Fairy tail's art style evolution is also impressive. It went from a One Piece like Style to its own .

Mashima’s art in early Rave was admittedly pretty mid. But everyone starts from somewhere lol. Fast forward 25 years and now Mashima’s art is so incredible and recognizable that he’s got video game companies wanting him to do their character designs. The fact that he initially didn’t have much, if any experience making a manga before Rave makes it all the more impressive and awe-inspiring🔥❤️

@@ShonenOujihere's the thing you wanna talk rough early artwork for a mangaka so rough that the anime adaption that it's unrecognizable in comparison to its anime adaption law of ueki its creator is pretty good at doing short series that have a decent ending

@@ShonenOujianother thing I'm sorry to talk to you about this but I think you might wanna look into the under served mangaka of weekly shounen Sunday most people know it for rumiko but there where tons of great mangaka that weren't given the same backing zatch bells creator did a hiroyuki takei, another creator whose been grinding in that magazine for well over 35 years is kazuhiro Fujita who created ushio to tora karakuri circus , and many other works, yet he seems to always have gotten passed over for other creators but I always find it interesting how a series can run for 42 volumes and have to wait 15 years for a adaption only for it to be a cut down and butchered

If you were an illustrator yourself, you would know that calling someone’s drawings trash is not very respectful, but I get the need for clickbait.
Also keep in mind that in 1999 the character design in some popular manga was not always the finest.
It would be naïve to compare it to the mangas now.
If you take Naruto and Bleach and open the first chapters, yes the designs were slightly bettter than rave at that point, but the faces were not way way more refined.
And yes it’s inspiring to see his evolution but he definitely had the potential from the beginning ;)

plus his criticisms were vague too "the face is flat and lack of details" where it looks well rendered . I gusse he's throwing some words for the sake of content

It wasn't anything special, but I love it. There's something so comforting about his older art that hits different. Same as the early bleach, one piece and MHA art, tho all of those started better than Rave.

You did a really good job at capturing and displaying some of the best panels, I look forward to watching your "The Manga That Inspired Fairy Tail" video soon!! Keep up the good work man!!!

Fun fact: Haro Aso (The creator of Alice in Borderland, Zom 100, and Hyde & Closer) was influenced by Rave Master; it would also be apparent in his early art style as well, before defining his own art style.

a common misconception is equating simple paneling with bad paneling. whilst getting creative with what a panel is, can be very eye catching and for some artist even be used as an integral part of story telling. what's more important is how the pictures inside the borders flow and tell a story. the advantage of keeping it simple/to form is that there is nothing to distract the reader from the story being told, it offers a quick and comfortable reading path , (ie, the difference between puting on an episode of friends vs watching an early German expressionism film) also if the artist ever does decide to break a panel or do something more avantgaurd then it actually sticks out to the viewer and makes the moment that much more impactful.

    • @HelloJellojrl
      @HelloJellojrl หลายเดือนก่อน

Also going off purely form the panels shown in this TH-cam video I'd say it's less that Hiro has started added more detail to his artwork and more that he has learnt where and how to use the detail. looking on that first page were M.c is fishing their is plenty of detail the fishing ball having a highlight a mid-tone and a shadow.
there's honestly shading everywhere and that's part of the problem. Pretty much the same screen tone is used for both the charter and the background causing everything to blend into one another and look messy,
But in the group shot of his later work of them eating ramen, you see that their is a significantly less use of screen tone, really only used to add depth to objects and to bring focus to the characters, (Such as shading the chair around Girl so she doesn't get lost in the background and white wall) there's practically none on the characters at all. comparing the Main M.c's hair, the early one is a mess of lines trying to add depth while the later trusts in the direction of the lins to add depth and leaves it void of shading but for a few for hair texture. He has also grown more confident in his use of strong blacks as shown in the characters clothes letting the strong contrast of filled black and whites to draw you to the character - note the white haired characters have black tops and the black hair character having a white top) this leads to a clearer and crisper image.
especially important as a lot of the times these manga aren't printed on the best of paper with the best of printer. The early Shonen jump designed to be taking out on recycling day. the poor printing quality making lines more likely to bleed and blend into each other.
In addition to the tree's it's less that the trees don't look like tree's, in fact it's the opposite, they are perfectly fine semi-realistic trees in the beginning. they remind me of how all beginner artist start off when first learning how to draw them, a good detailed trunk and than a black mess on top as they get absolute lost on how to render the complexity that is happening with the interlacing leaves and branches. It's not that his later tree's are more "Realistic" its that their better stylized. Much like how when you learn to draw hair the first piece of advice you get is "to not draw every individual strand but instead to treat it as chunks"
hiro stopped trying to draw realistic trees and started stylizing them into something that represents a tree. once again making his artwork more clear and crisp.
Same with the anime hair, it's not that the later hair was 'less anime' or 'more realistic' but more that hiro learned how to actually draw hair instead of what he thinks hair should look like. before he probably saw all his favorite mangaka drawing hair like that and copied it with out fully understanding the basic structure but as time went on someone either taught him or he figured out the tricks of making heavily stylized hair look good. Things like. all hair should flow from one specific spot and find a specific shape and than add details.

His words are very harsh, yes. (I thought even though mashima-sensei's art may have been amateurish in the beginning but i could see some charm to it) Don't let the critcisms bog you down. Many people will always have strong opinions, and critisms. and pleasing everyone will be impossible. But if it helps, sometimes you just gotta cover your ears and start doing what you want to. You'll only get better from here on.

For the trees and backgrounds I would say he was trying to make it to detailed as a manga artist myself a lot of times some of us try to make it more realistic but then make it look very unnatural which what he had to do was simplify the designs so it looks like it has more detail and not look overwhelming like the wrinkly trees in the first part
