Liz Fraser recorded this song a few days after her friend Jeff Buckley died. She wrote the lyrics as a stream of consciousness to express the loss she felt.
@@umdesch4 Eh, lots of the time it is actually english, it is just how she pronounces it, where she puts the emphasis, etc. If you listen to Frosty The Snowman and Winter Wonderland, or practically any song where you know the lyrics, you can see how she changes the emphasis and the pronunciation to make normal English words sound different. She doesn't make it up entirely like Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance... Even some things that sound made up, are later found to be interesting things, like reading a list of butterfly species in Latin, as lyrics, lol. At least for this one, there are discernable lyrics. Thanks for reacting to this song, means a lot to me!🙏🤗 This is sung by Elizabeth Fraser, former singer of Cocteau Twins, one of the best singers in the World in my opinion. She wrote this, being inspired by a french philosopher's work, his Name was Gaston Bachelard. As she recorded the Song in the studio, she found out that her ex boyfriend, singer Jeff Buckley (you probably remember him singing "hallelujah") died. She said, she had thought of him even before, read old letters from him and was thinking about him, writing and singing the lyrics and that it's really about him. I saw Massive Attack live in 2018 and Elizabeth Fraser singing this live and it was the only concert I ever cried at, that's how beautifully she sang. I recommend, you check out the Song "Song to the siren" by This Mortal Coil, which is also sung by her. This is one of my favorite songs (I have many). Massive Attack went through a few stages in the process of this song. At one point, they considered Madonna for the vocals on this but they ended up choosing Elizabeth Frazer, who felt a more personal connection to the lyrics as she recently lost Jeff Buckley, who was her former partner and still extremely close to. She felt to lyrics spoke very well about his passing and dedicated the song to him. Massive Attack would later work with Madonna on another track, a cover of a Marvin Gaye song, “I Want You”. Hi Jay 😁 The band's 3rd album went beyond trip hop to become a creative reference everywhere in April 1998 - Mezzanine is Massive Attack's greatest work, but it can't be considered a trip hop album - even when it comes to the group who created the trip hop. Robert 3D Del Naja even discussed with Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles during the design of the disc. 3D advocated a more grooved approach, looking for a kind of intensity that escaped the structure of a genre that was starting to get addicted. Therefore, there is a more elaborate work of mixing, vocal extensions and even long pauses, so that the drama was as organic as possible and the influences more comprehensive. It's trip hop because it has the Massive Attack signature. But it's also hip hop, jazz, reggae, post-punk, progressive… A major spat arose just as the band was about to decide what to do with "Teardrop." 3D, G and Davidge were delighted when Liz Fraser, lead singer of the Cocteau Twins, sent in her demo of the song - the result became the classic version we know today, with Liz operating like the emotional hand of an enigmatic clock, aiding Massive Attack to take her first song to the UK Top 10. Peace ✌️
This is such a beautiful, moving track. Another of theirs, Paradise Circus, is the most beautiful, seductive song I've ever heard. The way Paradise Circus crescendos at the end gives me goosebumps every time. Massive Attack are amazing.
This is a piece of music that you just allow to wrap you in a soft, gentleness and slowly rock you like a baby into a state of stillness and peace and love.
One thing about this music is that it is good background or just chillin quietly, music, because for me most of the time music is hard and faced paced which is what I love. But there is a whole underground subgenre of this type of music that is there but you have to dig a little to get to it and Massive attack is a good start;; it's great if you love to relax, smoke a little and chill to the beat - that's it
Every time I hear this tune I think of Ibiza 90's, early hours overlooking the sea as the sun is rising as you are gradually coming down from the night before, absolute classic. Without doubt my go to reaction channel, great job Jayvee.
It was written for her close friend/ lover, Jeff Buckley who died tragically. She admitted to being guilt stricken for not being there always for him. The lyrics are tremendously deep and the line ‘Nine night of matter’ is argued to refer to the Jamaican multi day wakes.
PORTISHEAD!!! Then Everything But The Girl. The lead singer also collaborated with Massive Attack. Try "Missing" as an entry point, but you really can't go wrong with any of their discography.

"The Spoils" is one of their greatest tracks! A Masterpiece. The angelical voice of Hope Sandoval, the heartbreaking lyrics, the beats, the strings... all this take it to another level. And the music video is very beatiful and enigmatic too. You should watch it!
Ahhh Elizabeth Fraser had the voice of an angel. If you want more check out the band she was in, The Cocteau Twins. They are pretty unconventional but made the most beautifully lush and moody music I’ve ever heard. Oooh and she is also on a track called The Song to the Siren by This Mortal Coil.
@jayveetv you have to imagine that this came out in a time when Music videos really mattered and no one ever knew that it was possible to create 3D-Forms in a way they did. The first time seeing this video was unbelievable. I had goosebumps and couldnt believe that this was even possible to see
Her voice is considered to be an instrument in its own right. “The voice of God” or “The voice of the risen God”. She is the voice behind Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and also Lament for Haldir (Lord Of The Rings) Fraser herself states that she also used foreign language words without knowing what they meant - the words acquiring meaning for [her] alone as [she] sang them. You should react as well to Song to the siren. a master piece,

Glory Box is the chefs kiss. I love DJ Shadow and funny enough even though I did know it was classed as Trip Hop at the time, one of two of what I would class as the best albums of the 90s is 9 Deadly Venoms by Depth Charge. You should check out History Repeating - feat tremendous vocals from Welsh legend Shirley Bassey from the same album, Decksanddrumsandrockandroll .
Massive Attack are the soundtrack to my life. I remember the first time I heard their first album in 1991... my mind was blown. I was 8 and I just burst out crying because it affected me so deeply. They're my balance, I listen to them all the time. Unfinished Sympathy is an experience in itself.

