    Some Star wars collectors will never be happy. They are only worried about the value of their toys. They are not enjoying the toys for what they are, only an investment. And that is why they don't like to see reproductions of anything. It hurts their investment. What I do showing how to repair old toys really winds them up. Just search for my name in any of these groups and you will see some real hate!

      Toy Polloi, you're doing SO MUCH more for the hobby than the snobby speculators who are happy to determine who is - and who isn't - a 'real Star Wars fan'. Your passion for restoring and resuscitating old toys (and enthusiasm for rescuing ageing, much-loved plastic refugees from a million spent childhoods) is what will keep the hobby alive - rather than turning it into another avenue for investment and speculation.

      I agree for a lot of collectors it has become about the investment. It is really sad that a toy can not be enjoyed for what it is meant to me.

    Repro “problem” is only a “problem” to people who collect as an investment, to me I just want a complete looking figure so repro is a solution to the real problem, that original weapons etc are just stupidly over priced purely to make money

    • @The82bstewart
      @The82bstewart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly.. Nobody cares about repo's when your collecting a line thats cheap.. An they where all cheap to collect for at some point in time. Its only after they shoot up to crazy high prices that people start getting butt hurt. When I started collecting I did it because I wanted all the figures I had or wanted and never got as a child. The cheaper I could find em the better. The only problem was finding em.. Cause there was no ebay at that time. So I had to go out and have a lot of fun hunting down things at flea markets and yardsale adventures.

      It's a problem when you're a VINTAGE collector, and the only way to ensure that you're getting a VINTAGE weapon with your figure is to buy graded and crack it open. Nothing to do with value, all to do with actually wanting vintage items, and not newly made fakes.

    • @The82bstewart
      @The82bstewart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JoeSuspectOI I would disagree with that.. just pay up and only buy graded figures or vintage carded figures.. Or purchase figures from reputable dealers or collectors you know that have legit stuff. Stop trying to buy vintage figures online or on ebay. that you find you. As long as people are paying big money for anything there is gonna be bootlegs. People have tried to stop bootleggers forever with little to no success. I've also listened to other collectors fuss because it kills the value of there collection they spent years to put together..When I asked them if they would sell their collection.. the answer is most often No.. If your never gonna sell the stuff what difference does the value make anyway? We got bigger more important battles to fight in life then worrying so much about bootleg little plastic figures. It often takes a terrible tragedy like a child being diagnosed with cancer for people to suddenly stop caring about frivolous things and have life put back into perspective for them.

      @@The82bstewart We're not talking about vintage bootlegs. Those would never be mistaken for the real thing. We're talking about the scum that are trying to make their repro junk indistinguishable from real vintage. It's this kind of elitism that started the 'grading' madness. I guess people who can't afford a 400€ mint on card graded figure are also buying the wrong stuff.

      Some of my figures hold the beautifully detailed repro guns that are intended for LEGO Minifigs, which are out of scale with the minifigs, but perfect for 3.75" figures. Where else could I find a 'Blade Runner' blaster for a custom Deckard figure I made, or a 1898 pattern 'Broomhandle' Mauser for a 'Rocketeer' figure? Does this bother me? Not in the slightest. @@Dylanio21 Absolutely! It's certainly wonderful to receive a complete vintage toy, but there's also a terrific feeling of accomplishment when you restore a vintage toy with ingenuity and passion. Indeed, I probably prefer the latter - as you learn so much more about the manufacturing and engineering of mass produced toys in doing so. It's something that you would never experience if you're spending big $$$ to collect only graded and complete pieces. Disassembling a vintage figure to wash and clean, or trying to fix yellowing plastic, is in education in itself.

    If you want to collect Vintage - collect Vintage. If you want to collect Repro - collect Repro. If you want to mix and match - mix and match. I don't see how this is anyone else's business. The only thing that might arise is people passing off Repro as Vintage, in which case support the people who are transparent about it, and it's one area the community can actually help each other out with knowledge. Hasbro have now reissued Star Wars figures. They reissue Transformers. I don't see Repro as being much different to that.

