Hey guys! This will be the last normal episode of this playthrough. Since Mirkwood has been conquered and now it is just a matter of conquering villages outside of it. I thoroughly enjoyed this playthrough and hope you enjoyed it as well. I will be doing a final live stream on Friday the 6th at 2pm EST. Reinforcements: As soon as you cancelled that cavalry attack, I knew the garrison was effed. The battlefield is the square the DEFENDING army occupies (or the besieged one, in the sally out, as it happens on the settlement map). Reinforcements come from the squares AROUND the Battlefield Square. Your cavalry was two squares away from the settlement. When you initiated the attack on the orcs, you got the garrison as reinforcements, as both of your armies were next to the ORC square. However, when you cancelled and allowed the orcs to initiate the assault, the battlefield shifted to the city, with the predictable effects. Rule: Reinforcements need to be next to the besieged city to reinforce it.
Building priority: 1.) Culture (and garrisons) If it is settlement captured from the orcs, get the culture buildings up (artist's studio), or the garrison building if it is expected to stay at the front lines. You need a certain minimum culture to get units, and it is actually hurting you to build a barracks before you have the culture requirement, since the manpower pool counter starts from zero. Whereas if you already have a high enough culture, you will get 1 unit in the pool as soon as the building is built. I think this will bite you at Dor Lhingvar. 2.) Get better barracks and archery ranges in your core regions (i.e. Lorien, Amon Lanc, up in the north like Thranduil's Halls). Your low-tier units from early game are struggling. They are still OK, since Dol Guldur units are trash, but they are not nearly as good as your middle-tier units (such as Marchwardens), let alone your elites (Galadhrim units). Lorien also gets Ents and Elven Shotguns (I forget the unit name), a unit that throws several javelins all at once. They only get a few shots, but the ones they get are devastating.
3500 Third Age, Lorien Historian, ‘On the Clensing of Mirkwood’: “It is said that when Lord Celeborn reached the center of Dor Lhingvar, he wept. He wept for the third of his army that fell in the taking of the village and the thousands more who never reached the edge of the forest. He wept for Haldir who with his men never made it out of the dark wood. Wiping the orc blood from his blade, Celeborn looked around and for the first time in an age, saw the sunlight pierce the cloud which had hung over the forest as if the hand of Morgoth itself was retracted. The goblin forces scattered, Celeborn grinned as he watched them flee like rats before the hounds from the glade. Each of these things flew through his mind, but the most important was, “Ityaina ná” it is finished. While the war was not yet won, the tide had been turned. No more would the trees languish beneath the veil of darkness which had beset them. Addresing the remnant of his meager army who had bled so much for liberation of the elves, he began, “Lissë ná ninquë lindenya” - Sweet is my shipwreck. It is sweet to know that our lands are now free from the villainy and hatred of Sauron. But here we stand upon the field where too many of our brethren now lie, never to rise again. We must honor them as they have honored us for it is by their sacrifice that we are able to stand here this day”. It is said that Celeborn wept openly on the field of victory, but that is not the end of the story, for Celeborn also smiled.”
Garrisons and governors: You should go through your garrisons and see if you can send some more people south, where the fight is. In particular, Duinberg, Rhosgobel, and Enethaur should be covered by other forces already, and can bolster Ost-in-Geil and Amon Lanc. Ost-in-Geil will be secure once you finish kicking the small orc stacks out, allowing its garrison to reinforce Celeborn. Eryn Rhuinen garrison can also move south, since Dale is taking care of Burh Alge, and reinforce Thranduil and Legolas. You will need more governors in those formerly orc settlements. You have three generals in Achnod Iaur, one of whom is a special general, who would be better used in leading an attack force. You can easily replace him with free upkeep infantry and archer units, especially now that it is bigger and can build barracks and archery ranges. In any case, you can easily kick at least one general loose to move to govern Dor Lhingvar (the city Celeborn is governing now).
I think you could have potentially claw a victory out of that city fight, but you would have had to play it real smart. You had better range with your general and plenty of arrows. You should have used that range advantage and plentiful arrows to try and whittle down the orc numbers, and if possible, lure them out of the square, thus stopping the countdown and hopefully luring them within the range of your gate towers. Even better, rush up to the walls if they chase you, because 1-on-1, your elves could have taken them. It is because each of your elves got surrounded while already tired that they died so quick.
