Investigating El Salvador's gang crackdown and forced disappearances | Fault Lines Documentary

  • In El Salvador, Gabriel Urrutia searches for his wife and stepdaughter, who were jailed in the country’s repressive crackdown on gangs that has resulted in nearly 70,000 arrests since March 2022.
The government suspended the constitutional right to legal defence and made it possible to imprison people indefinitely before trial. Like Gabriel’s family members, many others have disappeared into the country's dangerous and overcrowded prisons. Human rights groups have documented many in-custody deaths since the start of the state of emergency.
Despite El Salvador’s new repressive reality, the policy is extremely popular and has helped President Nayib Bukele consolidate his hold on power.
Fault Lines travels to El Salvador to report on the war on gangs and investigate claims of abuse and deaths in prison.

@@ssjrose9641tbf the number of innocent getting jailed are really small percentage compared to gang member. Also one could argue that the number of innocent death due to false accusation is 50 time smaller than when the gangs were ruling the streets. Ideally the cops and judicial system should be perfected to stop those but right now I would say it’s the best choice for El Salvador in the short term.

I am from Honduras, for someone who has experience first hand, what gang members and associates can do, did and are still doing in my country, I find it repulsive to hear anyone pleading for those people. They have have never experience the terror, of receiving an unanimous note asking you for an amount of money that you don’t have…and if you don’t comply by the end of the week, you better move from your house…That was the reality for millions in El Salvador, the reality that people in Honduras is still living. It’s easy to speak when you know there will be no consequences.

      🙏,
These channels can’t even go film in infested gang countries.. they went to El Salvador and were able to film with peace because of the work the government is doing, and still not enough. In the past these media folks couldn’t film without police patrol.
There is clearly an agenda to discredit what the government is doing. Thank God the majority of people do not believe what the media says, we have focus on the job done in El Salvador, we can compare the past and the present and in God we hope for a better future. Gracias por el apoyo mi hermano hondureño que las cosas también se mejoren en honduras y latino america, donde lo que se impone es el poder de las grandes naciones dejando los pueblos en la sos obra.

I am an American and I visited Dulce Nombre, outside of San Pedro Sula in Honduras. I visited back in 2018. When I was there (the first time out of my country), what us American’s see in the “movies” or hear about it 150% true. The first day there we were stopped by the police and they forced us to “pay up” and also ransacked our luggage. The third day we were there our storage unit was broken into and all of our tools, and ladders were stolen. The very next day the police stopped me, and threatened to arrest me because of the tattoos on my hands stating I was in a gang. And the absolute scariest thing, was the last day we were there I witnessed a cold blooded murder 5 feet in front of me. And the scariest part of it all, was the fact all of the locals acted like nothing. Meanwhile I was experiencing the most terrifying moment of my life. What you say is beyond true. People have NO clue the terror that happens outside of the United States. God Bless you and your loved ones. And if any are still in Honduras, I pray for their safety, and protection from the Lord.

The million-dollar question, where were those journalists when the gangs raped, extorted, kidnapped, killed, etc., etc. How many specials did they do to document the pain of the Salvadoran people at the hands of gang members. When were they concerned about the human rights of the population, of those who suffered the horror of the gangs for years and years. Now that a man had the courage to face and solve the problem, now they appear. What or who is behind these journalists?

I don't think it's that. It's more that they are worried about innocent people who get caught up. Considering the lack of a justice system and how intense this crackdown is you better not be walking on those "safe streets" at the wrong time or be wearing something similar to a gang member reported doing something earlier. If you fit the description and are innocent it seems like you won't get much of a chance to prove your innocence. It's fine when you aren't the one wrongly accused. Yes, even if you have served your due sentence years ago and you are now a good person, YOU WILL STILL BE CAPTURED AND SERVE 25 EXTRA YEARS. Government will NEVER tell you if your relative is alive or not....or what prision that person is.... It's unfortunate that very little inmates may be innocent, or at least had some ties to the gangs. I hope justice does prevail in these cases. However, the over all crime rate and safety has improved dramatically since Bukele took office. I've had family members murdered by these psychopaths. Now, we as Salvadoran people have to move beyond dealing with part of the problem and the government should also focus on corruption from within with job, educational opportunities, eradicating poverty to help the younger generations avoid a life of crime. These "human rights groups" make me sick! Where were they when tens of thousands of innocent Salvadorans were being brutally tortured and killed each year since the early 90s? Why do they conveniently dicide to protect the criminals instead of the population it has strongly affected? Such hypocrisy.

@@ninofromkitchennightmares1497 There's been more than 7,000 Men in this prison that have been released who were innocent not by human rights watch groups but by the government of Nayeb Bukele. They are under servaillance by the government to make sure they are telling the truth and don't re organize or act suspicious. I know this because I was born in this country and have visited time and time again. I also have family members whovtell me what's going on. Unfortunately I've had family members murdered by these psychopaths and so have many hundreds of thousands of Salvadoran innocent civilians. I think you need to travel there to know the truth as to why this government has taken extreme measures on the gang terrorism problem that has plagued this country for decades after the civil war. Where were those human rights groups that you speak of when these criminals were murdering thousands of innocent people year round? El Salvador was considered the most dangerous country in the world not too long ago, more dangerous than the Middle East in war times! I think these so called Human rights watch groups are more concerned about reporting the horrible parts of death and mysery of countries like El Salvador instead of really doing something positive about the problem. I guess they'll be out of work or not make income if there's no violent country to report on. Now I believe that locking up these terrorists are not the long term solution to this problem. There needs to be job, healthcare, educational development opportunities for the average person so to have the younger generations of Salvadorans not be tempted to join a life of crime. Poverty and crime do go hand to hand unfortunately.

Decades of terrorism and brutality from these psychopaths have taken their toll on the public. Not only has my birth country lived through a civil war that the US has funded through the Reagan administration, but we were left more poor and desolate. Then a new problem that El Salvador never had before surfaces....the gang terrorism that was brought back from the states especially by LA youths who had joined gangs or created their own (ms13) and were deported back to El Salvador and other Central American countries. They obviously brought this gang culture to their countries of origin and it spread like a cancer. You obviously haven't lived there and don't know the truth like these so called human rights watch groups. Why don't you take a trip over there and talk to the majority of Salvadorans about how much safety and security they feel about what's transpired? Yes, some of these people were freed amongst the 99.9 percent of the terrorists who are locked up. The latest estimates are 7,000 men who've been freed from these prisons after being proven innocent by the Police and judges of the government of Nayeb Bukele, not so called human rights watch groups. If you go over to El Salvador like I have and talk to the people, the majority of the population 95 % support Bukele. What i noticed on the video is that there are representatives opposing parties. Same parties that would not do to anything when gangs comited 30-50 homisides a day, and would even lend out military shooting ranges to gangs, steal millions while the common populations starved. same political parties that would go in to schools durind the civil war in the 80s get 12 year olds give them rifles and have them kill each other. dads killing sons, brothers killing brothers.
Trust us friends from other countries we need to do this. I know in other nations this looks bad. However, this is a democracy and this is what 92%of us want.