    Tony, I highly enjoy your channel. Watching your videos takes me back to 1974 when I was first exposed to Adventure Team/Action Man, in this country called Action Team and made by Schildkröt and 1978 when Star Wars premiered in Germany and I first saw the Kenner action figures in our local toy store.
    I don't consider myself a collector and I'm not buying toys to leave them packaged and to worship their value. I enjoy toys for what they are: playthings to pose, handle and make myself happy with.
    If I decide to buy a figure I had when I was a boy and it has a repro weapon...I couldn't care less as it's not the very same figure I previously owned, just one like it.
    As a customizer, basically all my figures are super-articulated, modern action figures anyway.
    I'm glad that I don't have to concern myself with these people who place the value of their collectibles over their childhood memories. They have those packaged, graded, untouched blobs of plastic with no happy memories attached to them.
    Actually, I think we should feel sorry for them.
    Please keep up the good work and enjoy analog toys!

Should I not have bought that record as it's not original, so it's "counterfeit"? Should we only listen to records that are first pressing? I have zero problem with the existence or sales of repro. I think it’s wonderful to have options for collecting on a budget. I’ll likely never be able to afford a genuine vinyl-caped Jawa, but I thoroughly enjoy the reproduction cape I bought. I prefer vintage, but in a few cases I buy reproduction or custom stuff that I like. It’s all about what brings me joy. I have no obligation whatsoever to maintaining the value of others’ collections by curbing my own purchasing habits. The problem is not the manufacture or sale of reproductions, but rather the dishonest practice of trying to pass them off as genuine. Each collector should be able to enjoy his/her collection as they like.

    My favorite thing about collecting is restoring old stuff to it's former glory . Obviously there aren't enough genuine parts for everyone to restore their old toys so someone has to make more parts so other collectors can feel the same satisfaction . For most of use money = time working and time is so very precious . "Blue snaggletooths for everyone" I say. The real value is how the object makes you feel not the re-sale.

    Repros dont bother me at all. It's a good thing, that while I'm missing a few of the vintage figures I grew up with, I managed to hold onto the original accessories.

  • @RMAILLER

    I'm from México and I have several star wars figures from my childhood and they are originals even if they have the Lili Ledy brand on them just because Kenner sold them the rights to produce them, that said Lili Ledy didn't sell several figures and vehicles from the star wars line that were made in the US, so if I find a "repro" of course I'm gonna get it, I will not spend hundreds of dollars for a vintage figure if I can have one that looks like the original and cheaper just to put in display. And I agree with all your comments and I can understand you, those kind of star wars fans are shortsighted and they are not collectors, they are people who only like the value of the figures and brag about how much they cost them and that they have them, they just like the value like Toy Polloi said... BTW: thanks to Toy Pollo and you I found my love for my vintage toys again, Thanks both of you.

    I just came across this channel while researching reproduction parts and felt compelled to respond from a reproducers point of view, I currently 3d print some obsolete parts for the Raleigh chopper and recently started 3D modelling original Star Wars accessories with the intention of selling them on my website, I think it’s important that the parts look and fit exactly like the originals and allow collectors to build and finish there collections without paying hefty originals prices. I’m not a collector but I am a fan of Star Wars along with many other programs from the 80s. I love the fact that people spend so much time restoring these toys back to their former glory. I’m looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    Spot on Tony. Every hobby has its elitists. Mine's painting miniatures, Games Workshop, Reaper and others, and it's the same. Can't afford Citadel paint? Heretic. Not willing/able to shell out $15-25 per brush for Windsor and Newton? You're either a scrub or just low rent. With prices increasing across the hobby, with some exceptions, it's harder for the youngsters starting out, and this attitude is even less helpful.

  • @YoJoeBanjo
    @YoJoeBanjo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Man, your take on this hobby is so refreshing. The fact that an alternative exists, does not diminish the value or relevance of the original. If anything, it makes the original more valuable. Collecting to recapture the experience of play and joy that we once felt as kids has always been my motivation, not necessarily ownership of the 'one true thing'. That aspect is still there of course, but a repro part may allow me to fulfill my nerd-need quicker and cheaper, and I'm still having fun, reliving my childhood, for whatever amount of money I feel the need to spend.

    TMNT collectors like me are generally accepting of reproductions. Playmates toys re-released the original four turtles,splinter,shredder,krang and a few other figures as part of the series anniversary a few years ago and they were actually pretty good! They even used the moulds from 80's for not just the figure but the weapon's too. Don't get me wrong they did have a few paint issues but don't most figures? It just annoys me when collectors act so elitist and uptight about repros. If you want to collect pure vintage then go ahead just leave others who may have to buy vintage for financial or other reasons like me.