You found out about Massive Attack. British industrial music, along with Portishead, Tricky. Bjork all a bunch.
"Angel" by Massive Attack should be next. :D
Watching your reaction to this is great. It's very different than almost anything else you've reacted to.
Singer is Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins….listen to Carolyn’s Fingers for a start 👍
Yes😍
Nice, love Massive Attack. Morcheeba is another great triphop group. 👋😎
The singer is Elizabeth Fraser who sung for Cocteau Twins, a trippy 80's band you should try.
Also, give "Porcelain" by Moby a shot, mate.
Love this. Another nice, trippy one is "Hooverphonic - Inhaler".
Madonna has collaborated with them. The song was "I want you" by Marvin Gaye
Very beatutiful version of it
PORTISHEAD!!!
Then Everything But The Girl. The lead singer also collaborated with Massive Attack. Try "Missing" as an entry point, but you really can't go wrong with any of their discography.
ah my student days of 1998 getting stoned, with my housemates listening to music ..good times
yah, i'm betting it was running near the low end of requests, us weirdoes know good stuff. if some of the other commenters checked our suggestions out, they'd reach list top in moments.
Lol seriously I didn't think anyone else listened to or knew of Massive Attack besides me bc they were never on the radio or anything when I was growing up in the 90's. I found my people! 🙌
@@1paradox i wanna see him watch goldie.
@@felderup dood... old school jungle favorite!!
Classic case of the video detracting from the song. Should have played 'Massive Attack - Teardrop (MTV Studio, 1998)': th-cam.com/video/IKuFBxf3IA4/w-d-xo.html . Next one 'Daydreaming': th-cam.com/video/JG9CXQxhfL4/w-d-xo.html
This song was the opening theme to the TV show ‘House’ (2004-2012)
@jayveetv you have to imagine that this came out in a time when Music videos really mattered and no one ever knew that it was possible to create 3D-Forms in a way they did. The first time seeing this video was unbelievable. I had goosebumps and couldnt believe that this was even possible to see
Her voice is considered to be an instrument in its own right. “The voice of God” or “The voice of the risen God”. She is the voice behind Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and also Lament for Haldir (Lord Of The Rings)
Fraser herself states that she also used foreign language words without knowing what they meant - the words acquiring meaning for [her] alone as [she] sang them.
You should react as well to Song to the siren. a master piece,
I am very surprised you have not yet heard any music from "MARILLION".... You really need to check this band out with classic albums such as "Misplaced childhood"...."A script for a jesters tear"..."Best of both worlds"....The list goes on you will love the world class guitarist steve rothley!.
Have loved this song since I first heard it many years ago. Another "Massive" song from them is "Angel". The official video is a must.
This song is amazing, close your eyes and it transports you to another place.
Beautiful song! 🎵 ❤
Looking forwards to more Triphop on this channel :)
Thanks for reacting to this, Jay!!! Love this song. You should check out Portishead songs ‘Roads’ ‘The Rip’ and ‘Only You’. Another gorgeous Massive Attack track featuring Liz Fraser is ‘Black Milk’ 🙌🥰
Check out "Song to the Siren" by This Mortal Coil, which has the same singer (Elizabeth Fraser). Written by Tim Buckley, father of Jeff.
Yes! Totally agree.
Ohh, the vocalist is the lead singer of Cocteau Twins. I see ppl asking you to react to Carolyn's Fingers... I think I already ask for it a few weeks ago! lmao
Now you have another motive! :D
so delighted to watch you digging the sound. All time fave.
Do Angel, Inertia Creeps, Karmacoma and many more... That's the reason is trip-hop, is "trippy"...
Portishead's first 2 albums are masterpieces: Dummy & their self titled album.
I love this song , it’s stunning ⭐️
Massive Attack Lately Absolutely brilliant
This song has been on my sleep playlist since I first heard it in like idk 2015. That and their song angel. Both super chill songs that are great for pre sleep daydreaming. Helps me come up with my fav plots for books I may one day write.
I LOVE this song, a classic... thank you, I'm happy you enjoyed ! ;)
YEEEESSSSS! JAYVEE I have been begging ppl for Trip hop (the UK name for the scene) check.out Portishead "Roads" "glory box" "undenied"... So many. Also Morcheeba, they were good. But it's a must to review "Hell is round the corner" by Tricky. It's non optional mate😂
Can anyone explain to me why the sound of Jayvee's reaction songs is better than other audio versions of the same songs?
I recommend trying Tricky, I think he did really interesting things with this genre.
I was a big trance and cheesy techno fan in the 90s and only got in to Trip Hop later. Love Massive Attack's Angel. In the same vein from the 90s you also have Portishead. Glory Box is the chefs kiss. I love DJ Shadow and funny enough even though I did know it was classed as Trip Hop at the time, one of two of what I would class as the best albums of the 90s is 9 Deadly Venoms by Depth Charge. The other album is Decksanddrumsandrockandroll by the Propellerheads. You should check out History Repeating - feat tremendous vocals from Welsh legend Shirley Bassey from the same album, Decksanddrumsandrockandroll .
Don’t forget UNKLE
Massive Attack are the soundtrack to my life. I remember the first time I heard their first album in 1991... my mind was blown. I was 8 and I just burst out crying because it affected me so deeply. They're my balance, I listen to them all the time. Unfinished Sympathy is an experience in itself.
Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Feathers on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me, makes me lighter
Feathers on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Feathers on my breath
Night, night after day
Black flowers blossom

Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror

Of a confession
