I'm a little bit torn about Splinter continuing to battle when they clearly had no cover from the arrows. He was always the voice of reason.
I was about to post about this. This seems to be a recurring theme in the last years. IDW's Splinter timeline also was a goddarn stubborn bastard that broke his family a few times. It took a confrontation with Mickey to get him to lighten up.
Seemed a bit forced to me. But then I think about the trauma of recently losing everyone and how many years of dealing with Shredder, his family, clan, etc. Everyone has a breaking point. It damn near feels like a suicide mission.. like Splinter wasn't even surprised that he got duped with the peace offering. Hell he brought his sword with him, like he was ready to battle one last time. I almost think he WANTED it to go left.
all reasoning was gone after hearing about the loss of his boys.... im more wondering why splinter and donnie had usagi yojimbos clan symbol on their clothes?????? a hint? or just an easter egg?
I am mediately thought this too! I thought this is more like Ralph letting his emotions control him then splinter who is normally trying to get Raph to calm down and focus.
@@juliaeaves8306 I had to backtrack to check and yes, you're right. No idea why they are using Usagi's logo instead of the usual Hamato clan logo.
Unless in this universe's link.. means Usagi was a Hamato in the "animal" verse.
As a Fan of the hardcore style of the original comics, it was awesome to see Master Splinter outdo every hardcore scene in the entire history of the series! And they were dishonorably lured into a trap; greatly outnumbered, surrounded and about to be executed, so it was definitely a justifiable No Mercy situation. Three heads with one swing of the sword...It doesn't get more hardcore ninja than that! Lol
This could easily be made into a magnificent TV series perhaps even better than the 03-07 series. Could be a continuation of 03-07 and just ignore Fast Forward & Back to the Sewers
@John Wright I recall I think the title was Days of Future Past. A really dark episode set 20 years in the future with no Don. Shredder had won with the Turtles no longer a team where both Casey & Splinter were killed

I chose to believe these are the 2003 version of the turtles that’s what turned me into a turtle freak and this comic was very hard to hear get told man but yeah days if futures past shows a concept of something like this so in a alternate universe I choose to believe this is the same version it jus fits so well

Great breakdown! This was a stellar issue from the action, to the emotions of Splinter and Donnie's deaths, all the way up to the revelation of Casey's powers. This issue had everything.

It's my imagination or the gore has been toned down in each subsequent episode?
Raph's death and fight was probably the most gruesome.
We did not see Splinter's, Don's, Casey's or Leo's remains. They were obscured.
On the good side. Splinter and Don's bodies were buried in the way they should... We still do not know what happened with if ever the Hamato clan remained after the rise of Hiroto.
Raph's, Leo's and Casey's bodies are probably still missing.
Yeah Raph definitely had the worst death when both Leo and Donnie had seemingly quick demises, specifically Leo. I could see the possibility of a whole turtle/cyborg situation for both Raph, Splinter and Donnie due to their bodies being the most intact while Leo’s was most likely incinerated in the explosion along with Casey’s.
@@PlatinumKnight-je3vy that would be something I had Imagined a few ago. Since I do not think they recovered Raphael body. Nothing worse than having to fight your zombified brother
@@TravelWithCesarin, he’s the most likely to fight Mikey. All of Leo’s, Splinter’s, Casey’s and Donnie’s bodies are cremated and incinerated so he’s pretty much the only candidate. His body might of been found by the Foot under the orders of Hiroto and has become a cyborg? On one of Tom Waltz’s posts he’d said that there was another villain other than Hiroto so could that mean either Karai or Raphael?
@@PlatinumKnight-je3vy Karai supposedly still in coma, and since Fugitoid pretty much avenged everyone by incinerating Stockman.. this only means 1) Bishop 2) other villain.
@@TravelWithCesarin, possible but I’m not all that sold. First off Bishop hasn’t made any appearance in the comic so it’s likely that he’s not the other one. Second Karai seems likely to awake from her coma in the final issue so she’ll most likely take up that role. It will be interesting to see how both her son and herself interact, it could be quite emotional? If she doesn’t wake up then they’ll most likely keep her for future stories because remember Mikey’s goal is to kill the last Oroku and we all know that Hiroto isn’t the last one, it’s Karai.