    I do love the message you have shared on this video. As a collector of vintage dolls and other toys, I do have several originals on my collection. A big part of my collection is comprised of vintage Barbie. Now I certainly can't afford a number one (sold for $1.8 million dollars), but I am perfectly happy with my repro. She fits in the collection and I do enjoy her. Collecting is supposed to be a personal experience and it should bring joy to the owner. I say as long as people enjoy their collection and they are proud of it; it is nobody's business how they can afford it. Live and let live!

    I wanted to collect 3.75" Star Wars figures but I couldn't afford the vintage line so I just opted to collect POTF2 instead. A great selection of characters - better in many respects than the vintage line - and some really nice figures and sculpts once they got out of the initial He-Man phase where everyone had to be super buff. And the figures can be had for next to nothing as they have never had the same nostalgic appeal to collectors as the vintage toys.
    If you just want to build up a nice collection of SW figures without spending a lot of money or running the risk of accidentally getting caught out by repros, I'd advise anyone to get into the line. Of course if you're specifically wanting to collect the vintage line because you have a childhood attachment to it then POTF2 won't scratch that itch but for everyone else I'd recommend it without hesitation.

    I grew up in the 1970s-80s and made a point to keep as many of my original Star Wars action figures as I could. Some are worse for wear, and none of the vehicles survived. Of course, over the years, weapons and accessories, as small as they are, get lost. It’s nice to see someone providing a replacement for them that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. As for repro figures, as long as you’re being honest about it, what’s the big deal. The fact that someone buys a brand new repro C-3PO in no way affects the original C-3PO I kept from childhood. I’m not sure I would buy a repro figure myself, but that’s my personal choice. If someone else gets pleasure from knowingly buying repros, then why should anyone rain on his or her parade?

    Fantastic analysis I think! I just started joining some vintage and bootleg collectors groups and have encountered so many posts bashing anyone making reproduction parts/figures. It's really unfortunate to see so many people looking down on anyone who chooses to collect a different way than they do. I personally can't afford/don't care to collect complete/mint figures! I appreciate the approach Toy Polloi takes on figures and I tend to collect Flea Market figures.
    Hopefully more people can simply learn to enjoy collecting what they enjoy the way they enjoy it and let the other folks collect and enjoy what they like :)

    Tony,
    You just make me love your channel more and more!👍
    Now first of all Ebay having anything to do with reproduction toys is frankly laughable.😂
    Listen people it is simple.
    1. Do your research, ask questions.
    2. Only buy from trusted sellers with good feedback.
    It is that simple! Now from time to time a person may accidentally get burned! It happens to all of us no matter how well you plan. It is life! Don’t let a few negative people and things get you down. Most of us collect vintage toys to recapture the FUN of our youth. The second it does not do that move on.
    Example I still need and want a vintage Blue Snaggletooth. I have seen the prices and I know I will pay dearly to acquire one. I also love the new Smith Lord Creations Blue Snaggletooth!👍
    In fact I would love to have both in my collection for comparison. Thanks Tony for always being real and telling us how you feel Brother.

    There is a similar kind of thing happened in the comic book world. First it was $1 reprints which are classic rare books that have been reprinted but on better glossy paper with new “Ad’s”. Then they have “Facsimiles” which are exact reprints with original old Ad’s on glossy paper. The only difference between Facsimile and $1 reprints are the price $3.99 and the ad’s. They give us poor folk an opportunity to read,have,hold a otherwise expensive and rare gem. I personally like them. For this reason I like the idea of reprisals.

    As long as a repro is clearly sold as a repro, I have no problem with it. Personally I like vintage only, but I wouldn't deny anyone a chance to participate in collecting a similar item for far less money. We make TM distinctions for true Genuine Toyota parts, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and Champagne.
    Some people recreate authentic period masterwork paintings. This is fine if not trying to be sold as an original Picasso. Repros (of any kind) should just be treated the same and above board.
    Live and let live, but do it honestly.

    When Retroblasting brought this up, I pretty much said the same thing here: I have no problem purchasing repro parts to complete a vintage G.I. Joe figure/vehicle. Some parts that are hard to find or so small that they were easily lost go for insane amounts of money. I'm not trying to profit from my collection. When I'm gone, my family can do what they will with my collection. I do try to buy complete, like you said; sometimes if I'm at a garage sale or convention the figure isn't always complete. I make so much money and I have other things to take care of (family, bills, etc.). Its cheaper and helps finish the collection.
