Before you start buying, decide what it is you're going to collect. You're not going to be able to get everything so decide what it is you want to focus on and make rules for yourself. And here's the hard part: stick to those rules! If you want to collect for the Nintendo 64, do you really want the whole set? Do you need all 27 console variants/colors? Nothing wrong if you do, just set those parameters first.

I have a moderate amount of NES, Sega Genesis and Master System and SNES games and the retron 5. I also was a vinyl collector. Now that i have a child i need the space and finances are a lot more tight. I sold my entire vinyl collection but kept my videogames (since they would probably be harder to buy back) . I mostly only do emulation now. One thing I learned with my vinyl collection is that dont assume you will make money or even break even when you eventually want to sell your collection. I used to buy records thinking eh..i could always resell. Reselling in itself can be a real chore depending on the size of your collection. I'd say get yourself a OEM controller of your favorite systems, an adaptor for USB and just emulate.

Make sure you’re having fun! If collecting is becoming stressful, take a step back. Don’t overspend or give in to fomo, patience is key. And only keep what you really love. Imo there’s no sense in spending hard earned money on a bunch of shovelware or stuff you don’t enjoy, just to have sit on a shelf and collect dust 🤷🏻‍♂️