I had that small amount of faith too but the guy said they cremated don and splinter. Leo couldn’t have made it out the explosion. The only plausible turtle to survive was raph and he hadda kunai in his throat.
@@kweezy9224 yeah I know what you mean but I believe it was written that way as a misdirect for the reader! The way the turtles are mutating I have the feeling they have been kept alive by the foot, and the ghost Mikey is seeing is just the turtles in the astral plain!

I really REALLY like the turtle comics. I *LOVE* how absolutely _ruthless_ they can get. None of this NONSENSE about being afraid to "hurt" or "draw blood" from attacking enemies like in the animated series.
This story should be adapted to either a movie or mini series. Also, will the last issue be out for Christmas or New Year?
At the moment it’s looking like it will be out in either December or January, though it might come out sooner?

Rise is most likely done, Nickelodeon really needs the movie to do well if they’re convinced to do a third season. There is a new live-action movie coming out, it’s apparently going to have Michael Bay involved with it but it’s not a continuation of his turtles. The Seth Rogan animated movie is meant to be CGI at least that’s what I’ve heard.
Mikey better get a 1v1 with Hiroto
Hiroto is so lucky he never fought any of the turtles or Splinter they would've wrecked him. Shredder and Karai would be ashamed of him.
Hiroto like Saki have always been cowards who hide behind tons of disposable henchmen. He will probably never have a real 1 vs 1.

I *kinda* want to suspect the ronin dying in the final instalment, but I highly doubt it, considering the discussions of sequels that may be on the rise. I mean, Mikey can't teach Casey Marie if he's dead and they can't make a sequel without at least *one* of the turtles being alive to tell the story.
I do believe it'll be heart wrenching to see MIkey final reach his goal. All of the pending emotions returning to him in thst very last moment of the story.
I have two theories (1) Donnie already knows who was going to die in earlier episodes, which is why he removed his mask - to mourn what he must not stand back and prevent. He's been told it must come to pass if they're going to defeat Hiroto. I suspect Fugitoid has informed him, and this brings me to (2) The Hamato clan betrayed Splinter and Donnie, in exchange for their lives. Because there is no way the Hamato clan, would have survived Hiroto's ambush - had he not had a purpose for their continued existence. Which was to bait the last remaining turtle brother - Michelangelo. Otherwise, why would Hiroto turn down the opportunity to destroy Splinter's remaining legacy that bore Hamato's last name?
Had Mikey accepted the Hamato's offer to stay, I'm sure they would have betrayed him to Hiroto, also. But (2) is where I believe Hiroto has collected all the mutant bodies, and will get them to fight Mikey in the end - or what's left of them. I don't believe the ashes Mikey was given, were real. Because Hiroto knows, and most likely fears, if a Mutant was capable of taking his mother down - all alone, then the last Ronin will be more than capable to destroy him, what's left of his mother and his grandfather's legacy of The Foot. Hiroto understands, the only thing that can take down a mutant turtle, will be his brother's. Maybe they are the angels, he is referring to?
I suspect their remains have been altered and fused with technology, like Baxter Stockman before Fugitoid blew him up. The reason I suspect Fugitoid knows the future (and pre-warned Donnie) is that's what Baxter made him capable of doing. Accessing future events. Which is why he said in book #3, "if I can't have you, then no-one can." Meaning, Baxter knew if anyone else discovered Fugitoid's capabilities of (somehow) knowing the future, he would never be able to win. So he attempted to destroy Fugitoid, to prevent his never-ending defeat. Like a Terminator, always coming back to kill John Connor.
Notice the terminator reference, Casey Jones made, in the same book too? Fugitoid has a plan, and his family isn't dead. In Fugitoid's last words to Baxter, where he says he shall pay for what he's done, to his family, friends, etc - note the absence of the word, kill. For a robot to miss that precise detail - perhaps it's revenge for what Baxter has done, rather than succeeding at ending the lives of his family?

