Condensed the riots down and fudged the timeline of the whole thing quite a bit to better fit the timeline and pacing of the movie, but tonally and especially visually the movie does a great job reflecting New York at the time. And Daniel Day-Lewis' accent as Bill the Butcher is still held up as one of the best period accurate accents in film. But what I find probably the most interesting is that another Scorsese movie Age of Innocence also starring Daniel Day-Lewis is also set in New York at around the same time following "high society" like what the publisher and the one prominent rich family represent in this movie. All still in New York City but farther north and not especially close to the Five Points where most of Gangs is set.
Last of the Mohicans, directed by Michael Mann (Heat). The last scene still gives me goosebumps thinking about it 30 years later. The drama, scenery, rousing score. It's film perfection.

Daniel Day-Lewis is truly a masterpiece, only actor who received three Oscars for best actor so far. In this film he was chewing the scenery like beaver and I love his overacting in "Gangs". But he is able of more subtile portrayals. And he can be even more intense! But boy oh boy, what a ride lately! From "Dirty Dancing" to "Lawrence of Arabia" to "True Romance" to "Rocky" to "Gangs".

"The Last of the Mohicans" and "There Will Be Blood". Lewis plays two entirely different characters in these movies. Other greats: "Lincoln" and "The Crucible".

I see there's a lot of praise for DDL in the comments but for me the best performance in the whole film is Brendan Gleeson. He's tremendous, as he always is. Speaking of which, you should react to "In Bruges". I think you'll really enjoy it.
This movie is based on a book by Herbert Asbury with the same title published in 1927. Although, the events were fictional except the Draft Riots some of the characters, and names of the gangs are listed in the book. It was a good book. Just a little tough to read due to language and slang of the times.
Yeah Madcat Maggie, Bill the Butcher(real name William Poole who liked to gouge out eyes apparently), the Dead Rabbits, Bowery Boys and Plug Uglies were apparently real people. Also Bills last words are supposedly accurate to William Poole as well. Seems 19th Century NY was just as wild as any tale conjured up in the Wild West.
Many people say that this isn't Scorsese's finest film, and that may be true technically, but it is by far my favorite. The intensity of the characters, the performances, and the time period; all that combined definitely adds up to more than just the sum of its parts for me.
I can't agree with that more. I honestly believe that the themes dealt with in this motion picture transcend cinema and have attained a type of spiritual quality on their own. The draft riots is one of the most obscure and poorly understood periods in American history. There are lessons from them and from this film which beg to be taken seriously and considered diligently. This is exactly the sort of scenario from which we derive the quote; "Those who do not remember the past are destined to repeat it."
This is my favorite Daniel Day Lewis performance. When the movie came out, I read that Dickens, who wrote so much about the terrible conditions in the slums of London, went on his 1842 American tour to see the Five Points neighborhood, and stated that these were the worst slums he had ever seen. I know that the fire department stuff is at least essentially accurate, and of course the New York draft riots and the political reign of Boss Tweed. I think this is one of Scorsese's greatest movies.
It was said that Daniel Day-Lewis got into his character, "Bill The Butcher" at the beginning of shooting and stayed there during the entire filming of the movie and was starting to scare people on the sets.
I honestly believe Daniel Day Lewis is in the top 5 of best actors of all time, maybe top 3. The guy can do everything and just disappears in his roles. A shame he has done so few parts in the end.
He's of that kind of chameleon actors that have such range you don't recognize them from one movie to another (Gary Oldman also comes to mind). He totally carries this one. I don't know if it's because it's a Scorcese movie, but his facial expressions and acting kind of remind me of de Niro in this one.
Yes. His acting is great in There Will Be Blood. But overall, that movie is boring. His great acting wasn't enough to save that movie. And yes, he deserved to win Best Actor at the Oscars.
The common misconception about "ye olde tymes" is the life expectancy. "he should be dead 10 years ago" ... actually, people got just as old as they do today, but infant mortality was MUCH higher back then too, lowering the average life expectancy by A LOT.
Scrolled through the comments a long time to find this. Was sure someone would point it out or I was going to. Death grades on a curve. Once you lived past like 7 you were much more likely to reach a “normal” age of 70-90. Women were baby factories because the likelihood that you were losing the child to some illness was huge.

