, because it seemed to go back to the original spy look. Above all the MI franchise has proven how absolutely adept Cruise is as a producer, how completely he understand his own limitations, his strengths and his image. The fact that such a hoary formula is still going very strong indeed (has survived and outlasted Damon's Bourne and Craig's Bond) show's how well he grasps his audience.
By the time the next Cold War starts (if it hasn't started already) the MI franchise will be totally fashionable again.

    • @cloudtx

Mission: Impossible II didn't feel like a Mission: Impossible film at all, but more of the lines of a James Bond film from the Brosnan era and since that is considered to be one of the weaker eras of that franchise, that is saying something.

  • @JustinMcVicar
    @JustinMcVicar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

For me personally, I loved the second movie as much as the first. Granted, the second movie didn't have much of a plot. But the action scenes did create a sense of tension. The main issue I have, is the overuse of slow motion. Those slow motions scenes, where Tom and Thandie's characters are gazing into each other eyes were hilarious.
For me, the weakest was the 3rd movie. Mainly because it just seemed to be a fan service reboot. And the whole idea of the Rabit's Foot, was annoying. Hoffman's part, however, was outstanding.
Ghost protocol was awesome! Larry Bird is a brilliant director. The actions scenes were amazing, and weren't over the top at all. The humour was the perfect amount. It is hilariously ironic, how much he paid homage to the movie series in The Incredibles, and ended up directing one.

  • @KRSsven

I think you're exactly right about Tom Cruise - even when he's putting in a great performance, it's still just Tom Cruise. He's made such a name of himself (negatively as much as positively with his maniac period and Scientology) that people only see the actor. For example I love War of the Worlds, but Cruise is such a big name that it was difficult to get invested in his character. Many actors have fallen into the pattern of being so huge it doesn't really matter what film they're in - such as Cruise, Will Smith, and Nicole Kidman among others. Other, better actors can cut through their star-name pull and actually show their true acting ability (George Clooney has been in this bracket for a number of years by carefully choosing what he's in).

We don’t talk enough about how odd this movie actually is in its production. Okay, Tom Cruise as star and producer. Makes sense. Adaptation of a semi-popular IP. Makes sense. The original main character “dies” early on and is also the villain? Okay… directed by Brian De Palma of Carrie and Blow Out? Also odd, but I suppose The Untouchables had come out, he can do action. Written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park), Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) and Robert Towne (Chinatown). Um, huh? And the main action set piece is a mostly silent scene in which Tom Cruise dangles from the ceiling on a wire. Like, what is this movie? And why is it the best Mission: Impossible?

Mission Inpossible is such a great film.I loved the villains' theme in MI:2. Definitely a John Woo film.MI:3 is my favorite. It was more of a team film and Philip Seymour Hoffman's villain is still unmatched in my opinion. Admittedly the film is missing something that the first film has.

I agree, oliver. The first is still the best, and it is because of the plot which is one of the best seen in a spy films. Part two is the weakest, I was very disappointed when I saw it. Other parts then were good entertainment, but far from the first plot. It is true that Tom Cruise's role in the film industry is already so iconic that he has become a man, who plays Cruise. But he is, however, really always a pleasure to watch. And can expect that there will be good entertainment.
Thank you again for the excellent job, Oliver.

I finally gave this one a full watch through in doing my franchise re-watch ahead of Dead Reckoning Part One, and it was very impressive. The 4K does a great amount of justice. It might feel a little 90's at times, but despite the conflicts on set, De Palma delivers the most paranoid thriller of the franchise. It does require tight attention to weave through the plot, and the point where Hunt is thinking one thing but saying another took a rewind to start grasping the filmmaking intentions there. So, maybe on a first watch it gets a little tangled, but it's truly a superb thriller with smart sequences and clever storytelling to make it feel like a noir espionage mystery. I need more De Palma in my life! I believe he did speak more in-depth in his "De Palma" documentary a few years ago about the problems on this film. I'll have to watch that full doc eventually.

Good movie, but the original tv show is brilliant. Sure it didn't even have a third of the budget of the Tom Cruise movies, but it made up for it with amazing intricate plots and a really strong cast -- particularly in the first three seasons. The series was created by a real ex-intelligence agent, so it revolved around mind game operations "brains over brawn" which is the polar opposite of the movies... with the 1996 movie being an exception in some ways.

Simon Pegg wasn't the original casting choice for MI:III. Ricky Gervais had been cast for the role due to him just hitting it big in the US and coming to the attention of Cruise. Because of significant delays due to script problems Gervais dropped out, along with Kenneth Branagh, Carrie-Anne Moss, Scarlett Johansson, and director Joe Carnahan.
Now that would've been an interesting film, but nevertheless a very lucky break for Pegg.

I kinda like MI2. It’s just John Woo distilled, and it didn’t bore me in the slightest. J.J. Abrams is a terrible director imo, and I always hated the casting of Simon Pegg. He’s just there for bathos - not clever wit. Phillip S. Hoffman is incredible, though. What a giant he was. Rip.

i watched it, and haven't watched another in the franchise.
It was a good film BUT, it's funny how all those who complain about the destruction of the character of Luke Skywalker in the sequel Star Wars films never said a peep about how this film sh*ts all over the character of Jim Phelps.
Jim Phelps who was 100% loyal to his team, and they were to him.
In one episode one of the team is captured, and he develops an off the cuff plan to rescue her, which the rest of the team had faith in.
He was late arriving at an off-mission get together, and out of concern the team tracked him down, and developed plan to rescue him.
Heck.. he even came out of retirement to put together a team after his friend and protégé was killed.
Sorry, but making Jim Phelps the villain was an unnecessary twist of expectations. [They could have had a different set up, where Jim was a double-double agent, and at the end he gets seriously injured, forcing him to retire, and Nathan Hunt 'fiddles' the bad guy computer to sequester funds to a black list account that Jim could then access.
Instead they went for character assassination.
What next, George Smiley turning out to be actual control of Gerald????
as I said, if it hadn't been Mission: Impossible I'd have no qualms. if Jim Phelps had been a different character, no problem. But for me personally, what they did killed the concept for me.
And please, this is my PERSONAL view and fully appreciate that others think changing the tone of an established franchise is acceptable, just allow me to prefer consistency in what I enjoy.