I’ve just read #4 and I’ve got to say, it’s definitely my favourite issue currently in The Last ronin series! I hope that #5 has an all out epic and dark atmosphere like the previous four with Mikey coming face to face with Hiroto in a modified version of the Shredder armour.
Your reviews are always on point! You even caught a few subtleties that I missed in this issue. This series is by far my favorite comic book run of all time.

Every time I get a new issue I go back and re-read all the old ones before finishing with the new one. I've read the first issue several times now. I feel like the first issue was the most emotionally impactful (especially the first readthrough) with Mikey being truly alone talking to his dead brothers and it set up a fantastic looking and emotional story. The second issue to me was a sad but prideful showcase of Raph's rage and his determination, his battle was brutal and I'd still like to know the BodyCount (lol) from that battle. The third issue REALLY grew on me the second time I read it, there's just so much happening in that issue that I find myself slowing down the reading and really taking in the pictures, it has GREAT classic references and I love the fight scene with Leo and Casey even as short as it was, sooo good. This new fourth issue I feel like is summed up very succinctly by, I think it was Tom Waltz's tweet that said "they don't call him MASTER Splinter for no reason". That battle was pretty amazing with Splinter and Donnie, but also the heart strings were definitely pulled when Mike took Casey Marie as a student and April started telling Mike how Splinter would be proud. The whole story is great so far and I can't wait to see how it ends. Also, I'm very happy to say that I was able to grab one of those Eastman covers paying homage to Frank Miller's Ronin with Splinter and Don on the cover before they sold out, the Hiroto cover is cool but the tribute to Frank Miller's Ronin cover by Eastman is just awesome! Can't wait for more!

Since Image TMNT got it’s own Reprint/Spiritual Sequel under the name of TMNT Urban Legends that’s given the Image Turtles continuity the proper close it deserved, maybe the 2000’s Mirage TMNT should get it’s own Spiritual Sequel with an official conclusion that it deserves too, and go under the name of TMNT Retribution or something like that.

...So I've had this THEORY since the beginning of The Last Ronin series..
[Potential SPOILERS ahead if I'm right!]
...With such a dark premise to the ending of the TMNT series, it was hard for me to immediately accept that most of the Turtles are really dead...and it got me to thinking...what would be the most epic, awesome ending for the last issue in the series...if The Turtles had secretly survived in hiding? And at the last second they jump in to save Mikey at the end? 😎
And it's not just wishful thinking either, especially how each "death" scene was vaguely presented and we never actually see them die. Each "death" scene seems to leave open certain possibilities of what really happened. I actually predicted this it how it would be presented since the "death" scene of Raphael, that Leo and Donnie would also get similar vague "death" scenes in the next 2 issues and that's exactly what happened. And as the series progressed with new revelations, it seemed to keep dropping clues as to how The Turtles could have actually survived!
...Notice how we learn that Mikey's mutation made him even stronger with age! Even a fall from a skyscraper directly onto the pavement didn't kill him. He even tried to go die in a cave before and it didn't happen. Advanced Turtle mutation seems to make them near invincible!
The "Ghosts"of his Brothers? (Those blue spirit images instinctively remind us of Force Ghost Ben Kenobi) But what if those are not ghosts, but a spiritual connection to his Brothers reaching out to him while they are still alive?
At first I was thinking just The Turtles, but now we learn that April absorbed some of their mutation powers from just being around them for so many years! And even passed it on to her daughter. So that means Casey Jones would have also absorbed those powers too!
And I know this may seem a stretch, because the Hamato clan Master tells Mikey he could not save Donatello and Splinter, implying he seen them both die. But what if it was necessary that not even Mikey could know? In order to successfully pull off the ultimate "Ninja Vanish!" move of all time! To fake their deaths! And to only reappear at the exact moment when they are needed the most! #TurtlePower4Life! 😎
That’s a good theory, though a little anti-climatic. The whole point of the series was that Mikey is the last of his family and kind if they just suddenly popped out at the last second then there will be a lot of questions asked like why haven’t they tried to find him, the same with Casey and April? It’s also the fact that the Hamato clan master had both Donnie’s and Splinter’s bodies cremated, also Leo’s and Casey’s were most likely incinerated in the explosion with Raph’s being the most intact but to be fair he’s the most likely to come back as either a cyborg or a clone. And one last thing, the “spirits” that Mikey has been talking to might just of been hallucinations most likely got to do with guilt and grief about his brother’s deaths and him being the final one left? Anyway all I’m saying is that it would take away a bit if they were all alive and would make their possible supposed deaths meaningless.