good for reactions to not have seen much. big part of my enjoyment of watching reactions is getting to vicariously relive the first time experience through someone else. and actually, although having seen arguably unhealthy amount of movies (in thousands) I don't think I've seen E.T. either. never really enjoyed movies with kids as protagonists.
Watching DDL's performance in this movie was the first time I ever appreciated acting as an artform. Up until that point, I was only a fan of the actors themselves (Robin Williams, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, etc.), and their sheer charisma. But DDLs portrayal of Bill the Butcher was the first time I noticed how an actor can really transform themselves into a role beyond recognition. And IMO, he's the absolute best at doing that

Fantastic reaction, as always. You do some of the best editing on TH-cam! Historical stuff: Bill the Butcher was a real person, although this is a fictionalization of him (the real-life gang leader was Bill Poole, not Bill Cutting). Tammany was also a real politician and was infamous for his underhanded tactics. The riot at the end was real, as well, and nearly burned NYC to the ground. It’s kind of crazy that it’s been all but forgotten. Gangs of New York is based on a book of the same name that is considered nonfiction, though how much is accurate is up for debate. It is largely pulling information from the newspapers of the time, which were filled with lurid gossip, exaggeration, and outright lies. It’s a neat book, and captured Scorsese’s attention in the 1970s. He always dreamed of making it into a movie and, although the final product is messy, he remains very proud of this film. I’ve never thought it was up to the caliber of Goodfellas or Raging Bull, but DDLs performance is second-to-none and it really spotlights a unique period in American history.
The backdrop was the Draft Riots (Which happened) in New York, especially in the poor places during the Civil War. Rich people could buy deferments for their kids (IE, "pay someone else") to go off and be drafted to fight against the Rebels in what (at the time many) thought was a losing proposition. The Riots broke out because of this and that's why the Military got involved at the end of the film. But yeah, New York was *horridly* corrupt during this time.
@Ruaidhrí Ryan New York City was in an interesting position. It was a hub for the cotton trade, so had particular economic ties to the South. That led to divided opinions on the Civil War that you wouldn't find in Brooklyn, for example. Other Union cities had draft riots, but not on the scale of NYC.
We don't know exactly what a "native" New York accent sounded like back then, but Danial Day Lewis did a lot of research and put together an accent that's likely close, garnering praise from an accent coach I subscribe to. You should see him portray Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln. And There Will Be Blood is another good period drama where he played a ruthless character, a wildcatter this time.
I was at a recording session for some pick up ADR lines with Cameron Diaz before this was released. We had Martin Scorcese and the film editor on an ISDN connection directing from NYC and Canada while she recorded in LA. She also had her dialect coach listening in or in studio, I can't remember now, to make sure her accent stayed accurate. About a two hour setup for a half hour recording session.
I didn't scroll thru all the comments, so I hope that this hasn't been said before. ----- The story goes that Daniel Day-Lewis read the script for Pulp Fiction and wanted the part of Vincent Vega, and the producers wanted him to do it. Travolta's career was languishing at the time. But Tarantino had always had Travolta in mind and won the battle. I'm curious about how a technician like Day-Lewis and a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants director like Tarantino would have clicked.
I always find it amazing that at the end of the movie the 2 main characters were buried in Brooklyn. I know people say or message me "Brooklyn is part of NYC" but back in the day they are portraying, Brooklyn was it's own city and wasn't part of NYC until the very end of the 19th century, 1898 or 1899.
6:30 - I just realised this scene is funny on a meta level, because Daniel Day-Lewis would later play Abraham Lincoln in a movie directed by Steven Spielberg.
I was lucky enough to have met Martin Scorcese during a Q&A at Ohio State while I was a student there, and my question wasn't about his then-newly made film Cape Fear, but rather "Please settle the debate about the pronunciation of your last name." I got a laugh and he said, "Okay, it's SCOR-SESS-SEE. Not SCOR-ZAYZEE, and please not SCOR-SEEZE. SCOR-SESS-SEE. Spread the word." Big laugh.
Some of my favorite movies is due to scenes held by just conversation, for this movie it's the scene when bill and Amsterdam when he's talking about his dad. Ranks right up there with Troy and the hidden convo between Achilles and King Prium.
Scorsese wanted to make this film for decades it was his favorite book as a kid. Based on real events that happen, there was also draft riots in Detroit and Baltimore as well as in the mines of Pennsylvania
Not one of Scorcese best, but every scene with Daniel Day Lewis is an absolute highlight and scene stealer. He is just se mesmerizing. Another standout is Brendan Gleeson.
I feel it has a lot in common with the end of West Side Story: the gangs let themselves think their little bit of turf was the whole world and then found out they were wrong.
Everyone is lavishing (very deserved) praise on Daniel Day-Lewis, but I do want to say that this is the movie that finally made me respect Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, after rolling my eyes at him for years after Titanic
The reason for all these different "Gangs" was because the people couldn't afford a local police force, and most of the two where often bought off by rival gangs...

