  • Toyota Sequoia Second generation long-term review. My wife and I have all this vehicle since 2013. It’s an absolute workhorse. We have several things we love about this vehicle and a few complaints. This is toyota’s largest SUV and competes with the Ford excursion, Chevy suburban, GMC suburban, Yukon XL and Tahoe.

    I love hearing other people talk about their Sequoias. Its impossible not to love them. 197,000 miles on my 2008. I have a brand new 23 Tacoma, and a 23 4runner. The Sequoia is still my baby. Her name is "The Mothership".

    Toyota should have made an "extended length" version, too...like Suburban.

    08 Platinum with 332,000 miles and no real problems. The power folding mirrors have partially stripped gears from somebody pushing them in and the fuel filler door hinge broke at the bottom. That's it. I run 35x11.5r20 Ridge Grapplers on stock wheels with no rubbing or other modifications and get it's rated mpg. Synthetic fluids for the engine every 5k and trans/diffs every 50k.
    My girlfriend just asked if she can take it on a 2100 mile road trip to New Orleans with 6 roller derby girls and I said yeah, change the oil and check the tires - she's good to go. I don't have any concerns at all about car problems.
    Also, was bored during the Christmas blizzard so I cruised around with the dog and pulled 30 cars and a semi out of thick snow. Sequoias are beasts.

    If your transmission is not smooth, you are way passed due to change (not flush) your transmission fluid AND filter !!!
    These vehicles have a very smooth running transmission.
    I have the 2010 Platinum.

    My wifes 2010 Sequoia has just short of 300K on the clock. It has been flawless. The only issue has been the suspension finally gave up the ghost at 230K ($900 repair) and a dumb EPA system failure. It still is going strong. Loved it so much we just purchased a 2018 with 60K on the odometer. They are such great vehicles!

    have a 16 seqioua, i agree on the transmission. I think its just the 4.30 rear end, can make 1st gear a little jerky going from stop sign to stop sign. If you slow down enough for it to kick down to first, but dont come to a complete stop, it can be a little jerky because it very quickly shifts back into second as you get going with a tiny thud. If you coast it just right and keep it in second, then its no problem. And yes, i did a complete trans and diff change at the dealership at 60k miles, currently has 69k miles. Just think the 4.30 can be a little jerky when driving through areas with a lot of stop signs. Otherwise, its butter smooth and love the get up and go off the line so its definitely an acceptable trade off imo.

      How much did the fluids change cost you for future reference

    • @jameszettelmeyer291
      @jameszettelmeyer291 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Musica20009 I dont recall the exact amount but it was somewhere around $800 or so. That was trans, front, center and rear diff fluid change, nothing else. That was from a Toyota dealer. Probably can get it done cheaper elsewhere but this is about the only thing I will have a dealer do to my car, everything else I do so coughing it up once every 2-3 years is justifiable for me.

      Sounds almost like my 2008 RX350. When slowing to a stop, but not completely stopping, say 2-5mph and then I try to accelerate normally (I don’t abuse my cars), it hesitates or slips. But when I gently and slowly accelerate from 2-5mph, it’s fine.

    I knew a client with a 2008 Sequoia that had over 800* miles on it and it drove smooth as butter. Only big issue he had was eventually going in reverse started to fail.
    So i now have a 2011 sr5. 193k miles(bought it at 140k).. Only issue was the back hatch door stopped latching(last year in 2023). You hear about them stuck closed, well mine was the opposite. Had to take the door apart and replace the actuator that got all rusted and grimy.
    The power windows of driver and passenger side are starting to squeal so i have had to semi regularly spray silicone lubricant down the side weather stripping and they are better.
    I truely love this thing. I road trip in it. can fit a queen sized mattress in the back with all the seats down. Its been great so far.
    I want to know more about this transmission fluid drop and change.
    P.S. The horizontal rubber stripping at the base of my windows is now breaking off. all the up and down of the window. Im worried water is now getting in the door. How exactly can you replace this?

      I hear what you’re saying. That is a legendary engine. For me personally, interference engines with timing belts make no sense.
      That’s why toyota has moved towards chains on nearly all of their engines. Including the predecessor to the 4.8, the 57.

    Great review! I have a 2013 tundra and 2008 crv and really happy with both vehicles. We are a young family of 5 and possibly growing in the near future so researching this vehicle. Not sure if it is better for our family than a minivan. What do you think is the most reliable minivan? Thanks!

    • @checkitout2468
      @checkitout2468  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind comment. The most reliable minivan in my opinion is the Toyota sienna. Personally, I like the aesthetics of the Honda Odyssey way better. But if it’s reliability you’re looking for, without a doubt get the Sienna.

    You want the 2008-09 model with the 4.7L V8 because it has an engine block made out of iron called the 2UZFE, the most reliable work truck engine ever made. All you have to do is replace the rubber timing belt and water pump every 100,000 miles. The 2UZFE has been proven to go a million miles. Just type in million mile Tundra on TH-cam and you will see. What you have is a 5.7L V8 (3UR-FE) all of which has a aluminum block, which is less robust than iron, has more design flaws and tends to leak oil more. The only time you should buy the 5.7L V8 is if it has flexfuel, so you spend less money on fuel. E85 cost about $1 less per gallon than gasoline. Silver is the best color for this car.

    what kind of roof rack was that? Seems like you take it on and off--is that pretty simple or easier to just keep it on once its on?

    • @checkitout2468
      @checkitout2468  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I added a link in the description of this video to the roof rack. The roof rack takes 10 minutes to install and five minutes to takeoff. Obviously you’ll need a good spot to store it. Some of the reviews said it would rust if you left it on all the time. I spray painted mine when it was brand new with flat black paint to help prevent rust. It’s been awesome.