But as to a surprise reveal - ultimate survival story of our favorite Hardcore Ninja Turtle Clan being anti-climatic and meaningless? I'd have to disagree and say that would be the most awesome, epic, uplifting, climatic ending ever! Lol (with the crowd going WILD! screaming H@!! Yeah! Turtle Power Forever! Lol) But that's just how I see it and I can take it either way. We'll find out soon enough in the last issue =) I think the creators would also think us Turtle Fans would be left A LOT more happier and excited with our favorite Turtle Clan surprisingly still ALIVE and back together again, stronger than ever!.... than just simply, depressingly...and anti-climatically....forever "dead"? Lol =) #OhYeOfLittleFaith.... #TurtlePower4Life! Lol =)
@@KevinLPX, unless they do the whole Mikey sacrificing himself against Hiroto which takes them both out? If they do that then there could be an excuse to have the turtles reunite in the present, it could be the final third final page in the comic with them coming together again in the afterlife. If a sequel comic is announced then they can do the whole Mikey and Casey Marie student/master dynamic.

Perhaps they already have 😎 and are patiently watching from the shadows, preparing for the right moment, knowing Hiroto will drastically underestimate what he is truly up against, with overconfidence, thinking them defeatable and most of them already "dead". And with faith that Mikey will give it everything he's got thinking he is The Last Ronin! 😎
Let's not forget...the functions of a ninja include deception and surprise attacks!
@@KevinLPX, it could happen? One thing though is that in #3 when Raph is brought up by Splinter it’s in a way that seems that he hadn’t survived and that they’ve not got a plan to stay in hiding until the time is right to strike Hiroto. Also Mikey seems quite upset about his brother’s and farther’s passing that everything we’ve heard from him seems to be true about them being truly dead. At the end of the day this is just theories.

As much as I love Splinter and the turtles, this has by far as got to be one of the most dumbest moves Splinter has decided to do. Why on earth would he think it would be a good idea to go to enemy territory in hopes of a peace negotiation after Karai (Hiroto's mother) broke the last one that nearly ended up killing Splinter in issue 2? Hell even Leo in that issue mentioned he was surprised that the truce lasted as long as it did, which ultimately lead Raph to go on a rampage which resulted in his death. On top of that, I get it was an emotional moment, and he wasn't sure whether to know the fate of his sons, but it was so foolish for Splinter to advance forward, when he didn't have the numbers game. If he dies, then it's over, he can never avenge his sons.
Also is it just me or would this have fitted better if Leo had gone instead of Donnie. Leo is the most disciplined of the 4 and I honestly think he would've faired better than Donnie and a death like this would've been more fitting for a warrior of Leo, while Donnie could take on Stockman. But Donnie to a bunch of arrows, kinda feels anticlimatic, especially after seeing what Raph and Mikey went through in issue 1 and 2. Then again Donnie probably was the weakest of the 4 in terms of fighting and it pains me to say that because he's my favorite turtle. He went down as a warrior but it kinda feels underwhelming in comparison to how Leo and Raph went out.