William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting was based on a man named William Poole, born in Jersey & buried in New York. You can look up his grave stone. Boss Tweed was a real Democratic Politicia, who ruled over Tammany Hall. Even Amsterdam Vallon is based on an Irishman named John Morrissey. I absolutely LOVE movies based in actual history. IMHO, Lewis' career performances peaked with "My Left Foot," but it wasn't a Hollywood hit so it would never win in a poll. Barring 'Gangs' and 'Left Foot,' my money is on 'There Will Be Blood,' and maybe 'Lincoln' as an honorable mention.
Good to have a Scorsese poll... the man is a master. Each film is a homerun, at worst a double and never a strikeout. On your poll, is After Hours directed by Scorsese? Also, have you already seen Raging Bull? I also noticed Age of Innocence was missing. I consider that one almost a companion piece to Gangs. Amazing performance by Daniel Day-Lewis, his brilliance as an actor was on full display. Shame he retired, but I guess the stories you read about how extreme he took method acting must take a toll. Great movie, great reaction.
This movie is surprisingly accurate, if you listen to historian types. Daniel Day Lewis apparently recreated _a dead accent_ to play Bill as authentically as possibly.
My wife and I were collecting the top 200 books of all time. The tiniest one was one about this period. Scorcesi kept this book in his pocket while filming this movie.
I normally can't stand intro music on youtube, and skip both the intro, and then all of the opening dialogue on reaction videos as a result. Your intro is actually pleasant and calming and sets the tone properly for your personalities. I'm not wording well here, but I like your intro music and dialogue. You two are doing great.

I have to admit this shocked me. KoC is an Amazing film! I have to guess this movie Choice here (GoNY) was not really much about Scorsese as a director. DDL performance was the best thing about this film, imo. And that's just because he was bonkers. Give me Robert bonkers over Daniel bonkers any day ;) .

Daniel Day-Lewis is a master-class actor. So phenomenal. He retired a few years back. Sad day for acting. My other two favorite Daniel Day-Lewis movies are The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Lincoln (2012). The Last of the Mohicans takes place during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). But it's his performance as Abraham Lincoln that is my favorite. He IS Lincoln. As a Civil War history fan, here are some more Civil War films/miniseries you may like: The Blue and the Gray (1982). A 3-part miniseries starring Gregory Peck as Abraham Lincoln. North and South. 3 miniseries in 1985, 1986, and 1994. Based on the novel trilogy by John Jakes, it stars a very young, pre-Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze. Gettysburg (1993). Starring Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, and Sam Elliott. Ride with the Devil (1999). Starring Tobey Maguire. Gods and Generals (2003). A prequel to 1993's Gettysburg starring Jeff Daniels and Robert Duvall.
It's too bad Daniel Day-Lewis retired. He's just too good, to just let that talent go by the wayside. Even at his age now or in the future there always be roles for him to play. Well I wish him the best, live a good healthy life. Thank you DDL for the work you have done in this craft called acting.
TBR Schmitt and Samantha, I think Daniel Day-Lewis is, quite simply, the greatest actor of the last 50 years. He's a chameleon with more range and hues than any contemporary actor that I can think of. I don't think it's even very close. You guys definitely owe yourselves the chance to sample the rest of the proof: "A Room with a View" (a great movie in which he has only a small role), "My Left Foot", "The Last of the Mohicans", "The Age of Innocence" (which is set in historic New York only about 10 years after "Gangs" and will show you how great his range is when compared), "In the Name of the Father", "There Will Be Blood", "Lincoln", and "Phantom Thread". As far as I'm concerned, the man has set the bar for how great an actor can be.
The Five Points Riots are one of those fun things from US History that we never talk about. It remains one (and the first) of only 3 times a sitting US president had to issue a shot to kill order for our military on US soil in order to restore order. The navy even had to bombard the city as you saw in the show. If fact, it all pretty much went down, exactly as you saw in the movie. Historians still don't have a precise number on how many people died. . . . .
Far from exactly as you see in the movie. For example, while the precise number of dead in the New York draft riots (which were not confined to the Five Points) is unknown, historians are generally in agreement that the number is about 120, not the thousands portrayed in the movie and the book on which it was based.
Most think that it was the Wild West that was so violent in these times, but in actuality the big cities back east were much worse. Many more gun fights and murders in the cities than out west, except maybe San Francisco, which was a wide open port town, like NYC.

