Elf Tactics: Not that it matters so much anymore, but with the Elves (especially Woodland Elves), skirmishing is the key. You are faster than Orcs (save for the wargs of course). Kill the wargs, keep your distance until your quivers are empty, and then try to concentrate on a single enemy unit at the time, rather than fighing 1:1 on a wide front. I.e. put a strong (general) or a defensive unit (spearmen) to 'refuse a flank' (like even perpendicular to the main battle line), while you outflank the enemy on the other flank, overwhelming that unit with extreme prejudice and then rolling up the rest of the line. Also, Legolas' unit has body-piercing arrows. Do not waste him in shooting orc archers in wide formation, but put him in front and shred those tight orc infantry formations. It is like watching a machine gun when he gets to shoot directly forward. Also, he should not go into melee until all of his arrows are gone, he is just that good of an archer unit. Also, the enemy general is always on the extreme left of the general unit. So you want to put your cavalry on your right flank, flank around and charge directly at the general himself from his left, to maximize the chance of killing him in the first charge.
Yeah, I was kind of making it irritated that he wasn’t using up all of the eleven arrows getting more of his man killed that could be saved but still, he hasn’t lost a battle yet
That was an intense episode! You grasped victory from the jaws of defeat many times and you thrilled us with those battles, keep going man! This is an awesome series!
The free upkeep is only for units that can be recruited in the given city. So it needs both the appropriate recruitment building and enough culture for the particular unit. The forts outside the cities give free upkeep to any unit.
@@RoulicisThe obviously, but it helps A LOT with economy, let's say he used the forts (2) near caras galadhon, so 8 free unit upkeeps, elves can easily have 400 gold/turn as upkeep (more) so it's at least 3200 gold saved per turn, with just 2 forts. without even talking about city free upkeep he'd have lots of gold or much better army by now just doing that

You can destroy Warg Breeder and Brawler Hall buildings in couple places. Basically all buildings that have no text to it that says what benefits it brings to you Also, Legola's unit is extremely damaging due to the special ranged attack , if i remember it is body piercing, so for the blobs of enemies it works best but low ammo and pretty fragile in melee makes them somewhat balanced. Careful with charging them into clashes Cheers from Serbia!
DO NOT DESTROY THE FREAKING BUILDINGS for the love of god, culture doesn't work like this, you'll get the units later, you're just pushing the settlement's development back by dozens of turns
Good point. But he does need to destroy the slave quarters building types because these prevent free upkeep, I think, for the player's units if its not their vulture. Pls correct if wrong.
Thranduil & Legolas' woodland realm army was unnecessarily obliterated in that last battle. You had to set up farther back and place all your units in loose formation and only a few lines deep to minimize casualties to ballista fire. As soon as the wargs are in range, target them with everything, followed by their infantry. You also need to use up as much ammo as possible before committing to melee.
@@alabaster6117 bruh ... did you play the mod ? it gives you literally the same bonuses, but you don't get free upkeep right away cause you need enough culture (depends on unit) to recruit the unit ... which is also why generals have instant free upkeep. you can also build the next tier as if it was your faction's (for example a tier 1 orc barrack will turn into a tier 2 elven barrack). there is literally 0 downside to keeping existing buildings, except guilds or ballista makers if you're not gonna recruit them (or lastly specific faction buildings like troll cages) and still it's not a downside, just free money you didn't take
@maximusd26 Aside from the barracks, which I thought was unusable as a next tier, you're arguing things I'm not arguing. Music Halls in early game is the best route to go for culture/upkeep. This whole destroy/not destroy isn't part of a financial dilema if you've got upkeep slots behind you and you don't need to wait for conversions. The only incentive is immediately financial, but in his case, it won't make a dent. If destroying an orc building brings me to a 2 turn music hall, I'll do it. Even building forts before you get cash strapped is a much shorter way of saving money.