#2 “First to fall”
#3 “Fight or flight”
These are just my current positions for each issues that I’ve enjoyed the most to the least, #5 “The Last ronin” will definitely be a great comic and conclusion to the mini-series. It will definitely either go above “Blood in snow” or below it.
Donny is my favorite I’m sad that he is dead.☹️
And also would you think he shouldn’t had died he is the smart one.
Got some mixed feelings on this one to be honest - I agree on some comments that this was a mixed battle. Donnie was level headed to think a retreat was in order but I can also see Splinter enraged at losing everything - at least in his mind. Raphael didn't just get that temper by himself, each Turtle has aspects to one extreme or another of their father and has fallen in part in regards to those traits. Showing which is why as a team - they are near unstoppable. Got some things in mind for the last issue but there is a lot of questions yet to clear up and I doubt 1 issue will do it. We'll see...
EDIT: The top questions I still have yet to be answered? And some suspicion things may not be totally what they are... please keep in mind these are just theories that may be wrong. But I wonder. There IS some evidence things are NOT what they seem.
1. In Issue #2 - BOTH the Foot and the Turtles say the treaty was broken. By whom? (On a personal note, Casey and Raph were always close. He should have been there and followed - in my opinion.
2. In Issue #3 - we see a HUGE Fugitoid head in one panel but but then its back to normal. Was it some experiment or Mikey just not seeing things right? First, Hiroto's "Angels" and their particular design in issue #3! Three metallic-hands reaching out like that? Anyone else have three fingers? Yeah, the Turtles do. (Personal note here too, I think Don should have stayed behind as he would have more tech to handle the technology and it would have been a better match and Leonardo I think would have been a much better choice to go with Splinter.)
3. The Turtle Ghosts - ever since issue one. Why only them and not Splinter or others? I think there's a deeper meaning to it. Possibly the blast that hit Michelangelo giving him a serious concussion? Or reaching his highest level in training like the 1990 movie where they talk to Splinter. Could they be alive but in some other form?
4. I know the Hamato clan said they cremated Splinter and Donatello. But why were THEY spared? I realize this is personal with the Turtles and Splinter but the parlay was for all on both sides. I just get a feeling it may not be what happened. Also, the Clan insignia. I just realized its the same as Usagi Yojimbo. Who is himself a RONIN and has interacted with the Turtles before, including the Mirage line, where most of this is getting its story from, as well as the 2003 and 2012 series if I recall right. I also found this very interesting line on the Wikipedia site...
"Kakera - An anthropomorphic rat and mystic possessing the gift of foresight and the ability to summon beings from other realities, specifically the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was exclusively featured in the Usagi Yojimbo crossover comics "Shades of Green" #1-3 (featuring the Mirage-Turtles) and TMNT/Usagi Yojimbo (with the IDW-Turtles). His name (欠片; engl. "splinter") and appearance are a clear nod to Splinter, the adoptive father of the Turtles." Specific here? Summon beings from other realities? Hmmm... along with the no bodies we see and are just told about. I will concede if wrong but there are a LOT of coincidences when you really study the pages. (Personal thought here? IF Splinter really felt his family/friends except Donnie were gone... even wisdom has rage. He was probably trying to end it before it got any worse and Hiroto rise to even more power. So I've softened on that idea. Again, I think Leo would make a much better choice.)
5. The cyborgs - that still hasn't been explained as to how they got that way. Was it a forceful thing or otherwise? And how did Hiroto literally gain control over NYC - the biggest city in America - with no military intervention? We have flying cars and such... what is the year?
6. Could the Turtles still somehow be alive? We still don't know the extent of their mutation. Remember, they have this high healing ability and could it be possible that the mutation put them in a type of coma to get healed? I don't know. But... There are no bodies. Just stories. Leo probably got pulled from the rubble with Casey... what would whoever did that do to a mutant turtle? If the water around New York is so polluted, how would that affect a mutation, say a Turtle in the water - Raphael. And Donnie has had his conscious mind downloaded into a machine for a while. I know that's a different line of comics BUT... could he have been turned into a cybernetic being? Waiting to strike? The Usagi Yojimbo part REALLY made me wonder. Is Kekera foreseeing a dystopian future where Mike is trapped? There is just not enough time in the short run to explain more so we have to guess. Maybe that's the point? But if these issues are not addressed... as much as I LOVE TMNT and the Last Ronin, there are some things I don't like as well.
Four issues so far. Six big Questions. Better make this last one a doozy - I miss TMNT. They were my childhood. Their deaths were too quick and not even really acknowledged except by Mikey. There is no mourning for Raphael or the others... although I understand in this issue, once they landed, they had little time to find out. Still... as for prequel, absolutely. Sequels? I just don't have a desire to see ONE Turtle teaching Casey's daughter. Its called TMNT (plural) as in four of them. I want to see my family of Turtles again. That's it for my re-study of each panel. Please feel free to sound off on this with your own thoughts.