Daniel Day Lewis' performance in "There Will Be Blood" is exceptional and I personally love that movie. Super slow burn but really amazing storytelling and cinematography.

THE MAIN CHARACTERS WERE REAL the base story line was loosely REAL and YES, The United States NAVY and ARMY **DID** Fire on the citizens of the City to smash the gang wars. Many years ago this Movie was Played on the HISTORY CHANNEL along with discussion of the events.
Last Of The Mohicans as mentioned is a magic film. Music in that movie will make you cry. Also HEAT as mentioned by others many times is just a great movie. The final scene with Val Kilmer was worthy of an oscar with his wife. The car scene is all im saying. Breaks me every time
I often equate the climax of "gangs..." with the sword fight in "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (a movie revered by Scorsese), which spends time on the meticulous preparation and etiquette of a duel, only for the camera to drift away and up and out as the actual sword fight commences. This is a strategy deployed throughout that movie as a whole in fact (indeed it is it's entire architecture), to create a degree of ambiguity about its central character, and service the film's real intent at illustrating inter-genrational incomprehension. "Gangs" isn't really doing the same thing, but its rendering of the climax of the conflict between Vallon and The Butcher is similarly counterintuitive, swallowed up as it is by the tide of history (specifically the Draft Day Riots ). Theirs is a forgotten conflict in effect, rendered deliberately insignificant and anticlimactic. It's a bold choice, since it can have an alienating effect on the viewer, who might feel cheated, but it's crucial in illustrating the manner in which the blood and violence of history is swallowed up by time. An idea repeated by the film's final image of the city transitioning from 1863 to 2002. The past buried beneath "the steel and glass canyons" of the present.
You never saw There Will Be Blood or The Unbearable Lightness of Being or My Left Foot or Last of The Mohicans or Lincoln or The Crucible ? Not necessarily in that order but Daniel Day Lewis is legendary! Three Best Actor Oscars well deserved.
There will be blood is one of the few films I will watch everytime it’s on no matter where it is in the movie. Came out the same year as no country for old men and was sandwiched between 2 years with no good movies so it really stands out.
This is, by far, my favorite Daniel Day Lewis film and performance. There Will Be Blood is a must for you guys to watch as well. A little slower but still a great performance by Lewis

"Ear for beer" @11:20 "Aw man" 39:33 Gangs' was scheduled for a Nov/Dec. 2001 release date but, World Ttade Center was attacked that year. The movie was released following year and if I remember correctly, Harvey Weinstein suggested Scorsese to delete The Black Orphanage arson scene. (Emotions are still raw over the World Trade and movie takes place in New York. There was even a debate weather or not the twin towers be included in the final shot). Boss Tweed made comments about dead votes at the end. He died in prison. Draft riots also occurred in Boston & Detroit. @32:59 written scene Bill stabs him in the eye with a pair of barber scissors. There were some violent written scenes that did make the final cut. There was one involving a girl killed over a 1 cent penny.
This movie was based on Luc Sante's "Low Life". An excellent, researched book. All of the details were based on documented fact. Marty merged the main characters from multiple sources. DDL films are all excellent. I'd start from "Last of the Mohicans"

