In Korean and Chinese culture, butterflies symbolize the soul, so the butterflies around Jiu that burn away show that she and the other girls have lost their souls because of what Yoohyeon did to the little spider. That malicious act angered the nature spirit who is the guardian of spiders and she cursed the girls. The curse removed their souls and doomed them to forever walk the Earth tasked with bringing nightmares into the dreams of mortals. They are trapped between life and death which means they've been excluded from the Buddhist cycle of birth, death and reincarnation. They can't be reborn into a new life as would normally happen after death. They're ghosts. There are seven songs in the Nightmare story arc: Chase Me, Good Night, Fly High (prequel), You and I, What, Piri, and Breaking Out.
"Fly High" is probably the poppiest of the Nightmare arc. It was not done by their usual production team as well. But it makes sense, since this is a prequel, so bringing in a bit of the Minx sound makes sense to me. There are really heavy parts in it as well, which clearly state that they are not Minx anymore. And I love the dark parts thrown in, they really make the song special. The light part sung by SuA after the metal break is in major, while the rest of the song is in minor. That is why it stands out so much. They did the same in Good Night, but a lot shorter. About the MV: You can see Yoohyeon burning the spider, which brought the curse of the spider queen down on the members. You will see the spider queen again in You and I. In Native American mythology, spiders are considered protectors, that is why a Dreamcatcher resembles a spider's net. That is a brilliant connection to their name! 😊 The high notes are usually done by Siyeon, the main vocal. Boca means "mouth" in Spanish and Portuguese and is part 2 of the Dystopia trilogy, which deals with bullying and hate comments, in particular the online variant ("A trick behind a mask, a ridiculous freak" from Scream). Boca has the lines "Why do you fill your precious time with hate" and "Too many angels dying now", which points to the effects those comments can have. Several Kpop idols have committed suicide in recent years, most likely because of cyber-bullying, but this is also about all the unnamed people who suffer from online bullies. A girlgroup tackling such a subject impresses the hell out of me. They literally go to war in this video and tell haters to go and shut their "Boca" in the lyrics. And the song is absolutely awesome! Who said you can't have three different musical genres in one song? "Bon Voyage" is the 3rd and final part of the Apocalypse trilogy, which is about the destruction of the environment by humanity. The members have mentioned that it is about giving nature a break. Any encounter between human beings always has separation attached to it as well, just as death is a part of life. SuA also said that the fluffy floating thing that Dami summons from her painting is a cell, representing nature. It has been named "Celly" and is adorable, right? My dark mind believes that they are saying "Have a good trip" to humanity, since we are well on our way of wiping ourselves out. It's like a breakup between humanity and the earth. Once humanity is gone, nature gets the break it needs and the circle will begin again. For me, the key to understanding the lyrics is that they are singing as human beings, not as a single person. And they are singing to nature, confessing their love and the realization that we are not good for nature and that it probably resents us. It could also be the other way round (them singing as mother nature to humanity). SuA jumping out after the dove seem to represent their desire for peace. Yay, more DC reactions! Fly High was one of the first songs/mvs I found after I discovered them and it always gave me anime opening song. The songs in their Nightmare series are heavily j-rock inspired, especially towards the beginning so that makes sense. Fly High, being the prequel to Chase Me & Good Night, uses the brighter instrumental with stabs of darkness to great affect. It acts as a bridge between who they were as Minx (bright, bubblegum pop) and who they are as Dreamcatcher (dark, dramatic, & rock). Boca is part two of their Dystopia trilogy, which includes Scream & Odd Eye, and is very much a song about telling the haters to shut their Boca. The whole Dystopia trilogy is social commentary on hate speech, online bullying, and social media. Bonvoyage is the third part of their Apocalypse trilogy, which includes Maison (home in french) & Vision, and in the context of the story is a love letter to Earth as humanity has to leave so it can heal. The trilogy is about how we've harmed the earth through greed and war. Maison, specifically, was very on the nose with it's messaging and is a plea for people to pay attention to what's happening to our planet and for someone to stand up and fight for us. If you want another three to tackle you could do OOTD, Justice, and Shatter. OOTD & Justice are the two title tracks in the Versus duology. The lore surrounding those two MVs is pretty expansive but the gist is that they portray two alternate reality versions of Dreamcatcher. Shatter is a b-side on the same album as OOTD, Villains, and has a performance video on their YT channel.
