Good comparisons here, very thought provoking (especially about modern Hollywood!) 👍

I think the critique towards the Hollywood born-heroes is right, but doesn't take the way of the distinction between born-heroes and bootstrap-heros. Skipping over how "bootstrap" feels etimologically worse than "born", regarding a hero; I would steer the focus from the source of heroism to the founding of it. I think we all can agree that heroism is about doing what's right, and a good story is about overcoming obstacles.
In this regards both born-heroes and bootstrap-heros can use their power to overcome those obstacles. An example of this is Frodo and Sam both being good heroes despise different type. What I think Hollywood's born hero are lacking is exactly this: the tale wich proves them heros, even before considering the source of their "heroness".
Being born powerful and learn to control that power or being born powerless and learn to be powerful both share something: the tale of overcoming difficulties.

I don't think Spiderman is a born hero.

He's an interesting case. Certainly he has humble beginnings and some markers of bootstrap heroes, but once he gets the super powers that throws a wrench into things. Now, his choices are limited and he is special no matter what. That puts him more inline with a born hero.

@@dicegeeks I'm not sure. I could very well be unaware of any recent rewrites of the lore - but just going off the classic canon - he got his powers accidentally, there was nothing destined about that. And he did go off the rails to begin with. It wasn't until the death of Uncle Ben that he had to face those consequences. So he was in control of who he chose to be going forwards. And then he made his own costume and web-shooters. Sounds pretty boot-strappy to me. 😀
      Interesting video BTW.