I'm glad Samantha is getting a list together. Daniel Day-Lewis is a legend who gives a powerhouse performance in pretty much everything he's done. Other favorites that didn't make my top 3 are also worth a watch: In The Name Of The Father, & Lincoln. A shame he's retired.
Daniel Day Lewis is the best. I would highly recommend him as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. Slam dunk oscar win for best actor in that role.
First of all Great Reaction, this is one of my top ten movies and I don't see enough reactions for it. My favorite Irony in this film is Daniel Day Lewis throwing a knife at Abe Lincoln's picture and then 10 years later Daniel ends up playing Lincoln in 2012 and winning Best Actor of the Year for that great role. I highly recommend Lincoln.
Daniel day Lewis as a Method actor stayed in Character on and off the set for months . There are behind the scene accounts of Bill the Butcher stealing props from the set. 😆 Lewis stayed in Character so much. Cast mates feared for his sanity. Even Daniel has stated in interviews. It took him a few months after shooting. To come back to his true self.

Daniel Day-Lewis is truly a masterpiece, only actor who received three Oscars for best actor so far. In this film he was chewing the scenery like beaver and I love his overacting in "Gangs". But he is able of more subtile portrayals. And he can be even more intense! But boy oh boy, what a ride lately! From "Dirty Dancing" to "Lawrence of Arabia" to "True Romance" to "Rocky" to "Gangs".

"The Last of the Mohicans" and "There Will Be Blood". Lewis plays two entirely different characters in these movies. Other greats: "Lincoln" and "The Crucible".

I see there's a lot of praise for DDL in the comments but for me the best performance in the whole film is Brendan Gleeson. He's tremendous, as he always is.

This movie is based on a book by Herbert Asbury with the same title published in 1927. Although, the events were fictional except the Draft Riots some of the characters, and names of the gangs are listed in the book. It was a good book. Just a little tough to read due to language and slang of the times.
Yeah Madcat Maggie, Bill the Butcher(real name William Poole who liked to gouge out eyes apparently), the Dead Rabbits, Bowery Boys and Plug Uglies were apparently real people. Also Bills last words are supposedly accurate to William Poole as well. Seems 19th Century NY was just as wild as any tale conjured up in the Wild West.
Many people say that this isn't Scorsese's finest film, and that may be true technically, but it is by far my favorite. The intensity of the characters, the performances, and the time period; all that combined definitely adds up to more than just the sum of its parts for me.
I can't agree with that more. I honestly believe that the themes dealt with in this motion picture transcend cinema and have attained a type of spiritual quality on their own. The draft riots is one of the most obscure and poorly understood periods in American history. There are lessons from them and from this film which beg to be taken seriously and considered diligently. This is exactly the sort of scenario from which we derive the quote; "Those who do not remember the past are destined to repeat it."
This is my favorite Daniel Day Lewis performance. When the movie came out, I read that Dickens, who wrote so much about the terrible conditions in the slums of London, went on his 1842 American tour to see the Five Points neighborhood, and stated that these were the worst slums he had ever seen. I know that the fire department stuff is at least essentially accurate, and of course the New York draft riots and the political reign of Boss Tweed. I think this is one of Scorsese's greatest movies.

One of Daniel Day Lewis` great performances is as Gerry Conlon in a film from 1993 called "In The Name Of The Father"...definitely worth a look at!
It was said that Daniel Day-Lewis got into his character, "Bill The Butcher" at the beginning of shooting and stayed there during the entire filming of the movie and was starting to scare people on the sets.
He also had to shave his head afterward because the state of his hair was beyondhorrible.
I honestly believe Daniel Day Lewis is in the top 5 of best actors of all time, maybe top 3. The guy can do everything and just disappears in his roles. A shame he has done so few parts in the end.

He's of that kind of chameleon actors that have such range you don't recognize them from one movie to another (Gary Oldman also comes to mind). He totally carries this one. I don't know if it's because it's a Scorcese movie, but his facial expressions and acting kind of remind me of de Niro in this one.