MI2 is considered the worst in the series? REALLY? Humm, honestly that's the one I liked the best. But perhaps that's because that's when I was riding motorcycles a lot & was influenced by the Hans Zimmer score & all of those 'evil 2 wheel death machines' & seeing all of that on the big screen was an exciting thing- lol. I have fond memories of MI2-

  • @Elementa2006

I never got into the Mission Impossible films until Ghost Protocol, the first three films didn't do it for me but the current films since GP have been great and fully captured what gave the show its identity, the "team dynamic", which has been less emphasized in the earlier films especially 2 that it became more about Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt instead of the IMF team.
The first film isn't bad but that moment when they turned the Jim Phelps character from the TV series into a villain was unnecessary, they could have used a different character but instead they decided to spit in the face of fans of the TV series who were excited for a MI movie. You might be thinking that I'm taking this too seriously, well imagine if they made a Star Trek movie and they revealed that Kirk or Spock was the villain in order to push the character created for the movie as the main star of the franchise, yeah I doubt people would give him a pass and don't me the "but nobody care about the MI TV show", well people cared enough to attempt an 80's revival series and an actual movie based on the show. Seriously if the original actor who played the character felt this was the betrayal of the character then that should be a sign that this was a bad idea that's even worse than some fanfiction.
Personally, my headcanon is that this Jim Phelps wasn't the same Phelps but possibly a replacement using his name as a codename or the films take place in a separate continuity from the show.

Great review as always, the only thing I disagree is that I love more the sequels from 3 to 5 (Ghost Protocol been my favorite of all) way more than this film, I kinda hate this one as a kid because the same reasons of the actors and fans of the old show, the treatment of Jim Phelps make me hate this movie the first time I watched and the complicate plot was too much for my little mind back them, I watched then again more grow up and I enjoy it way better, able to see all the details in the big plot and I realize how great this movie really was, I still today like this film a lot, but it's not nearly as fun as 3,4 or 5 in my humble opinion, anyway still agree with this review a lot, love the effort you always put in gain all the technical details of the production and reception of the film.

I am with you on the charm of the 1st movie. I was amazed back in 96 watching this on big screen. I watched the tv series after that and that feels totally different. I can however understand the show fans being annoyed with Jim Phelps being the bad guy. I also hated MI2 and loved MI3 mainly as that also operated as a team movie as opposed to Tom doing his magic. MI4 had one amazing scene in Dubai but I did not care for the bad guy. MI5 was better and MI6 was even better due to Cavill. But overall I am nostalgic for the 1st movie more than others. Nice Retrospective/Review.

I hated what Tom Cruise did with the first film by making Jim Phelps the bad guy. It's the equivalent of making Indiana Jones a Nazi or Captain Kirk a Klingon. It just shouldn't be done. It's very obvious why he did it. He took a well known spy property with name recognition and an awesome theme song and turned it into his own James Bond series. Which was all but confirmed with the sequel. M:I-2 is just a blatant ripoff of Bond and even steals a car chase from GoldenEye. After the 2nd film I was done with the franchise. Thankfully J.J. Abrams rescued the series and the last three films have all been excellent and redeemed the series in my eyes. Now if they could only retcon out Jim as a villain and restore his good name.

    Those aren't doves, they're pigeons.
When Cruise kicks the guy in the face on the beach he actually kicks him in the face. You can see Cruise going "Oh shit" at the end of the shot if you watch him.
Initially M:I-2 received better reviews than the first. Ebert said it was "much better than the first one" and critics like Mick LaSalle (who trashed the first one) and James Berardinelli gave it positive reviews.
The switch of directors and styles is one of the series's strengths. Cruise is someone who values what a director brings to films (having worked with many of the modern greats) and wants each of them to put their stamp on the film, unlike a MacDonald's francise of films like Marvel.

I think the main problem with M:I-2 is that John Woo doesn't direct sequals so he was given opportunity to direct it as a stand alone film called Mission: Impossible 2. And so it feels like it has nothing to do with the original movie. Stupid decision although John Woo made a good film. It just doesn't feel like a Mission: Impossible movie.

I went to see the film at the cinema and I tend to agree with Martin Landau when he said that it was a great film but it's not Mission Impossible. It's as if they took a typical spy/action thriller and added just enough to make it look like it was a tie in to the original series but it doesn't feel anything like it to me.
For me the best movie version of the Mission Impossible tv series was Chris Nolan's Inception, which got the concept right and added a few layers but the foundation of it was very much akin to a Mission Impossible episode.

I wish I could like these movies, I do, but I just cannot. The first was boring, the second was the same, third showed possibilities, but is still forgettable. Fourth...for all the set pieces, I just didn't care.
I was a fan of the TV show, even the rebooted series was fun. I just felt that the IMF team, in the first movie, would not have fallen for such an easy mole job, that they team do in the film.

People say Tom Cruise was too small to play Jack Reacher and Hugh Jackman was too tall to play Wolverine so imagine if they had swapped roles as in if Jack Reacher had come out at the same time as the First X-Men.
I'm sure there's an alternate reality where that happened.