@@alabaster6117 it's not, those halls take a long time to build for little benefit, the better order is to build every carpenter tier building, then economic or military and LAST the town hall (namely to access later barracks). also no offense but you're simply wrong, because building that 2 turn music hall will not give you free upkeep for a while until you get enough culture and are able to recruit that unit, meaning it was basically useless (especially if we're speaking about normal buildings and not the "temple" class building which will be destroyed anyway while taking the settlement)
Early winter 3000 Third Age Letter Home of a Lorien Scout: “When will it end? I was among those who defended Fenholm until only a fraction of us stood. For months I buried my blade in the hearts of goblin scum as I buried my heart along with my fallen brothers. I killed trolls goblins and orcs until I could not lift my arms. We fought until relieved only to find that our capital was under threat by a horde of orcs from the heart of Mordor. Again more of us fell never again to rise and see the leaves of Lorien glisten in the morning sun. Despite the replacements and short leave I was in high spirits when again we marched, for I was to be under the command of HIgh Marchwarden Haldir who has fought many battles and never seen defeat. He was first atop the walls when Amon Lanc was liberated and raised our banner. But now I’m not so sure. We left Duinburg in the spring to meet up with our silvan comrades at Leodholt only to find that they did not come. I was concerned because in the way of infantry we had little, having relied on our cousins to supply the bulk of them but having faith in our leaders I pressed on without complaint. After our first engagement we pressed onwards following Haldir having won a decisive victory, but then disaster struck as a goblin relief force ended the siege. We were outnumbered and weakened but weeks on the road more than 1 elf in 3 fell that dark day including half of my platoon. Our archers were thrust into combat, lives thrown away so recklessly. My horse went lame and succumbed from a warg bite. My blood has watered the tree of liberty and my heart bleeds for my fallen friends. Where is our support? We haven’t received any wages in months and I have send and brought word back to Haldir that another force even stronger than the last is breathing down our necks. My only hope is that we are able to liberate Leodhold before this new army reaches our camp. This may very well be my last letter home. I miss wandering the Wood. I know that we must fight for our lives against this reckless hate but surely aggression without proper supplies is not the way. Where are the Valar? Where is Eru? My faith in Haldir’s leadership has diminished. He seeks only for his own glory and cares not for the lives of his men whose only reward has been an unmarked grave. Instead of retreating and waiting for more support we sit outside this walls on the frozen ground waiting for the order to charge which may be our only salvation. We are tired of the fighting. I know not what will happen” edit: written before the battle at 48.00
Dude, this gave me chills. Very, very well written. I will buy the book you write about this campaign if you're as invested in that as you were this "letter"
One big tip I can give from my playthrough is be strategic with which settlements you take. There are enemies on every single flank of Lothlorien. However, if you keep at least one Dol Guldur settlement between you and a potential enemy (misty mountain orcs, snow orcs, angmar, Rhun, Mordor, etc), it is unlikely they will attack. Also, watch very carefully for the notification that Minas Tirith has fallen. Once that happens, you only have a few turns before Mordor is knocking at your southern border. Try to only border them in one settlement so that their attacks are more predictable. I know it doesn’t help your current playthrough situation now, but I had to use this strategy on my second run because I started having too many enemies my first try. This run, I’ve cut right through the center of Dol Guldur’s empire and turned their empire into more of a horseshoe shape. They are such a pain to deal with because every time I take one of their settlements, they seem to take a settlement from someone else. So, I’m not really reducing their overall empire size. They basically wiped out the Vale of Dorwinion. They have taken their capital and everything. I am really trying to be aggressive and take Dol Guldur out quickly because Mordor has already taken most of Rohan and is attacking my southern border. Really tough campaign. But, by taking Dol Guldur’s early game settlements, I am stopping them from fielding good units. So I’ve been winning battles with like 300 elves against full banner armies. Only way to make progress
At Leodholt you did wipe out both armies, but since you lifted the siege the settlement wasn't captured. I think Dol Goldur recruited those units over the endturn, either that or they moved some units in since the settlement wasn't under siege
Very good. Back in black, several Dol Guldur stacks defeated. Time to reinforce, retrain, and continue rolling through Mirkwood, pushing the enemy back one settlement at a time. Beorn's Halls should be relatively safe, so you can leave that one general from Thranduil's stack to keep it under control while the rest go and join Haldir for the big push. Achnod Iaun has been relatively quiet, and to be frank, you can afford losing it if need be, whereas you must keep Amon Lanc. You could move your special general to Amon Lanc to help.
As for the buildings, if it says it gives you something (like the slave pit), then it gives you that. It doesn't matter that they are orcish, the warg camp is equivalent to your stables and functions as such as long as you have the correct culture (alas, the manpower pool starts from 0, which is why you find it so hard to recruit in your new settlements). Also, I forgot, all of those Woodland units? You can't recruit them so you will never get free upkeep for them in your cities. Use them to spearhead your invasion armies.
You didn't get the city since you were not besieging it. Always besiege, even if you think you will move away next turn. You didn't besiege it, the enemy got to finish their recruitment, boom, three healthy units to garrison the city.
There are buildings you generally can destroy - stables are worthless for factions that can't train cavalry for example. Edit: The reason the orc barracks isnt giving you free upkeep is that you either have too low culture to train that unit in that settlement, or that you dont have the buildings needed to train that unit there - or both. When you have both it will give you free upkeep.
Apollo, I have to tell you, I Enjoy this series sooo much. Love TW, never played this Mod even though I like LotR. Have to try it sometime. Anyway, thanks for it! 😊