The common misconception about "ye olde tymes" is the life expectancy. "he should be dead 10 years ago" ... actually, people got just as old as they do today, but infant mortality was MUCH higher back then too, lowering the average life expectancy by A LOT.

and actually, although having seen arguably unhealthy amount of movies (in thousands) I don't think I've seen E.T. either. never really enjoyed movies with kids as protagonists.
Watching DDL's performance in this movie was the first time I ever appreciated acting as an artform. Up until that point, I was only a fan of the actors themselves (Robin Williams, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, etc.), and their sheer charisma. But DDLs portrayal of Bill the Butcher was the first time I noticed how an actor can really transform themselves into a role beyond recognition. And IMO, he's the absolute best at doing that

Historical stuff: Bill the Butcher was a real person, although this is a fictionalization of him (the real-life gang leader was Bill Poole, not Bill Cutting). Tammany was also a real politician and was infamous for his underhanded tactics. The riot at the end was real, as well, and nearly burned NYC to the ground. It’s kind of crazy that it’s been all but forgotten.
Gangs of New York is based on a book of the same name that is considered nonfiction, though how much is accurate is up for debate. It is largely pulling information from the newspapers of the time, which were filled with lurid gossip, exaggeration, and outright lies. It’s a neat book, and captured Scorsese’s attention in the 1970s. He always dreamed of making it into a movie and, although the final product is messy, he remains very proud of this film. I’ve never thought it was up to the caliber of Goodfellas or Raging Bull, but DDLs performance is second-to-none and it really spotlights a unique period in American history.
The backdrop was the Draft Riots (Which happened) in New York, especially in the poor places during the Civil War. Rich people could buy deferments for their kids (IE, "pay someone else") to go off and be drafted to fight against the Rebels in what (at the time many) thought was a losing proposition. The Riots broke out because of this and that's why the Military got involved at the end of the film. But yeah, New York was *horridly* corrupt during this time.

That led to divided opinions on the Civil War that you wouldn't find in Brooklyn, for example. Other Union cities had draft riots, but not on the scale of NYC.

We don't know exactly what a "native" New York accent sounded like back then, but Danial Day Lewis did a lot of research and put together an accent that's likely close, garnering praise from an accent coach I subscribe to.
You should see him portray Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln. And There Will Be Blood is another good period drama where he played a ruthless character, a wildcatter this time.
Bill is the epitome of the cult of personality. Yes, he's a terrible person. But he has a charisma that's alluring to weak people.

I was at a recording session for some pick up ADR lines with Cameron Diaz before this was released. We had Martin Scorcese and the film editor on an ISDN connection directing from NYC and Canada while she recorded in LA. She also had her dialect coach listening in or in studio, I can't remember now, to make sure her accent stayed accurate. About a two hour setup for a half hour recording session.

I didn't scroll thru all the comments, so I hope that this hasn't been said before. ----- The story goes that Daniel Day-Lewis read the script for Pulp Fiction and wanted the part of Vincent Vega, and the producers wanted him to do it. Travolta's career was languishing at the time. But Tarantino had always had Travolta in mind and won the battle. I'm curious about how a technician like Day-Lewis and a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants director like Tarantino would have clicked.
I always find it amazing that at the end of the movie the 2 main characters were buried in Brooklyn. I know people say or message me "Brooklyn is part of NYC" but back in the day they are portraying, Brooklyn was it's own city and wasn't part of NYC until the very end of the 19th century, 1898 or 1899.
6:30 - I just realised this scene is funny on a meta level, because Daniel Day-Lewis would later play Abraham Lincoln in a movie directed by Steven Spielberg.
I was lucky enough to have met Martin Scorcese during a Q&A at Ohio State while I was a student there, and my question wasn't about his then-newly made film Cape Fear, but rather "Please settle the debate about the pronunciation of your last name." I got a laugh and he said, "Okay, it's SCOR-SESS-SEE. Not SCOR-ZAYZEE, and please not SCOR-SEEZE. SCOR-SESS-SEE. Spread the word." Big laugh.
Some of my favorite movies is due to scenes held by just conversation, for this movie it's the scene when bill and Amsterdam when he's talking about his dad. Ranks right up there with Troy and the hidden convo between Achilles and King Prium.