I really enjoyed this issue. But it was bittersweet when compared with the current main IDW series and it’s decline since #100.
I disagree about the decline. Since its a calmdown before the storm kind of event, like all comics have.
Its a setup as things are rising already towards the new arc with the Rat King.

Don't get me wrong I love the story, BUT, it feels so rushed for a story this big and this good, especially the death of jones,splinter, and the turtles. Should of been more issues going more I'm depth, instead of leaving me feeling like it's rushed

This was the best issue so far. The story of Splinter and Donnie's demises was sad of course and even sadder was how it set Mikey on his path to becoming the Ronin. The ending, however, was great, watching Professor Honeycutt get plugged into Stockman's mainframe and blasts the bastard with enough electrical power to completely f#%king obliterate him! I have always praised Honeycutt for being a pacifist, so seeing as how this was really out of character for him I was surprised...but I also loved it. And now Honeycutt has control of the mainframe and is shutting down all of the Foot Clan electronics around the city which takes them down a few notches. Now they just have to pull Karai's plug and kill Hiroto. Yeah, I know, easier said than done, but they'll do it, just like always.

The death scenes have been terrible and the way they had splinter go out is the worst of them. All the wisdom he's passed down through the years to his sons and in his last act loses his cool and gets himself and Donnie killed. Absolute garbage.
I can't blame him he lost both of his sons and he had to put up with shredders family for way to long.

Sorry, but the way Donnie and Splinter died is stupid as fuck. Donnie died cause he tanked all the attacks aimed at splinter cause splinter just said - lets go berserk and die, i have no more family (but what about Donnie? A good, well written Splinter would have cared and thought straight, but here, he just sent Donnie to his doom for nothing.)
They made splinter look like a fool. Mikey warned them before they left for Japan that it was likely a trap as well.
I think Splinter just snapped. His Son was death, he was betrayed twice again. He just wanted to cut the snake at all costs.. and he failed.
@@TravelWithCesarin The whole thing feels rushed and poorly written and on top of that 5 issues isn't nearly enough to tell a story of this magnitude. Each death should have been a full issue not three pages.

@@user-yt5cg4cg4i I agree. I think the quality is taking a turn. The only issue to me that truly felt like what Last Ronin was # 2 where we seen how much one turtle can do before his final breath. Since Raphael's death everything after that just doesn't live up to the rest. Like you said, it feels rushed and Idk what to think of April's daughter having super powers because the turtles give off mutant power energy. That sounds like plot armor as in Casey won't be killed because her powers will save her when any other normal human would have died under those circumstances.
I wish this was just the last Ronin, just Mike fully aware that this might be his last fight and must set out to at the very least die with Honor for the love of his fallen family.
But now it's starting to feel like any other sidekick story combined with prequel and sequels just sounds like a money grab.
I was hoping for something truly dark that would make you appreciate TMNT in a whole new way like in issue #2

This was my least favorite out of the three so far. The way master splinter died seemed weird and out of character for him, more like something Raph would do not master splinter. and Casey Marie was cool at first but she’s slowly just turning into another forced female hero in 2021.
Agreed with every single thing you said. Splinter seemed like such a different character in this I was reading his part wondering if I'm missing something thats changed his character in recent stories.
I also thought it was a weird choice how very light they were on splinters actual clear death.
And finally... I haaaate any forced-awesome "just because " characters. It's so damn boring. I have no interest in the character after this issue
That was the point Splinter had lost everything up to that point.... you dont think Raph got his temper from his father? It was interesting to see him lose it after all these years and go in for revenge.