Scorsese wanted to make this film for decades it was his favorite book as a kid. Based on real events that happen, there was also draft riots in Detroit and Baltimore as well as in the mines of Pennsylvania

Having the film end with the New York Draft Riots was a brilliant decision.
I feel it has a lot in common with the end of West Side Story: the gangs let themselves think their little bit of turf was the whole world and then found out they were wrong.

Boss Tweed was a real Democratic Politicia, who ruled over Tammany Hall. Even Amsterdam Vallon is based on an Irishman named John Morrissey. I absolutely LOVE movies based in actual history. IMHO, Lewis' career performances peaked with "My Left Foot," but it wasn't a Hollywood hit so it would never win in a poll. Barring 'Gangs' and 'Left Foot,' my money is on 'There Will Be Blood,' and maybe 'Lincoln' as an honorable mention.

This movie is surprisingly accurate, if you listen to historian types. Daniel Day Lewis apparently recreated _a dead accent_ to play Bill as authentically as possibly.
Daniel Day Lewis was my favorite actor of all time until he retired. I was so bummed to hear that at the time. The man is in a class by himself.
My wife and I were collecting the top 200 books of all time. The tiniest one was one about this period. Scorcesi kept this book in his pocket while filming this movie.
The most realistic part of this story is the rich guy talking about pitting the poor against each other for the benefit of the rich.
Surprisingly, a lot of this movie is historically correct.
I normally can't stand intro music on youtube, and skip both the intro, and then all of the opening dialogue on reaction videos as a result. Daniel Day-Lewis is a master-class actor. So phenomenal. He retired a few years back. Sad day for acting. My other two favorite Daniel Day-Lewis movies are The Last of the Mohicans (1992) and Lincoln (2012). The Last of the Mohicans takes place during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). But it's his performance as Abraham Lincoln that is my favorite. He IS Lincoln.
As a Civil War history fan, here are some more Civil War films/miniseries you may like:
The Blue and the Gray (1982). A 3-part miniseries starring Gregory Peck as Abraham Lincoln.
North and South. 3 miniseries in 1985, 1986, and 1994. Based on the novel trilogy by John Jakes, it stars a very young, pre-Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze.
Gettysburg (1993). Starring Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, and Sam Elliott.
Ride with the Devil (1999). Starring Tobey Maguire.
Gods and Generals (2003). A prequel to 1993's Gettysburg starring Jeff Daniels and Robert Duvall.
It's too bad Daniel Day-Lewis retired. He's just too good, to just let that talent go by the wayside. Even at his age now or in the future there always be roles for him to play. Well I wish him the best, live a good healthy life. Thank you DDL for the work you have done in this craft called acting.

TBR Schmitt and Samantha, I think Daniel Day-Lewis is, quite simply, the greatest actor of the last 50 years. He's a chameleon with more range and hues than any contemporary actor that I can think of. I don't think it's even very close. You guys definitely owe yourselves the chance to sample the rest of the proof: "A Room with a View" (a great movie in which he has only a small role), "My Left Foot", "The Last of the Mohicans", "The Age of Innocence" (which is set in historic New York only about 10 years after "Gangs" and will show you how great his range is when compared), "In the Name of the Father", "There Will Be Blood", "Lincoln", and "Phantom Thread". As far as I'm concerned, the man has set the bar for how great an actor can be.
The Five Points Riots are one of those fun things from US History that we never talk about. It remains one (and the first) of only 3 times a sitting US president had to issue a shot to kill order for our military on US soil in order to restore order. The navy even had to bombard the city as you saw in the show. If fact, it all pretty much went down, exactly as you saw in the movie. Historians still don't have a precise number on how many people died. . . . .

Far from exactly as you see in the movie. For example, while the precise number of dead in the New York draft riots (which were not confined to the Five Points) is unknown, historians are generally in agreement that the number is about 120, not the thousands portrayed in the movie and the book on which it was based.
Most think that it was the Wild West that was so violent in these times, but in actuality the big cities back east were much worse. Many more gun fights and murders in the cities than out west, except maybe San Francisco, which was a wide open port town, like NYC.

THE MAIN CHARACTERS WERE REAL the base story line was loosely REAL and YES, The United States NAVY and ARMY **DID** Fire on the citizens of the City to smash the gang wars. Many years ago this Movie was Played on the HISTORY CHANNEL along with discussion of the events.

Last Of The Mohicans as mentioned is a magic film. Music in that movie will make you cry. Also HEAT as mentioned by others many times is just a great movie.

I often equate the climax of "gangs..." with the sword fight in "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" (a movie revered by Scorsese), which spends time on the meticulous preparation and etiquette of a duel, only for the camera to drift away and up and out as the actual sword fight commences. This is a strategy deployed throughout that movie as a whole in fact (indeed it is it's entire architecture), to create a degree of ambiguity about its central character, and service the film's real intent at illustrating inter-genrational incomprehension.
"Gangs" isn't really doing the same thing, but its rendering of the climax of the conflict between Vallon and The Butcher is similarly counterintuitive, swallowed up as it is by the tide of history (specifically the Draft Day Riots ). Theirs is a forgotten conflict in effect, rendered deliberately insignificant and anticlimactic. It's a bold choice, since it can have an alienating effect on the viewer, who might feel cheated, but it's crucial in illustrating the manner in which the blood and violence of history is swallowed up by time. An idea repeated by the film's final image of the city transitioning from 1863 to 2002. The past buried beneath "the steel and glass canyons" of the present.

You never saw There Will Be Blood or The Unbearable Lightness of Being or My Left Foot or Last of The Mohicans or Lincoln or The Crucible ? Not necessarily in that order but Daniel Day Lewis is legendary! Three Best Actor Oscars well deserved.

There will be blood is one of the few films I will watch everytime it’s on no matter where it is in the movie. Came out the same year as no country for old men and was sandwiched between 2 years with no good movies so it really stands out.

The end where it goes from old to present day NY was so nostalgic the first time I saw this it really messed my head up always thinking about the days of way back

Gangs' was scheduled for a Nov/Dec. 2001 release date but, World Ttade Center was attacked that year. The movie was released following year and if I remember correctly, Harvey Weinstein suggested Scorsese to delete The Black Orphanage arson scene. (Emotions are still raw over the World Trade and movie takes place in New York. There was even a debate weather or not the twin towers be included in the final shot).
Boss Tweed made comments about dead votes at the end. He died in prison. Draft riots also occurred in Boston & Detroit.

There were some violent written scenes that did make the final cut. There was one involving a girl killed over a 1 cent penny.
This movie was based on Luc Sante's "Low Life". An excellent, researched book. All of the details were based on documented fact. Marty merged the main characters from multiple sources.
DDL films are all excellent. I'd start from "Last of the Mohicans"
seconding the recommendation of "low life" here, an incredible book that really brings the era to life.
It's based on 'The Gangs of New York' by Herbert Asbury (1927). I read it way before this movie was made..

You've already done one of my three favorite Daniel Day-Lewis vehicles. I hope you consider the other two: The Last of The Mohicans & There Will Be Blood. I'm glad Samantha is getting a list together. Daniel Day-Lewis is a legend who gives a powerhouse performance in pretty much everything he's done. Other favorites that didn't make my top 3 are also worth a watch: In The Name Of The Father, & Lincoln. A shame he's retired.
Daniel Day Lewis is the best. I would highly recommend him as Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood. Slam dunk oscar win for best actor in that role.
First of all Great Reaction, this is one of my top ten movies and I don't see enough reactions for it. My favorite Irony in this film is Daniel Day Lewis throwing a knife at Abe Lincoln's picture and then 10 years later Daniel ends up playing Lincoln in 2012 and winning Best Actor of the Year for that great role. I highly recommend Lincoln.
Daniel day Lewis as a Method actor stayed in Character on and off the set for months . There are behind the scene accounts of Bill the Butcher stealing props from the set. 😆 Lewis stayed in Character so much. Cast mates feared for his sanity. Even Daniel has stated in interviews. It took him a few months after shooting. To come back to his true self.
Kind of an extreme method, but it shows. He carries that movie.

Bill The Butcher has to be hands down one of my all time favourite movie villains, he is INTENSE.
